Dead on the 3rd day- LR took care of me

Bought a new 2021 Defender X. Pretty awesome until the morning of day 3 with ~500 miles on the odometer, all safety systems failed along with a gearbox failure at 80 mph on the interstate. It barely allowed me to get to safety. The out of town dealer repaired and gave it back only to have it fail again the next morning. Of course this is in the middle of important meetings as well. It remains at the out of town dealer now 8.5 days of the first 11 I have owned it. The dealer who sold it wont talk with me and customer care scheduled a call in two weeks. I have remained surprisingly calm in the face of all this, but as an engineer and technology developer I am a bit embarrassed I bought the car knowing Land Rover's reputation for reliability. I never thought I would be so disappointed with a $91,000 new car. Update.... The 2021 Defender was pronounced dead after 100 days and an incredible effort to repair it. Land Rover customer care worked hard to find and deliver a new 2022 Defender. Its exactly what I was hoping for, refined and rugged. The lemon experience has left me cautious but it is an awesome vehicle and excellent support. I kept my Rubicon just in case.

Update - 30,000 miles with no problems

Have had the car for just over a year and put almost 12,000 miles on it. No major problems to speak of. I did get a windshield crack from a rock and occasionally the audio system is slow to start up when I turn the car on, but those issues are rare and have also happened on my wife's X7 and on my Tahoe. The Defender is my favorite car I've ever owned. Comfortable, cool, great for the family, and great to load up and take to the mountains. I'd absolutely buy this car again! Update now that I'm at 30,000 miles. Still haven't had any major problems. Just change the oil and rotate the tires and it's good to go. I've taken it on family road trips for 1200 miles and it was comfortable and easy. I've also taken it off road in Moab and it handled everything with confidence and ease.

This vehicle is truly amazing! I don't worry about wet roads or snow, it goes through anything. Pot holes? No issue, drive through them. The 22" tires can take a beating. Ride comfort is not as good as our Range Rover but that is to be expected. There is a compartment or handle everywhere! No issues getting in or out and I am handicapped! The six cylinder has PLENTY of power. Grandkids argue over who gets the "way back" seat. :)

Faulty Windshield Design - Defender

Disappointed, 11/06/2024
2023 Land Rover Defender 110 P525 V8 Carpathian Edition 4dr SUV AWD (5.0L 8cyl S/C 8A)
22 of 23 people found this review helpful

Windshield spontaneously cracked (almost all the way across) on 2024 Defender Carpathian (less than 7k miles). I had no idea this was a common problem when I purchased the vehicle, but I have since learned there a significant amount of complaints and at least one class action lawsuit regarding the known fragile design of the windshield and the expense and inability of obtaining replacements. The dealer quote is ~$3400 for a replacement but the windshield is on backorder with no ETA because of the high amount of breakage (spoke to several dealerships and availability is likely many months away; one estimate was likely 6 months). Given the lawsuit and complaints, I assumed LR must be aware so I contacted them re: potential ETA, and whether they were considering a recall or handling under warranty but they wouldn't provide any information. Unfortunately, it appears that I (along with a bunch of other people) are stuck with expensive, undrivable vehicles because of this faulty design.

I purchased a 2022 Defender six months ago. 3.0L 6 mild hybrid. The 11.4in touchscreen is VERY user friendly and easy to navigate. The recent over the air update has apple car play wireless with the system, Heads up display is pretty clear. I have no issues mechanically-the SUV is quiet and solidly built and has plenty of power. The angle of the windshield may cause chips in the windshield from rocks in the road. I did change a windshield as a couple of cracks occurred. I did not seem to have this with other vehicles I own--could be engineering of this vehicle. I am very pleased with the purchase. The fuji white exterior with black roof and black graphics is stunning. This vehicle turns heads. I get lots of compliments reading the vehicle. I've had this vehicle for about 1 1/2 years and 20k miles. Mechanically the 2022 has been flawless. It is a pleasure to drive and this vehicle still turns heads. I've had the Defender for 3 years and 42k miles and no issues mechanically. Everything works like the day I bought it. The defender is a joy to drive and still turns heads--I get many compliments.

