TURIN, Italy — The 2014 Alfa Romeo 4C lapped the Nurburgring in 8 minutes and 4 seconds, Alfa Romeo confirmed on Friday.

The automaker said the Alfa Romeo 4C is the fastest car with less than 250 horsepower to lap the Nordschleife.

The record run happened on September 12 and had been leaked in earlier media reports.

The test of the Alfa Romeo 4C adds yet another element to the hype surrounding the brand's delayed return to the U.S. market. The 4C is set to spearhead that move, with an anticipated U.S. debut next year.

Behind the wheel during the record-breaking run was Horst von Saurma, a journalist and driver. The vehicle was equipped with Pirelli "AR" P Zero Trofeo tires that were developed for the car.

"The 'Green Hell' proved to be the ideal place to put the performance features of the Alfa Romeo 4C to the test," said the automaker in a statement.

Edmunds says: The only thing slow about the Alfa Romeo 4C is its U.S. launch.
