Not worth the Toyota premium price

I rented the 2020 Toyota RAV4 XLE for a day trip, since our own car (2016 Mazda CX-5 Touring) has been driven a lot lately and we want to keep the odometer down. Don’t get me wrong— there’s no doubt the new RAV4 is a nice car. However, it is so darned lack luster compared to our four year old Mazda! First of all, the ceiling height is dismal for such a large vehicle. I’m 6’2”, and I had to slouch just a bit to drive this car comfortably. In our CX-5, I can sit up and still have some room above my head. Secondly, the eco drive function on the car makes it a DOG. I consistently found myself switching to normal or sport when I needed to get up and go on the highway, and it still didn’t cut it compared to my CX-5 in normal driving mode... with 70K more miles than this car. Third, the driving dynamics of the RAV4 leave so much to want for! I can tell how much I have been spoiled with our CX-5 that hugs the road and nearly drives itself. While the RAV4 is slightly smoother over bumps, it comes at a high price for a floaty feeling around the curves that doesn’t give very much confidence. Finally, the interior of the RAV4 was disappointing. This car costs DOUBLE what my CX-5 is worth now. By far, the CX-5 interior wins. The doors of the RAV4 are light and flimsy, and, though there are soft materials inside, the overall feel of the RAV4 is cheap... reminiscent of a Hyundai. So, it begs the question: is this car worth the money, even with the good fuel economy? For me, I’ll take my used CX-5 with three mpg less ANY DAY. Before you buy this car, try a Mazda. I think your driving experience will make the decision for you.

2020 RAV4 - Good at everything, great at nothing

I bought my RAV4 June of 2020 after be beloved 2012 Ford Taurus was totalled in a car accident and now have just shy of 41K miles on it. I really don't understand the avid hate for this vehicle as I have only had one very minor issue an that was an exhaust rattle that was attributed to a broken clamp. It was fixed within an hour and life with it has been good since. I guess I got lucky as mine has never had the dead battery or jerky/harsh transmission shifting issue. I really like the styling of this generation of RAV4 after years of less-than-attractive, bizarre styling cues, this current generation looks really good. I get lots of compliments on the Blueprint paint colour. I didn't need a 3rd row of seats or an immense amount of cargo room, so the RAV4 made more sense than the larger Highlander. The interior has plenty of room for my 5'10" self. I have never felt cramped or claustrophobic sitting in the drivers seat. The seats have plenty of good adjustment and they are on the firm side. While this may seem discouraging to some, I find the seats support doesn't give away on longer trips like softer, more plush seats do. Passengers, both front and back, were pleased with the room as well. The view out of the glass area is impressive and gives a good view of everything ahead and to the side. The rear view out of the back window is very small and nearly impossible to see what's back there. Fortunately, the back-up camera aids well in the view of what's behind you. A majority of controls are located on the steering wheel and the two stalks mounted on either side of the steering wheel. This was quite a learning curve for me, as I am unfamiliar with Toyota (this is my first Toyota ever) but it didn't take long to figure out. The stereo/navigation, HVAC and AWD controls are easy to reach and understand. My "biggest" complaint about the interior is the gas fill door release which is tucked almost underneath the dash by the hood release. It also would have been a nice touch to have the door lock/window switches illuminated for night use, but it's not too big of a deal. Driving the RAV4 is, for the most part, a pleasant experience. The 2.5 engine provides decent acceleration for day-to-day use and has decent passing power. The 8-speed transmission shifts, a lot. Unlike what others have experienced, mine has been smooth as silk and the shifts are almost imperceptible. Like many have noted, the engine noise can get rather obnoxious around the 3-4K RPM mark. One thing I do want to note the engine settles down to a muted hum at cruising speeds. Tire and wind noise at highway speed is noticeable, but not overly annoying. I did change out the OEM Continental tires to Michelin Crossclimate2 for better winter traction. The ride, like the seats, is firm and rough roads will transmit bumps into the cabin. It's not overly bad, but noticeable. Handling is typical of an SUV, very easy to drive day-to-day but emergency avoidance manoeuvres are not confidence inspiring. The AWD system works very well and with proper tires, can easily handle all but the deepest of snow. My travels take me down country roads which sometimes don't get plowed by the time I have to be at work and the RAV4 had no problem going thru 6-8" of snow on the roadway. The HVAC system both cools and heats the car well, but the airflow seems to be on the low side. Fuel economy has been a pleasant surprise. Granted most of my travels are considered highway, but I consistently get low to mid 30s which is great, since the RAV4 has a ridiculously small gas tank of 14.5 gallons. One thing to note, the LED headlights on the Limited trim are super bright, but have a distinct cut off that will limit down the road visibility on low beam. High beams are spectacular with a bright long distance view that's very inspiring for night driving safety. The technology in this vehicle is either good or worthless. The radar cruise control has a learning curve to how it operates, but I have been pleased with it's ability to do what it's intended to do. Lane keep assist is abysmal, it you like constantly fighting with the car for steering control at highway speeds than you'll like it. I don't, so it gets turned off. For what it's worth, outside of the lane keep assist (LKA), I have never had any unpleasant surprises in terms of the safety features on this vehicle. They all seem to work as intended. The optional JBL system with navigation is easy to use with some time and patience to understand the dynamics of the system. I prefer to use Google or Waze for navigation as the Scout system can be fussy and inaccurate. The sound from the JBL system is very good, but the Sony system that was on my 2012 Taurus was light years better in sound. All in all, I have been very pleased with the RAV4. The RAV4 does everything very well, though nothing exceptional outside of fuel economy and reliability (for me anyways). It's a pleasant, practical, capable, day-to-day vehicle.
