Worst car I've ever owned
We bought this car originally because of its safety and reliability ratings. I still feel safe in it, but it's been one headache after another: little things at first, but then a $1,400 A/C repair at 45,000 miles, numerous electrical system issues, and today, at 91,000 miles, I'm told a rod in the engine has been thrown. Unreal...this in a car that was meticulously maintained. I'd never by another Volvo.
Great Value
Excellent value, bought privately two years ago, holding value very well....some dealers can really hose you, had real RIP-OFF experience with one, absolutely excellent with another. Any problems are well known, easily fixed, and non-recurring, Eg: ABS/TRACs light on is simple $45 electrical ignition switch fix, air pump should be $200 fix IF dealer replaces air check valve. Basic parts are available over internet from ipd and others at 30- 60% off of Volvo Dealer prices. Currently 120K miles, feels strong and smooth.

Volvo For Life
Volvo got it right when they built the 1996 volvo 850 turbo platium edition. Comfort, reliability, safety and passenger experience are all awesome. The engine is so good that Volvo is putting it in its new 2008 C30--rock-solid engineering. Don't know why Volvo didn't put the T-5 (with 218 horses) in the S80 or why didn't they put the R S-60 engine in the S80. All I know is when Volvo built the 850 Turbo they built a legend. The 1996 850 R are still selling for a lot of money.
I love it
The best car that i'we ever driven. lots of power. Great performance, great handeling. Go for an 850 R.
Enjoying my 850 Turbo-starting to worry
I bought my car 1 year old from the dealer. I had all scheduled maint. done at the dealer. I have been very happy with reliability for the past 5 years. It now has 73K miles and I am having to do some major maint. that is very expensive. New engine mounts (known to go bad), new struts, shocks, brake rotors, radiator, dented rim. Roads are rough around Dallas and I drive it hard, it just seems like a major overhaul. I was going to trade it but decided to do the repairs and hope to keep it for another two years/25K mi.
