Great SUV
When you unlock the car the lighting seems to softly glow to on. It is very welcoming. The seats are very comfortable and it was easy to get them into the right setting quickly. The Nav must be the best on the market.Loaded with features and all of them are easy to operate. The Mark Levinson system sounds amazing. Controlling it from the steering wheel makes it very easy to use. Cruising at 70-75 the engine is very quite with an MPG of around 19.
Great SUV!
It drives like a Lexus sedan! Quiet and refined but fun as well. Nice pickup for such a big car especially off the line. An absolutely gorgeous interior. It's like getting the LX for 15K off.

Get Rid of that Barn Door!!!
My wife loves the barn door, its her car, but come on Japan, you didn't research the barn door enough. It is completly unpractical for America/Americans - you should only offer it in other countries. I can give you 20 plus examples why it is a poor design. The salesman said it was for saftey, I just laughed and said it was the biggest line of BS a guy has ever said to my face. If you can get over the BARNDOOR, this car offer sooo much more than all the competitors, the MB looks like a minivan/mailvan, the BMW doesn't even compare (it does in my opinion have the best rear door, Bring back the tailgate!!!!!!!) and the Volvo is an underpowered joke.
Excellent
There is nnothing I can say except for excellent in every way!
GX 470...conquering one road at a time
This is my first SUV and coming from a two door sports car..this has been a smooth transition. Interior appointments are incredible. The engine is very athletic even with the size. Virtually no road noise and comfort beyond belief.
Great Car
Fun and easy to drive.
Everything is Excellent - Except....
What a great car. Already own an LS and thought the GX would be a great addition. As usual, the car is a great Lexus product, but they should have continued the thought process on the last 6 feet of this vehicle. The rear door is terrible. The way that you have to manually lift up the third row seats is something you would find in a $10,000.00 SUV. The head rests are so big, you can't recline them and move the seats behind. Using a strap to hold the third row seats up is also a bit cheap, inconvenient and un- imaginative. Come on Lexus, you have an absolute 10 if you would fix these problems. Everything else, perfect!!
Awesome Vehicle!
What a way to travel! Cruising at 75mph is like sitting in your living room -- amazingly quiet. The Mark Levinson sound system is spectacular. The Navigation system is easy to use, accurate and fast.
awesome
Of all the cars and SUV's I have ever had in the 32 years I have been driving, this car is the ultimate. I have had no trouble whatsover with it. It is fast off the line and rides wonderful! I love the exterior design and the original rear end design, looks so sporty! To think the BMW suv is 15,000.00 more that this!
A Great Experience
I just got rid of my Acura MDX Touring. Paid over MSRP for it in 2001. The GX's interior is far superior to the MDX. The GX includes full sized lighted running boards, a full sized spare Bridgestone Dueller tires. Wood and leather steering wheel is std. The Dealer was very fair, and gave a nice discount. Purchased a std model with a rear spoiler, two seat for $3.5 K more than an MDX. This is a great SUV, but don't try to follow me off-road in your MDX, you wouldn't make it.
Another Great SUV
After 4 years of my RX300, I decided to get the GX470. I love it! Silky, strong engine, smooth ride and great comfort! The navigation system is the best I've seen. While I think the GX470 is fantastic, there are a few things Lexus should change: My RX300 has more cubbies/storage places! Seat warmer controls are too out of the way. Trip computer buttons should be on the steering wheel (they have two blank spots) instead of mid-dash where they are inconvenient. Major pet peeve -- the seat belt retractors are typical Lexus -- they don't retract well!
Ok, not what I expected
I compared the GX with the Volvo XC90 but chose the Lexus due to immediate availability. It drives nice, but I've had vibration issues at highway speeds that the dealer cannot replicate, the flip-up seats rattle, and the transmission slips and hesitates occasionaly. Maybe I should have bought the Volvo...
engineer
perfect car with all thing you need for daily use
First Impressions
Great Luxary SUV for the price. Easily justifies the MSRP compared to much higher priced LX470. Drive comparable to luxary sedan (traded Mercedes Benz in for GX470), AWD feature with center locking differential makes it perfect in any driving condition. Lexus DVD based GPS Navigation system is way superior over MB.
Quite Pleased
I am quite pleased with GX 470 I purchased in late July. My Blizzard Pearl GX has turned several heads. I haven't seen this clor as of yet on the road or at any other local dealerships as of yet. However, I plan to trade in my 2003 for a 2004 because I just can't live with the after market installed DVD system. I will definately get the factory DVD this time. The current system doesn't take full advantage of the factory installed features like the Mark Levenson system or the factory installed system integration. The backup camera in the 2004 will be a blessing.
My best driving experience ever
You'd feel comfort, luxury and safety once you get on driver's seat. You sense you're surrounded by a solid, protective shield . . and that you are in for a smooth, powerful yet quiet ride. This was how I felt when I test drove the GX 47. (I rated it better compared to similar test drive with MB ML, 320 and 500). But back to my GX 470. The actual driving experience proved even more exhilirating. I have never felt so cool driving 400 miles each way ever. Why? Driving 70-75 mph was a breeze and accelerating to pass those semis was no sweat. The GX 490 is indeed my best driving experience ever.
