2023 Chevrolet Colorado
I purchased my 2023 ZR2 as part of a conscious decision to spend more time outdoors doing outdoor stuff - whether it was trips out innawoods to go camping or just chucking a bunch of surf rods in the bed to haul out what I can from the Gulf of Mexico. Coming from a long string of sports cars and hot hatchbacks, the change was stark, but not without its benefits.
For starters, the … third-generation Colorado, even in the most off-road oriented ZR2 spec is supremely comfortable and capable as a daily driver. The cabin is quiet, spacious and sensibly laid out, with lots of adjustment in the seats and wheel to help you get comfortable. I do wish the seats had a bit more bolstering, but even without, they're all-day comfortable and the base ZR2's cloth and 'Evotex' materials wear well. Infotainment is something of a highlight, with an Android-based system and big screens that offer easy navigation and tons of functionality. I do wish that Chevy provided a bit more secondary storage beyond the giant center console cavity and glovebox though - the skimpy door pockets are fine, but only just that.
Performance across the board and especially in rough going is outstanding. The L3B TurboMax and 8-speed automatic combo delivers a ton of torque and there's plenty of passing power that belies the ZR2's two and a half tons. It's not fast, but it's definitely not slow either. When the terrain gets less asphalty, the robust standard hardware (front and rear electronically controlled lockers, 33" tires, drive modes, front clearance and approach angles, etc) mean you have the tools to solve a lot of problems without leaving the driver's seat. Steering is accurate if a bit overboosted and the brakes are flat out phenomenal for this class of vehicle. I do wish that the engine/exhaust was a bit more vocal, but also don't hate the very turbo-forward soundtrack that makes the truck sound like nothing so much as a very huffy diesel without the diesel clatter.
On top of all this, the current Colorado (particularly in Trail Boss and ZR2 trims) is just a great-looking truck, with sharp, chunky styling and a nicely squared bulldog stance. Most people wouldn't give a black pickup a second glance, but I still get regular positive comments and questions about my truck.
The Trail Boss is probably the smart money purchase for discerning buyers, but I have zero regrets about buying my ZR2. Mileage could be better, as my example basically returns 17 MPG regardless of duty cycle, but I was well aware that a big truck with big turbo power was probably not going to set any records on that front.
The midsize pickup segment is pretty hot right now, with every offering either being recently redesigned or refreshed - I'm not sure there's a bad choice out there now, but I can say that the Colorado ZR2 is definitely a good one. Highly recommended.