Lane assist not available & steering wheel locked

Debbie, 03/01/2023
2022 Land Rover Defender 110 P400 XS Edition 4dr SUV AWD (3.0L 6cyl Twincharger gas/electric mild hybrid 8A)

Parked at work for 9hrs. Started the ignition. The “lane assist not available!” warning came on. The steering wheel was VERY hard to turn. Almost locked. Turning it off/on didn’t fix it. Vehicle otherwise turned on and off normally. Drove forward and reverse. No other warnings. Just the power steering was lost. Had to be towed to dealer. Dealership called next day to advise vehicle required a software update. I ask why the steering wheel locked? Response: The software update fixed it. And it should not happen again. But no reason for the loss of power to steering wheel. Keeping our fingers crossed as this appears to be dangerous glitch, especially if vehicle is in motion.

2022 Defender 90 X-dynamic SE Review so far!

rondvu2, 02/23/2023
2022 Land Rover Defender 90 P400 X-Dynamic SE 2dr SUV AWD (3.0L 6cyl Twincharger gas/electric mild hybrid 8A)

I purchased a 2022 90 X dyn Se in Jan 2022 it was gently used with only 2500 miles. Prior vehicle was a 2010 Caddy SRX luxury which I loved and kept for nearly a decade. Like driving a recliner down the highway very comfy. I tried out the X5 BMW V8 which drove impressively, but just felt it had no wow factor in the looks department for the price. It did drive very well. I tried out the Mercedes AMG-43 & the 63. Honestly the amg-43 did nothing for me, and reminded me of a Subaru (not that there is anything wrong with a Subaru however there is a big price difference. The 63 got down the road quickly. The sales guy showed my husband how it would launch in 4.6 seconds from 0-60 and I kindly removed myself from the vehicle. Impressive but I felt like I would be driving a runner sled in the winter. Mercedes me was impressive as well, I did like that, but changing the border dash colors was a little over the top. We live in the mountains and can get dump truck loads of snow within hours. I loved the velar, it was sporty, quick and handled very well, but my husband had to duck his head when entering the vehicle and looked squished in the passenger seat! No head room. I was not thinking of the defender as I had saw a 4 door and it just looked too big, I mean we have a truck! Then we found the 90. It looks great! Things I love about it is, It will climb a hill/mountain effortlessly, at any speed! Its awesome. Stop and go around town its great! Turning radius is also very impressive. Glides over back roads with ease. And if you want to creep alone at 3 or 4 miles an hour without it thrusting forward. It will do it! For our terrain it is perfect. Also drove in down pours of rain and no hydro-planing or feeling like it was going to. It sticks to the road very well and feels pretty safe. There is also plenty of dash room or rather the layout is good, My husband can conduct business from the passenger side well, plenty of room to lay his phone & charger, room to jot down notes. The cons-the doors are heavy, including the back door, it does sit up a little high for a shorter person such as myself. I just got steps installed so yeah my first trip to the dealership was today and it went well. I drove it home! lol. The Meridian stereo seems ok, but I expected better, I have adjusted the subwoofer, bass, etc and sometimes the speakers still vibrate. Seems like I have to reach back a good ways to get the seat belt and when I release it to exit the vehicle, I have to do it easy or it swings back and hits the side door panel which is metal. Not good! Another con for me is on the highway I am all over the place with speed seems like my foot goes from 60's to 80's so I have started using the cruise control when driving on the highway for any length of time. Its probably just me. Thats it! So far I am happy. The pros out way the cons for me! I love the defender light up display at night, I also love the mirror signals showing there is a passing car. Yes it does require a little bit of patience when accessing the back seat, but its just me and my Husband. So it does not bother me unless is raining and i need to put something in the back seat! Remote start is on the app, but it does drink a little bit of Hi-test gas so why bother. I do wish the gas tank was larger. I have had no issues other than a wiper arm needing adjusted to sit flat on the windshield, that was also done today when the installed my side steps. Thats it! Time will tell but for what was out there on the market, the defender 90X is what I felt would be the best for me at this point in my life. No regrets and hope not to have any!!!

Great truck. 4cylinder is fine as long as you do not tow or live in mountains. DO NOT combine expedition rack with fabric sunroof. The noise will ruin you. But great truck.

Gas mileage isn’t any worse than my F-pace, But surprisingly smooth ride! One thing they don't tell you about, is there is def a parts shortage in the US. Our Defender was hit in the rear whilst parked one night on a street, took 4 months to fix side panels and wait for plastic light parts to repair so thankfully insurance covered a rental that long. Also, like many other owners there is a weird rattle in the front driver side air vent that they have yet to figure out and repair so you have to turn the radio up to not let it rattle you LOL, We've stopped other owners and they too have mentioned they hear it when the temperature is over 90 outdoors. Probably wouldn't buy another one, but it is a fun ride and makes me feel very safe while driving.

