Know that this vehicle is better than the "professional" reviewers give it credit for. Incredible room up front. Very easy for this large Colorado, hat wearing cowboy, to get in and out of. My wife and I have no children at home so we are not concerned about back seat layout so I will not comment on that. Controls are intuitive, easy to use. Setting up my wife's apple and my android phone was a snap. The car comes with it's own hotspot which is really nice in Colorado where we often had no cell reception while driving. Though we repeatedly saw that mileage on the highway would be at best 30mpg out real life experience, so far, is 36mpg. We live very rural and so do little to no "city" driving. Was not looking to buy a new SUV when we found this but could not refuse the deal Buick offered. Our good fortune. It is NOT underpowered. The EncoreGX gets the job done! If you are in the market for a new small SUV, look at the EncoreGX. Ours is in "preferred" trim 4wd, and truly cannot see why I would spend the extra to go up a model. This has everything that we could want. Update: I have now had this vehicle for 10 months. The 4wd has worked well for this winter. Handling has been excellent I did replace the all seasons with snow tires. The hot spot was ok but did not work as well as I initially thought so did not pay for the subscription and let it lapse. The paint seems to chip easier than I think it should so I now have a bottle of touch up to use so that it does not become a problem. Would still rate this 4.5 stars. Would recommend and would buy again in the same situation. Update: Have now had for 1 year. Still love it. Now I see a reason for the upgrade and wish I had, as by now the extra money spent would seem inconsequential. I have the cloth seats, white. Would be much easier to keep clean if they were leather. I miss that it does not have the adaptive cruise control that keeps you spaced from the car ahead. I would still recommend to anyone wanting a small SUV. By the way, up here at 8,000 plus feet it gets over 40 mpg. I know it would not do that down at near sea level but is a nice thing anyway. 22000 miles now, year and a half in. Would still buy again, would recommend to a friend. Thought about upgrading to a 2023, however the Buick does not hold its value like my Subarus do so cancelled that idea. Update: Have now had for 38000 miles. No problems. As it has a turbo engine I change oil every 5000 miles to make sure the turbo charger is always running on clean oil. Has worked so far. If interest rates become reasonable again I will trade in for a new one. Would stick with the GX as I really like the way it handles in these mountain snows and I find it very comfortable to drive. Update: Still running strong. 34,000 miles plus. No major problems. Still like this vehicle a lot. Highly recommend. My model has the 6 year transmission with awd capability. Cannot speak to the 2wd models with the CVTs.

To Me It's Best Sub Compact SUV For The Price

Zolman, 12/08/2020
2021 Buick Encore GX Essence 4dr SUV AWD (1.3L 3cyl Turbo 9A)

I've test driven all the sub compact SUV under $50,000. The Encore GX didn't have the raw power of some of the other brands BUT it had all I needed plus much better gas mileage. We just got done with a 650 mile road trip and averaged 38MPG. That's much better than the rating and all we did was drive speed limit. It's got enough power to merge into traffic and pass slow traffic on two lane roads. The interior is great and with all the refinements of the premium brands in its class. Granted it doesn't have real leather or 24 speakers, but I don't need that. What I really liked is the moon and combined sun roof, camera system and the safety features. No other SUV in it's class came close. And some of the pro evaluator's said there was cabin road noise ??? I listen to the radio when I drive.

So I am not an automotive aficionado, I am an average middle-class consumer. I have read reports of “sloppy steering”, awkward displays, etc., and I have experienced none of that. It’s a great looking little SUV that you can park almost anywhere. I have the 1.3 liter turbo and it’s a lot peppier than my previous Encore’s 1.4L engine. For the price, I just don’t know how you can beat it. I would buy it again without hesitation.

This car is NOT slow (with 1.3L)

Purchased a 2021 Encore GX Essence and it is a fantastic car. Let’s address the elephant in the room first; SO many reviews of this car are positive until they get to the engine and then it all falls apart with comments pertaining to it being very slow and loud. Mine is FWD and most reviews are with AWD which may be part of the problem. My experience with the 1.3L has been instantaneous power with no turbo lag and quite quite. Mine includes the Advanced Tech Pkg Experience Buick Pkg, Convenience Pkg and is quite a vehicle that definitely feels a class above. It is higher in price but with this amount of tech (self parking anyone?), the quiet interior, very smooth ride and sharp styling I encourage anyone considering this car, and even those not considering it to drive it. You should be impressed. So no one is confused, the “Model” section below does not include an Essence FWD 1.3L forcing me to select the AWD option.

