Good Car With Terrible Infotainment

Scott, 10/06/2017
2018 Toyota Camry XLE 4dr Sedan (2.5L 4cyl 8A)

I like the handling and performance of the car. The car is roomy for a mid-size and quite comfortable. The safety features are also very good. Unfortunately, the infotainment system is awful. Toyota has decided to develop its own system called Entune 3.0 rather than offering Android Auto and Apple Carplay. Obviously, Toyota is not a technology company. If I had it to do over again, I would not purchase a new Toyota until Android Auto and Apple Carplay are supported. I also have a 2017 VW with Android Auto and the difference is like night and day. Entune appears to be several years behind. Android Auto is MUCH easier to use and wil support many more apps. Problems so far with Entune 3.0: 1) Entune 3.0 doesn't seem to auto-start. I have to manually start Entune on my phone before it will connect to the car. This has to be done every time I get in the car and quickly becomes very frustrating. Android Auto will start automatically either by recognizing when the phone connects to the car's bluetooth or when the phone is plugged in to the car's USB port. 2) Entune doesn't support nearly as many apps as Android Auto. Specifically, it doesn't support the following apps, all fully supported by Android Auto: Google Maps, Waze, Google Play Music, Amazon Music, Audible, Tunein Radio, as well as several messaging, audio book, and podcast apps. 3) Entune comes bundled with Scout for GPS navigation. Scout is not nearly as capable as either Google Maps or Waze. Initial routes take a long time then rerouting because of traffic or a missed turn frequenly fails. Also, the U.S. version of Scout doesn't support Canadian maps. I live in upstate NY and drive to Canada quite frequently. Both Waze and Google Maps seamlessly support driving in Canada. Toyota really needs to get its act together because Entune is just unacceptable. Maybe a good temporary solution would be to enable running Android Auto and Apple Carplay under Entune 3.0 until an update can be offered to current and future Toyota owners that supports Android Auto and Apple Carplay natively.

Get One While You Can! Amazing Car for the price!

2018 Toyota Camry SE 4dr Sedan (2.5L 4cyl 8A)

I have bought TWO 2018 Camry SE's. I had one for six months and then bought another one. Both of them have the convenience package that I would not do without. Without this package you have to start the car with a key the old fashion way and you don't get predictive lines on your back up camera. The package also includes a Homelink, auto-dimming rear-view mirror and blind spot monitoring side mirrors. Yes the Scout GPS is horrible beyond words. I tried it for one day and then uninstalled it from my phone. It is shocking that Toyota let such garbage get past their quality control. Of course Android Auto and Apple carplay both use Google Maps for GPS and it is by far the best and most up to date GPS in the world. It just works and Toyota is stupid for not getting it in their vehicles. ALSO, There is a SOLUTION for those who can't live without Android auto or Apple Carplay. For between $250 and $1250 you can get an aftermarket entertainment console to replace the stock one. Even the cheap ones have Android Auto and Apple Carplay and the more expensive ones can run both of them wireless. Some of them will also will play DVD's or Bluerays and most have better electronics that will immediately improve the stock sound system. These new systems can be installed to work with your steering wheel controls just like the stock system does. You can also have your system modified to mirror your phone screen for a few hundred dollars. Some may say, "Why not just buy a different car that has a good system already?" I would say because you will spend thousands more to get anything close to Toyota quality and in other cases get an inferior automobile. I consider Toyota to have few equals but in my opinion Honda is one of them. I was going to get a Honda Accord EX instead of another Camry SE, just so I could have Android Auto, but Toyota gave me over $7500 off the sticker of the Camry and it took a miracle and searching many Honda dealerships to get someone to discount one over $3000. After doing the math on both out the door prices I saved over $4500 by going with the Camry. You could take $1500 of that and go to your best local stereo installer and get a system that blows away all stock car systems. It seems Toyota knows something is up and they are giving huge incentives and enabling dealers to deeply discount these amazing cars because of the screwed up Entune system. Now is a fantastic time to go and get a 28 thousand dollar car for around 22000. You could probably get an LX for well under 20k. Besides the fail of the Entune system in different areas the car is fantastic and a modern marvel of technology. We have never driven anything that is more fun to drive. It has a sports car feel and sound. It's lane assistance, adaptive cruise control, pedestrian warnings, etc are all really cool and work great. Of course we have not a single mechanical issue which is what we expect from Toyota. The SE's SofTex seats are really nice and look and smell like leather but they are more stain resistant and much easier to clean than real leather. We love the Ash interior on the SE's that contrast light grey and black and just looks outstanding. The black interior just kind of blends everything together and hides the modern curves but is still way above average. We love these 2018 Camry's and do not regret our decision to by either one of them at all and we are a very Android / Apple loving family and we always use the GPS on our phones. We may go for an aftermarket solution soon but for now we just love driving these amazing cars.

You can not put a price tag on your life. The Camry 2018 is the only sedan in its class that comes STANDARD with a Pre-Collision warning system and drivers safety aids. The ride is Extremely Smooth, the interior and exterior styling are mind-blowing. Camry went from being Boring and Bland to Jaw Dropping sexy. As for MPG and performance, I thought the needle was stuck on F for the first 3 days that I owned it or 125 Miles. The MPG you get get with the performance is bar-None. The 8-Speed transmission helps keep your RPMs very Low while cruising and when you need to accelerate it exploits all 203 Horsepower in the motor! Its not Fast compared to a V6 but for a 4 Cylinder it is extremely impressive. Everything works perfectly. Could not ask for a better Sedan.

