Some say it’s dated. For me it’s perfect. V8 power, tried and true, full time 4wd, 6500 pound towing capacity, body on frame. It’s been a pleasure to own, no problems, zero. Build quality, paint, interior, all great. This is a quality vehicle that will give you many years of service. Update 10/22. The GX has been perfect with zero issues. Still drives new and no rattles. Interior still looks new. Still feeling good about this purchase! Update 4/20/23 Just passed 70,000 miles. Had the front brakes done along with the scheduled maintenance. No issues at all to report. The GX still runs and drives as new, with not a squeak or rattle. The paint and interior are still great and I get compliments on it. The phone companies recently phased out 3G and it affected some of my telematics, which is disappointing, because Lexus is not offering any repair/updates to upgrade the truck to 4G. These are great vehicles and if your looking at a used one buy a 2019 or newer, which have 4G. Update 10/20/23: no issues to report. I just got back from an extended trip to several states. She was loaded down but performed well in the mountains. For a 2016 with 81,000 miles to still be as tight and rattle free is impressive. I will look at the all new 2024, but it may be out of my price range. These are great vehicles. Update: 4/24. The GX is still running perfect. No issues to report. Paint and interior still holding up very well. I use F11 Pro on the paint and get compliments on the truck all the time. No squeaks or rattles. I’m not sure you can buy a better built or more reliable vehicle. Update: 10/24 still going strong at 92,000 miles. Zero problems of any kind. Still runs and drives like new. Having a hard time deciding to keep it or trade it. When you hit 100,00 miles, you take a pretty good hit on resale. If I keep it much longer, I may just drive it until it acts up. That could be a while, I have a friend that has one with 328,000 miles. He drives it every day. Update: 4/25 Just had 4 new tires put on my GX. The SUV now has 97,000 miles on it and is running perfectly. Zero issues, as usual. I take it to the Lexus dealer for all routine maintenance, and keep all of that up to date. I usually trade vehicles before 100,000 miles, but after driving several SUV’s and thinking it over, I’m keeping this one for now. I’m still concerned about the V6 issues Toyota/Lexus is having with new engine that replaced the V8’s in new trucks and SUV’s, including the GX550. I just couldn’t find anything I was willing to trade for, because I really like what I have. In 2 weeks I will be heading north for an extended trip in it, and have absolutely no concerns. At this stage of my life, reliability means a lot to me and I have it with this vehicle.

I have been after a Lexus GX for about 6 years and recently made the purchase. For a second I thought I was out of my mind for dropping $50K+ on what is called an “ancient” platform. I thought that for only a second though. This SUV is exactly what I wanted which is a solid, bomb proof, smooth, comfortable and long term reliable 4x4 I can hang onto for the long haul. Criticisms first: 1) No good place to put your cell phone while driving. I think my old iPhone 4 could fit in the space set aside on the center console but that is it. Better cell phone storage with wireless charging would be great. 2) 3rd row seats. Don’t need them, don’t want them and not sure if somebody should be buying this car if they plan on using those seats frequently. I would rather trade the 3rd row seats for a lower cargo area = more room. 3) More interior storage? Kind of scraping for #3….. Likes: 1) If you are the kind of person who performs their own maintenance, this car is great. This is old school Toyota and most major things which will need to be maintained are accessible. 2) Very comfortable seats with a ton of headroom for taller folks. 3) New infotainment is spot on. There is redundancy for most controls with the buttons, touchscreen and trackpad. Stock stereo is decent. 4) This thing is behind on tech? Really? I know at least for me, when researching a car “tech” seems cool while reading about it but turns out more or less useless because I don’t use it after the first week. This SUV has all the important stuff. 5) The build on this car is very high quality. There are not any cheap/cost saving parts on this one. When you step into the SUV, you know it is built to last 6) The drive is great for a body on frame. Road noise is very good and not something you notice while traveling 80mpg on the freeway. The engine and transmission are a great pair. 7) I think this thing looks great and will continue to look great 8) MPG All I will say here is that the 2024 GX with the turbo six is only supposed to get 1 MPG better than the 460? Mmmm, ok. This “dinosaur” still is and will continue to be a amazing SUV. Edmonds and other car review sites have this rated at the bottom which makes me laugh. Not enough “tech”, .5 second 0-60 too slow, etc, etc. I would love to see rankings re-done by the same automotive journalists 6 years and 75K miles later, i.e. after the warranty expires on each of the cars. Range Rovers, Mercedes, BMW’s, Audi? LOL.