I am in love with this car! It feels so zippy around town with the turbo 1.3. Power is adequate on the highway, but it definitely wont win any races. The interior feels more premium than other subcompact crossovers. The backseat has adequate space. The technology is where this car really shines! The lane keep assist is great, and so is the infotainment system. The only thing that would make this car better is if it had a bigger engine. Overall, I am in love with my Encore GX Select!

Had my Encore GX for about 6month now and put 5K miles on it already. All the professional car critics say this car is under power. Its was never meant to be a speed demon, which I did not need anyway. But far as acceleration and keeping up with the traffic, in highway speed it has no problem. I think it fits in perfect between a Boring Honda / Nissan and expensive Lexus or Accra. It has perfect size and all the feature I wanted and needed.

Nearly Perfect Small Crossover

ZZTOP, 01/16/2021

My wife and I tested quite a few crossovers before settling on the Buick Encore GX. Here is how I would order them based on my personal preferences: 1) Buick Encore GX 2) Chevy Trailblazer 3) Ford Escape 4) Ford Edge 5) Toyota RAV4 (big surprise because it’s the best-selling crossover in Canada) 6) GMC Terrain 7) Jeep Cherokee (dead last, this car was super sluggish and didn’t feel agile at all) My wife and I knew immediately after driving the Encore GX and Trailblazer that we were going to choose one of them. We might have contemplated the Ford Escape if it were a bit cheaper, mainly because it has the horsepower we’re used too, but it was slightly out of our budget (because we didn’t like the bottom trim). The biggest drawback of the Encore GX: Not enough horsepower when you’re on the highway. For city driving the torque is more than sufficient. The Encore GX is comfortable and fun to drive, it looks classy yet sporty, and is a perfect size for a couple living in the city.

Buick unresponsive to 2021 Encore GX Issue

We have owned this vehicle for 12 weeks and have not had the use of it for 3 weeks, going into the 4th. The car is at the dealership for the 4th time on the same issue. This time the dealership found a pinhole leak in the exhaust system which caused an other part to fail 3 times but Buick does not have any parts to fix the issue and they are not responding to the dealership. I would have thought Buick would have been stockpiling parts to fix this issue since we are 8 months into 2021. Since we purchased the vehicle we have not had the use of it 25%, going on 33% of the time.

Really liking our new Encore GX, Preferred, 1.2 FWD. Have had it about a month and have about 2,000 miles on it so far... lots of metro area driving and one road trip. I'm very satisfied with the quiet and comfort of the car. The smooth acceleration of the 1.2L and CVT is pleasing and unobtrusive. Its just the right height to ease entry for my 88 year old mother in law. The price (with incentives) makes this Buick Encore GX a real value! MSRP was $26,145 for my Preferred trim plus the Cold Weather package (Heated, power seats, remote start) and with all the discounts at the time, my final price was $19,240. So, shop around; don't just compare msrp for the cars you are considering. Ease of purchase at my particular dealer was top drawer, too. Recommend! 17,500 mile update: all continues well. I’m very satisfied with MPG, getting 30-32 every tank. We haven’t had much snow yet the winter (Minnesota) but it’s been handling well thus far. (Little thing, Big Plus over the regular Encore: you can lift the wiper blades up so they stick out while you scrape the windshield…can’t do that with the old Encore). I am also happy with the heating system (mine is the basic, manual) it’s almost set and forget, and quiet! Still happy. Still would recommend. 32,000 mile update… steady as she goes! No complaints. Still solid, no rattles. MPG continues 30-32/tank. I like the two-tiered floor in the trunk. You can take off the cargo cover and put under the floor when carrying items taller than the cover, like my mother in law's walker. Very happy with this purchase. 45,000 update... Still happy. No problems to report. MPG holding a 30-32. Its been handling this recent 2023 Minneapolis snow storm as well as can be expected for a FWD car. Glad it has a higher ground clearance than a regular sedan! Heated seats and remote start are good friends!

