Used 1998 Audi A4 2.8 quattro 4dr Sedan AWD Consumer Reviews
Stay Away!
Bought this car in '98, thought I was buying the ultimate car. All the seals leaked, problems with exhaust. Tie rods went, radiator developed a leak, as well as water pump. Wheel bearings went in two wheels, all with less than 50 K miles in 5 years! Noise in rear of car that two car dealers could not find, then told that rear suspension needed replacing. Traded in for a Honda, very happy now, but experience with Audi, who did not compensate me for my expenses and agony, was miserable. Audi is a four letter word to me now. Don't buy an Audi.
Fun to drive, expensive to repair
I loved the road handling and the way 80 mph felt like 35 mph. -Quattro will take off some low end grunt from a stand still. The styling is very slick and the interior very comfortable. However, I found the car to require frequent, expensive service.

AutoA428 / Hi Maintenance
would not recommend due to very high maintanenace costs - 1st gear of Manual transmission is going / replaced catalytic converter /was leaking oil fixed and a year later is leaking again.
good but not great
the 1998 Audi A4 is a great driver's car and has nice styling, but its not really a performance car compared to my BMW. The AWD system is awesome, the car handles well, rides smoothly, and has tons of cool features for the money. My mileage was a little less than I expected, 23 MPG highway / 19 MPG, city but not horrible. I have had issues that the (GM) dealer took care of when I purchased the car (oil leaks, control arms, and tie rods). Do not take your car to the dealer for repairs. Get a good mechanic that knows these cars.
Don't Do It
I loved driving this car. After a while, things started going wrong. Swing arms, tie rods, wheel bearings, speed sensors... this car cost me thousands over 4 years - just to keep it on the road!! Quattro is amazing and this car is extremely fun to drive. Beware, though, because it will cost you a fortune in the long run. I will never buy Audi (or European for that matter) again. Audi has destroyed my faith in "German engineering" - or lack thereof.
