No Valet Protection! Beware of the Small Things

I have deep buyer's remorse. I agree with most of fawning reviews concerning the car's style and how it drives. But oh how I wished I'd examined it more carefully for practical lifestyle needs, when I went for that test drive. Subsequently, I was bummed to discover the only way to open and then lock the doors and trunk is to dig my key set with the key fob out of my pocket, rather than pushing a little button. A couple days later I was shocked and mortified to discover that I cannot secure my identity papers or anything in the glove box or the trunk, because there's no valet system whatever--not even a key. I live in Los Angeles, and now I cannot valet, without removing a bunch of things?

At 160K miles, I finally got the shifter replaced as a small 10 cent part broke off requiring the entire shifter to be swapped out. The car now acknowledges it is in park when it is in park instead of thinking it is still out of park. There seems to be a whining sound when I steer, and I thought it was I needed steering fluid but apparently the Mazda 6 series doesn't utilize power steering fluid, so gotta see what that is about. Other than that, the car runs well and I have been using the lowest octane of gas since I bought the car. So using a higher octane seems to have no effect on engine performance. I still give the car high props, actually. I am at 150K miles. Look, the mechanics run great. It's the little things that suck. I have yet to get the shifter fixed where the car still thinks it is not turned off even though it is in park. Sometimes you have to turn on and off and jam the stick into park like 8 times in a row for it to acknowledge it is in park and the car turned off. It is beyond annoying. And the arm rest has now broken twice (it is a simple fix once you get the replacement part). Outside of that, it is still running very well. I'm at 132K miles. Now, the driver's side door upholstery has come off. The car still sometimes doesn't acknowledge it is in park and after turning off the car, still alerts you to put it in park. The steering wheel varnish, the knobs, all have peeled. In cold weather, the back window sounds like it is going to come crashing in until it heats up, and then it stays silent. Look, the guts of the car seem to be functioning fine at 132K miles. It's just that the interior is literally put together with scotch tape and spit. I will not be buying another 30K Mazda again, ever. Now I am at 126K miles. The armrest...this time it broke and I don't even use it that much. The back door drivers side upholstery has become totally separated from the door. The shifter I still have not fixed and just deal with having to turn the car on and off up to three times for the car to finally acknowledge it is in park. Bottom line is the mechanics of the car seem to be good. It is the cheap manufacturing quality of the interior that sucks. The steering wheel for instance leaves marks on your pants if there is any type of pressure between it and your clothing when getting in and out of the car. The steering wheel dye is flaking off all around the perimeter of it. And the way it interfaces with your ipod is maddening (via USB cable). If you put it on "shuffle" it will always remember the order and it won't shuffle at all. Haven't figured out a workaround for that one yet. I am at 117,000 miles. First off, the shifter has been acting up since around 60K. The car doesn't think it is turned off so I have to restart the car, jam the shifter in park and then turn it off again. Sometimes, it takes 3 to 4 times for it to acknowledge it is off. Next, the accelerator has begun to squeak when pressing/depressing it. Out of all the cars I've ever owned, this is issue is a new one. One thing that sucks is whatever material they made the steering wheel from, if your pants and leg put pressure on it sliding into the car, it will leave a black streak on your pants. Again, cheap material. These are not major annoyances, but annoyances nonetheless. Had an alternator belt go out on me but that was a relatively simple fix. My ride has 82,000 miles on it. At 50,000, the leather armrest totally fell apart and I had to get it replaced. Cheap materials to say the least. My newest problem which started happening at 60,000 miles, the car does not recognize the shifter being in "PARK" and it beeps to put it into "PARK" in order to turn off the car. WTF??? Sometimes it takes three attempts to turn the car back on and firmly jam it into "PARK" so as to have the car acknowledge it is in "PARK". STOOPID! The back window rattles something fierce when it gets cold, but then stops rattling after it warms up. What's up with that, Mazda? When using Bluetooth with iPad 3, the shuffle and repeat functions do not work. They are grayed out. Once you have shuffle on your iPad selected, the car's Bluetooth will inadvertently turn it off after you leave the car. The only way to get shuffle back on is to clear the Mazda from the iPad, delete the device from the Mazda and start all over again. AWFUL. And the bluetooth always starts to play music off my phone instead of having it disabled like I do at the beginning of my drive. It's like it forgets. I don't want the phone as my music player. As for shuffle, it seems as if it remembers three different orders of shuffle and truly doesn't randomly shuffle the songs. I just don't get it. Gas gauge does not reflect true miles left remaining under 15. It plummets in minutes so don't go by it. The GPS is utterly useless. Can't program it or search unless at a standstill. Check engine lite came on after 1100 miles. Front speakers sometimes cuts out. 48K miles, new battery. Can't get into trunk with dead battery which is dumb.

I owned the 2014 Mazda 6 Touring for about 1 month. Love the exterior styling (grey) with the bright Sand interior. Smooth shifting automatic even if the car is too eager to up shift. Wish there was a sport mode to keep rev higher but you can switch to manual mode. The Mazda 6 could use a little more power like a turbo charge version. The seat is a bit on the firm side. There is a little more noise than your typical Honda or Toyota. The 19" standard wheel looks great and help with the handling. I owned a V6 Maxima before so I do missed the extra horse powers. Love the MPG, getting around 30-31 mpg on heavy foot. Update @ 25K miles No problems so far. Tired is worn but may last another 5K miles. In wet condition, traction could be better, maybe improve with new set. MPG is about 30-31 Update @ 50K miles New Michelin A/S Sport tires. Quieter than original, good grip, but less steering feedback and a maybe more oversteer tendency. No problem so far, no squeak. Paint gloss faded a little.