Brake System Failure

Concerned Momma, 06/12/2021
2021 Buick Encore GX Select 4dr SUV AWD (1.3L 3cyl Turbo 9A)

I love(d) my brand new 2021 Buick Encore GX ST with the 1.3 turbo. I was beyond surprised by the performance and effortless speed capability. I went from a 5.3 engine to a 1.3 and was very pleasantly surprised! It is way roomier than it appears and has lots of unexpected features. Unfortunately, it also had a brake system failure before I ever even made my first payment! I’ve had it for less than 3 weeks, and with only 672 miles on it, the brakes went out on me. Fortunately, I had just came to a stop when it happened. Numerous lights came on - engine, ABS, Brakes, etc, and a message appeared on my screen that read, “Brake System Failure, 62 MPH Top Speed.” When I tested my brakes by pressing the brake pedal, there was NO brakes at all at first, then, as the pedal neared the floorboard, the manual brakes engaged and I could stop the vehicle with significant difficulty. The local Buick dealer checked the codes and they indicated that I needed a new master cylinder. Upon research, I found that certain 2021 Buick Encore GX’s had a recall for a faulty brake system, BUT, according to my VIN number, mine was not included in that recall. What I experienced with my Encore was an exact match to the description given of the potential consequences of brake system failure in the recalled vehicles. As fun as it is to drive, be safe! Give your self plenty of stopping room and do not tailgate!

Small however I'm 6'3 and it still has plenty of room for me to drive it being comfortable. I have the highest trim level on my car and it was definitely worth paying more for it.. It's definitely a great looking small size SUV Buick definitely never disappoints. Great on gas I can go 3 weeks on a full tank.!! I bought it new and now it's just over a year old and I can see this SUV lasting for a long time. It might be small however it's a solid and most definitely a reliable vehicle.. Has had only one recall and that was for the emergency jack nothing mechanical.!! Runs great, drivers great and again it's awesome on gas... I would definitely recommend this vehicle to anyone looking to buy a great vehicle..............!!

We bought this for a nice work/good car for my wife. We love it, got the red accents on black looks really sharp. And as far as the interior or power being an issue. I drive a 2012 raptor and she switched from a Yukon. It's as nice as interior in truck and way "quicker" than the Yukon. As I said we love it. Light beige interior is still a question although it looks like a nice purse..

The Encore GX was my first vehicle purchase. The tech (Apple CarPlay) is amazing for listening to music and navigation. The big screen with carplay and backup camera is very sleek and stylish. Put about 1000 miles on her and she drives like a charm. At 23 years old, I never thought I’d buy a Buick! This car is sleek and sporty. Looks like a luxury car. Only downfall is the auto stop which can get a little annoying. Could speed up a little quicker too. Overall, great safety features and smooth drive.

The Encore GX had me at Hello!

My Encore GX Select with the CVT actually has the 1.3L turbo (not 1.2). As far as power goes, the 1.3 does a great job with the CVT at delivering the power needed to get around town. I also have no issues whatsoever with getting on the highway or passing cars. With this engine/transmission combo, sometimes half throttle is all you need (around 4k RPM) to merge or pass. The CVT is a newer, chain-driven design and not one of those god-awful Jatco CVTs. Don't let the fact that the FWD GXs have CVTs scare you. Steering and handling is good. The safety tech works acceptably well. Mine has the ST Appearance Package. I wish Buick would have called it something else since I think Ford when I see ST badging on a car. Regardless, the package makes the car look sportier and stylish, especially with my car's black paint. The interior is a step above mainstream subcompact crossovers. To me, it felt very inviting. While the front seats are smaller than average, my power driver seat offers plenty of adjustment. The backseats are decent, too. I though it was neat that below the front seats, the floor drops off a little bit, offering a little more foot room to any rear passengers. While this car can get pricey in the upper trims, which I've seen auto reviewers gripe about, getting a mid-trim Select with a few added options can keep the price below $30k. My added options were the ST package, 1.3L engine, Black paint (GM charges for any paint other than Summit White), and the rear power liftgate. If you don't need all the bells and whistles, this is a happy medium. To close, this is actually my second 21 Encore GX. I had originally bought one previously, but with getting a wild hair, I traded it for a 21 Subaru Crosstrek 2.0 Premium. When driving to the dealership to pick it up, I started having misgivings about going through with it, but I forced myself to go along. Eventually, after buying it and having it for a few months, I ended up with buyer's remorse. It wasn't a bad car, but I couldn't fall in love with the Subie. I ended up trading the Crosstrek in for a used 21 GX like the one I had previously except my current one is now Black instead of blue. When I drove away from the dealership that night in the GX, I had a smile on my face and was very happy knowing I made the right decision. If you still think the GX is a bit expensive but still interesting, then you can always consider its cousin, the Chevy Trailblazer.

I bought a Encore GX Essence August 21st and by September 1st it sounded like the engine was going to fall out and all kinds of error messages popped up. After 6 weeks at 2 different dealers found out they had forgot to put a ring in one of the cylinders. They were unable to get the ring or a head gasket to fix it, so they are now installing a new engine. This Buick is the poster child for the Lemon Law.

