Hyundai Sonata Hybrid redefines Luxury
Hyundai Sonata Hybrid We were owners of 2 Hyundai Elantras and have had zero problems with them and so when the 8 year old got totaled in a crash we decided to go Hybrid for our next car. We had hoped to wait 2 years and go Hybrid with a small SUV but none out there getting the MPG’s yet. So we went shopping. Honda Accord Hybrid had the best MPG’s but no trunk—really no trunk so if you want it exclusively for around town—well even then why buy it—go electric. The same was true with the Ford Fusion. Both companies sacrifice trunk space to fit the battery in and render the car impossible for long family trips. Bigger Hybrid cars had $$$ and were not dealing. We wanted to look at Hyundai’s cousin the Kia Optima Hybrid but they were selling fast and not discounting. So we settled on the Toyota Camry Hybrid and the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. Both companies got into a bidding war for our bucks and this was a boost for us. We got steep discounts and thanks to Edmonds and Consumer Reports we knew the real starting point. Edmunds makes it great because the dealerships knew the price you got and thus took off from there. What surprised us with both car companies was that the price continued to drop! Both cars are a nice drive and because we wanted all the latest safety features we were hitting the top of the line Limited Editions for both cars. Thus both came fully loaded. The Sonata had a quieter ride, faster pickup, a huge trunk, and both rear seats fold down for added space. Both were equal in safety features but Sonata added the little things like a door handle light that comes on as you approach the car. The interior was way more luxurious with leather along the side doors as well! We also got lucky this year as Hyundai gets to make Genesis their Lexus/Infiniti Luxury car company, Thus Sonata now becomes the top of the line car and is decked out that way. Simply put you get a whole lot more car for your money. My friend who drives a Lexus found my Sonata Hybrid a quieter ride! My other friend could not get the sound system on his BMW 3 series unless he went up to the BMW5! My 1,000 mile review. The 8 way and 6 way power front seats are the best I’ve ever sat in and they are both cooled and heated! Driver's side has memory for 2 drivers! The headrest fits us both perfectly and this rarely happens. We are in love with the memory seats. The driver seat settings are set for us both and switch at the push of a button adjusting not only the seat but the mirrors! Oh, and the mirrors on both sides dip down slightly when you put it in reverse so you can see the lines in the road! Just too many features to name here but what you get IS more than the competition. Two things I must note. The side mirrors are the absolute best in any sedan. I can see 2 lanes –either side and of course it comes with the blinder yellow caution lights in the mirrors on both sides. Rear view mirror is also amazing in that it gives you a near complete view with the smallest blind side and auto darkening at night is very cool. The footprint and ride of this car is amazing but there is very little that we notice going from electric engine to gas—smooth and the regenerative breaks are hardly noticeable too! Turning radios is one of the best in class. Finally by the numbers—at 1,000 miles we surpass easily the 38 city—getting 40+ most trips, combined is slightly higher too at 43 and highway runs 46-48. The center dash screen is huge and does so much I have yet to get thru it all but the smaller screen for the driver—centered above the steering wheel can tell you how you are doing in ECO mode and this gentle reminder really helps. BUT—stomp on the gas of the Sonata Hybrid to go and it takes off because Hyundai did something real cool by joining the electric with the gas engine—having both run to give you a huge boost in horses without eating up a lot of gas! Nice. We are now at over 55K and the only issues were all updated and fixed with Hyundai updates and corrections and all free of charge. My wife and I still love this car. We love the luxury of it and riving it and the fact that we get so much car for a great price. AND--in this day and age we fly under the radar as people do not look at the car as see a luxury model even though my friends who drive BMW's and Lexus find the drive and feel of this car as good and most of the time better than their own! I wish--this time of year--the steering wheel was heated! The spacious trunk is so appreciated along with the back seats folding forward. Our friends with the Honda Accord Hybrid constantly complain about space as their trunk is so small. We can take a trip with friends and fit their luggage and ours in the back. Our friends cannot find the room for a simple trip of 2 without throwing stuff in the back seat! The car still looks near new, rides so nice on all surfaces, and gets city 38-42 and highway 47-52 at 72 mph! We did put on new Michelin tires for hybrid cars at 49K and it made for a much better ride. It did not improve the mpg as much but made stopping so much better as these tires grip the road better than the cheap tires that came with the car and will last a lot longer. We also added blue link which is way cool and allows us to do so much more on trips by interacting with our phone we can go anywhere and do most things quickly by locating the place via the phone and blue link. Six years old next month and over 65K on the car and she runs like a top. We updated the computer programing via blue link and Hyundai extended the warranty from 100K to 110K and years from 10 to 12! Who does that these days. By doing so we got the computer software updates that made it seem like a 2019 with all the computer stuff, maps, and advanced blue link that goes with it! All for free. The minor problems we have had they have fixed with new parts and at no charge. People still ask what kind of car this is due to the quiet ride and how old it is=looks near new! Only small gripe I have is I wish the passenger windshield blade did not come so far over to the driver's side. A bit of a distraction in the rain.