MPG is not great, tech is okay with Apple Car Play, but that’s not really the point of this vehicle….. this is a very rugged and luxurious SUV. It really is the Japanese G Wagon. The styling stays pretty much the same year after year and it’s near timeless. Safety is incredible and off road capabilities are as good as any 4x4 Jeep or truck if not better. Very hard to beat the value.

I watched and read many reviews on this vehicle and eventually purchased one with the Premium trim. First off, it's a body-on-frame vehicle and it drives like that - I like it, some may not. On the stock tires, the ride is pretty smooth. Even over rough roads and bumps - did I mention it's a body-on-frame SUV...The V8 is responsive - not incredibly quick but strong enough. I get 17.5 mpg on mixed driving. Every review mentions that it has an ancient engine and transmission. Other than the gas mileage, it performs well and it's bulletproof. If you're looking for a proven vehicle that can handle the rough stuff and comfortably tackle the daily drive, this is a great choice.

I've read the reviews over the years for this vehicle and it turns out the most of what "car reviewer" say is correct. But here's the rub, when compared to Mercedes it cost far less to operate in terms of maintenance cost and resale value. This means your money stays where you put it. And compared to Range Rover reliability is where the GX460 takes the easy win. If you like the the Range Rover dealership experience you'll get plenty of it just trying to keep it slapped together. If you need to impress your friends and neighbors in the short term, by all means you should buy something other than a GX460. If you need a vehicle of this type and size but you want to be able to transport you and those important to you anywhere at any time and not worry about whats going to break next the GX is the better choice. I'd like to see the ride quality improve along with the gas mileage on the GX460, but not at the expense of reliability. If you ever asked why the average age of an airplane is 25 years old and why some airlines are using aircraft that have been out of production for over 15 years, take a closer look at the GX460's build quality and compare.

Awesome GX460 Premium Plus w/Sport Package

Where to start.....I have always been a Lexus, Toyota fan, and have had many of their cars. My last was a RX350, and I loved it, but decided on something different this time. The GX460 is awesome ! I absolutely love driving this beast ! While there are some reviews that don't favor it as much because of the MPG, are say it has a harsh ride, or it's too old school, well they obviously don't care about a tried and true vehicle, which the GX460 is ! The 2023 has plenty of tech, or should I say all that you need IMO, but still physical buttons which I prefer. I am amazed and blown away at how quiet this SUV is. It is more quiet than the RX350 I drove. The V8 is silky smooth, and pairs well with the 6 speed transmission. The seats are super comfortable in the front. One of the greatest features is also the view, which is one of the best I have had in a vehicle. I love the steering feel and the hold of the road while driving. The Mark Levinson stereo is awesome. The ride height is fantastic ! If you treat it kindly, you can do okay with the mileage. Reminder this is a very heavy vehicle! My drive home after purchase, I got 22 MPG on the highway with a three hour drive. It is a highway cruiser, and super comfortable. The tailgate opens to the side which can be awkward for some, but I love it, and you can open the rear glass up and easily and put things in the back without opening the tailgate. The fit and finish is one of the finest I've seen. Excellent paint, everything lines up perfectly. It was very easy for me to make the decision to buy this vehicle because it has basically been unchanged for over 10 years, just a few cosmetic changes here and there. To me that makes it very reliable. I have the Eminent White exterior color with the Ecru interior, and dark gray wheels. It gets plenty of looks! It's sharp!! I highly recommend this GX460. If you can afford to get one, gas should not be a worry, just enjoy a very sought after tank of an SUV to go off road, or to cruise down the highway.