2018 Toyota Camry XSE 4dr Sedan (3.5L 6cyl 8A)

Purchased a XSE V6 (after considering Lexus ES, Audi S and BWM 4). The pictures do the car no justice-this is a beautiful looking vehicle in person. As such, I've gotten quite a few stares and inquiries as people try to figure out what kind of car it is, and there is a healthy dose of incredulity when I tell them its a Camry. And that's just the exterior. I have the Cockpit Red interior and it really sets the car off-it's WELL DONE. And it fits me well at 6'/280#, I'm as comfortable in this as I was in my 2008 Toyota Avalon XLS. I agree with the editorial review about the technology layout and functionality, and concur that the interior storage space is on the anemic side. The engine has just enough power to motivate you wherever you need to go when you need to get there without being petro-hungry. The 8-speed transmission will take some getting use to, and the handling and ride quality are great, what you would expect with 19" wheels with VR-rated rubber. The engine and exterior noise complaints aren't really an issue when the JBL Premium audio is on, so unless you are driving in silence, you won't notice it. Overall, I give the 2018 Toyota Camry XSE V6 a solid 4-star rating.

Nice car but

2018 Toyota Camry LE 4dr Sedan (2.5L 4cyl 8A)

Getting ready to replace my leased 2016 Camry SE Special Edition with 4cyl auto. I drove the Camry LE 4cyl with 8 speed auto. While the ride is comfortable and quiet, the shifting and drive ability of the 8 speed transmission is not to my liking. The acceleration is fine, but cruising on the highway seems dead with throttle response slow unless you mash it to the floor. I reset the MPG display to zero and the car did obtain 31mpg. However, on the same highway, at the same speed, my 2016 gets 42mpg. Also the throttle response is far superior on my 2016. Further, the Entune radio system is terrible. On my 2016, the Scout GPS could not be made to work and it is still the same on the 2018 I tested. My 2016 Camry is the very best car that I've ever had in over 50 years of driving. However, although the 2018 is a nice car overall, I won't be getting one. I like it, but I don't love it. UPDATE 5/18/18 I test drove an LE 4cyl and reviewed it here. I was somewhat critical of the 8 speed transmission and gas mileage. I was replacing my 2016 Camry SE and in the review said that I liked the 2016 better. However, after driving/pricing much of the competition, I just couldn't pull the trigger on any of them. So, I decided to take another look at the 2018 Camry. This time I drove the SE version with 4 cyl. I took it for a very long test drive on the interstate as well as in the town where I live. After that drive, I concluded that I was too hasty in my evaluation/review and that my objections about the transmission being sluggish, was more of my getting used to the 8 speed over my old 6 speed. In this test drive, I found that driving the 8 speed wasn't as objectionable as I previously thought. Yes, on the highway it did downshift frequently when going up an incline, but that's what transmissions are supposed to do to keep up the car's speed. I also found that in town it shifted out of 1 fairly quickly. To me, after driving for an extended time, it wasn't bothersome at all. I was also critical of the gas mileage in my original review and said that although it did meet the EPA estimates, my 2016 obtained higher mpg. Well, I was wrong and must have not cleared out the old mpg information as I thought I did. This time, I found that the car averaged as high as 49 mpg on LEVEL interstate @ 70mph. Of course that dropped when I started to encounter hilly sections of highway. So far, the indicator shows an average of 32.2 mpg overall with my city driving included. So, yes I decided to get the 2018 SE and so far have not been disappointed. I've noticed complaints about noisy engines, uncomfortable seats, poor interior materials, etc. In my case, I have not experienced those issues. So, what is my recommendation? Take a longer test drive under the conditions you normally experience.

They Crippled Entune 3.0 radio/infomation system.

They Crippled Entune 3.0 radio/infomation system in the name of safety. All 3 audio system models have been crippled in more than one way or another. Really love this car except for the entune 3.0 suite. It has been stripped of features. Will not display music grace-note album pics except in park - now feature is worthless. Toyota salesman said it was broken. Could not believe it was now blocked while moving. They specifically restricted pic from phone book except when stopped or in park. It has restricted receipts of emails and text while the car is moving. Now you must spend more time poking on the screen. If you had previous Camrys then you miss these features instantly. Bad move on Toyota's part. See lots of complaints on different boards. Have bought 12 Toyotas in the past 15 years. Now looking at Honda Accord. Toyota is trying to hide this info in its literature and responses to complaints with vague phrases like “some feature are restricted while vehicle is in motion”. The manuals is hard to read so it is hard to find where it states what will actually be “restricted.”

9000 miles now and just over a year of ownership. Entune and scout gpshas gotten much better and is usable now. Still not good but it's fine for occasional use. The car hasn't missed a beat. I have had zero problems with the car. First off I am not brand specific. I have owned 1 Mercury, 1 Honda, 1 Hyundai, 1 Chevy, 1 Kia, 2 Nissans, and 3 Mazda's. This is my first Toyota. The car has great safety features that come standard including: Automatic braking with forward collision warning, radar cruise control, and lane keep assist. But something's seem to have been forgotten probably to save money because these features come standard. Such as no push button start, poor interior dome lighting, and poor interior storage. The front map lights do not come on with the doors open. And no there is no setting that can be turned on. Just the very dim rear dome light is all you have inside at night when entering. The dome light is a regular incandescent bulb where as every other light is a LED. It looks out of place. Some models do have these things but my SE model does not. Also I am slightly disappointed that the car only has one 12v power outlet and one usb connector. Should have more for a family sedan. The connected Navigation thru Scout GPS is okay at best. Android auto would have been better. The shifting is very smooth but clearly geared toward economy. It tries to shift very early keeping rpms too low for the four cylinder engine. You have to give the throttle pedal a good push too keep the rpms up while accelerating. I would have liked to see the transmission programmed for more sport in the SE and XSE models. Really my gripes are very minor and I love the car. Now for the stuff I like. Exterior looks are personal but I love it. I never considered a Camry before this model. This looks dare I say sporty. It also driver very good. Handling and road holding are very good. Mine has the 2.5 four cylinder and acceleration as more than adequate. On our recent trip to Panama city which is 850 miles round trip the car averaged 42 mpg for the trip. Very impressive. Seats are fantastic and the car rides very well. The LED headlight are amazing. By far the best headlights I have ever had. My cars color is Galactic Aqua which is very dark metallic blue. I have received several compliments already on the color. I wont get into every aspect but overall this a very good car. I feel a few tweaks to some of the interior and this would be a great car. I am loving driving it and overall I love it.

