I picked this particular Mercedes because it is a beautiful design and offers the same driver assistance features as the high end MB models: standard brake assist, lane keeping, front and rear cameras and sensors, blind spot and rear side warning. I added the optional full assist package with 360 “cameras” road sign reading and speed adjust, etc. On a well marked highway the car will drive itself indefinitely with just a finger on the wheel. A tap on the turn signal stalk gets an automatic lane change when it’s clear ….. very convenient and I use the feature often. But styling alone would sell me on the car. The CLA looks especially good from the rear quarter where the curved roofline joins the simple curves of the lower body. The interior is years ahead of mid range MB models and competitors with a continuous multipart screen that covers most of the dash. The infotainment controls are doubly or even triply redundant with touch screen, steering wheel, and a pad controls for most functions. It is so much easier to use while driving than the iDrive system in my BMW that I actually use most of its features. There is a voice activated assist that gets simple commands right, but copes poorly with anything beyond that. For example trying to get the odometer reading bu asking (to avoid changing any of the driver’s three info screens to see the odometer), proved impossible. The promised computer learning curve so far, in over a year, is close to flat. The standard powered front seats are comfortable and roomy for average height people. Good leg room with thigh support extensions, but sexy styling provides minimal head room. Rear seat suffers more and space is very limited but we don’t use the CLA if we have more than two adults in the car. Engine performance is good. Turbo boost comes in smoothly, but the dual clutch 7 speed transmission is often jerky and hesitant while driving in traffic. It has three performance settings with comfort setting the default. I drive in sport setting in traffic because low gears are held longer and there are fewer shifts made. Any good manual driver will shift more smoothly than than this transmission. The CLA comes with more standard features than comparable BMW offerings but doesn’t offer equal performance. It is the “luxury” alternative and has an interior that beats most, if not all of its competitors as well as higher line models. Give this car a traditional torque converter transmission and I would give it 5 Stars.

A COMPLETELY NEW CLA

I recently traded my old 2016 CLA 250 for a new 2020 CLA 250. Although I was happy with my 2016 the new model is totally different and substantially better. The previous negative review must have been out of the USA (and was a 2019 model) since MB doesn't even sell the 220 model in the US. I have had mine for 6 months and love it. It is significantly quieter and quicker and has a smoother ride. The interior is plush and tops in its class. The user interface is incredible and you talk to "Mercedes" to accomplish tasks, etc. And make sure you get the ambient lighting package which is just simply cool. I recently went on an extended road trip and got 37-41 MPG at 74-84 mph on cruise control. Not bad. It all boils down to personal preference for sure but most drivers will really enjoy and appreciate this car!

This car is good looking, amazing fast machine which would always push my adrenaline to a next level, though I would not recommend buying as the suspension is way too stiff on the CLA 35, it would make you feel every small bump on the road. I got the 19 inches wheel, I suggest Mercedes not to offer more than 18’s on this car as my 19 incher’s are bent due to all the road conditions even after being very careful with the bumps. All this leads to rattling noises in the car my sunroof / door panels was fixed a lot of times but the rattling wouldn’t stop coming back, this is really irritating which is why not buying this car would save you a lot of trips from the service centre