Chose 2023 over 2024

Traded in my 2010 GX460 that was a reliable beast. The 2023 is improved over the 2010 with the infotainment and safety features in addition to the Nuluxe interior. My 2010 had real leather and it did not age well. I got the premium plus package with Mark Levinson, as I didn’t want or need the air suspension in the Luxury. I expect this to last just as long as my last. Absolutely love these cars . I was underwhelmed by the 2024 specs with the twin turbo and only 1mpg more. I’ve had turbos before and they just don’t offer the long term dependability of naturally aspirated engines.

The 2022 GX is rock solid. It has everything I need and nothing I don’t. No bling just bulletproof reliability. Give me the Japanese quality over the German-built eye candy all day every day. My third Lexus and will not be my last. I have owned my GX for 9 months, and I like it more now that when I brought it home.

This is a great SUV for families. Plenty of room and easy to drive. If you’re looking for good gas mileage, this isn’t the vehicle for you. I was more interested in reliability and comfort. The gas mileage is why I have it 4 stars. Overall it’s a great SUV that I will own for many years to come.

I knew that the 2024 Lexus GX was going to be a totally new, revamped SUV, but when I heard that the old V8 was not going yo be in the 2024 model my doubts about the new model grew. The Lexus saleswoman also informed me that the new 2023 Lexus GX was going to be avaiblf in limited numbers for the better part of 2024 so there was no expectation for a custom color and options-I would have to settle for whatever model and color came into the Lexus dealership. There was also going to be base price increase of several thousand dollars too over the 2023 GX. One test drove in the 2023 Lexus GX sold me! The tide was silky smooth, quiet, stately and very comfortable! I have owned my 2023 Lexus GX for 6 months and every time I get into the vehicle I smile to myself at having such a beautiful automobile! The V8 is as smooth as an old Cadillac from decades past! The technology is better than my old reliable Toyota FJ Cruiser! I did not want a twin-turbo V6 and I did not want to purchase a new model year GX redesign, which will need several years to work through the inevitable new model teething issues.

Have a 2023 Blackline in white. This vehicle is everything you need and nothing you don't. The presence, drive, quietness, V8 roar are all awesome. Plenty of interior space for passengers, adequate space for hauling. A big family mover this is not, but I don't think that is what it is meant for. I know I could go almost anywhere in this truck. It's outstanding in the snow and solid on all road conditions except ice (to be expected). It's very capable off road. It's comforting to know it'll last for hundreds of thousands of miles as long as I do basic maintenance. I'm getting a solid 18 mpg in my daily 102 mile commute at 60 mph, on winter gas in Minnesota. This includes warmup idling. The Apple carplay works wonderfully and I like that it's plug in so I can also charge my phone. If I don't need car play, the bluetooth works great for everything else. Switching form carplay to bluetooth doesn't even result in a dropped call, it just switches over. Plenty of tech features that all actually work reliably. Lots of physical buttons, climate control works well, heated seats get very warm, very fast. Lexus app works great. I have zero complaints or things I would change. Scratch that, I would heat the entire steering wheel instead of just the 9 & 3 sides. But, that's a Lexus thing. I would buy a GX again in a heartbeat, no question at all. This is my most favorite vehicle I've ever owned.

