First and Last Mazda
Bought our 2003 MPV new. It only has 60,000km on it but it has cost us a lot of money and time to keep it on the road. PCV hose, TCM and various 'little' unrelated things. The real pain is the dealer dings us $110Cdn every time they hook it up to the 'computer'. We bought this van because we thought Mazda was a reliable and durable brand. NOT SO. This is our first and last Mazda vehicle...
Best vehicle I've ever owned
Bought it new in Jan 03. 13 years later and 190,000 miles it's still running great. The only issues I've had was the ignition coils going other than that normal wear and tear that should be addressed. My coworker has the exact same model and has 289,000 on his.

Great minivan, would buy another in a heart beat
Bought new in 2003. Had to replace the #2 coil three times but the part is cheap if you buy it online. Also replaced the alternator about 4yrs ago. Rides and handles like a car and has NEVER left me stranded or failed to start up. Starting to make creaking noises and one of the electric doors wasn't closing so when the cable broke recently for the door it became in operable but that's ok. AC still spits ice. Traded the MPV in after 14yrs and 216.000 miles. Still running fine though the front end needed work.

The best
I've never owned a Mazda before but so far I love this van. It's perfect because it's not to big and it drives like a regular car yet it has the room for seven passangers. It has a beautiful exterior and the driving is very smooth. My husband and I did a lot of research and chose the MPV because of it's ratings.
Excellent choice
This has been an excellent van for my family. Bought new in 2002 and now has 150,000+ miles and counting. Wife now drives about 400 miles a week average and we've put very little money into it. Ours is the ES so it came with Sunroof, power doors & leather. We've used this vehicle for numerous trips across Country and in all types of weather with no issues. The only problems we continually have with it are a cd is jammed in the radio, water sloshes in the door wells which requires the drain to be cleaned, and the shocks squeak when it's cold. We've replaced the oil pan gasket and a few ignition coils but thats been it.
Longtime Mazda buyer disappointed
Have owned seven different Mazdas. All served me well except my 03 MPV ES. Problems are as follows. 41000 miles, recall for fan control module, PCV hose and fuel trim code correction. Also replaced a leaking crank seal. 42500 replaced #6 ignition coil and spark plug. 47500 replaced leaking oil pan gasket and coolant line leading to rear heat/ac. 84000 replaced coils #3 & #5 plus front sway bar links. Other problems during ownership include replacing over half of the exterior bulbs, considerable body rust around rear wheel wells and the paint finish flaking off of the alloy wheels! Sorry Mazda, I don't give second chances now that so many brands both foreign & domestic build quality cars.
Good Mazda
We purchased this van with 62,000 miles on it in 2008 for a great price. Made me wonder if it was a lemon. We had to have a van and it was the right price especially compared to Toyotas and Hondas. This van has been a blessing! 25 ,000 miles later and it runs perfectly. Do all my own maintenance and the fluid levels are always spot on where they were before. Ours is decked out with all the modern options of 2003 and was way below the cost of comparable other vans. I would venture to say you must check this van out if you are in the market for a van. This seems to be a reliable used purchase flying below the radar thus a much more reasonable price.
2003 MPV LX - Bought New
My MPV was bought new and now has 143K miles on it. It has had all the issues that others stated here. Check Engine light is a regular happening! Catalytic Converter issue that I will ignore until the end! Replaced the two common coils in front - water issue/design - stupid! Leaking rear AC antifreeze tubes - under warranty at 130K - thanks Mazda! Tubes were rusted gone! transmission issues - reprogrammed in 2004 and seems to be ok since. Rust around rear wheel wells AND bottom seals of front doors! Happened at 35K miles in beginning! Worst design - no power lock button on pass.side door! No dimmer over-ride to switch on inside lights after 10 Minutes! Ugh! AC is weak! Heater is weak.
