Engine trouble within a month of inspection
Feels and works great until the shoddy craftmanship creeps up on you. A few days ago my Ford Escape started having issues just after starting and stopping the vehicle. It made sounds like gears were slipping, groaning, and creaking. Since it was fine otherwise, I didn't think to bring it into a shop. Yesterday after work the car started to make a loud clunk when starting to move and erratic sounds of scraping / metal banging around. I checked numerous times under the car to see if anything was loose and dragging and couldn't see anything. These issues only seem to occur when the car is in low gear(?) and travelling less than 30 or so MPH. I haven't had time to fully diagnose the issue, so I'm not sure if it is transmission related (most likely) or gasket related. I read online that this model series has fairly consistent issues with the transmission and the gaskets, and that Ford will not address the issues unless they occur under the warranty (which typically expires around 10,000 to 20,000 miles before transmission issues are typically reported, even in well-maintained vehicles.) or conduct a recall to fix typically failing parts. I had been driving a 2008 Ford Focus for years and never had a problem with it, so I was more than happy to get this vehicle. However, if the repair turns out to be costly only one and a half months after buying this Ford Escape, I will make sure to never purchase another vehicle from Ford again, used OR new.

Gas eater
Car is comfortable, handles well and picks up speed. Consumes gas like there is no tomorrow. 17 miles per gallon. Fortunately, it is 87 gasoline. Not a whole lot of cargo space. Gets rusty fairly quickly, which requires replacement of undercarriage skid. Pulling up the hood is difficult, the latch does not open wright away. All in all regular American car, the further you go, the higher the risk something will break away... Buy Japanese, do not fool around
