Ok car...but many problems
I bought this car new! Two weeks later the front wheel bearing and struts started to make noise. It took the dealership 4 times over a two year period to access the problem. I found a better mechanic who fixed the problem. Fast forward 6 years and 100k miles later my check engine light is on due to the catalytic converter and my speedometer goes out on long trips. I will never buy the first model redesign that comes out again without reviewing the ratings. Overall the car is reliable but the STRUTS need to be better. You get what you pay for in an economy car.
2000 Nissan Sentra SE
If you are looking for a 4dr with better than average performance, decent fuel economy, and "blend in the background" styling. This is an excellent car for the money. I put over 20k miles on mine and love it. I was looking at an A4 or Jetta but at the time they were only putting out 150hp for 1000's more. I love my Sentra SE. I cant speak for the other model levels. Enjoy!!!
19 years, 285K miles, 3 wrecks - still runs great
I purchased this car new. In 2001 I was rear-ended by an 18-wheeler that was traveling 70 MPH. Because the car was in neutral, my infant daughter and I walked away without a scratch. Two other accidents over the years and 4 people to drive stick in this car. Car still runs great! Only downside is the car rusts easily so mind the paint job and wash undercarriage regularly.
Excellent Car for its price
The car is actually fun to drive. Transmission is very responsive no annoying downshifts. The engine is a bit noisy. Steering is CRISP; virtually no body roll; tight turning radius; very good road feedback. The car handles well at highway speeds. Two words on brakes be gentle, or youll warp your front rotors in no time. Already had two recalls: faulty crank shaft sensor and defective rims the dealer took care of both problems and have done an excellent job. One major complaint: the metal under the hood (supporting brackets, heat shields, wire harness brackets, etc) had started to corrode. Mileage is very good I get consistent 33-34 miles/gallon.
Long Term Reliability Issues
I purchased my SE in 2000, with great excitement when it was first released. I took care of it very well. However, after 8 years and 108000 miles later I am highly disappointed in Nissan. I had to change my alternator at 70K, A/C malfunctions at 75K, and most importantly check engine light is on since 85K and can not be figured out why. Fixes are always temporary and its a chronic problem with this model year. Car has lost its appeal as well is its agility and power due to these problems. I would not buy another Nissan again.