Bought it new and it was the worst van
I bought this van in 2004 brand new.By the time I traded it in at 82,000 miles, the service people knew me too well.I did all scheduled maintenance yet had to replace:transmission sensor, CV joint, all coil packs, EGR boost sensor, starter, radiator, engine mounts, oxy sensor, coolant reservoir, control arms, range selector switchpurge valve, manifold ans more to the tune of thousands. The body was rusting and the carpet wore out quick. After forking out 20,000 to buy it and all the expensive repairs on parts that should not have been worn until after 100,000 miles, I am upset with Mazda makers.I paid 400 for a sensor and was told the convertor, tranny coolant hoses and water pump were bad.Trade in!Grrr
Still a great car at 166K
I bought the MPV new in April 2003 and have properly maintained it, but have not babied it at all either. Almost 16 1/2 years later, I still love driving this van. I took it on a 3140 mile trip this summer, and it was a joy to drive at 75 mph and 24-25 mpg. When my wife and I finally started looking for a new car in late 2017, we would have bought an updated MPV in a heartbeat. Its virtues for me are: 1. Great visibility because of the large windows 2. (at least mine) the light interior makes it feel airy and open 3. The seats are very comfortable and the seat-steering wheel-pedals geometry I find comfortable as well 4. This car has been very reliable--with one exception: I had to replace ignition coils three times. The third time, I told the repair person, "Replace all six coils. Use lots of the sealant material you use so that water does not have a chance to get in and cause corrosion, which makes the coil misfire. I do not want this problem again." He did and the problem has not re-occurred in three years. I had the shift-shock problem at the beginning. Mazda took care of it under warranty, and the problem went away. I will keep driving this van until something big breaks. It is still fun to drive, and I will actually be sad when I finally part ways with it.

money pit
do not buy this vehicle. they are money pits. the coil packs go out in all of them over and over again. the pvc hoses always crack in them, the power door cables break in them, and the newest problem is the radio, interior lights, and power doors quit working and none of the fuses are blown. noone knows how to fix the newest problem. these vehicles are built to fail and to be a money pit.
I like my MPV
I bought this new in 2003 and it has been a good investment. I've had to replace the radiator, two coils and that's about it. I really researched this purchase and knew exactly what I wanted. At the time, dual sliding doors was unique. The 5 star safety rating was nice too. I've got to say that the body styling is still timely and doesn't look dated in the least. I got the white and coupled with the fact that I always keep my vehicles looking their best, she still instills pride of ownership everytime I approach. I did find a little rust on the sealing seam of the right sliding door but a light sanding followed with a dab of white POR 15 and problem solved. I do shoot WD40 or something similar with the red straw up into the door drain holes. After the initial engine breaking, I've only run full synthetic oil changed every 10,000 miles. The AC has always been very reliable in fact, I've never driven the van without it on. There's an AC vent right where I usually have my right hand on the steering wheel. I soon found out that it would turn my hand numb from the cold. I almost think you could preform surgery on my hand without nova cane. I am tempted by all the great safety features new vehicles have, hybrid looks way cool too but let's face it, Old Nelly Belle is paid for and barring any unforeseen component failure, I'm going to drive her forever.

MAZDA MPV
Comfortable on long trips. Good seating position reduces fatigue. The automatic side sliding door make putting an infant in the car much easier. Good handling. Good looks for a minivan. The interior is simple with good fit and finish. I drove a 1889 MPV to 210,000 mile with few problems. It was a rare 5 speed, manual transmission. I got 170,000 mile out of the original clutch. I hope the new one will repeat this reliability.
Ze MPV Rocks !!
Quiet engine Smooth tranny shifts excellent acceleration gets to freeway speed seamlessly Does NOT feel like a mini-van Very carlike ride & feel Reversing & sharp turns felt very easy HUGE moonroof I could stand side facing through it with plenty of shoulder room, crisp audio sounds FM & CD Excellent visibility blind spot checks were a breeze due to the BIG slider windows which sit low Big side view mirrors HUGE windshield. The RPMs were impressive:700 rpm from idle till 50 mph. At freeway speeds they still stay below 2K.
"M"ost "P"leasurable "V"an
Wow -- I am only 28 and I never thought of owning a van, but after test driving the MPV on a track at the Mazda Rev It Up event, I was in love with it!! I bought an ES with the GFX package which comes with a body kit carbon fiber interior trim and fog lights. I also have the power dual sliding doors ans six disc in-dash CD changer. Most people think the MPV is an SUV and I have been asked numerous times by bystanders as to what type of vehicle it is. I think the MPV is so under-rated and you never see any on the road. This van is so comfortable and handles like a sports car -- I don't think I will ever buy a car again! ZOOM ZOOM ZOOM!!
