A true classic
I bought one with 100k in jan '06 and it still drives like a baby i compared it to a 02 impala (3.8 engine) with the same mileage and the ride was much smoother. it sits better on the road better pickup a true classic.
What a lemon!!
Bought as a second car to drive to work. Had only 87K miles. It turned out to be a real money pit and I traded the Volvo on a new Honda Civic. Overall, I liked the performance, the ride, and the feel of the car but had one problem after another. Bought used from Hoy Fox Volvo, El Paso, TX. Terrible service department, had to have several repairs done more than once before they were fixed. They kept telling me that it was an old car and I should expect some repairs. I know that but they had the car on several occasions to fix the same problems again and again. I asked them, "you're the Volvo dealer, if you can't fix it then who can?"

Still a Steal, great car
I have loved my 850 Turbo. This is our 4th Volvo and they just get better. Safe, quick, and easy to haul your family and their goods. Thinks to look for if you are buying a used 850: 1) Timing Belt changed at required interval 2) Make certain AC system blows cold. The evaporator is expensive to repair. 3) No "Check Engine Light" or "Abs" light 4) Make sure the brake rotors are free from warps, causing the steering wheel to shudder 5) Have a Volvo dealer do a pre- purchase inspection. If the car has not been abused, you can expect great quality and reliability from a used Volvo, even with high miles. Nonetheless, expect annual maintenance/repair to average $700-$1000.
safe, reliable, and fun, but pricy
I bought this car used three years ago and thoroughly love driving it... until I have to pay for the service bill. The car is not too fast off the line and there is noticeable turbo lag on acceleration, but it has serious high-end power. Going 40-90mph...er it is fast. It also handles wonderfully in the snow and rain. I live in Michigan and it cruises right past all of those massive 4wd SUVs in the ditch. Even as aggressively as I drive, highway gas mileage is 30-32. (20-22 in the city). Maintenance is fairly simple, but parts are a little on the pricy side. I've had to do only standard stuff (brakes, shocks, wipers, etc.) and it costs 10% more than the same work on a more common car.
Great car for the money
Bought this car as second owner for my mom who was 74. Had two minor little problems but has been a real gem. Just keep ahead of the maintenance.