After One Year Update
Updating review - After almost 19K - my thoughts - Engine/Electric Motor/Transmission work flawlessly together. Seamlessly and efficiently changes modes and the 6 speed transmission is far preferable to a CVT even at the cost of a few MPGs. No droning noisiness. Drive in Eco mode most of the time. When sport mode is on the combined torque and HP turn the car into a pretty nice sport sedan. (The suspension is supposed to tighten in Sports mode but I found it to be a very modest tightening.) Speaking of MPG, averaging 44 MPG over the course of 12 months living in NE USA. All batteries lose efficiency in the winter months but make up for it in the summer. Interior is laid out to easily navigate the controls. Seats are excellent with good thigh support. One fail is the Halogen headlights in the SE edition. Low beams do not produce enough light. All cars at this point should have LED headlights standard. (I installed aftermarket LEDs and they work flawlessly.) After one year I think I made the right decision going with the Sonata Hybrid. I expect my next car will be fully electric. And at this point I would choose a Hyundai.

I used to love this car.
I purchased this car in October 2017 and as of early March 2018, I have put about 3,200 miles on the vehicle. I purchased the car to be my daily commuter, but still large enough to carry the family around (2 kids and spouse) when we didn't want to take out our family SUV. I loved this car for the first three months I owned it. The fuel economy is great - I am getting about 42 mpg combined driving 80% highway in a mountainous location. The car is very comfortable and fits my family of 4 comfortably. I am able to fit our big double stroller in the trunk, which was a must for my new car. The infotainment center is intuitive and easy to use. The climate control panel is also simple and easy to use. Over the six months that I have owned the car, it has had to be returned to the shop 4 times. The first time was the day after I bought car and all four tires went flat and the dealer didn't remove some of the wrapping tape that was around the car when it shipped. Then in January, three months after purchase, it was very cold and I loaded up my two kids and the car wouldn't start. I got the car jumped and drove it around for about 30 minutes. Once I turned the off when I got home the car once again bricked. I had to get the car towed to the dealership and they told me it was an issue with the battery. So they replaced the battery and things worked well for about a while. In February, I was contacted about a factory recall. The dealership told me that it would take less than 1 hour to complete, so I took a long lunch break. The repair ended up taking 4 hours and I was forced to take leave for my job due to their miscommunication. The inhibitor switch was replaced, but to this day I have not been able to track down the recall on this part of the car. In late February I was driving home around 10pm and all of the lights on the car - the headlights, dome lights, dash lights started flashing and strobing very intensely. The flashing was so intense the car is pretty much unable to be driven at night. I took the car to the dealership, which was an ordeal in itself, where they told me that the hybrid drive on the vehicle had gone out. It was explained to me that this piece acts like the alternator in a hybrid, but again I can't find any information online about this part. They are still waiting for the part to be delivered, but it looks like the car will be in the shop for at least 1 week. While I hope this resolves the problem, I have low expectations. I have contacted Hyundai USA HQ, but the case manager has not reached out to me yet. I am hoping they offer to buy the car back. I need a reliable vehicle and I purchased this car due to the supposed reliability of Hyundais. I have never been so disappointed and wish I could go back in time and not buy this car.