How to ruin a great car

How to ruin a great car? Put the worst pos nav system in it and discriminate against people who don't have or want a smart phone. Seriously, not offering integrated nav as an option is the worst decision toyota has made. Everything else about the car is great but we like having nav that doesn't require two apps and then tells you to drive through a creek. Update 5/6/18: my opinion remains. Great car overall but I am still hugely disappointed about the Nav as well as toyota's "oh well" response. Many people have complained as well and I hope toyota would have had dealers offer to install the software. Guess not. Update 11/18: Nothing has changed. The car itself is good, though they really packed a lot of stuff into the instrument cluster which is difficult for older users to read and operate. I’m still very bitter about toyota stiffing us on Nav and this will honestly cause me to consider other brands when time comes to get a new vehicle. Update 11/7/20: again, nothing has changed. The car itself has been good. No mechanical issues. Mpg is good. Rides great. I am STILL annoyed to no end about the nav. Had to buy a stand alone nav for my father which is bulky and cumbersome.

Wonderful car ruined by a horrid entune system

Wonderful car with a very catchy design. This car, with the exception of uncomfortable seats, would be exceptional if it wasn’t for its horrid entune system. The entune app itself isn’t doesn’t work very well and constantly crashes. Pandora is very unresponsive and doesn’t work half the time. The scout navigation system is HORRIBLE. One of the stupidest designs I have ever seen. If Toyota addresses these issues and ditches the entune system then this car would be exceptional

Compared to the 2015-17 Camry's I found the seats of the 2018 noticably softer, better shaped, more comfortable. Engine pep of the 4 cyl around town felt about the same as the 2015-17’s and the 8 speed transmission of the 2018 is busier than the 6 speed in the 2015-17's, but the gaps between gears are so small that the driver barely notices the shifts, hence they are not particularly irritating. Road and tire noise at low - moderate speeds is similar to the 2015-17 models, but above 50 MPH the 2018 seems quieter plus there’s less body vibration in the 2018 which makes for a more peaceful and serene, lower fatigue highway driving experience. Steering feel and directional stability on the highway were good on the 2015-17 models, but are outstandingly good on the 2018, which is another factor that make the 2018’s more pleasant to drive. There were zero squeaks and rattles on the 2018 LE I drove - impressive for an all new design. Interior of the 2018 feels a little smaller, but space is still adequate. Entry and exit is a little harder on the 2018 due to the 1 inch lower roof and seat height. Overall I really liked the 2018 as it manages to simultaneously feel sportier and more nimble yet with improved ride and seat comfort and the highway ride in particular is noticably calmer, quieter and more serene than the 2015-17 4 cylinder.

REBUILD THEENTUNE APP AND DIM THE HEADLIGHTS...!!!

Mark F...., 01/27/2018

Replaced a 2011 Camry LE with over 205,000 miles on it with another new 2018 Camry LE. The price and dealership (Toyota of Slidell, LA) were great. While it's a nice car and it may be just a case of getting used to (I've been driving it now for over 2 months), there are a number of things that I notice everyday that irk me. ONE OF MY BIGGEST GRIPES IS THE ENTUNE 3.0 system and application and its interface with my current Android device. It requires uninstalling and reloading the apps, un-pairing and re-pairing the device several times a month with all data having to be reentered. IT'S 2018 AND PHONES AND CARS SHOULD INTERFACE WITH ONE ANOTHER SEAMLESSLY...!!! Too many states have hands-free laws and I have to hold my phone in my hand to make a call most days. The Scout GPS system is absolutely terrible. I have friends who have a KIA and when they start their car, their in-car systems virtually duplicates their phone on their dashboard. And it works too...!!! When I first paired my phone to the car, I was able to touch the microphone button, speak to the car microphone and get Google to give my an answer through the car sound system. After getting a software update for the Entune 3.0 App (from update 1000 to 1001) as it kept dropping out, when I touch the microphone button now all I get is a high-pitched squelch feedback squeal. It has nothing to do with the volume of the radio - it does it at all volume levels, even 01. Toyota Care told me that the earlier builds of the 2018 Camry fully supported Android and Google but that they dropped their support of Android and Google in later builds (I don't know how much truth there is to that claim). REGARDLESS, THE ENTUNE 3.0 App and the vehicle interface with my Android device is TERRIBLE...!!! I CAN'T WAIT FOR SOME 12 YEAR OLD TO COME OUT WITH ENTUNE 4.0..!!! A couple of other downsides - the passenger side glove box is too small and the center console storage compartment is too large and deep without storage segregation/shelving requiring that I use large plastic cups to organize its contents. FINALLY - the only other downside that I'm noticing is that the HEADLIGHTS ARE WAY TOO BRIGHT. Virtually EVERY TIME I'M IN THE CAR at night on a two-lane road, someone flashes me indicating I have my brights on. I end up flashing my actual brights on to let them know that - no, those are my regular lights. When passing a car on the interstate, I've had them get in behind me and light me up with their brights as if to say "you had your brights on me while you were behind me so I'm doing it back to you." I have had the light alignment checked by the dealer and it is correct and within specs. The lights do provide great light for me while driving at night, but they're obviously a safety hazard to oncoming drivers and those in front of my car. The 2018 Camry is still a great value for me...!!! HOPEFULLY TOYOTA IS READING EDMUNDS.COM AND WILL TAKE THIS LOYAL OWNER'S COMMENTS INTO FUTURE CONSIDERATION.

I was taken in by the car's look, enjoyed the test drive and believed I paid a fair price. I never dreamed a company of Toyota's caliber would fall down flat on the technology side. The Entune 3.0 system was a major disappointment. (I should have required a phone to be setup on the system before purchasing it) I have only had the car a week and regret the purchase. This of course is an opinion; I would however suggest if the technology inside the car is important to you, have a phone paired to the car and see for yourself before you sign on the dotted line. Update: I’m hearing Toyota will transition to car play instead of beating the dead horse called “entune” in their 2019 models. Unfortunately there is no upgrade for the 2018. *** Update June 2019 Hearing that Toyota is offering an upgrade to Apple CarPlay for the 2018 models. The advertisement seemed to indicate there might be a charge from the Dealer. I called to get more information but no one seemed to know anything about it. I do not know if there will be a cost so changing my rating stands until then.

