A Fun Ride
I bought it because I loved the exterior and the amount of room inside. Performance is about par for this class. No slouch but no burner either. The interior is more hit or miss. The instrumentation can be hard to see in bright sunlight or if the lights are turned on during the day. Fabrics and plastics are pretty good and the seats are comfortable. At the end of the day, I still find myself admiring its looks.
A tall station wagon with style
When I first saw Matrix in 2002 New York Auto Show, it looked very very fresh. No other cars have matched Matrix's fresh styling!! The body kit, aerodynamics, alloy wheels and headlights look very cute and aggressive. However, there is slight disappointment in power. The automatic does not feel lively at all. I lost to my brother's auto 03 CR-V which only has 160 hp, and mine 180 hp. The torgue needs to be improved. Yet, auto gives comfort. Interior is kind of too dark also. Many, not all, like dark interiors. But, the Matrix is surely a big toy for big kids like me!! Handling is okay until I lowered the car by an inch more.

Best car I have driven
I love this car. My husband and I went out West last year. We drove our Matrix there and back. We drove over 4,000 miles. We got 32 miles to a gallon of gas. It was very comfortable and we enjoyed our trip in this car.
Don't buy a Toyota
So I own a 2003 Toyota matrix and got notification from ntsb that if the airbag goes off it could shoot shrapnel in my face.and there's a second recall because these airbags have been going off while you're driving....I called the dealer.i called Toyota of America and I'm just getting the run-around.no accountability.nobody is taking this seriously.what a Mickey Mouse company.do yourself a favor...BUY A HONDA

Manual trans is a piece of junk
My manual transmission fell apart at 5 mths past warranty in 2007 as have many others since. You'll find plenty of posts on this website under Matrix Transmission Problems. Do not under any circumstances buy a used 2003 or 2004 manual transmission Matrix or you will sadly pay the price at around 60-100,000 miles. The transmission has been proven to have a faulty bearing which of course Toyota will not admit and take responsibility for. I had Toyotas from 1990-2007 and will never own another one in the next 50y.