You may notice the poor reviews by professionals and glowing review from owners - let me explain. I bought this truck for exactly what it is - a truck. This is not a car platform cross-over with better handling, more speed and "refinement." This truck is what luxury cars used to be: big, relaxed and quiet. Add in legendary Toyota reliability and I couldn't resist. The V8 sounds great and I get way better MPG than most people say. I average around 19-21 in mixed daily use, not bad considering my 4cyl Audi averaged 24-27mpg in the same usage. To me, the driving experience is excellent. Road noise is minimal, the optional Mark Levinson sound system is incredible, and the ride encourages you to hit bumps and potholes just to see how isolated you feel from it. Driving this truck made driving relaxing to me rather than chore. The tech is clearly a few years behind, a Toyota/Lexus trademark, but I will happily trade tech and a few MPG for years of reliability. On a side note, I also have a 2020 Mercedes GLE450 that my wife drives. It is an excellent car, but both of us prefer the GX. The joy hasn’t faded after ~6mo of ownership. No issues, no rattles, no squeaks. I drive a lot of rental cars for work and I’m always happy to get back into the GX.

First off, I have a 2004 GX, which still runs and looks great (142,000mls). I just purchased the 2023 GX Premium Edition. These cars are pretty bullet proof. The new GX rides excellent, feels very comfortable to drive, has apple car play etc. Anyone who would put a Mercedes or Land Rover above the GX is not doing any kind of long term testing. I would recommend checking with Consumer Reports because their reviews are long term, unbiased, and not just an opinion. If you want a vehicle that will not have you in the shop multiple times a year, and you want to keep it for five years or more, then it's a no brainer. Mercedes and Land Rover are great if you lease or get a new car every three years.

An old-school Toyota 4x4 disguised as a luxury SUV

I’ve recently owned a Yukon Denali and GLE but wanted to get one of the old V8 GX 460s before they went out of production. My Denali was too big and too expensive, and my GLE was too weak with minimal off-road capabilities. I got the GX optioned with captain’s chairs, Mark Levinson audio, and all weather floor mats…all I need for now. Most days I run errands around town and take my kids to school so fuel economy is not an issue, but the GX 460 also gives me the ability to take advantage of all that Oregon has to offer including skiing and camping trips. It has all the towing capacity I’ll ever need and the reliability to sleep easy on those overnight camping trips down a long dirt road. I love the visibility all around the vehicle including the huge side view mirrors. A $100 dollar adapter gives me wireless Apple CarPlay which is a perfect complement to the old school buttons and digital clock. One day, when all the newness wears off, I hope to convert it into the ultimate over-lander.

This SUV maybe dated but it is solid and reliable. See how many Q7’s are left running in 10 years and then ask what it cost to get there. With this vehicle there is no worry about extended warranties. This SUV is very smooth and quiet. Do the research. If want an SUV that lasts beyond the lease or loan look around at how many are still on the road. Yes it uses gas, but it’s worth it when you have the confidence that it’s not going to leave you stranded.

I just bought my 4th Lexus GX 460. They all have gone over 125,000 miles without any major isssues. The handle well and are unbelievably dependable. I had owned several other luxury automobiles and this vehicle cost me less to maintain than any. That includes Cadillac, Mercedes and Jaguar. Nothing comes close to these vehicles. And my dealership, Sterling McCall, ism by fat the best I have ever dealt with in my life. Wouldn’t buy anything but a Lexus. And never have it serviced by anybody but Sterling McCall. Sterling McCall and Lexus are the very best.

I purchased this since it was the last time they will offer a V8. I love everything about this vehicle. It's just solidly made. Driving it is a pleasure. Yes it weighs a lot and you can feel it. Just strong and capable. I am not sold on turbos on small engines which seems to the norm these days. I plan on keeping this car for a minimum of 15 years.

This is an amazing SUV. I do not get the harsh reviews. It’s a luxury ride with a rugged ability. We have had a GX for years. It’s reliable and takes on road-trips, carpooling, teenagers and snow like a champ. You are above the traffic— which by the way, this SUV can whip through traffic like any normal sized vehicle. While the inside may be “dated” according to the reviewers, it’s actually nicely made. It’s not a cheap. It’s made of luxury parts and you can feel that when you’re an actual owner. We are waiting for our 2023 GX and can’t wait. We checked out the Discovery and test drove the larger Mercedes and were not persuaded. Above all, once you buy a car it’s the service department you deal with from then on— No one can beat the Lexus Service Center. Top service. Always a new loaner available— even if it’s an oil change.