Lexus Sex Us
After only 2 GX test drives, reading reviews on Edmunds and ClubLexus.com - I was sold! Also considered Volvo XC90 and BMW X5 and was turned off in that process. Volvo- disappointed by the interior quality and general station wagon feel. BMW - was not big enough and can only rely on its performance oriented characteristics which were not outstanding with the 3.0. Finally, after my wife was SO impressed with the test drive (concerned by SUV gas mileage) and said - "this is NIIIICE". We were sold. Had it only about 48 hrs. but really love the new addition to our family. Even our 2 yr old daughter said "nice car" after sitting in it.
Lexus GX470
Beautiful car, easy and comfortable to drive. Should have put in the back up camera and given additional color selections. I am sold on Lexus and if I traded it in, it would only to get anything new they add to the newer models. It is a beautiful vehicle.
GX470
It is an excellent car. Even though it is a big truck, it can pick up the speed quickly and quietly. It is so confortable that some times you just don't want the trip ended. This car has a roomy inter space. The convenience package for the GX470 is another perfect addition to the buyer (You have to pay extra $ to get it on M- class). The only thing bothered me was that I could not get a penny discount on the window price.
Excellent Luxury SUV
This car has it all, and with Lexus great leasing program the cost is kept down. The only downside is the on board computer system, which requires a couple of hours of studying the manual to learn.
Lexus' New SUV
My wife and I just purchased the new lexus gx. So far it is enjoyable but I am now looking to purchase the Porsche Cayenne. The Lexus is smooth and navigational system easy to use. I love the engine but maybe a little more horspower would be better. We didn't like that there are no xenon head lamps or integrated turn signals in the mirrors. Otherwise, the lexus is a great competitor and should last for years.
Very nice, but needs some tweaks
Driving this car is like piloting a cloud. Incredible ride - very quiet and very smooth! The 3rd row seating is a bit of a joke though. I'm only 5'7" and I couldn't bare to sit back there for more than 10 minutes. There's no way you could get 3 adults back there comfortably. Plenty of room on the 2nd row of seats, so much so that they should have moved those forward 3 inches to give the 3rd row more room. The Radio controls kinda suck since they put many of them on the video display screen which takes a long time to navigate, and a lot of attention which would be better spent driving.
First Lexus
This is our first Luxury Car. Previously we owned two Expeditions and an Explorer. This time we wanted somethng to take into retirement. I couldnt be happier with the comfort and grace this vehicle gives to us. Not a squeak or rattle (knock on wood) and no recalls or problems with the dealer.
Lexus GX 470
I have been driving an ML 320 for the past 3 years, finally I got rid that nightmare tri star. The GX 470 is a completely better SUV all around compare to the ML 320, it behave very well for such a large vehicle. Smooth engine, quite interior and very well built vehicle, if you are in the market for a luxury SUV, give the GX 470 a try. You will like it. Dealers begin to discount now, so shop around and enjoy your new toy. I got a great deal from Lexus of Thousand Oaks ( I got a fully loaded one for way below the MSRP )
Great vehicle, good value.
Bought the GX after looking at the Cayenne and the BMW. Better deal for the money; quality is better. Ride is stiff over heavy bumps in the rear, but the ride and cabin quiet is typical Lexus excellent quality. Engine is adequate for the vehicle; interior appointments are high quality. The rear door looks goofy and is impractical, particularly when towing our trailer. Stereo is excellent, and the nav system is very well-designed and easy to use. I like the size of the shifter, but there should be more of a gate between D and 4. Overall it's a great vehicle; great size, good power, great quality.
Excellent car
Drove the Discovery, RX330, X5, QX4, MDX. none had the comfort and styling as the GX. So smooth. Nav system is intuitive. Xenon lights not available because car height would cause blindness to oncoming cars
GX 470 is awsome
I just purchased the GX and LOVE it. It is a mini LX with all the luxury and more. We purchased the fully loaded package with navigation and dvd, they are both wonderful! The car drives like a dream and you can actually park in a real parking spot with out a problem. LEXUS is one nice ride! It handles great. I don't know why anyone would choose the LX or any other luxury SUV. I tried to give the LX a shot, I just couldn't justify the 10K price difference for the same SUV that is only "inches" different. I also tried every other new and improved SUV on the market, the GX blows them all away....unless, of course, you don't need the luxury...then go for a truck.
VIBRATION: 1700rpm,esp 60mph
Problems: 1) Lexus dealerships stuff all options on vehicle and make it difficult to order without certain options(like third row seats, Lexus Link) 2) there is an unacceptable vibration which occurs at approx 1700 rpm and is accentuated at approx 60 mph...as noted in another review there is no fix yet. I am UNHAPPY.
I made the right decision.
I love my GX. I reluctantly traded in my RX (which also was a great car) because I wanted a little larger vehicle. I am so glad I did. It drives like a dream. I highly recomend this vehicle.
great car
great car, reliable, quiet, great handling, but it could use more horsepower for a v-8.