Worst car I have ever owned

I have always been a fan of Mercedes brand. In 2016 I had a first chance to spent some time with Mercedes GLA, which I leased for one year. I was very disappointed by the car in most aspects. The build quality was poor, but by far the worst part was the extremely noisy diesel engine (its impressive how Mercedes managed to develop 2,2 diesel with all the modern common rail technology that sounded like the tractor from the 60´s). The dual clutch transmission was also not far from tragic. In 2019 I got an interesting offer for the new CLA 220 petrol- I liked the way it look and even the unpleasant experience with GLA did not ruin my love for the Mercedes brand so I bought it I have about 6k miles (10k km) on it now and I unfortunately have to say I really hate the car. Let me start with positives: • the car looks really good, especially from the front (the back is more controversial, the car still has the same problem as the previous generations – thin tires makes it look like its a cheap sedan version intended for the developing markets). • The new MBUX infotainment system is quite good, I really love those large displays and its also a one of the “wow” factors. • I paid extra for the multibeam headlighs, which in most cases work as they should and the amount of light it provides is just amazing. • The engine is really good - Im very surprised – the car is very dynamic and I enjoy driving it fast. The negatives: I know that a lot of people will say - “you bought a cheapest Mercedes, so what do you expect?” but I paid double the price of well equipped VW Golf so I would expect to get at least the quality of the Golf. Unfortunately I don't. Things I hate • double clouch transmission is a joke-I have never in my life had such a bad transmission in a car and my cars included cheapest budget brands. Unfortunately I realized that it is the same transmission I had the experience with in GLA. You can feel each and every downshift and up-shift. Traffic jams are hell on earth with it-it shifts up and down so roughly that I feel like Its having its first driving lesson. When you slowly arrive to the red light and want to accelerate again, you get kicked so badly that I´m some times almost worried that the engine will stall. • Interior rattling – the interior rattles as on 15 years old car. The rattles in the driver side B-pillar started during the first miles. Then the rattling from the passenger back door appeared, then the rattling from the sunglasses compartment, from the passengers B pillar, from the passenger doors. It appears under different temperatures and under different humidity. And of course as it appears randomly and I am not able to replicate it to the dealer. • I got window airbag warning light on twice already. First it was on passenger side, got it fixed by the dealer. A week later the same thing appeared on the drivers side. When I had a test drive in B-class before I bought this car, It had the exact same error on the screen, so apparently this is some kind of whole small platform issue • The rain sensor is very poor. Mercedes has only 2 levels of sensitivity – 1) does not work almost at all, 2) works randomly and usually very bad. Especially at night I end up pushing the manual wipers button all the time • One of the frame-less windows stucked and ended up not going down when opening the doors. The next day from some reason it worked again. • I got already about 5 warnings that the “service A” is due (which is not true and the dealer did not know why the warnings are popping up) • Line assistant in new Mercedes cars (not only a CLA case) is insane – every time you approach the solid line, the car rapidly engages the breakes on the opposite side . This is so rapid that it can cause a heart attack as it feels like you hit some one. As I´m driving in the city, I simply sometimes have to cross the solid line meaning at least 3 times per week I got this shock from the car. • I paid extra for the improved audio system which is still mediocre at best. The subwoofer in the trunk is covered by plastic made out of yogurt caps and every time you play something with a bit of a bass in it, it rattles. • Got plenty of false positive warnings from the parking sensors when arriving to the junctions. • Keyless locking mechanism does not work from time to time • I expected the to be safety benchmark, but its far from that – try to find moose test on YouTube – far bellow average. • the car sits so low you have to almost stop in front of every speed bump • the key is designed in the way that I accidentally open the trunk every time when having it in my pocket and just bent (ok this may be my fault) My passion for Mercedes is definitely gone now. I will never in my life buy another product from this brand, even though I believe that the rest of their portfolio may better.

CLA 250? More like CEL 250

Don’t get me wrong, the aesthetics and modern tech of the interior are pros. However, this vehicle has had horrid reliability. In less than a year, I’ve had 3 separate CELs, with the latest requiring a cylinder head replacement (partial engine rebuild). It’s a shame that a good looking car is let down by its reliability.

Don't Buy it if you want to spend money on tires

I bought 2022 model last year and so far I have had twice flat tires! Seller never informed me about the tires and the fact that I have to take the car to the dealer for a flat tire ! Roadside assistance service is great but you have to be patience because your day will be ruined waiting for the towing company, uber or someone else to pick you up after the car is towed. When I complained about the tire issue , they just told me that I was not the only one with the same problem but no solution was given. I was expecting more from a Mercedes dealer !

This car is trash. It's beautiful from the outside, cuz that's where you are going to enjoy it most. I know most people buy a car to drive it but this car will give you a head ache. Literally. The car rattles like nobody's business. I actually avoid driving my car and would much rather ride with someone else or walk. No matter the volume or the sound system settings the doors and the pillars rattle constantly. The rattling is most apparent when it's warm and any time you turn. You can make a slight turn like a lane change and the opposite door will rattle. If make a U turn, a left or right turn, or drive on to a highway exit or entrance ramp with a curve, you'll think some was kicking from inside your doors. Mercedes-Benz service men can hear the issue because I've sent videos and thoroughly explained what happens but, all they will say on your service ticket is the car is operating as designed. If this is the design, which I'm sure it's not, it's for sure flawed!!!! The car is supposed to be the on the affordable side so perhaps they did cut corner on the materials, but yet and still, it's a Mercedes-Benz. No matter the class, Mercedes-Benz is held to high quality build expectation. I'm very disappointed in this car because had I known my car would sound like someone was shaking a tin can full of pennies, I would have never brought it. I feel scammed and stuck with this car as the horrible dealership I purchased the car from, along with Mercedes-Benz USA customer service, they refuses to acknowledge that this is a real issue. I don't think a rattling car is cool, or a new innovative wave. It's a flaw and a defect and Mercedes-Benz should not be allowed to sale this car knowing it's built terribly. People who don't like their cars rattling should be allowed an option to get out of it! This is just wrong!! I'm disgusted with Mercedes-Benz! I will never buy another Mercedes-Benz anything!!! I want out of this car and as far away from Mercedes-Benz as possible. CLA 250 is a NIGHTMARE!! I walk to my car when I have to drive it almost at the brink of tears. Pouring out my hard earned money into something I can't even enjoy listening to my favorite song in. Mercedes-Benz CLA 2020 was the biggest SCAM of 2020!!!!