A nice hybrid I would buy again
I love my Sonata. I was a bit skeptical at first but it has held up really well. Very low maintenance cost and good cost savings. When on highway I get 47-49 mpg. In city I get around 38 mpg. Overall, the average is about 42-46 mpg for an average driving style depending on the weather and where I drive. I always drive in eco mode and haven't felt the need to switch to other modes. I have regularly driven up Mount hood, Helens and a few other hilly areas near Portland and still drive in eco mode without any issues. Love this vehicle! I would definitely buy this again given a chance. Fuel economy and gas emissions are one of my primary decision parameters and this vehicle does decently well in these two parameters. Based on my experience with Sonata Hybrid I wouldn't buy the regular fuel cars ever again. Only electric or high economy hybrid.

Saved my family's life
First...The automatic braking on our Sonata limited saved my wife and daughters life. I'm addition they were surrounded by timely and appropriate airbags. I loved driving this car. Switching drive modes gave a varying impressive and new experience. The technology was user friendly and Android auto was flawless. More bang for your buck and classy. Thanks again.

Overall a good car with a couple of surprises
If you live in a cold climate, i.e. 4 seasons, you should be aware of the drastic drop in mpg during winter months is possible. Dropped from 40-41 combined mpg to around 28 mpg during the winter months. The other issue is a poor performing cruise control in rolling hills. This is surprising as none of my other vehicles have had trouble with this small hills. Car slows up to 12 mph below set speed, then feels like I pushed the pedal to the floor after cresting these hills. The speed will go up to around 10mph over the set speed. Very eratic and can't be good for the overall health of the car. This is not mountains, just some hills. The Limited has so many comfort features that the car is a joy to ride in on flat roads. Unfortunately I have to pass through the 4 miles of hilly area twice each day for my commute. Hyundai really needs to look into the coding for the cruise control to make this a 5 star car. *update* Cold month fuel economy still way low. Warmer temp fuel economy has dropped a bit as the car ages. Cruise on rolling hills still not working very well (just don't use it on hills much)

Pray your battery doesn’t fail
On September 3 I brought my car in for an acceleration issue. It was determined the hybrid battery was failing. It is now October 7 and my vehicle is still in the shop because apparently there are no batteries available. They can’t even tell me when one will be available. Unless you want to own a $10,000 paper weight don’t buy this car b
Best Car I've ever owned
I bought the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid GLS which in Canada is just below the top of the line model. It had everything I wanted leather seats, panoramic sun roof and blind spot monitoring. After one year of driving I have had no problems. I don't have a lead foot and leave it in economy mode and over a year of winter and summer driving have averaged 5 litres/ 100 KM which is about 49 MPG (US). I am getting Toyota Prius like economy with all the comfort safety and convenience of a luxury car. Compared to the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord Hybrids, I like the styling and visibility better. I also found the competition lower to the ground and therefore harder to get in and out of and considerably more expensive. The warranty is also better. Resale value is not as good, but I don't intend to sell it for a long time. After 3 years + still very satisfied. This car along with lots of other Hyundais is subject of a recall (R0180) in Canada involving the engine crankshaft. Probably not good news. There was a problem in the assembling at the factory and not all vehicles will be affected. A software update has been installed to detect the problem. If an engine warning appears, take it to the dealer immediately. The good side is the waranty on the engine has been extended to 200,000 KM or about 125,000 miles. The standard waranty in Canada is 60,000 KM much less than in the USA. I still plan to keep this car along time. Very comfortable, very quiet, and the gas mileage is exceptional ! Now have 62,000km and have no engine problems. The anti-sway bar links in the rear suspension and the front suspension ball joints were all replaced, thankfully under warranty. Quite a bit early for that to happen I would think. However I live in the country and although I am a careful driver I can't avoid all the ruts and pot holes. The anti-sway bar link problem was detected because I complained of a rattling sound at the back going over washboard. The new anti-sway bars corrected that, but I am now getting another interior or exterior rattle under the same conditions. Still like the car very much and intend to keep it a long time. The gas mileage is still exempletory. The rattle turned out to be the driver's seat cushion rubbing on the plastic molding on the left side of the seat. Solved by jamming (out of sight) some grey foam pipe insullation between the two ! Still love the car and plan to keep it until I may switch to pure electric.

