42K and still a big fan

2014 Honda Accord Hybrid
Last month I passed 40k miles with my Accord Touring Hybrid, and I remain an enthusiastic owner. Lifetime average mpg is ~50Mpg. I typically get 52-53mpg per tankful in the three warm seasons with short trips (under five miles) at about 44mpg and long trips (my commute is 25 or 53 miles, depending) coming in between 55 and 60. Winter mileage is 47-48mpg due to fuel mix and low … temperatures. Warm winter days I get above 50, but on bitter cold days it can be as low as 39mpg. My driving method for this car is special, and I think it contributes to mpg success. Accelerate just quickly enough to run the motor and drive in hybrid mode. Use electric mode for flat and downhill. If there is a small hill ahead, allow the car to slow a but in EV mode as you go over the hill and ease back up to speed thereafter. On long uphill drives with speed limit at 45 or higher, try to go fast enough to drive in engine only mode. In all conditions, avoid cracked or crumbly road surfaces. Smooth road is key to mpg success (rain pulls down mpg as well). Mechanically, I have had zero issues. Oil lasts about 11k between changes, and after 42k miles, my break pads are at 70%. This is in part because I drive in "B" mode at all times when not using the adaptive cruise control. Initial breaking always is by taking my foot off of the accelerator. I almost always hit the break only after my speed declines to about 20 through regenerative breaking. The leather interior and all controls have held up like new. The ACC works great and uses regenerative breaking for most deceleration needs. I love the right blindside camera and especially like to use it while going over long narrow bridges. I have seen some say that there should be a left blindside camera, but I find the split left mirror to be fine for that purpose. There are only a couple negatives. The forward collision sensor can trigger on bends in the road if there is a tree, garbage can, or other object on the side of the road (but straight ahead before you hit the bend). The ACC only sees a car as being ahead of you once it is completely in your lane. New Jersey has aggressive drivers, and so I have to hit the breaks when being cut off, because the camera does not see a car half in my lane as an obstacle to slow down for. In my experience, the positives out weigh the negatives hands down. Compared to my 2008 Accord V6 LE, I have saved about $1700 in fuel (at about $2 per gallon). Having my breaks last about twice as long will be another financial benefit, once I pass 100k and need to change them. I would buy this car again.