My understanding is that the transmission is new for this years Camry. I would estimate that about 80% of the time I feel like I am driving in the wrong gear. Example: the car feels like it is in second when it should be third, third when it should be in fourth, etc. To help witness this, the tach drops quite a bit after you take your foot off the gas. Shifts rough AND I have never had a car shift gears on me while on the Interstate. I brought the car in to the dealer to have it looked at with around 2500 miles on it and was told nothing is wrong. Not a fan! 4/2/18: Writing a second review: Well, I traded the car in with only 6000+ miles. I felt unsafe in the vehicle and with the transmission. I know I took a bath but my well being is more important. That is all I will say...

You can spend an hour trying to get phone set up properly between entune & scout. Then it still may not work. Things you save disappear mysteriously. Some days the system works and some days it will not. This is the most fickle, frustrating, and undependable system I have ever seen. Have to try and reset every time you get in the car. This is my 4th and last Toyota unless this gets fixed fast. Also not happy with cheapening some things like the standard lighting and the short weak range of the remote key. Nothing has changed. Will never recommend this car to anyone.

The car is stylish and great interior but navigation is terrible. I expected this car to be loaded with all features but navigation doesn't exist nor does it have GPS. All software and electronics is tied to the cell phone. Without a cell phone all this car has is a radio. If you managed to get the navigation working (cell phone has to be plugged into the UPS), if you get a phone call or make a call, navigation quits working as the cell phone can only do one thing at a time. Navigation app is terrible. For a car such as the XLE to just have a radio I paid way too much. I've have had 4 Toyota's now and would not buy this car for this price for just a radio. Would not purchase another.

The pluses? Tremendous headlights, good handling and mpg, plus it's quite comfortable. BUT little things Toyota missed, or didn't care about, drive me nuts on this car. You cannot roll down the back windows at over 25 mph or your ears will be pulsated to oblivion (well that's not a little thing). Plus the back windows wind down at warp speed so cracking a window for the dog is basically distracted driving. There's a release clip in the trunk that won't stay in place, the front bumper cover is held in place with FRAIL, cheap plastic clips, (as in UNBELIEVABLY cheap, my toaster's crumb tray is held on better) and replacement is $$$$$$$. One of my clips is cracked from scraping on a parking space marker at maybe one mph (seriously). and the dealership basically blew me off wouldn't even attempting to reattach it. Sent me to a body shop. The four cylinder engine is NOISY and shifts are rough at times, the tranny sounds like it has 200K miles on it. Except the headlights and the safety stuff, my 1999 Camry was a FAR better built car. Wow, I am Mr. Buyer's Remorse. I hate to take a beating but I am already looking to get out of this car at 7.500 miles. Sad. Don't even get me started on the COMPLETELY useless navigation system. I even called and sat in my driveway for 20 minutes while a tech reinstalled it, a complete waste of time. The entire Toyota Entune system is garbage, a complete shock from Toyota.

Great Everyday Car

We purchased this vehicle in September this year which just happened so randomly since we are only at the dealership for my wife's 2013 Corolla maintenance service, we saw the car and fell in love with it. Toyota did a very good job with this car compare to previous Camry models, very comfortable ride and the 4-cylinder actually very powerful for me, great handling on tight corners, cabin noise is minimal but it can be a little loud when speeding on the freeway. Toyota App is very annoying it will ask you to connect to your cellphone every single time you start the car, very poor Bluetooth connection and registration to every single music app is required don't not why it keeps on logging me off, can't use Pandora directly from the app, instead i'll use the app from my phone. Toyota's GPS app full function is required to be connected thru USB port which is very inconvenient for users and feels archaic. Center console material used is a dust magnet and looks very cheap, I have OCD and I have to wipe it off every single time to keep it from dust and smudges. As of this moment the car is in the dealership to check my moon roof that keeps on squeaking that can be very destructive when driving.

I fell in love with the body of the car, but the primary reason of purchase was the great financing Toyota offered me. It was a no brainer so I purchased the 2018 Camry XSE V6 back in Jan. I drove the car mainly in eco mode, but every now and then, when I felt like having a lil fun, Id put it in sport and barely give it a little gas and it had amazing torque. I recently took the car in for the 1st maintenance and everything changed after that! I can no longer drive the car in eco, unless Im in traffic and don't need to drive past 20 mph. Normal mode now feels like how the old eco drove and sport mode is a complete joke. It has ZERO torque now. I took the car back and talked to 3 different supervisors who looked at me like I was crazy saying all we did was do a tire rotation and top off your fluids. I had their lead tech drive my car who did not notice anything and "ran some tests". He came back and said nothing is showing up and there is nothing wrong with your car. I told the supervisor to have his tech drive a new car and then drive mine again. He did and still did not admit to any difference. When he stepped on gas in sport mode with the new car, I pointed out to him thats the torque that my car now lacks. In the end, he concluded it was the gasoline I was using...I use the same gas from the same station for years so this was highly unlikely to be the issue in my mind. So far, I have went through 2 more tanks of gas and still no improvements, that very clearly is not the issue here. I am furious that I had zero issues with acceleration before taking it to Toyota and am now left with a slow car that does not change gears properly. I hear the torque but don't feel it, I have even floored it and it did nothing! The other issue I have is seatbelt in the back, when the arm rest goes down in the back, it throws off the seatbelt sensors and everyone in the car has to unbuckle and re buckle to turn the alarm off. I am very dissapointed since this is the first car I have ever purchased and I will never buy a Toyota ever again!