Almost everything you could want
Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Limited has almost everything you could want. Things missing that could really dress it up include heated steering wheel, auto sensor wipers, and keys that remember the vehicle settings specific to the key user. But honestly, these aren't deal killers, quite obviously since I bought the car. It's a great car in regards to other luxury features and the mileage is the crown jewel. Love that mileage!!

Scary!
I thought this would be a good choice for many reasons. The gas mileage and for the environment. Plus I like Hyundai cars as I’ve owned an Elantra that lasted forever and they have a great warranty, but the hybrid to me is scary. First there is no room for a spare tire which makes me feel uneasy and the battery doesn’t charge while sitting in traffic so I had an issue with that not switching over to gas at the time. The car is so quiet you don’t even know if it’s on half the time. The check engine light keeps going on but they can’t figure out why. So I’m done with the hybrid of any kind. I still like Hyundai but no hybrids for me.
2017 Sonata Hybrid 147,000 Miles
I bought the car new in 2017. I currently have 147,000 miles on the car. Great car. Factory tires replaced at 72K. 2nd set replaced at 140k. Changed oil every 10K using Mobile full synthetic oil. Hyundia did injection cleaning service, full body throttle service and changed spark plugs at 140K. Headlight bulbs will go out at 60k consistency. Car got 40-42 mpg up to 140K miles. After 140K and service, mpg has slowly dropped to 32-37 mpg. Is this a sign that my hybrid battery is getting weak? Is there a way to test the hybrid battery or is it just going to die? At what point would Hyundia replace the Hybrid battery?

Loved it at first
Ok the negative. First got the car it was hydroplaning and sliding all over until the tires broke in. A couple of times I had it tell me the key not recognized and not start and had to remote start it with blue link. The blue link remote start is useless on a hybrid because if you try and heat the car it runs the gas engine for 15 seconds then 5 min of electric then the remote start times out and shuts the car off after 10 min. So you have to remote start it a 2nd time. And a 3rd time. Same with the AC. The AC doesn’t start blowing cold for the first mins of your drive. After 6 months I had check hybrid system come on the display while driving. It went away. 1 time the auto headlights didn’t turn off when I exited the car and needed a jump start. Took the roadside assistance 4 hours to come. Then last night after almost 11 months I stopped at a store and came out and car would do system check then say check hybrid system and not start. Called for a tow. After an hour tried the car again. This time it started. But check engine light is on. Turned it off again. Waited another half hour for tow because didn’t want to cause further damage. Started the car again to drive to dealership myself because tow was taking too long and everything seemed normal so I called to cancel the tow and the tow provider told me that they had already cancelled it with Hyundai because they didn’t have any trucks available. So I called Hyundai and told them I’m all set. An hour later I get a text that my truck is on the way. Called them to cancel. At this point it’s 11pm. Got a call at midnight 1am and 2am telling me my service should have arrived at this point and to press 1 if it has and 2 if it hasn’t. Car is going into dealership on Monday to check out the issue but I might drive it to the Subaru dealership after for a legacy. I don’t want an unreliable $34,000 car

Love after 3 years
This car has really been great. I haven't had any repair issues. I haven't even been to the dealership once since I purchased it. Regular oil changes are all I've had to do. The mileage has performed very well. I'm at 40.4 mpg after 30K miles. I think that's great. It does get better mileage in the warm weather than in the winter. Comfort and Technology are all great.