I own a 2018 Encore which is alright, and was given a 2021 Encore GX as a loaner vehicle when I took mine in for service. This car is pretty snazzy. It is definitely more zippy and quite a bit smoother in accelerating than my Encore. However, it is also a little louder inside and the three cylinder engine causes the cabin to shake a little bit more. I absolutely would not purchase this vehicle brand new, and more than likely I would look at something else unless I could get a super rocking deal like I did on my Encore. Driver tech, safety, and reliability are all pretty good selling points, but again I would not buy one new.

I purchased a GX Select with the 1.3 and CVT Transmission which I would highly recommend. It phas excellent power and I'm averaging 32 MPG overall. On the highway you'll get 35 MPG. It is quite, rides smooth, handles great and excellent brakes. The three cylinder engine does sound different at low speeds and it is not as smooth a some cars but once you get up to speed its fine.

I like the car over all. The rearview camera is not all that is sort of confusing. Then head up display is very neat. What I think the car needed most without all the packages are sunroof, head up display, electric tailgate lift, and the moonroof .All the other stuff is almost a waste of money.

Fun little suv! Great for running around town or picking up a few items from a big box store. One minor issue-fingerprints quickly mar the plastic on the entertainment center screen.

I study 3 cars and settle for the Encore GX Select loved everything study it for at least 3 days bought it had more specs that what I had read 14 miles. After not even 3 weeks pass the 300 miles engine light came on. After 3 months of back and forth well I told them don't want it; it's a lemon. Once that light is on you lose a lot of features. Had to do all again got the same one 2021 and once again after 300 miles engine light is on, here I go again 3 strikes and it's another lemon. So I do not recommend this car at all. What are the odds of having the same problem. They say the got it this time but after 5 engine light and so many trips to the dealer well I am not gonna think it will be fix and after 10 days light be on again. I just got this 2021 for 2/18/2021 light went on 2/24/2021 still at the dealer being "fix".

I rented this and was thinking about buying one. Good thing I did. It drives nice, but the seats are very uncomfortable. I thought Buicks were known for comfort. Also, they charge $1,500 for on star, which is standard.

I have purchased this vehicle and I am not at all satisfied with it . I bought it back in April 2021. I had to bring it back to get a small hole in roof fixed about 1 mth later after backseat passenger noticed it . Few weeks ago get a recall on the jack . Then in September my engine light is on saying something about the emission control system. So as we speak dealership has my suv and I am in a rental car.

Have read ‘professional ‘ reviews about the 2021 gx and disagree with some of them… the car is extremely quiet in the interior , has very comfortable acceleration, and handled direct with the steering and ride is very comfortable around corners … I have the essence trim and we love the car … I have test driven other highly rated subcompacts and the gx is far away the most comfortable and much more smooth and quiet… test drive it and you will find it fun to drive ..

Picked the car as it could be flat towed behind my motorhome. Is an easy set up. Car is peppy enough in 1.3l engine, I was worried about a 3 cyl, but it's good. Roomy, has lots of features even in base version, was inexpensive with rebates and dealer discount. A bit rough on bumpy roads buy acceptable. It's often the first car to pick to drive, but wish it had power sests and more seat comfort. Avg mileage at about 22.5 around town and 30 hwy. Voice entertainment a bit confusing but use the android auto which is working OK. Great value, love the size, mileage, and it can be towed. Like style a bit better than the chevy version, and you got more for the money. Terrible brakes. Squeal. Had brakes replace w ceramic, solved squeel. Jumps when parking brake is released. Buick does not care about the poor brakes.

Fitsy

I previously owned a 2014 Encore and it was a great little car. A little sluggy but nonetheless a great, safe little car and was exceptional to handle on snowy Michigan roads. When it came time to upgrade there was no question I would be looking at a newer Encore mostly for its winter driving performance and fuel economy. Well…my 2021 Encore GX XT is way too fitsy. I shut off the auto correct because it was a struggle to drive correctly. You have to manually engage the AWD which is fine but I question if it even makes a difference. I’ve driven on snowy roads for 20 plus years and have never felt as little in control as I do with this car. I bounced off a curb going 10 MPH last winter. The car would not let me correct, almost like the steering locked up or something. Just this past week when taking off from a stop sign the car’s ass end decided to twerk and it took quite a bit of correcting to get it to cooperate. I’m so frustrated that I’m seriously contemplating getting something different that is safer to drive in the winter. I love the looks of the car and want to love it but.,,,,,

The 2021 GX Essence model is a great ride. I don't agree with Edmunds review that the cabin is noises. The only potential issue is seat size. It is not suitable for a large man. I get 28 mpg city, the dash panel is very intuitive and the Essence model has a turbo charged engine and 9 speed transmission, loaded with features too!