Purchased 2018 Camry XSE 4cyl. with all options in Aug. 2017. We had a 2016 XSE 4cyl. The navigation system was simple and good but its upgraded stereo was terrible. Now in the 2018, the upgrade stereo is tremendous but the navigation, WIFi, remote start all are a technology nightmare. To think you pay $35k for a new car and you can’t use theses features. There has not been any resolution from Toyota. October 29, 2019, this is an update to our previous Camry review. Toyota has recalled our Camry and replaced their Scout system with Apple Play. What a fantastic difference! We are very appreciative of Toyota for addressing our issue and we are well pleased with the upgrade.

Disappointed Owner of third Toyota

David, 01/07/2018

47 of 53 people found this review helpful

We bought a $37k 2018 Camry XLE Hybrid ($43k after tax, license, title, etc.) 8/26/2017, and quickly came to discover that the new Linux-based infotainment system (Entune 3.0 App Suite Connect/Scout GPS Link) are quite possibly the most slipshod software developed *anywhere* in the automotive world. The Entune software is written by Xevo (https://www.xevo.com/) near Seattle, and Scout GPS Link by TeleNav headquartered in Santa Clara, CA. The customer reviews on the Apple App Store and Google Play generously rate them just over one out of five stars, the vast majority of the thousands of reviews deservingly giving both software titles just one star. The latest issue is with the navigation portion of the system when paired with an iPhone with iOS 11.2, the overhead moving map + 3D moving map during navigation w/ voice directions are rendered completely broken because of a connectivity issue. Local Toyota dealers/service centers/product specialists haven't been informed that the problem is known by Toyota and TeleNav/Xevo, and out of ignorance try to blame the automobile owner's phone, their USB cable, some setting they changed, a botched user attempt to upgrade the Entune software, etc. – Anything that isn't covered by Toyota's warranty, or that could be construed an issue with the automobile. After pressing, I was eventually informed that service training on the 2018 models (which are complete redesigns) isn't even available yet, so service technicians/product specialists appear completely clueless. All that being said, the Scout GPS Link connectivity, *prior* to the iOS 11.2 issue was flakey and finicky, at best. You won't find anything on Toyota's site, but here is the TeleNav admission: https://telenav.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/115005848023-USB-Connection-Problems-for-2018-Toyota-Camry-and-2018-Toyota-Sienna Other issues include HD radio stations that constantly drop in areas where other cars don't have problems, and forget using the Bluetooth audio for phone calls (at least with iOS) – the echo heard on the other end makes the call unbearable. This is another problem known to Toyota since before September, 2017, and still has no viable resolution as of January, 2018 (Toyota says to turn down the volume so that the mic doesn't pick up the remote voice, but as you guessed, when the volume is low enough that the mic doesn't pick up the remote caller, you can't hear them either). Toyota was previously known for the high quality standards of the products that they engineered and sold, however, if we could return this car, or sell it without absorbing the massive new-car depreciation, we would in a heartbeat. Any year/model Toyota/Lexus that relies on Entune/Scout GPS Link should be recalled, as far as I am concerned, and Apple CarPlay or Android Auto offered as a free replacement for loss of use and the inconvenience of dealing with their utterly maddening infotainment system.

We bought this 2018 Camry XLE late November 2018, and the Entune 3.0 apps suite has never worked properly. We are back to using our iPhone displays. The dealer has not been able to resolve this issue even after multiple long attempts. For this reason we can not recommend this car and really regret the purchase, no way out now, major frustration. This is a real problem for Toyota, they need to focus and resolve as other brands have.

I’ve driven Toyotas for years and have encountered very few problems. My dealer, Cain Toyota, in Canton, Ohio is reliable and the sales and service departments are great. I love my 2018 Camry XLE—EXCEPT for the Entune, the GPS and the hands-free phone. Toyota obviously kept “ improving” until they successfully screwed up the technology. No one can help me...I can’t use the hands-free phone because of horrible feedback. No matter how many times I log in, I keep “waiting” for Entune to connect. I am terribly frustrated.

Do your homework! I trusted Toyota (and Consumer Reports for that matter) but I am sorely disappointed. I am surprised stupid Entune 3.0 hasen't caused people to crash. I have an Android (S8) and have to shut down my phone at least once a week for Entune to work. I often get the message that Scout (the TERRIBLE tethered nav system - I repeat TETHERED nav system) cannot communicate with Entune, Entune apps are not functioning, etc. I would change the head unit in a hot second if I could but the way the dash is designed, there isn't a way to swap it out. My husband already got so frustrated with his 2018 RAV4's Entune system that we have spent an additional $1300 replacing the unit. (Yes, we did buy two Toyotas at the same time and yes, we are regretting doing so.) If it wasn't for the fact that I like the folks at the dealership I would consider staging a protest out front. It's not their fault that Toyota is not upgrading to a 21st century system BUT I'm starting to feel that there is a lack of "Truth in Advertising" when it comes to this system. If you rely on tech, go buy an Accord. Way less frustrating.

I purchased a 2028 Camry XSE with all options. Everything is very good except for the Scout navigation. Nothing is built into the car. To use it you must have the Scout app on your smartphone and the phone linked to your car. Once you get into the car you need to plug the phone into a USB port, and then start the app on Entune. If you go out of network, functionality goes away until back in network. When you leave the car, you need to remember to unplug and take your phone with you. If you get a heads up display, you will only see navigation on a V6 with integrated navigation. The app itself leaves much to be desired. In three years you will need to pay a subscription fee to use it.