Want to Buy Mazda, Read and Think Again
My MPV is yr 2003 with 109xx miles. As of today 2-27-2018, it broke down on the road and we decide to quit it. I would like to list everything I suffered through with the car so help you consider, if you still dare... 1. Bad Transmission/Performance. 2. Spark Plugs replaced 3 times/design issue. 3. 2 out of 4 windows had electronic control issues 4. replaced 4 sensors to remove the engine light, ouch. 5. noise from under the hood-spent 2 grands and problem kept hitting.. 6. Interior mirrors all popped and dropping. 7. driver side window can't roll back on. 8. Slide door press/lock failed in remote control. 9. oil leak 10. engine oil draining bolt had worn thread causing leak.

Stay away from Multi Problem Vehicle
I bought this used car at 103k miles & drove it for another 5k & the engine gave way. A spark plug popped out while the car was still running, just to learn that it had damaged the cylinder. I had to replace the hard to find & fix the engine for $2500.00. Burned my pocket to that extent that I will never buy a Mazda MPV (multi problem vehicle) Not at all a reliable vehicle. Very labor consuming when it comes to repair.
what's not to like?
200 hp and ft/lbs of torque in a minivan that is 7/8 the size of its competitors. Zoom Zoom. So it fits in the garage nicely next to the sedan, and I especially like the passenger side windows that go down. If passengers want to wait in the car while I run in for somethingn they can. And it's really quiet inside on the highway. What remains to be seen is reliability. I'm a little concerned that it's a ford duratec V6 under the hood, so we'll see.
Don't Do It
Here's the thing: The transmission is a joke. It constantly wants to downshift on interstate hills to jerk your neck out of joint. Then at low speeds it has an abupt upshift and it feel like someone has rear-ended you. Did I mention that the fuel economy stinks? I didn't? Well, it does. Did I mention I had body rust in the fourth year? I'm an angry white MPV owner, man. Good thing they quit making this bomb.
Well satisfied
We moved into a mini-van when my 3rd child was born. 2 yrs old and 24,000 miles. 5 yrs later still driving it, has been on many vacations, have done only routine maintenance, and have replaced the tires once. The transmission may be going, but up until now, it has been very reliable and a great vehicle for my family.
Breakdown
Purchased vehicle new. Unresolved problems with automatic sliding doors (sometimes they work other times not) 68k miles, engine light on, transmission range switch inoperative, replaced at cost of $326. 70k pull off interstate for lunch car stalled in parking lot. Able to restart by depressing gas pedal to floor, but stalls when gear is engaged. Tow to dealer $87.50, two nights in motel awaiting part and repair $236.00, replace AJ57-18-84A water thermo switch, $178.
Best Minvan Value Ever
After 5 years and 75,000 miles, our MPV is holding up great. We only had one problem, an electrical switch in the steering column that tells the computer that car is in park, failed at around 60K and cost about $380 to fix. Other than that, just routine maintenance has kept this nearly indestructible van going down the road.
A great car
We bought our MPV new and it has been a great car. I like the exterior design and size. Honda and Toyota went bigger in 2003 leaving Mazda with this smaller size which is more agile and I think a sleeker design. The driving experience with this Mazda is surprising: it really is almost sporty, in any event very responsive. My only beef with this vehicle is the shifter sort of gets in the way of the controls on the dash board. Other than that, the moter runs like a top with enough power. At 74k miles now, the transmission seems like it might be acting differently, but no actual problems. After 8 years though I'm afraid my wife wants "something new" so I may look around. But a great car.
This is a special vehicle!
Excellent and reliable minivan. Its spacious inside, but not bulky to drive. Its 18 years old now, over 155k miles and still going strong. Had to replace coils, radiator and catalytic converter ... just regular maintenance. The engine and transmission are rock solid! Used it to pull 5' x 10' fully loaded trailer. Don't believe myths that cars supposed to be replaced every ten years. Minimum expectation is 20 years with a regular maintenance, some LTC and keeping it in the garage.

Good Value
We bought this vehicle new and have had an overall positive experience with it. It handles very well and although it is a smaller van, it has met the space needs of our family quite well (3 kids, mom and dad). Reliability has been above average but not great... no major problems. We've taken it camping on some very rough roads over the years and it has come through unscathed.
Most uncomfortable Vehicle
A nice van overall but so uncomfortable I drive it only when I am forced to. The padding on the drivers seat is very firm on the side bolsters and digs into your thighs. It is impossible to get comfortable. The steering wheel also seems to be off center making it even more difficult to get comfortable. On a short drive it is responsive and fun to drive but don't be fooled. The interior is also too small. My kid who are in their early teens and pre teens complained about the tight quarters and uncomfortable seats as much as I did. The power doors are also painfully slow.
