Miata--best kept secret
Purchased a 2000 Miata for my wife in June of 2003. I thought the car was a joke until I drove it. Interior is a little small for me but perfect for my wife. The car's handling is outstanding and can't be beat on those curvy, hilly roads. Maybe a little underpowered at the start but once rolling it's got plenty of getup and go. Even with an automatic transmission the economy is great at 26mpg around town and over 30mpg on the open road. Plus the car appears to be well built with perfect alignment of doors, hood, trunk lid and body panels. I'm now a Miata nut who leaves his T-top Camaro in the garage and takes the Miata out to burn up the roads.
A "real sports car"
This small car was designed to mimic a '60s Lotus Elan. It looks and drives like a sports car should. Mine had automatic transmission, but I would have preferred to shift manually. It has a moderately firm suspension, excellent steering and braking and is a delight to drive. The seats have limited adjustability and a big man would have trouble fitting in. It is very noisy; the top, the engine, the tires and the wind combine to drown out the radio at highway speeds. A sports car is supposed to be noisy and the noise adds to the joy of driving. The top is easy to put up or down and it's really watertight even in a Florida downpour. The radio is a Bose and sounds great at low speed or stopped. Performance excellent and suited to the car. I believe Miatas are the most popular race cars in the world. It is not a cruiser car for long distance driving. At 70 mph it feels like 100 but it surely is fun.

My Miata
This is my second miata. I had a 2001 for a short time. I love the body style and the size of the car. It also handles very well. It's a lot of top down fun for a reasonable price.Gas mileage is good and I believe the repair costs will also be reasonable.I was also treated very well at the dealership. Things that I have not liked about the car include:cramped interior ( I'm 5'10"),I would have liked more acceleration ( maybe the turbo) and the clutch shatters if you don't give it enough gas on take off from a standing start.
First New Car
The 2004 Mazda Miata Mx-5 is my first car. The handeling is great, and while it's a little lacking in acceleration power, the car makes up for it because it's so fun to drive. I learned how to drive stick on it, and I had no problems. The clutch isn't tricky at all. (I had previously driven automatics.) The car turns heads. The exterior is amazing. The interior is a bit tight. The cup holders are in an awkward spot. You can hit them with your elbows. The sound system is great. You can hear everything clearly with the top down.