After three and a half years of owning the car, when i go to the dealership they tell me to "get over it" there will be no navigation link to the display. Instead of solving the problems with the entertainment/navigation they just KILLED ENTUNE! I REGRET THAT I DID NOT BUY THE HONDA ACCORD. if i call Toyota and tell them there is a problem, they are more concerned if this is a warranty issue or a design problem. i don't know if not having usable navigation is a warranty issue or a design problem. as far as i am concerned, i just have a problem and need something usable for navigation. Scout is unusable. Toyota is in total denial about this problem. i originally contacted them with a problem five days after purchase. my service history shows that the problem has be "Solved" six times! They just mark the status as "solved" each time i log this as a problem and Toyota no longer has a problem, just their customer! AFTER THREE YEARS YOU THINK THAT THEY WOULD MAKE AN EFFORT TO SOLVE THESE PROBLEMS, THEY DON'T CARE. my experience mirrors others. Entune and it's associated Apps are problematic/useless. Some of the apps work inconsistently like internet radio or simply do not work at all. Scout is dysfunctional and dangerous, to use and it dominates the phone. when Scout is running you can't use other apps on the device. it runs in the foreground with a useless graphic? my wife can't make changes or use the phone while i am driving and vise versa. other issues which i can live with are: -loud engine growl at certain rpms -wind noise by forward edge of front window near rear view mirrors. -when you close doors they make a cheap sound, tinny. -too much dependence on Toyota's proprietary Entune operating system. as a car company, they may not be up to the challenge of developing and maintaining its own on board operating system and suite of apps. it was a mistake not to adopt a more open system and not to reinvent a usable wheel. -there is no mirroring app to allow you to use other phone navigation apps like google maps or Waze. -you can't easily determine what vendor and model of phone is completely compatible with the infotainment operating environment. - i can never predict if the system will start playing music or not, if it will connect to the phone automatically. Can't get NPR One to work. the strong review for the 2018 Honda Accord makes me regretful of my choice of the Camry. if you have a doubt about my review visit the reviews for scout gps link, most are one star. *****I have bent a piece of coated bailing wire to the passenger air vent and clipped my phone case to it. that is how you navigate in the Camry.*****

First off overall car is nice, awesome style and roomy cabin. Although accelerating is bad is feels like it skips a trans gear when Im turning with a yield sign it takes about 2-3 seconds to accelerate and when it does it flies. I believe they should do and transmission computer update because it is horrible to drive in traffic. As for the navi/enfotainment center is horrible EVERY time Im driving it says unable to connect to phone and when it does it always is saying unable to update entune when there is no update. Hopefully Toyota fixes these issues because they are NOT acceptable. Especially for a new 2018 vehicle.

This is my 4th Camry 2011, 2012, 2016 and now 2018. My 2018 XSE is hands-down the best Camry I owned. What I hate about the car is the entune and scout GPS. The Scout GPS only works when the app is running in the background, so if you are talking on the phone or kids playing with iPhone then you can cancel out GPS. Also, I hate the fact that you have to authorize the entune every time the car start for it to upload the apps to work. If I knew that the scout was the GPS used, I would have probably got the XSE v6 because the GPS works excellent with heads-up display. The 2018 Toyota Camry tech is lagging compared to that of 2018 Honda Accord because they have apple and android auto play.

Toyota needs to add Android Auto/Apple Car Play to your Entune 3.0 in the 2018 Camry (All Trims). I am officially complaining about the lack of this feature. The Honda Accord has this as Standard on most of their lines, as well as Kia, Hyundai, etc. This is keeping me from purchasing this car. This is a deal-breaker between me and my local dealer. Bad move on Toyota. Scout GPS is the worst. Google how bad Scout GPS is. Also, having to pay for Scout GPS after 3 years is also a bad move. I am not buying a Camry because of Scout GPS and lack of Android Auto/Apple Car Play.

Overall we were ok with the car despite 8 gear some what clunky shift. But in the end we realize not having CarPlay is a deal breaker. We used it with other rentals and found out how important this feature was. We just can't see ourselves stuck with this car without the feature for 5+ years. Updated 4/6/2018..... We went with the accord due to acceleration, cabin quietness and CarPlay. I'm so glad I did. Last week, rental company gave us a LE. OMG the car jumps in early start, you have to wait a few seconds before you shift to first gear. The 8 gear shift is jut not smooth. It's auto safety feature was way too sensitive. slight lane shift, the beep comes on. The car is just down right loud (compare to the Accord). especially in some road surface. It really need better sound damping between the engine, wind and road noise. My Accord has a smaller turbo engine and it's much quieter even though it rev higher. Now for the worse part, the infotainment system. You seen all the horror review and the are all true. Not having Carplay is a big mistake (this reason is enough to steer away from this car). Either BT or USB connect was a absolute a disaster. especially when my wife is trying to charge her phone by connecting to usb. My phone would random play music when disconnect from a call or navigation. When you answer a call, sometimes it sound is on the phone. Had to manually switch audio back to car. Unable to keep in the lane cause I constantly have to adjust my phone. A real safety issue. My wife absolutely hated the Camry compare to our Accord. I recommend you rent one for a week to give it a real world test.

2018 Toyota Camry drives in reverse

RGP79, 10/10/2018
2018 Toyota Camry SE 4dr Sedan (2.5L 4cyl 8A)
25 of 28 people found this review helpful

Purchased my 2018 Toyota Camry February 2018, very exciting to finally get a Camry. At about 500 miles problems started. The car dash lights continually came on indicating collusion. The rear seat belt indicator keeps beeping when no one sitting in the middle seat. The cars lane detectors not working all the time, the jerking when accelerating from a red light is scary to the point of a car almost rear ending you. The Entune system has Bluetooth connectivity issues seems to forget to automatically connect a lot. Gps not accurate and not user friendly. Getting on a highway is almost impossible since the car lags when accelerating and finally when you do get speed every light/ sensor on my dashboard turn on. Front camera regularly prompts me it’s off or not responding. This has been going on for the last 7 months until past weekend as we were leaving my home the car was put into drive then followed by a hard jerk the car went into reverse while in drive. Then all the dash lights/sensors came on and prompted to take car to dealership. The dealership manager of course didn’t seem convinced of what we said so he turned on the car and he experienced the same thing, he looked scared when the car went into reverse while placed on drive setting. This car has been giving us problems since 1 month into purchase. The dealership now says the cars computer went out, ok if that’s the case we have taken this car to the dealer on 4 separate occasions for the same issue and now all of a sudden they determined a computer failure? The car has been on diagnostics 4 separate times been told they couldn’t find anything wrong. This is a nightmare car. I have almost been in 3 separate car accidents due to loss of power while merging on highway or continuous jerking at every red light or stop sign. Now car remains at the dealership and we have a rental until they decide what to do next. This car value has depreciation to the point I can’t trade it in without loosing a significant amount of money and with this major repair, I’m sure it will be worse. I regret the day I purchased this car. I have documented all my issues with the car since March 2018 but that isn’t enough to prove I purchased a lemon according to Toyota. The dealership wants me to keep an ongoing video and picture archive before they will help me. Again the car hasn’t reached 6500 yet. I do like the body style and feel of the car but it’s very unfortunate that the reliability is non existent. I’m still make my payments on time but don’t have the car to enjoy.