Transmission
I have experienced problems with the transmission of this vehicle. When it automatically shifts from 2nd to 3rd gear it slams into gear. The more passengers you have the bigger this problem becomes. Mazda knows about the issue and is currently trying to work on a fix, however the past 4 months have been unpleasant. Still waiting.... The dealer claims they have 3 other vans with the same problem.
Best kept secret!!!!
I owned a MPV 1991 before. For my next van, seat management was hign on my list. There are only 2 models with the third row folding in the car (wonder why they don't all have this feature). In my case, the Odyssey was too big. I park the van in my garage. There is one area of concern which is the motor. So far, I'm please with the Ford Duratech performance. Maybe they can spend some time about reducing fuel consumption.
It just keesp running!!
I bought this van brand new. Two deer have totaled out the front quarter, it is a little top heavy and dangerous on water, but for the most part if you put water tires on it that fixes the problem. I am upset that they discontinued the van.
Honest review by a happy owner.
Between me and my wife we have to fight who gets it to go to work. New V6 engine great 200 hp. all I need it has plenty of power for city or highway for any normal family. The size is perfect for 7 passengers normally we have 3 or 4 but we have had seven once . So if you need to always move a ton of people or 50 sheets or dry wall buy a larger van you will be happier. We liked the MPV Mazda features like the power rear windows and the fold down rear seat, and the modern looks. My wife has a two year old Protoge' and has been perfect so far.
Kid Hauler
I was very reluctant to buy a mini- van. Now that I have owned it for 6 months I couldn't be more happy that I purchased it. The electric sliding doors are a major convienance with 2 kids. There is a plenty of room for all your needs when you fold down the 3rd row seat. Good feel when cornerning and has car-like to drive to it. Great alternative if you would rather spend 20k instead of 30k plus for Toyota or Honda.
One of the Best Minivans
Bought our '03 LX in late 03 when they had great rebates. This van has done it all for us. It tows a popup camper (our LX has the tow package), hauls the kids AND the grandparent thanks to the 3 row seats and has conquered the New England winters. We also like the size (a bit smaller than the Honda, Toyota). No serious mechanical problems, all the little things were covered under warranty. V6 had plenty of power and is rides very well on the highway. Do yourself a favor and check out the used MPVs - they are a bargain!!
Rust bucket
Our 2003 started rusting around the wheel rims and door edges a couple of years ago. The mechanic now warns us that the frame has rusted beyond repair. He said the rust was pretty typical to this car, and I have notice other MPV 3's have the exact same issue.

Love It!!!
Compared the MPV (ES) vs. Honda Ody. Fell in love with the Mazda & wouldn't trade it for the world. Sporty, fun to drive and loaded with features. Great vehicle!
Too Many Issues!
Brought her brand new. 85k on it, rust all over, new brakes twice, still make noise, O2 heat coil bad, fuel pump replaced, relays bad, replaced, tires replaced 3 times. Very bad gas mileage. Definitely going back to Honda when she is gone.
soul of a sports car
Have had the MPV ES for two months, love it - handles well, great features and well built
loved this van
We bought our MPV used with 50000 miles on it. We have not had any major problems other than a sensor on the gear shift went bad and the auto sliding doors quit working, cost 500 to fix. It was really nice on long trips and had plenty of power. In the winters we lost 4 mls per gallon and the check engine lite would come on, then in spring all would be fine. We had planned on keeping it for a long time till a kid ran a stop sign and hit the back fender of the van at 60 mph. We spun around a few times and hit a telephone pole. The van was a loss but my 6 yr old and i walked away with a few bumps. I hate to see it go and now my wife wants a volvo.....
Great van
With 2 growing kids we needed more room than our Altima had to give. We looked at all the minivans rated with good reliability and it was down to this or the Honda. The Honda dealers won't deal at all and the Oddity was bigger than I wanted. It looked like it wouldn't fit in the garage very well. The MPV is the perfect size. The 200 HP engine is very responsive for a van. It handles great, you almost forget it is a minivan.
Grear Buy
The size is perfect for me as parking is easy, and loading of people or "stuff" is a snap. Twenty point six (20.6) MPG on 87 octane fuel around town is a big plus. It's dollar value and proven Mazda reliability were strong buying motives for me. Handling is on a par with some American sports cars I have driven.
A good reliable van!
