Great AWD for winter, bad run-flats

2004 Toyota Sienna XLE Limited 7-Passenger AWD 4dr Minivan (3.3L 6cyl 5A)

Driving this van has been a joy because I understand it's not supposed to be agile; it's AWD for heavens sake, it's safe, big, roomy and luxurious. But watch out for run flats that rip apart and malfunction with strange bumps. The first one had a bump that couldn't be repaired, $300 to replace by dealer. The 2nd, became flat, then I drove 10 miles and it' ripped apart...I had to stop driving immediately and have it towed. Thank god for AAA. 3rd time, driving to NC and tire started sound bad, it was flat/dead/whatever, that's was it, I had it towed to nearest Firestone and told them to dump the run-flats and replace with regular good quality tires. Drove from PA to FL and back, with np.

Most Reliable Car Ever Owned

I have been driving the Sienna now for almost 7 years and people can't believe the car is that old. The exterior and interior looks incredible and the reliability has been outstanding. At 136,000 miles it still rides like a new car and has had virtually no mechanical problems. I had the spark plugs changed at 130,000 miles and the timing belt changed around 90,000, but other than those normal maintenance items I have had no repair bills with this car. This is the first Toyota I have owned and I am confident it will easily make 200,000 miles.

2004 Sienna XLE at 180,000

This minivan still rides like a cloud. Relatively minor repairs and maintenance: new timing belt at 120,000 and a warranty replacement of the rear gate lift pistons. I will never go back to a small car. At 180,000 miles it runs like new. Very very very happy. I expect to get at least 300,000 out of this van, very comfortably.

First off, I am 18 year-old guy, and I have no shame driving this. It looks great for a minivan, and can take off when you put your foot down! My friend said "I thought this was a minivan" when I got on the highway. Yet it still gets over 20 mpg hauling 6 people every day to school. No other minivan has a factory woofer in the back. Drove on an 11 hour road trip, and it was perfectly comfortable and returned 27 mpg doing a steady 70 mph with a full load. Dream vehicle for a road trip! I highly recommend to anyone needing a versatile reliable family vehicle.

I want to change a van, but this one doesn't quit!

Currently has 325,000KM, just over 200K miles. Not a highway mileage; this vehicle is being used in courier business and constantly being driven in a manner of super-severe-service; mostly stop-and-go fully loaded. Over many years, enormous amount of stress have been applied. One can hardly be any more abusive than I am to this poor but robust minivan. Over the years of huge beat-up, no sign of giving in. You might be cautious purchasing 2004, first year production model among this particular generation. As far as mechanical reliability is concerned, you can count on this model and buy with confidence, given that all scheduled maintenance services have previously been performed. Many owners note that hinge of passenger-side power sliding door prematurely breaks. Did not happen to mine, opening and closing more than 20 times a day over the years. Power tailgate never failed either. Its 3.3 litre 3MZ FE engine provides adequate torque without having to rev up to move this 4300 lbs chunk of metal. Please make sure to know when the timing belt has been replaced because unlike its predecessor 3.0 litre 1MZ FE engine, this is an interference engine. When the belt snaps, likely the life of engine snaps. Professional engineers say this engine has a tendency of unstable idling when old, compared to other engines from Toyota. It is not happening on my engine yet. I want to replace spark plugs, but can't seems to be able to reach bank 1-3-5 without tearing apart whole intake manifold component. I thought I will do it when it reaches 300,000KM, but got lazy. Its five-speed AISIN transmission perhaps is the most reliable part of the vehicle. Never shown any sign of wear from the abuse. JBL sound system works just perfect, including the cassette deck. This van, however, is notorious for wearing front tires rapidly. Nothing we can do. After research, I installed Pirelli Four Season P4, one of few tires with tread life warranty of 160,000 KM and yet recommended by Tirerack.com Traction is not the best, but survived many Canadian winters with this set. One wheel bearing has been replaced when doing brake job. Also, half an year ago, starter finally quit, but considering the engine has been being started about 50 times a day every day, I am surprised it lasted this long. It will be nice to be able to re-calibrate the trip computer. It always shows 15% better mpg than actual distance indicated by odometer. One full tank of gas usually lasts an average of 700KM. Highway driving? No, plain stop and go. I can't shake off this habit of filling it to the brim, which allows 10-15 litres after initial click. This practice is not recommended because once the gasoline is leaked into the little hole on the very top, your EGR system can be ruined. I don't know why I am doing it. It provides a weird sense of satisfaction to go a long way from one tank. I haven't measured highway mpg since I don't really go there. Conservative cruising should be able to achieve 850KM at least. Nothing but Octane 87 has been used. Interior fit-and-finish is up to the level of Lexus product. This is a generation Toyota did not spare any money for refinement. Although mechanically more sophisticated, 2011 and up Siennas are heavily plagued by aggressive cost reduction. Much, much plastics throughout. Nothing beats 2004-2010 generation when it comes to interior workmanship. This vehicle ages really well. We also have 2007 LEXUS ES350, but I feel more comfortable and secure driving the van. Considering the size, it handles really well. Turning radius actually is smaller than Lexus. Sure, 2011 model handles more aggressive and even sporty, especially SE version inspired by Kazuo Mori, the chief engineer of that generation, but our 2004-2010 models provides better comfort and refinement. And it breaks down less. There are many alternatives available for similar price range. Perhaps the greatest competition will be Honda Odyssey. I love Honda, and have owned 95, 03, 08 Odysseys. They handle wonderful, but break down too costly. This Sienna doesn't.