Entune 3.0 horrible, JBL audio low qualit, build quality bad. Front doors sound extremely cheap and hollow when closing. My XSE has a loose roof, noticed day two of ownership. Told it’s needs complete roof. Parts alone close to $4k. Really poor and customer service is not up to par. When they contact you they leave instructions to call back. Not possible and make tons on excuses. Car looks great, has exact fuel economy as listed, rides and handles well. Oh last thing. Never lift the driver side wiper to clean or remove snow or such. It hits the edge of the hood and damaged the paint. You can’t lift the wipers. What idiot approved that design. Really questioning this purchase.

I purchased this really sporty looking XSE three weeks ago and love everything about it from the outside, but that quickly changes once I get in it , I absolutely HATE the navigation and apps programs that requires me to plug my phone into the car to use its horrible Scout navigation system. I did test drive it, but it took me several days to get around to programming the horrible so called infotainment system. so for now I have a small Garmin Nuvi stuck to the windshield of my brand new car with a useless seven inch display that I cant use for anything but the radio. As a comparison one of my other vehicles is a five year old Ford FX4 crew cab pickup that has a ford factory navigation system that blows this Toyota afterthought away.

This review is based on the XSE V6. Things I like: (1) Interior and exterior styling, I have the Celestial grey with the black piano top and red leather (2) Performance, 301 horsepower and 8 speed are awesome in sport mode (3) safety features, camera view and pre-collison are great (4) value, for just under $40K this is money well spent (5) Toyota reliability. Suggested improvements (1) driver memory seat (2) some cabin finishes look cheap, USB and 12 volt area (3) in econ mode transmission is jerky at low speeds. If you want a spirited driving experience with good tech features get the V6.

Regret

2018 Toyota Camry XSE 4dr Sedan (2.5L 4cyl 8A)

I leased a 2018 Camry XSE (4cyl) in December of 2017. Within a week I held great regret about my decision to go with this car, brand, and dealership (2nd car from them). During the final inspection of the car, I noticed the large plastic divider between the two panes of glass on the panoramic sunroof had fallen down. The dealership immediately fixed it, which was greatly appreciated. Everything else seemed to be perfect. Within an hour of leaving he dealership, the divider had fallen again. It being late in the evening, I called the dealership the next day and had to take the car in a few days later to have it repaired. This has continued on now over 5 visits to the dealership for this specific issue. Each time they simply clip it back in place, and it falls down within minutes of leaving the dealership. Getting the car in the winter allowed me to experience another fun flaw in the car- when the temperature is low (I'd say under 50), the speakers in both front doors rattle to the point of nearly driving me insane. The dealership has denied they do this when the car is sitting still in the heated dealer maintenance shop (which is true). The moment you drive the car however, which the dealership does not do, the rattle, which can be easily heard over even the loudest music, commences. Other issues have included: metal door edge guards pulling away from the car/rattling, back seat seat belt alarms going off randomly, grinding noises from the automatic parking break (have not had addressed yet by the dealer). Total I have visited the dealer around 12 times, and have taken off work for about 3 total days having work done on this vehicle. Toyota corporate's response is simply that the vehicle is under warranty, so keep having it repaired. My lease is for 3 years, and the warranty only lasts 2. I am greatly expecting heavy service bills when that warranty is up as these issues just keep occurring with no end in sight. On my last visit, after many employees telling me how odd these issues would be for such a great car, a service employee mentioned that all the problems I've had have been experienced by others, and I quote "Toyota just rolled these things out too fast". This car has made me long for another brand, and feel regret about having even gone near the 2018 Camry XSE. I should note: the car is very comfortable on long rides, and the engine seems to work well. (Credit where credit is due)

Transmission problem can be fixed with TSB-0330-17

Transmission problem can be fixed with TSB-0330-17 software update to the ECM (Engine Control Module). The TSB update fixes problem with "Shift Shock on Initial Startup or Reacceleration". The TSB document introduction as follows "Some 2018 model year Camry vehicles may exhibit a shift shock when shifting from Park to Reverse on initial startup or a delay/shock when reaccelerating quickly after slowing down to a stop or near stop. The Engine Control Module (ECM) (SAE term: Powertrain Module [PCM]) logic has been updated to address this condition. Follow the Repair Procedure below to address this condition." Visited dealer and re-flashed the updated firmware to my car. The difference is noticeable significantly on a 600 mile one-day trip!. The car is now zippy and delivers the full power!. Anyone having issues with jerky transmission or slow acceleration can try re-flashing the firmware to fix the problem at zero cost! You can find the TSB document by googling it. Thanks

2018 Camry SE Thoughts

I recently purchased this car last month and it has been wonderful. The transmission can be a bit jumpy if you are too quick on the gas upon take off as it hunts to find the right gear (being an 8 speed auto), other than that the gearing has been really smooth. I love the style of the SE (mine is black so it hides those black plastic fins well) and the overall layout. With only 700 miles, I can't comment on long-term reliability but I expect it to be great being a Toyota. Gas mileage has been 25.3 mpg. combined so far and I only expect that number to increase. I love all the safety features including radar cruise and auto high-beams along with RCTA and BSM. For those of you looking at the panoramic sunroof, I wasn't that impressed as it only leaves a 12 inch or less opening if you are actually wanting to open the sunroof. So far the ride and handling has been great on the new TNGA platform and I hope to have this Camry for many trouble-free years to come.

