A few quirks...

Since I took the last one in my area there were a few snags that I discovered after I took it home. First, the A/C blows air on the windshield from the inside defrost vent CONSTANTLY. That means if you live in a humid climate, you will have fog buildup. Mazda is playing dumb and doesn’t have a fix yet. It can get to a point where this fog is blocking the drivers view. Second, the passenger seat squeaks when you press on the side cushion. Last, the entire center consol below the radio was scratched to hell. They did replace it after a 2-week part order and 3 trips to the dealer. So be very careful when cleaning and inspect closely when test-driving.

I actually traded in my 2002 protege because I fell in love with this car before I even bought it. I love how it has a soft growl when I start the car sounding powerful. The seats are comfortable for long drives which I have done. The trunk is huge and helped when I moved. I am currently at 81,000 and just recently changed the brake pads for the first time. I am just now having a few problems but that's given with the mileage. The only other complaint that I did have was the stems on the wheels seem to snap off when you tighten your lug nuts and I've lost about 5 of them. But either then that this car has been very reliable for me these past 7 yrs.

First two years, great car, fun to drive, great looks, everything. Then the car starts to idle roughly, which triggers check engine light. Take it in for a diagnostics test, and it says to replace camshaft position sensor. Did that, only to have the car get worse. Take it into the dealer, who states that the car's engine has suffered a catostrophic failure. Oil burned up fast due to the cylinder head rings cracking. That resulted in the pulleys breaking off. Funny thing was, oil was replaced 4K before this happened, and no oil light ever came on throughout the entire ordeal. Fought with Mazda hard, but they never budged, so I got stuck with paying 3K left on a car that I don't even have.

This is truly a drivers car. With two kids and a desire to have a BMW, I spent have as much and twice the car. It is as close to a BMW as you can get and it is far more superior than its competition.

Bad Transmission

I had only 50,000 miles on this car when the transmission started slamming into gear. They definitely have an internal problem with their transmissions. They cannot be rebuilt. You have to purchase another one from Mazda. $4000.00 later with only a year warranty it runs better. After I picked up my car from the shop another one came in with the same problem, same year. This should be a recall..........