Rock Solid
I've only had the vehicle one week but love it already. Build quality beyond excellent. Small features like lighted door handles (inside) everywhere are a great touch. Nav and integrated electronics very very good.
Easy to Drive and Park
It's big and comfortable with a safe feeling as you glide along the highway. And glide is a good feeling as to how this baby handles. Don't use the navigation system for familiar trips around town unless you want to see new territory. Be sure to get the rubber floor mats for winter carpet protection. Con: Must be in park to use seat/mirror presets. Highway gas mileage is better than expected; city driving is a gas hog.
Head Turner
So far so good. The GX470 has a great look, and even better performance. Smooth quiet ride and surprisingly easy to manuever thru city traffic. The only glitch I have found is the mirrors tend "forget" the drivers side memory when taking the car out of reverse.
GX470TheUltimateLUV
After shopping around for months for the ultimate Luxury Utility Vehicle, I came to the conclusion that the new Lexus GX 470 is it for me. I wanted to enjoy the well-known advantages of owning a Lexus including the award- winning customer satisfaction and high resale value but I didn't want just another one of the tens of thousands of RX 300's and the LX 470, while truly exceptional in just about every way, did not seem worth the extra $20,000. Driving down curvy mountain roads near Sedona in the GX 470 was as exciting and thrilling as downhill skiing!
So Far...So Perfect
The fuel economy is not great but as good as expected for this type of vehicle. If I wanted better gas mileage I would have bought a 3 cyl. Geo Metro. Power is good but not great. The engine puts out less horsepower but equivalent or better torque than the larger V8s. More power is always better, in my opinion.
Great
This guy is worth the money!
Great
Great car. This would be the greatest car if it had more torque.
Pa review
So a wonderful vehicle to drive...no problems or issues.
Test drive
I only test drove this truck. I own a 99 LX. Everything was great about this truck except the handling. On the freeway it was a bit loose. The 3rd row seating is comfortable.
What a great car
Purchase a new GX470 a few weeks ago. All I can say is 'what a great car.' It is well built with perfect fit and finish. Gas milage is running around 18mph with the first few tank fulls. The V8 is smooth and lots of power. It does sit high and does need HID lights.
GX 470 in a class of its own
The lexus GX 470 drives like a dream. It has all the features that you would want with an SUV at the same time feels like a car. Excellent Mark Levinson system. We love the SUV, it fits our family needs. It's a very fun vehicle and we enjoy it very much.
Full Family
My wife and I decided to trade in our suburban. We looked at several SUV's, including a fully loaded Suburban, but as soon as we drove the GX we knew that it was just a matter of color. This SUV provides as quite and smooth a ride as our Lexus GS sedan. It was much better than the Suburban or Lincoln Navigator. My family of 5 easily fits into the GX with room to spare. So, if you can give up the room of the Suburban, I highly recommend the GX.
I love this SUV!!!
We drove several luxury cars and SUV's before purchasing the Lexus GX470. When it comes to true luxury you have to go with Lexus. I have found nothing that I didn't like about this SUV. The only negative would be the price but it's well worth it!!!
Stuck in Fresno with a GX
Our fully loaded GX was delivered and we Loved it. However we learned of a few flaws that were not traditionally Lexus.( See Improvements) NOISE & VIBRATION at 50+ mph and Fan Clutch noise. I suspect the next year model to address these issues. Problem is NOBODY WILL WANT MY USED GX then. Quite Unhappy
First New Car in 18 years
Incredibly built with great power. Extremely comfortable with tons of space and torque to handle any load. Great family vehicle that's a pleasure to drive. Quiet, quiet and more quiet with all the electronics you can hope for.
drove everything...
We drove all the SUV's out there... the only "close" call was the BMW X5, great car, not practical with two kids and golden retriever! We drive Porsche's and BMW's as primary vehicles which have a tight concise ride. The Lexus has it too. We bought the base model and had the DVD installed in the head rest via after market... a better way to go. We traded in a Land Cruiser which served us well for 100k miles... we like the Lexus a lot more.
Love it!
We use our vehcle both for extensive highway as well as dirt road driving. With the number of options avaiable for ride, vehicle height and severe driving condition contingencies, this SUV has it all. Its ruggedness and durability, coupled with incredible interior accoutrements make for the perfect "country gentleperson's" all- purpose vehicle.
I am glad I bought GX470
I was debating between GX and LX. Ended up getting the GX! It is a nice car and feels very modern compared to the LX that feels just a bit dated. The performance and gas milage is excellent for a truck this size.
Defective Model
I purchased the long awaited model GX 470 on February 6th 2003. This is my fourth Lexus purchase. Due to the poor availability for test driving, I did not realize until after the purchase an unacceptable vibration in the 40-50 mph range. After taking the vehicle back for service twice, I have been informed that it is a known problem with this model but there is no fix at this time. Totally unacceptable for a luxury SUV that boasts a noise/vibration free ride. Lemon law currently being exercised.
Dream Machine
Simply luxurious all around. Solid as a tank. A true pleasure to drive. We cannot believe how smooth the ride is. Handled Canadian snow blizzard with ease. It's difficult to imagine a better overall package.
