I will never buy a smart car again
My 2016 smart car with only 51000 miles was just totaled due to a wig flying up under car and getting caught in transmission, and causing transmission failure while driving on HWY. Its absurd that a wig could seriously destroy a smart car. This was my second smart car, but I will never buy another one. There should be more to the undercarriage to prevent something like this from even being possible.

Great little EV
Not a car for everyone but it can really turn heads. It is small but I can get easily to 300 plus pound people even those well over 6 ft tall into the car with what seems to be the surprising amount of room. The NASCAR design safety cage, so I'm told, really is much stronger and safer than most vehicles. I tend to drive it about 50 mi a day and charged it home, and the charging costs very little especially compared to the gas I was using in my old Nissan Murano. It has enough cargo space to carry a week's worth of groceries for my wife and I and most things we really need. Yes we still have a gas car but tend to use it for longer trips and not just going out to eat or around town for small shopping trips or sightseeing. It is surprisingly comfortable. The heater very much or the air conditioner in the summer you do get a range hit but not anything more than why you would see in other electric vehicles. In negotiates the hills here in Tennessee with ease and is a favorite for little kids all around the subdivision. It is interesting to see a car where other smart cars recognize it and hawk or wave almost every time.

Dissapointment, too many problems
The car gets less then 30 mpg, not 39/36. The gas gauge is not calibrated and the driver side window is lifted off during windy conditions and whistles noisily. This has not been fixed during 2 services.

Lease turned in
I turned in my car after three years as the lease was up. The one problem it had during 23,000 miles was the "check engine" light came on and a heater/coolant valve was stuck, making the engine warm up slower. The Mercedes dealer who performed the warranty repair told me it was the tenth Smart they had encountered with that problem -- so it may be a vulnerability that should be watched. Unfortunately, it would have been a $500 repair out of warranty and the dealer could not assure me the "new" valve was any better than all the old valves that had failed in two years.
