2015 Chrysler 200
The Chrysler 200 was a step above its competition, especially at this price point. It’s smooth, stylish, elegant and well-engineered from every aspect inside and out. My impression is that it is quiet, efficient, very powerful and a genuine joy to drive. Being frugal, I drive my vehicles for a long time before replacing them and bought one immediately after a test drive. I encourage … anyone considering a luxurious, fuel-efficient classy sedan to simply drive one before passing judgement based on the oddly conflicting reviews (some rave about aspects that others claim to be abysmal) I’ve read or seen here and other places after buying mine. As for my perspective, I’m a 50 something professional and most of my family and friends are in the same socio-economic circle. Myself, family and friends all own, drive or at least ride in sedans & SUVs ranging from Cadillacs, Mercedes, Buicks and Chryslers, to Fords, Chevys, Dodges, Subarus, Kias and Hondas. Some are brand loyal to a fault and I don’t begrudge that, despite the many issues they’ve all experienced privately but don’t speak of openly and certainly don’t write on-line. Serious issues including catastrophic transmission, engine, suspension and electrical failures with Cadillacs, BMWs, Hondas, Mercedes, Subarus and Toyotas. I’ve read criticisms of the 200 ranging from poor quality manufacturing (panel gaps? I’ve seen far worse in Hondas and Toyotas) and materials, to tight, uncomfortable interior (mine is as comfortable as a friend’s Avalon (I'm 5'10", 220)), to a ride so stiff you'll hurt your back and even a claim of dangerous handling characteristics. Regarding the ride and handling, the chassis is Alpha Romeo derived and the Italians know how to make cars handle and ride well. This car feels good on the interstate and bombing backroads. My fuel economy averages 27.5 mpg in the mixed driving I do, but I do have a fairly heavy foot which isn't the cars fault. Has everything been perfect? No, my oil cooler cracked and leaked during an oil change, but that was fixed under warranty. I replaced the OEM Bridgestone tires with General Altimax which seem better in every way to me. My biggest disappointment is that this car, along with most other domestic sedans is cancelled. I felt it was too good to go and looked forward to what came next. Unfortunately, we Americans have chosen to buy just SUVs and trucks again, making anything else financially illogical to sell here, so sedans are mostly gone. I'd hoped we learned our lesson from the last gas crisis in the late 2000's, but here we are again. What a shame. It looks like I really will be keeping this one for the long run now, there's nothing on the market that I could replace it with or would want to.