3rd Sonata Hybrid Ltd
I call Sonata the Asian Benz. Drove European sedans for 30 years-mostly Mercedes. But was hooked on Sonata with their major redesign in 2011. Have been with Hyundai ever since and in my 3rd Sonata Hybrid Ltd. i give this car 5/5 stars as it is essentially flawless and performs exactly as stated. Averages 42-43mpg city and highway loaded with every available option. These cars are pretty much bullet proof and carry an amazing warranty. 1-30-2022. All I can say is ditto the above. 8-1-2022. Still love the Sonata no problems

Only one complaint so far
I think the heater is a bit gutless. The mornings here in southern Cal. have gotten cold. While the warmed seat is nice, the amount of heat put out by the engine seems minute. I think it has to do with engine temperature never really reaching higher temp levels. But I do like the car. At this time, I only have <600 miles on it.

2017 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid
This is a good car that gets good gas mileage and has a lot of techy features. It is comfortable to drive. Most features are easy to use after reading the User's Manual. The User's Manual is comprehensive but very repetitive.
Luv our 2017 Sonata Hybrid Limited
We traded in a 2013 Hyundai sonata Hybrid which we had since 2014. It was a Basic level so did not have sunroof, backup camera, or any safety features. Shopped around for various Hyundais, mainly Limited series Sonata or Ioniqs and would up with a white 2017 Sonata Hybrid Limited. It rides fine and has all or most of the safety and convenience bells and whistles. Since we live in a rural area, we got the initial oil/filter change at a general-purpose auto service place near us. As far as I can tell all is well and we are very happy. Due to living in a rural area, we have put on about 6000 miles since purchase in early June.

Fantastic over all gas mileage for PHEV
Purchased new 46,527 miles mostly city driving my lifetime gas mileage is 108 mpg. Using gas for engine heat in illinois. I can go months in warm weather with no gas use. This been evey bit the car that I ecpected it to be. Replaced battery and tires (original are horrible).

4½ years later and I still love it
I have spent zero dollars on repairs and I get 600 miles to the tank.
2nd Sonata Hybrid-and this our LAST
We have enjoyed the fuel efficiency of both of our Sonata Hybrid (2011 & 2017). However, the 2017 Hybrid has had repeated issues with the small inverter radiator for the hybrid system. We have now replaced it two times and the dealership claims punctures have occurred in the radiator due to rocks/pebbles on the road. The first replacement occurred 5 months after the purchase and it was not covered by warranty. We never had these issues with the 2011 Sonata. We feel this a design flaw. The dealership claims the manufacturer will not warranty the replacement.

Not worth the money
I bought a Hyundai Sonota hybrid new off the lot in 2017. I have owned this car for 5.5 years and have put 115000 on it. I have owned several new cars and this one has been the worst. I spent an extra $10000 so I could get the great gas mileage that you should get with a hybrid. The first 2 years I got between 45 and 50 mpg. Now I am lucky if I get 30. I constantly fight with Hyundai because something is always wrong. From all my warning lights going off as I am driving down the road. To it not started when I stop to get gas, or the trunk not opening. All this started after the first year. All Hyundai ever says is we don’t know unless you bring it in. Once I bring it in. Oh we haven’t ever had that problem. But yet there was a recall on the part. Never again will I buy another Hyundai.

More than what I bargained for
I came home off the road in May of 2019 to purchase a car and Town East Ford suckered me into buying my 2017 Hyundai sonata hybrid which they did not inform me was previously a Hertz rental car under 30th day they blew my phone up not to bring this car back just showed me that that 10,000 plan would cover anything bumper to bumper to this day I'm paying out of pocket on towing I'm getting repairs done and being stuck out wherever it stops with no reimbursements come in my way that I see even after submitting the receipts the Uber trip alone to my attorney costed me $150 one way that day cuz I couldn't find anyone to take me cuz my car crapped out I will never buy another Hyundai hybrid it does not suggested by me I've already had the motor rebuilt it is now what August of 2021 and it had a rebuilt motor and even as I check the oil now it is greedy after being replaced so no but I buy another Hyundai sonata hell no the newer ones have more security features to where you can't do things like open your door and look out at the side of it as you're backing up cuz it won't let you it gets worse as the years get newer in my opinion hell no I never buy another one again
Still lovin it all these years
I love the gas mileage I get especially with the price of gasoline. I like the way it rides, the way it looks, it’s a sporty look car when compared to let’s say a Prius. I’m still under 21,000 miles, I traveled a lot for work but I’ve retired. I’ll be driving more often vs. letting it sit in a parking lot.