Smoother ride but interior design does not impress

Even though I was told new 2022 GX 460 has the same engine and transmission as previous years I feel the ride is smoother now. The engine and or fan do not sound as rough as my 2019 GX460. As far as the interior redesign, the new 10.3" navigation screen is actually smaller in height which makes a difference in seeing the route. I have to zoom out more which makes the map smaller than the previous screen built into the console. It is also more exposed to the sunlight. There is an optional anti-glare screen Lexus has when you perform a custom build, but dealers do not have it in stock yet. On a plus side, Lexus finally exposed physical fan more/less buttons but still hides AC. Now I have to do even more clicks to turn it on/off. Overall, the new screen introduced more clicks than the previous. I hate it. The touch pad is disruptive to driving and I do not know anyone who likes it. I have not tried the Apple or Android app that can pair with the SUV to allow mirror features of an Apple/Android device, such as a smartphone, on a car's dashboard information and entertainment head unit. This will be nice to mirror google maps as I find traffic info is much better on my Android phone.

Best vehicle I’ve ever owned

I actually own a 2019 GX. I shouldn’t have posted here but it’s basically the same vehicle as the ‘23. And it’s the same as when it the model came out in 2010. Yes, my info screen is comically outdated. But it gets everything done I need done and the 23 is updated. But the tranny and the 4.6L V8 have been the same for 13 years. And they are bulletproof. It does not drive like a huge SUV. The power response from depressing the gas pedal is perfectly linear, no lags at all. The transmission shifts seamlessly. The 4 wheel drive gets you anywhere. It has a full size spare underneath. I bought it used 3 yrs ago during COVID. Only had 8500 miles on it. Oil changes and tire rotations since it left the factory. Nothing ever goes wrong with these vehicles. They will last 300-400,000 miles with regular maintenance. Yeah, it hurts to go to the gas station. I burn premium unleaded religiously. I have friends who say that is stupid since it’s a big dumb naturally aspirated engine and several of them burn regular unleaded with no issues. I’m not sure why Lexus tuned it to need premium and they ought to let the dealers retune it. But what I’m spending on gas I’m saving on maintenance and peace of mind. This vehicle is staying in my stable for good. I hope my grandson will drive it someday.

Totally Reliable Snow Machine

This is my third Lexus GX. I just drove across the snow belt below Lake Erie on I80 last night, jacknifed tractor trailers and wrecked cars strewn about on my 300 mile drive. I can’t say enough great stuff about this vehicle in very bad snow driving. Its balance will keep you safer than any other 4X4, I think. The wipers are powerful, and the rear wiper with defroster and washer fluid keeps the vision clear out the back in a driving snowstorm. The DAC button will stop a crazy slide down a sheet of ice, too, hope you never need it, but if you do, it’s perfection. I have never once had anything to repair on any of the three I’ve owned- just tires, wipers and brakes. Yeah, sure, old school. Best vehicle ever when you need a serious machine in a bad snowstorm or awful rain. Sound system is amazing, too, like a concert hall. Had a Mercedes 4X4 that had a bad wiring harness. Had a Yukon that never worked. My favorites are always this Lexus or else the 4Runner (except it doesn’t come with 8 cylinders any more). This vehicle drives better with KDSS, by the way. I’ve bought them used, new- always very pleased. I purposely bought the ‘23 to get the last model under the old school engine.

Bought a ‘22 Premium plus new and within 2 weeks never before back pain started. The seats are low flat and the frame for the “ventilation” fan jams in the back with very little padding. The seats are also bucket style which hurts your hips. I absolutely love the vehicle but had to trade it due to the crippling back pain. If it fits you then it’s the best, but these seats are known for poor comfort.