Misinformed by Miscommunication

Should have gone to SM MB, 01/17/2021
2021 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class CLA 250 4dr Sedan (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 7AM)

I leased a CLA 250 in October 2020 and was told that the car came with "run-flat" tires. I was shown the trunk area, which didn't have a spare tire and apparently didn't need one because of the "wonderful run-flat" tires. I loved the car and proceeded to negotiate pricing. At the time of financing, I was convinced to get the tire and wheel warranty based on the finance manager's rhetoric about being able to drive 50 miles on a run-flat tire and not having to pay out of pocket to repair or replace the tires or wheels. Fast forward to November 2020, I get a flat tire. The tire goes flat immediately, causing concern for these supposed "run-flat" tires. I had to have to car towed to the nearest Mercedes Benz Dealership (Downtown LA Motors), who informed me that the car did not have "run-flat" tires. I was shocked. Of course, I had the dealership double check the system and was told again that my car should have come with "run-flat" tires but instead have "summer" tires. Nonetheless, Downtown LA Mercedes Benz service department kept my car 9 days for a flat tire! There was a lot of back and forth with the service department and the tire and wheel warranty company. The entire process was excruciating and stressful. I eventually called Calabasas Mercedes to get clarification on the tires and appallingly got the run around. I was transferred from person to person and voicemail to voicemail. Everyone I spoke with claimed that the car is listed in the system as having "summer" tires, not "run-flat" tires and they don't know why I was misinformed. Angel, the service director claimed that the issue was an employee training issue and apologized for the confusion. It wasn't until I contacted corporate that I was able to get my call returned by Michael Franz the general manager. Michael also apologized that I was experiencing tire issues and reiterated what I was already told about having "summer" tires. He contacted the Downtown LA dealership and had the service charges waived (which I shouldn't have been charged in the first place because of the warranty), and nothing else was done. Michael told me that I should always try to bring my car in to the Calabasas dealership so that things could be handled to their standards in the future. As a long time Mercedes customer, I am deeply appalled by the actions and customer service of both the Calabasas dealership and the Downtown LA dealership. I was depending on both of the dealerships to take care of me as a customer and to give me accurate information. I would have never purchased the wheel and tire program if I would have known that the car didn’t come with run flat tires. Despite the dealership claiming that there is a training issue amongst the employees regarding the run flat tires, I would still think I had run flat tires currently if I hadn’t gotten the flat tire. I feel dismissed and deceived by all parties involved. As a female customer, this situation feels very predatory. To be lied to about pertinent information about the car and then held responsible for the error as if I made it, is outrageous. It absolutely makes me think twice about purchasing another Mercedes, as well as, wanting to keep the current car that I am leasing. Im second guessing everything I was told. What else didn’t come with the car that they stated should come with the car? Will it take another breakdown or flat to discover another snafu? Do I really need the tire and wheel program if I have regular tires? Can I cancel the wheel and tire program or am I stuck in a contract because the additional charge is tacked on to my lease payment? Should I get a spare tire for the car since I have regular tires? All of these questions run through my mind daily as I drive the car. And the most important thing that runs through my mind is that Mercedes didn’t protect me as they should have through this process. I felt unheard by everyone I spoke with regarding the matter and the entire situation has caused stress and anxiety. I expect more from Mercedes Benz.

My 5th Mercedes, my first AMG

Sean , 10/26/2021
2021 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class AMG CLA 35 4dr Sedan AWD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 7AM)
1 of 3 people found this review helpful

Having owned (leased) 5 other Mercedes, I was ready to step it up to the AMG line. No, it’s not “a real AMG” as it doesn’t have a hand built engine, but the 302hp is just enough to put a smile on your face. The styling of this car is outstanding. I have 19in black wheels but swap them out during the winter. The ride is a bit harsh but I’m not one who buys cars for the ride quality, as it’s a proper sports car. Interior and tech is crazy cool, although I “set it and forget it” and don’t really play around with all the features. MPG is great, i average 24. The only con is the transmission. I had the same Dual Clutch 7 speed in my 2014 CLA and didn’t like it. Same for the CLA35. It’s jerky, especially from a dead stop. There’s a noticeable lag before the clutch engages and the shifts can get confused, hesitating at times. Still does the job though. I’m used to the odd behaviors at this point. One other oddity was a random glitch in the software. While driving on the highway for over an hour, the car suddenly wouldn’t downshift and barely accelerated. In 4th gear it wouldn’t upshift. I pulled over, shut it off, waited 5 minutes and started it up again. The problem hasn’t occurred since. The dealership said unless a light pops on it was probably just a computer issues and turning it off/on again would solve it. Not very encouraging but like I said, it hasn’t happened again. And that was 7 months ago. It’s funny how you can get used to driving a fast(er) car. When I first got it I was blown away by its speed. No it’s just “ok” and I find myself wanting the CLA45 when my lease is up. We shall see. Overall, this is the perfect “starter AMG” that will seduce you quickly.