Great fuel economy, but terrible engine issues
Things I love about this car: I bought the limited edition, so the interior of the car is really nice. It has cream leather seating and wooden looking trim on the doors. The fuel economy is great. I average 40 miles per gallon on the highway and about 33 miles per gallon City driving. I love all the features the car has like smart cruise control, heated seats, moonroof, and the ability to save two drivers seat position for the drivers seat. However, mechanically this car has a lot of issues. I have already had two engine replacements due to the connected rod bearing failure recall. Both engine Replacements were thankfully covered under warranty, but it's kind of ridiculous that in 100,000 miles I had two engines replaced. The first time that my engine was replaced was during covid and it occurred when there were part shortages across the country, so it took the dealership 2 months to repair the vehicle. For the first two weeks of my car being at the mechanic, I did not have a rental vehicle because they were trying to decide if it was going to be covered under warranty or not, since this occurred a couple weeks prior to it being announced as a recall. Therefore, during that time, I did not have a car at all. Then, I have to get my engine replaced after only about 40,000 miles on the second engine before the connected rod bearing failed again. Again, that engine replacement was covered under warranty and they gave me a rental vehicle right away and any future engine replacements for the connected rod bearing failure will also be covered under warranty. However, if this is a known issue in the vehicle, Hyundai should fix it, so people don't have to keep having their engines replaced. Because it adds undue stress and takes time to have to go to the mechanic multiple times for the same issue. There was a class action lawsuit for the connected rod bearing failure, but all I got out of it was $75. Fast forward to 5 months after my engine was replaced, the mechanical water pump failed. The dealership was trying to quote me almost $2000 to replace that. I ended up getting it replaced at a different mechanic, but it still cost about $1600 to fix the water pump, since the part alone was over $1000. The part is also a dealer only part, so I was forced to buy it through Hyundai. Additionally, I explained to the Hyundai dealership that it is not right that they had me pay for the water pump replacement, since my car was in the shop just a few months prior for an engine replacement. In order to take out the engine, they also have to take out the water pump. So they installed a faulty water pump back into my car. However, they refused to pay for the repairs just because at the time they returned my vehicle, the check engine light was not on. I attempted to communicate with Hyundai corporate to have them cover the repairs or make the dealership cover the repairs for me, since I already had my engine replaced twice and just a few months after the second time, the water pump failed. However, corporate refused to help in any way. My car is just barely out of warranty. It is nice to have the 100,000 mile warranty when purchasing a new Hyundai, but expect the car to have many issues after the 100,000 mile warranty is up and expect Hyundai corporate to not care to help you with the repairs, even after two engine replacements. Additionally, these service was a Hyundai corporate was horrible. I was hung up on multiple times when trying to explain my situation to a service representative with Hyundai. They didn't care to hear about the issues that I was having and hung up on me multiple times. And this is after being on hold for over a half an hour just to speak with someone.

2018 Sonata Hybrid Limited
I have owned this car since brand new. I bought this in April 2019. It was sitting at the dealer for a whole so I got a good deal. I have kept it the maintenance and I always service at my local Hyundai dealership. I do frequent oil changes on this car and everything is smooth and I still get almost 40mpg, even now. I sometime do my own oil changes and do a engine oil flush and then add brand new high quality synthetic engine oil. And I also add fuel conditioner (fuel injector cleaner) to keep things clean with fuel system and hopefully back of the valves which is very hard in a direct fuel injected engine. I am hoping to keep this car for a long time.

NOT a reliable car
I loved this car, until a month after buying it when it broke down. A “check hybrid system” alert came up and I could no longer drive it. 3 trips to my Hyundai dealership and still no clear answer on what’s wrong, even after involving “higher ups.” This is a very common issue and most people spend thousands of dollars before giving up on the car. Each “fix” is temporary and just when you think everything is okay, it breaks down again. I would not recommend it at all.