Overall, I love my 2022 GX 460! Others have complained that it does not include the latest tech, is not fuel efficient, or fast like some competitors. This vehicle wasn't built for those things - it's built to provide solid reliability, comfort, a luxurious, cosseting ride, utility when needed, towing (if needed) and the peace of mind knowing that you can go to the furthest reaches of the world and get you back home in one piece! If you are looking for something that is supposedly modern looking, fuel efficient, modern looking with all the latest tech - look elsewhere. But if you're looking for a vehicle that will cradle you in comfort 20+ years from now, provide ample luxury features, and the utility to tow your toys without breaking down when you decide to venture off road, this is the one to buy! They have refined this model to the point that all issues from past models are non-existent, so it is quite reliable! 2 years of ownership and over 30k miles and it's been bullet proof in rain, snow, or anything else mother nature can throw your way! I also average 23-24 miles per gallon on the highway cruising at 75 with the AC on. I installed a chip that adds ~ 40-60 hp and 2-4 more mpg. Very happy with my purchase!

I love this car--but I don't mind old school. This car is spacious, reliable, and safe. I love the ride, the acceleration is adequate, and while some said the seats are not comfortable, I completely disagree. I'm 5'3" and husband is 6'4" and both of us find the seating comfortable. The technology works perfectly for me, and the ONLY negative is the fuel economy. However, other than fuel economy, this car has it all.

built for 6 passengers! WHY do auto manufacturers bill vehicles as “6 passenger” when there is absolutely no comfort level to the 3rd row seating. It is inaccessible to anyone larger than a toddler yet a toddler would need to be in a child car seat which there is no conceivable way to get a carseat into the 3rd row!! And there is zero cargo space with 3rd row seats up. Practically zero room for even a purse in the 2nd or 3rd row. Ridiculous! Thankfully my husband is comfortable riding in it by himself! And thankfully I have my comfortable Honda odyssey minivan!

The head lights designed is so low you can’t see Driving at night. It draws a line at the same level of the hood. I took it to the dealership to see if they could adjust them. Was told no. That they need to be at that level to not shine in on coming traffic. But I can’t see !! Not able read road signs. The bright lights are fine.

If you want a Tank to get thought anything terrain wise then the 2023 GX 460 will be your reliable, versatile partner. When you drive it you will know that it is unique and at an end of an era. No more will you have a roar of a pristine V8 monster locked and engaged with the asphalt road and non paved adventure. When it comes to safety your questions will be answered as soon as you try to take the reins of this Stallion or should I say panther. Sharp turns don’t interrupt your destination or attitude. Make no mistake this V8 panther will not disappoint. If you can get your hands on one it’s a keeper no doubt and will remind you of 100 years of tried and tested automotive engineering. Best of luck and my the Spirit of freedom and adventure accompany you on your quest.

Slow, bad handling, fuel hungry

People thinking about this vehicle that are coming from: Mercedes or BMW vehicles - DO NOT DO IT, I am going to repeat myself - DO NOT PURCHASE this vehicle if you are coming out of Mercedes or BMW vehicles - you will be super disappointing. It's super slow, with very questionable handling, fuel hungry (that I knew coming in) but who wants to average 14.2MPG of mixed driving when they say it's supposed to be at 16, not to worried about that - it's just ridiculous how this thing drives, it's sloppy, super slow, I will give it 2 stars for quality (liked it) but driving experience is horrible all the way around.

This is a terrible car to buy if you intend to drive more than two people. Literally only the driver and who ever is riding shot gun are comfortable. I’d be surprised if anyone over the age of 2 years old would be comfortable in the third row of seats, and no one over the age of 2 can easily move into the third row. The second row of seats is only tolerable, but don’t even try to have a drink that’s not in a sealed bottle. This has to be one of the most ill conceived SUVs ever designed.