Just over 19,000 miles and a year on my 2023 Land Rover Defender S P300, and I've had just two minor issues. Apple CarPlay very rarely doesn't behave and if I toggle the WiFi off/on on my phone the issue is resolved. When Start/Stop activates, it will very rarely start back up in Neutral, but I did my research before purchasing a Rover and am pretty unbothered by these minor quirks that show themselves rarely.

Great car but acceleration lag

White rats, 04/12/2021

I bought this vehicle weeks ago from a dealer. So far interior and exterior are great. I tried some light offroading and no issues. That might be too easy. No issues on the highway too. I have seen some glitches in the infotainment system but that was something I expected. I don't have any serious reliability issues (yet). Cargo management is great because there are so many points to hook. 2.0L engine gives enough power for me but it has acceleration lag. It happens in various situations, but the most obvious case is when I was cruising at low RPM and pressing the gas pedal to the bottom quickly. When it happens, there is no reaction from the engine for about a second, and then suddenly downshift happens and deliver the power more than I wanted. While I'm pressing the gas pedal and waiting, I don't know when the acceleration will happen. It's annoying and unsafe. It feels like a turbo lag but it could be something else (for example cutting off the fuel), because I can expect faster downshifting if it is just a turbo lag. Although there is a way to mitigate the symptom. If I press the gas pedal about 20% before the moment I actually want to accelerate, then the engine reacts much quicker even it doesn't change RPM much. Probably the partial gas pedal pressing tells the system "I might want to go faster". It does something to prepare for the coming acceleration.

I ordered a 2020 Defender X during the summer of 2020 and due to COVID, I got a 2021. I have already taken the vehicle off road at Rover's facility in Asheville, NC. It was awesome going up and down the Blue Ridge Mountains and it is a very capable care on-road as well. I have had a couple of small electronic glitches, which is expected based on the amount of technology in the vehicle. After about 2 months following my purchase, the panoramic sun roof would not open and I had to get it fixed at the dealers. I also had issues with the infotainment system's connectivity to my phone (the screen would do wild and crazy things). This seems to have been resolved with one of the many software updates that Rover automatically pushes out to the on board computer. The exterior and interior are universally LOVED by everyone!! I get more compliments in this vehicle than in any vehicle that I have ever owned, including my 2006 Rover Sport (Orange), Benz SL 55AMG Convertible, BMW 650I Convertible (you get the picture). I LOVE THIS VEHICLE Note: My model is not listed on the drop down list. I have the 110X - Turbo Charged 6 Cylinder.

What’s with all the negative reviews I’ve read? Everyone needs to take a chill pill and stop being pre madonnas. Coming from Mercedes’, that brand I would say has more issues than my new defender. Two biggest things I hated about the 2020 GLE was the remote start would shut off when you opened the door, what’s the point of remote start, and if you hit the lock button on the remote twice it deactivates your keyless door handles. Anyway, about my LR Defender, Ordered mine with everything I wanted. At least budget wise, haha. I was skeptic on the 4 cylinder, but with over 600 miles now in I can say it’s more than adequate. Mainly it’s the ZF transmission that makes this engine feel more than it is given this cars weight. Overtaking cars on the highway is more than doable, quick shifts and power to my surprise. It’s not mind blowing by anyway, but gets the job done in sorta a peppy way. I’m getting 16 MPG combined, fyi! Was dreading this engine reminiscent of back in the day wrangler unlimited’s 3.8 V6 where flooring it got you no where. Aside from the engine notes, everything else is working dandy. I’ve had no issues. I traded in a 2020 Mercedes GLE, as mentioned above, and can say in addition i’ve had issues with the MBUX system and apple car play connectivity. More that once the system went into a safe mode. Also took forever to load and be able to change the AC or change something. I’ve maybe had one instance where my apple car play didn’t connect to the defender, no biggie. And can say this loads quicker giving you access to do basic things like turn on the AC immediately after starting it. My cluster is also fully digital and works with no issues. My only gripe right now is the auto sunscreen closure for the pano sunroof when you shut your car off and lock it, wish LR would give you the option to deactivate it. Recommend the convenience pack for the ambient lighting, gives the interior the pop it needs. Oh and my seats are semi Manual, for a 64k car i’d expect basic power. All in all, I’m content!

