2017 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid
My last review of our 2017 Hyundai "Ioniq" gas-electric hybrid was one year ago. Since then, we've added another 14,000 miles of mixed "city errand" and multiple long-distance trip travel. This car continues to deliver virtually PERFECT performance, with a consistent average of between 55 and 65 miles per gallon -- whether city or country/interstate driving -- with NO issues at all. … Dealer service is friendly and thorough, enhancing confidence in Hyundai's good customer support. We did opt for addition of a mini-spare tire in the trunk (instead of relying on call-in highway support visit in case of a flat, and no spare in the trunk), but have never had a tire failure on long travel with second set of tires -- this time Goodyear radials, or any other issues. Car is a comfortable road machine for the driver and front seat passenger and can deliver a 500-mile interstate day on cruise control at 70 mph, with 100 miles left to spare on one tank of fuel, and no aches and pains for my 5-foot 7-inch frame. Pandora over an iPhone and blue-toothed to the car's sound system provides 'free' selection of music and news while on the highway, so there's no need for the pricey XM radio option that came with the vehicle. The 8-way adjustable seat for driver, with variable lumbar support provides any needed comfort ajustments. All the 'little things' crafted by Hyundai into this design -- from adjustable side mirrors; to heated front seats in winter; to the non-intimidating instrument panel; the comfort of the suspension and solid steering; rear and side traffic alerts; good braking; roomy and adjustable interior (fold-down rear seats make a larger cargo area, if needed); etc. make this vehicle Hyundai's true "hidden secret" among their broad stable of steeds. The industry-leading extended B-to-B warranty on the car and its lifetime battery coverage (no parts or labor cost!) make confident ownership a no-brainer. We have researched and considered the new Ioniq 6 all-electric vehicle, but WE WILL NOT BUY THAT, OR ANY ALL-ELECTRIC CAR. Hyundai made a colossal error in canceling production of the Ioniq gas-electric hybrid model we own! They should do more research on advanced IC engines like 4- or 6-cylinder horizontally-opposed turbo diesels with twin crankshafts, linked to this VERY successful computer-managed electric/mechanical drive system that's been SO successful in our Ioniq. A drivetrain like that would likely yield mileages between 80-100 MPG....and be TRULY a winner automobile.