After my own problems and reading about others, I wouldn't suggest buying another car made in Korea… Since I’ve bought it, I’ve had it in the shop for more than a couple of months out of the three I’ve had it for the same issues. Driving it down the road, it’ll suddenly lose, gain or sporadic up and down power where it can either accelerate on it’s on or slowdown. It makes it nearly impossible to drive and get it to safety and keeps throwing codes about TCM’s and Speed Sensors, etc…

I should have known I was making a mistake BUT.... the opening into the car.is a little difficult for older people, the car is just a little too snug in width, vision is not adequate from rear, the cargo space is too small. The car is pretty but I was consumed with NEW car. My fault for not being a wise shopper!

Great small SUV. My GX has ALL the latest high tec. options. Only 4800 miles at thi point. Love the heads up display and all the other features.. Ride could be a little more soft. Gets very good MPG:. 32 mpg.. Only fault I have found is that the car seems to drift. Buick could have put a better line of tires on the car. My wife loves this car also!

Got my AWD. 1.3 liter for 15 months and drove 14000 km so far surprisingly the engine has a good power because of the 9 speed transmission. Cons: noisy engine when you push it, front seat cushions are uncomfortable on a long drive, cold air comes to my face when putting heater at half heating when driving (probably need trap adjusted) and looking closer to my instrumentation I noticed the gear shift indicator is dark red and invisible on daytime. I rate this model higher than the competition. I knew it’s build in South Korea. But didn’t know it’s at Daewoo assembly plant.

As with my previous Encore, I especially appreciate the back support system and the great handling and sharp turns this car offers. I am able to switch from all wheel drive to two wheel drive - the savings in gas mileage is noticeable. This car has great pick-up, smooth riding and comfortable. A pleasure to drive. I like the solid sound when closing the door. Also the push button start and off. The automatic open and close of the trunk - great convenience. So many luxurious features for a subcompact SUV. Not surprised being a Buick. I used to be a Park Ave. person ~ now am an Encore fan. I’ve only had the car for a week and so far have not found anything I don’t like. Am continually pleasantly surprised by its very many, very nice features.

For starters I’ve owned many fast & luxury type cars. Porsche, Amg, BMW, Corvettes, Benz etc. I bought an Encore GX Select, it’s quiet with an excellent ride and surprisingly peppy for its 1.3 turbo. It has a Cadillac style interior similar to the XT6. Honestly Buick did a great job with this car. If you’re looking for something comfortable, amazingly peppy with a smooth and quiet ride definitely buy one! Don’t listen to the “professional” ratings, they’ve gotten it wrong!!

The car looks really nice! We were excited to get something this nice at 21 years old, but our excitement died off. We have a 2021 Encore GC 1.3t AWD. We are the second owners after buying the car with a clean Carfax record. We had an oil leak come up 6 months after owning it. The Buick dealership replaced what they thought was a leaking/warped oil pan THREE times. Flash forward to now, the car has been in the shop 6 time in 4 months, for upwards up 8 weeks to tear down and reseal the whole engine from top to bottom. The dealership claimed to have help from a GM engineer, but that didn’t seem to make a difference. I’ve had the car for four days, and I’m returning it back to the shop for rattling, grinding, and whining noises today. At this point, we’d love it if GM would buy the car back so we could go back to our not-so luxurious cars. The only good thing is that everything is under warranty, but we just wish we wouldn’t be paying for our car to sit in the shop.

This car is the most sensitive junk I've ever owned and I've owned a lot of cars. There are so many little things that can and do go wrong. There is an emissions "evac pump" that has been broken for several months now - the dealership says it's fine to drive it like that but, my auto start doesn't work as a result. If you have to take evasive maneuvers in this car be prepared to pull over and reset everything. The power steering sensor will go off and sometimes the traction control goes off. So, I have to pull over - turn off the car then turn it back on. Also they took my tire jack when I bought the car - said it was a recall - I just called today (2 years later) to see if the jack has come in or if the repair part is there. Nope - I would never in my life buy a GM or Buick vehicle after this experience. Toyota, why did I ever leave or doubt you?!!
