Should be better

james carlson, 09/09/2015
2014 Ford Focus S 4dr Sedan (2.0L 4cyl 5M)

This car mostly delivers as expected. It has great gas mileage, up to 40 mpg hwy, and decent power from the 2.0L 4 cyl. The ride is quiet, but rough. Visibility is poor, as this car sits very low to the ground, and has obstructive A pillars blocking the view to the sides at intersections. Rear seat is unsuitable for long rides. The trouble areas are the quirky My Touch entertainment/navigation system, and the faulty 6 speed automatic transmissions (expect a recall). If Ford would just fix a few things, it would be a really good small car.

Fun car, but unreliable

I love the size, handling, styling and interior. At 35,000 miles it needs a new clutch pack and strut bearing. The dealership has been nice about it, but this is ridiculous. At 45,000 miles the clutch was rattling and hesitating. It was replaced again at 50,000 miles and at 65,000 is back to hesitating.

GREAT car, best I've owned

I bought this car brand new in Dec 2013 and I've put 92k on it as of Dec 2016. I have not had a single reliability issue with it. I've changed the oil when it notifies me (~ every 10k) and kept up on the scheduled maintenance. The only true repair had been a leaking gasket, which was covered under the ext warranty. I am beyond impressed with this car, solidly built and a pleasure to drive. The MyFord Touch screen and technology is great and easy to use, never had an issue. I have snow tires that I put on in the winter and it makes a world of difference in snow (highly recommend this). Love the hatchback for storage. I couldn't recommend this car enough. Best car I've owned.

DCT is not your regular Automatic Transmission

That being said, Ford and its dealer network should do a lot more to explain to future owners what DCT is. The regular swish-style gearbox is simple in that one bears down on the throttle to go fast and eases to slow. DCT requires one to drive with a manual gearbox mentality. To quickly get to 4th or 5th, stay below 2500 rpm and then once on 4th or 5th one can push beyond 3000rpm to get some speed - I suspect that's when the turbo kicks in. I've found 6th works best in the range between 2200 and 2600rpm. To accelerate, use manual mode but at 160hp from turbo, I dont think this is the horse for that race. update as of 11/2016: upgraded to the focus st - essentially the same car but with more power and a tad worse fuel economy. same comforts as the regular focus, but is easier to live with compared to a wrx. got a 6 year dealer/manufacturer warranty so not worried about ford quality. never had any issues with the regular focus, and none so far with the st.

Great Little Car,

People are all complaining about the transmission issue that these cars are having. Yes, I understand that's a problem but Ford is well aware and working on taking care of it. My review isn't based on the transmission alone (which I did have to have my clutch replaced) but I am not going to complain if Ford is willing to extend the warranty and keep my car running until they come up with a fix. Overall, amazing little car. I have always wanted one of the new focus sedans and was able to find mine at a dealership pretty decently priced. Fuel economy is amazing, handling is excellent, it's sharp looking and the performance is not like other 4 cylinder vehicles. I think Ford has designed an excellent little car.

If I could have one car never built again this would be it

I wouldn't take the time out for this if it wasn't for the fact that everyone should know about how horrifying not only this car is but Ford for even letting this happen. The car has a recall on the transmission it stalls when driving and can even randomly shut off while driving. Ford wont even give you a rental tell they check what is wrong. even when it is under warranty and has a recall so they already know I am not at fault for this cars problems. Writing this while still waiting for a estimated time on how long tell they can even look at it.

Reliable and Fun to Drive

I bought this car in August of 2014 from the dealer and drove it off the lot with 10 miles on it. I now have around 39,400 miles in 26 months. I also have the 5 speed manual transmission. The only issues I have had with the car were replacing a tail light bulb and then 2 tires because of nails. It is peppy for a small car and has more horsepower than the other cars in its class, (which is something I looked for). On interstates going the speed of traffic on open highways I average 35.5 mpg. On 2 lane highways with a lower speed limit I have averaged between 39 and 44 mpg of 200 mile round trips. It handles well in all types of weather. The AC cools off the car quickly in the hot days of summer. The bluetooth syncs easily with my phone, however I have had to resync it once. The legroom is the back is a little poor but it is a small car. The resale value of the car is poor because of issues with automatic transmission however but the manual transmission editions are reliable and fun to drive. I would easily consider buying one with a manual transmission again.

FOCUS is TRASH

Fed up With Ford, 08/27/2019

Dont listen to my obvious rant , just google Ford Focus (2012-2014 Transmission) and enjoy, Ford should be ashamed of how they are trating thier loyal consumers by putting out an obviously broken product and refusing to own up or fix it. Won't ever own another Ford.

Bought a 2014 Focus - need I say more. Clutch had to be replaced 3x within first yr and a half. Salesman knew dam well what he was selling. My warranty has expired on this used piece of crap. Can't afford another car right now. WILL NEVER BUY FORD AGAIN.

I hated this car because of its transmission issues. I traded it in for a 2016 Focus in September, 7 months after I purchased the 2014, I was told that the 2016 did not have the same transmission. I lost money on the trade-in because Ford had just issued a recall on the cars but Ford would not replace the transmission unless you broke down. I have had the 2016 for two years and I love it. Great pick up, features and comfort. I wish I had just purchased the new one from the beginning. Just got rid of the 2016 Focus. Starting to feel that it was hesitating which shouldn’t happen. Day after I sold it, I received a recall notice. Piece of junk. Bought a Kia.
