Used 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan Consumer Reviews
Horrible to arrive- but cheap and cute
Car has had acceleration issues from Delivery. Not in a “engine too small for vehicle weight” but in a way that felt like there was a delay in gas delivery/combustion or even a disconnect with shifting. It’s scary as heck trying to pull into traffic, not knowing if your car won’t continue driving. Even though the car is cute and comfortable, and has lots of options at a decent price, none of that makes up for horrific flaw in the performance. The worst part is that VW KNOWS this is an issue and refuses to do anything since the diagnostic computer doesn’t see an issue. Update April 2020: this car still sucks to drive. The acceleration lag is so prevalent it’s unreal. I’ve had it in to VW three times for the issue, and each time I get a different pine of BS. “Use better gas” “dont hit the gas pedal so hard” “it’s the turbo” It’s none of the above. Again, the worst part is having the service manager acknowledge it’s a driving issue yet it’s not fixable therefore VW doesn’t care and isn’t doing anything about it. This car is the absolute worst car I’ve owned in 35 years of driving. Update May2022: VW replaced some computer chip and that “fixed” the acceleration disconnect about 90% of the time. Randomly the transmission will shift erratically and the car jerks, usually happens at slow speeds. Tons of other minor problems that the dealership ignores until the 4th or 5th time i bring it in. The only reason i still have it is because of how difficult it is to buy a new car with all the manufacturing delays. Still would not recommend this car.

Love the car, but thank goodness for the warranty
Purchased my 2019 VW Tiguan SEL R-Line AWD in February of 2019. Within the first week, half of the buttons on my steering wheel were not lighting up, took it back to the dealership and they replaced them. I am over 2.5 years in with 47,000 miles, and two months ago, I had to have the wiring harness replaced because the power windows quit working. I was told that this wiring harness also controlled the climate control so they were surprised I hadn't had any problems with that. Today, I realized that when I lock the car, the doors aren't actually locking. I have loved the car but I do not love the repeated trips to the dealership. Thank goodness for the bumper to bumper warranty (that has since been shortened). UPDATE: After posting this review in November of 2021, I had the passenger wiring harness go out (the first one was the driver side) and they told me I was not the only one to have this issue when I drove to the dealership. I traded in this vehicle 2 months after I wrote my original review and I have not missed the car at all.

Competent
I really wanted the VW Alltrack wagon, but when I brought my family into the dealership they all walked over the to Tiguan, and that was that. We bought a Tiquan SEL Premium last December and now has 2K miles. Highs include a fantastic interior and very good visibility. The driver assistance package is excellent, a relative value, and much smoother at keeping the car between the lanes than the system on my 2018 BMW. Lows are over-matched engine that struggles to reach speed and makes a racket doing so. Interior space is very good, about the same as our 2016 Tourag. Oddly, this particular car got a little jiggly over 85mph, especially the (empty) front passenger seat. I lived in Germany for 5 years and have seen enough little VW Golf's bombing around the Autobahn at 130 plus mph to know this not right and I trust fixable by the dealer when it needs service. We love the car. Out the door price was 36K.

19 Tiguan SEL-R-Line Black vs 19 Rav 4 Adventure
I own both cars from brand new. Gave the wife my Rav 4 as her Civic lease was up and she wanted back into an SUV. I ended up with the Tiguan after 8 hours of car shopping. Both cars had an MSRP of around $37,000. In short, the Rav 4 is an over all better car. Here is everything better on the Rav 4 for the same price point: Stock Sound System is way better( to the point where i am going aftermarket on the VW, its that bad), Seats are more comfortable, Rav 4 comes with Lane Assist, Rav 4 comes with LED headlights(REALLY VW? NO LED's on a $37,000 SUV in 2019???), Rav 4 has better power, Rav 4 gets better MPG's and resale value of the Rav 4 is going to be wayyyyy better, Rav 4 has Off Road features/settings. Cons: No navigation system at $37,000, the clock always reset to 24 hour format(some bug?), not as good of warranty as VW, First gear is to aggressive and jerky Pros of the Tiguan: This is subjective but the styling of the Tiguan SEL R-Line is slightly better than the Rav 4 Adventure Trim, The Tiguan feels roomier. Navigation included(really Toyota? no navigation on a $37000 SUV in 2019??), While the Tiguan lacks a bit in power, it has a 2.0 Turbo which means companies like APR and BMS(JB4) for those in the know, will have a tune for it , greatly increasing horsepower and torque, Panoramic Sun Roof, 6 year/ 72,000 mile warranty Cons: Resale not as good, current lack of power, seat comfort, stock radio is terrible, no LED head lights, lack of lane assist, not as good MPGs(though only have 1100 miles) Both cars are still fun to drive and come with plenty of features but both could do better at the states MSRP price points 2021 Update- We traded in the 19 Rav 4 Adventure for a 21 Rav 4 XSE Hybrid. We owed $25,500 on the Rav 4 and we got $27,000 on the trade in. In comparison...the 19 Tiguan SEL R-line Jet Black trade in value is $22,000 TOPS with less miles on it than the Rav 4 had. This is why you buy a Toyota people. VW's resale is terrible. I also got a tune from MTM Tuning to increase TQ/Hp. It barely made a difference. Tuners are having trouble squeezing power of this disaster of an engine because the turbo is so small. This engine belongs in a Jetta, not a 3900LB SUV. MPG's are terrible. I mange to get around 20/21. The 19 Rav 4 Adventure was getting 26.5mpg. Thank got the Tiguan is a lease. I can't wait to give it back and get back into a Rav 4 in 2022.