Since my first Range Rover, a 1991, then our 1993, followed by our long wheelbase 1995 Range Rover, this 2023 Land Rover Defender 130 First Edition is supremely more luxurious, more capable on road and off road. The three rows of supple Windsor Vintage Tan Leather provides such a versatile SUV! All rows have heated seats and cup holders and two beautiful sunroofs, one larger front and a separate rear sunroof! The amazing, but ease of use technology, provides such a wide variety of off-road driving such as; a snow, sand, rock climbing and more mode, or just put it on auto and it’ll select for you the best setting. Older defenders were great but watch do YouTube on hill climbing mud water rock climbing this new Land Rover defender out does them all! It has such an effortless fast smooth powertrain that it will absolutely amaze you it’s an SUV! Four months and over 4,000 miles with two interstate trips proved it a worthy and wonderful SUV. Bumper to Bumper 4 year, 50,000 mile warranty provides peace of mind. My family has found this to be a uniquely, enjoyable SUV to own, drive and appreciate all it has to offer. UPDATE: 2 years, 4 months 23,900 miles this defender 1/31 edition is so fabulous so wonderful to drive on road off road and comfortable. I can’t imagine any other SUV having features that even meet this vehicles! What an absolute pleasure it is for both my wife and I, we truly like it. It’s reliable, we’ve had no problems, and look to continue a long time ownership with it!

I have had my defender 90 v8 for about a year. An oxygen sensor failed and was replaced (warranty). Overall, the car performs well - nice handling for its weight. The car also feels more fun than other SUVs in my opinion . I can genuinely see how nice it is when I ride in other cars and compare back to my car . It has a quiet ride, but you can also hear the engine . It does have a lot of body lean if you compare it with a performance SUV like a x5 M , so I don’t really push it . I highly recommend a well spec’d defender over a typical luxury SUV.

The class of the class

I’ve driven every mid-size luxury SUV out there and the Defender hands down is the best- rugged on the outside, refined on the inside with a great driving experience we needed more room beyond our BMWX3 and the back has more room than a BMWX5. The Pirelli tires and a four-cylinder engine and the air suspension combine for a very refined yet stable ride.

2023 110 X Dynamic 6 cl picked up September 2022. Rides better than I expected. Very good power. Looks great, very good interior. Taken multiple long trips and very happy. Did have to take it in for a software update but unfortunately that is very common in all brands today due to the chip issues over the past 3 years.

Love it! And my next one is the defender OCTA!

If it was a bit taller and a bit wider, it would have been sooo perfect! A little faster as well, and thats why I'm planning to exchanging it to the new 2025 Octa! Back to my current 2023 8 Cyl and previous 2022 6cyl. So my first was the 6 Cyl, liked it, but it def needed more power for sure, esp if you are a car enthusiast! Got the 8 Cyl and it is a def improvement! My wife has the 2024 Range Rover, and she loves it, but when she had to drive my car few days, she felt that defender (8 cyl) is a lot more fun to drive then hers! The kids enjoyed it a lot more as well! It is fun yet feels very safe, strong like a tank feeling ! Super comfortable for a Jeepy kind of SUV! The comfort in my opinion is way better than the Mercedes G Wagon, it even drives better! I’m sure it’s not as fast as the Mercedes, so here comes the Defender Octa! Hopefully I’ll see you all next year with that review! Cheers!

There is so much to like about this vehicle that it seems somewhat unfair that a single, seeming small, feature can have such a profound impact on the utility of the vehicle. The back seats do not lay down flat. This makes the cargo space odd sized and smaller that it appears, but far more importantly, everything placed in this sloping space slides back to the cargo door such that when the door is opened it falls out. It is absolutely irksome and lowers my rating by more than a single star and makes it unlikely I would ever again buy this vehicle that I otherwise love.

It is definitely different from other manufacturers. Still getting used to the high technology. Worked out the software updates issues and low battery messages. Otherwise, very pleased.

The Land Rover Defender possesses a wonderful blend between capability, luxury, performance, and practicality. It rides quite smooth for what it is, although not as smooth as our Range Rover does. The technology even 3 years later is impressive and Land Rover continues to update the software to keep it in line with the latest models. The safety technology is very impressive. Our model has all of the options in terms of safety, but the newest Land Rover products have all of the safety technology as standard equipment. The car itself is extremely safe and I feel very confident driving it. Some people say that the Land Rover Defender is extremely unreliable. However, we have had very few issues with our model, and none of them were major, even after 40,000 miles. We plan to keep our Defender for at least another 2 years and are so happy with this vehicle.