Bought this van used in 2004 with 34k miles. Has been a great van. Two problems worth mentioning: The transmission has a rough shift from time to time. And I had some engine work done 2 years ago. Now I have 116k on it and no other complaints. Thinking of selling it due to my plan to take a long road trip this summer. Not sure. I would highly recommend this van. Handles like a car-better then any others I have driven. Has held it's value rather well.
2002 MPV
I've owned my 2002 MPV for 4 months and love it. I considered every minivan and ended up with the MPV for its sporty look, feel and drive, considering it's a minivan. It's smaller and easier to maneuver for my wife and handles better than any minivan out there.
02 LX
This is a very nice vehicle. We love the handling, power, visibility from the inside, and especially the interior egonomics. Very glad we went with this over the Honda, or Toyota. Those two definitely had inflated pricing. Had droves of Honda and Toyota owners looking it over at Saturdays Soccer games. Not a single build defect noted in our first 1,000 miles of ownership. This is the best minivan in this class today hands down. This is our second Mazda, and surely will not be our last.
Mazda MPV truly does go ZOOM with style.
Have been shopping for a while when I started looking at the MPV. I drove one for a day and feel in love. I had been driving a 2002 Explorer. The MPV moves into traffic very quickly. The handling is very impressive. I was also very surprised at the fit and finish. It put my Explorer to shame. For a relatively speaking inexpensive vehicle it is a lot of car of the money....
One of the best car we have ever owned
Our 2003 MPV has 60 miles on it and is one of the best buys we ever made. It's been a great "school bus" for the grandkids, a versatile hauler for big purchases or trips to the dump. It's been very reliable, with only one set of tires and normal oil change maintenance needed.
2003 Mazda MPV (tow pkge) 66K
I rock out to Metallica-speakers are adequate! Do yourself a favor replace the spark plugs @35K, otherwise they burn out the coils. Put some good quality ones in. come on Mazda can you at least put some decent plugs in it and tires that last more than a year. Oh, and meet other makers warranty up to 100K!
SWEET
NOT THE BIGGEST MINIVAN OUT THERE, BUT THE PERFORMANCE AND HANDLING ARE EXCELLENT. THE HIDE AWAY THIRD SEAT CREATES A NICE CARGO AREA. MY WIFE SWORE UP AND DOWN SHE WOULD NEVER BUY A MINIVAN, NOW SHE ABSOLUTELY LOVES THIS VEHICLE !!! WE SPRUNG FOR SOME OF THE EXTRAS, POWER DOORS, IN DASH CD CHANGER, WHICH PUSHED THE PRICE A LITTLE HIGH (THE WIFE HAD TO HAVE LEATHER...) BUT THE BASE MODEL IS AN EXCELLENT VALUE VEHICLE.
This minivan kicks ass!!!
When I decided to trade in my 2001 CR-V for a minivan, I wanted to make sure I would get the ample space I needed, but without sacraficing the looks and reliability. Guess what? This van kicks it's ass!!! Everything about it is fantastic. The side by slide seating, fold down rear bench seat, alloy wheels,CDplayer, and beautiful handling absolutely won me over. No other minivan can compare. Although I bought this primarily for my wife and kids, honestly i can't wait to get behind the wheel!!
Great transition vehicle
Moving from an Audi A4 to a minivan becomes a necessity when baby #3 comes. With money tight and space even tighter we decided to start looking for something bigger. 2 vehicles fell into our sights: Suzuki XL7 and Mazda MPV. The MPV wins because of it's superior useage of interior space and surprisingly decent handling ability. Got an end of year LX almost fully equipped below invoice price. Looking forward to the BMW minivan in 2005/2006 (u heard it hear first!)
mpv lx 2003
everything in this van works and looks well. the smaller size is what makes this model work for me. when alone i drive aggressive and need the smaller size to maneuver in traffic. when driving with four in the van it is comfortable and well mannered. i drove with six in the van once for 150 miles and nobody complained and the van handled well and braking was excellent. my review takes in to consideration of the value factor, with the discounting with rebates by the dealer. decent lx package for less than 21k.
Happy until
Purchased our Mazda MPV new in 2003, We were happy with the way it handled and found the van to be very reliable except for a coil replacement at 75,000 miles and oil pan leak at 125,000 miles, seats hard as a rock and now at 140,000 miles the transmission failed on the interstate without notice, leaving us stranded for days. $3200.00 later with a Re-man transmission from the local dealership we are back on the road. Never again Mazda, no second chances.