This is a new design from the ground up. I've owned 2 of them (dealer let us trade in the 1st one as a replacement). They both suffer from awful transmissions. When you first put this car into gear in the morning, it slams really hard into gear, and rides terribly until it warms up. I've driven and owned several cars in my life, and never experienced this expect for on a 2003 Chevy Impala, and that car's transmission failed within a year of those symptoms. Research it, it's a widely known issue with the 2018 Camry. In fact, Toyota has already released a TSB on the issue, and they came up with a "software" update to the computer to fix the known issue. Except, it doesn't do anything. I believe it is a physical mechanical problem that cannot be fixed with a software update.

The car can not decide what gear it wants to be in. It randomly jumps and skips and bucks. I have had the car in 4 times. Test drove with a tech and he felt it and said it's not right. Toyota sent in a tech and wrote on my report that erratic shifting is normal there is nothing wrong with the car. What!! Are you kidding. Toyota or the dealer wants to fix the problem. The car is not safe. DO NOT BUY THIS CAR. IT IS NOT SAFE.

Entune 3.0 major problems

Apple iPhones are incompatible. The main feature of the Entune 3.0 suite (Scout moving maps) is inoperable with Apple iphones. Even when Scout worked as advertised (briefly) it seemed to be a throwback to 5 years ago, now that it dose not even work is unacceptable . We have had nothing but trouble over this issue in spite of countless hours with the dealer and Toyota support since we purchased the car in Nov 2018. This has spoiled the entire new car experience for us, with no hope for a solution from Toyota.

Delay in acceleration caused a near accident

Similar to Befuddled's complaint, I needed the 2018 Camry SE to accelerate and it took 1-2 seconds to do so, in the interim a car was approaching me from behind. When the car did finally accelerate it did so quickly, jerking the car and immediately loosing traction, i.e., the car was now out of control. THIS CAR IS UNSAFE AND WILL PUT YOU IN HARM'S WAY. DO NOT CONSIDER BUYING THIS CAR. Dealership maintain's the position - again similar to other posts - that 'this is how the transmission works, it is working as expected'. . . WHAT? In 35 years of driving I have NEVER had a transmission do anything like this. Going back to Kerry Toyota in Florence KY for a this time for the same issue next week. Also, Toyota the manufacturer is now involved. By way of contrast, the Honda I drove for 14 years prior to the Camry would have accelerated and steered thru that whole situation without pause, hesitation or being out of control. I am at the beginning stage of discussing with an attorney, so, last points of contrast - a) I have never, for any issue, taken a new car back to a dealership for any problem, ever. I have been happy and satisfied with my purchase, and b) I have never in my life had to even consider the need for an attorney due to a faulty product. Until the 2018 Camry SE transmission. THIS CAR IS A RISK TO THE DRIVER AND PASSENGERS. I UNDERSTAND THE 2019 CAMRY TRANSMISSION IS UNCHANGED. BEWARE! Dec 2019 Update... regarding transmission... junk as previously stated. New... rear seatbelt warning alarm does not work correctly; it does not stop ringing after someone in the back seat who previously did not have their seatbelt buckled, then buckles their seatbelt. I am told their is no weight sensor in the back seats and the alarm has to do with the back doors being opened and closed... bottom line is that the problem had to be ‘fixed’ by DISABLING THE REAR SEAT ALARM, THUS TURNING OFF A SAFETY FEATURE. That is not simply not right. Utter nonsense. Never again

ENTUNE IS OUT OF TUNE!!!!

Whoever sold Toyota on Entune - should be fired and shipped far, far away by using Entune. They won't even make it out of the parking lot!!!. Entune is the WORST excuse for GPS. It freezes when you are using it for a trip, and you have to stop and reprogram. If you are parked and program in a destination, it will say GPS is not available at this location! Are you kidding me?!!! Communication Error - it won't hook up with my phone. What if I want to leave your phone at home, you are screwed because you can't use Entune. Then they give you this bright orange cable rather than a neutral color that stands out like a sore thumb in your car. I like my Toyota, but Entune sucks rocks! A year has passed, Entune has made some improvements for Android users, but it still continues to freeze, no GPS is available. I just have learned it is a unreliable GPS system. I thought I would be keeping this Camry for a long time, but Entune has changed that quickly. I will not be buying another Toyota unless they get rid of this GPS system. If I could trade my Camry, it would only be the Scout GPS system. But, right now is not the time to trade. I have given up entirely using the stupid GPS system. When I have to use it, I turn off the BLUETOOTH for my phone in settings. Then I use WAZE. I just couldn't take the frustration and anxiety the Scout system gives. It has failed me so many times, when I needed it most trying to go to an unfamiliar destination, I just found a work around.

Traded in out 2016 Toyota Van XLE for this and been nothing but trouble. Shifts horrible and at times the engine response because of it is flat and scary. We've had it to the dealership 3 times now for a burning smell under the hood. Finally the dealer has given us a loaner car and had the engineers come to check the car throughly. Were scared to park it in the garage or drive it as were afraid it might burn on the side the road or worse yet burn our house down. Will update this review if they fine the issue. I would not recommend this car to anyone currently. Some of the interior pieces could have been made better and the lack of GPS on all models is disappointing but were not surprised because the GPS we had on our Toyota Sienna was not great either. Toyota missed the mark only offering the GPS option on the XLE and XSE and supposedly they have to be V6 models as well. One of the things that frustrates me the most about the 2018 Toyota Camry is the trunk. you can only open it from the button on the dash or the key. If the car is running the key will not open the trunk. Why is there's not a switch on the trunk lid to open it from outside baffles me. Update: 6/15/2018 1. Turns out there is a trunk switch just its not in the middle where you'd expect it. Took us two month to realize where it was and not open the trunk from the inside. That being said the Key fab wont open the trunk if the car is running. 2. Today while on the interstate doing 65MPH the active collision decide to go nuts. It about got us into a rear end collision wreck and the people driving behind us were not too happy. The scary part was were in five lanes of traffic doing 65mph and it had no reason to engage. It just engaged and skidded the tires with us like 10 car lengths behind the car we were following.
