Big Problems
I'm very displeased with the quality of this vehicle. I had numerous small problems that required several trips to the dealership, plus at only 60K, the AC compressor needs to be replaced (not covered by the warrenty). That and the fact that it is extremely underpowered, very noisy on the highway, and the back seats are very difficult to take in and out. It is very good on gas, rides and handles great in the city and has ample cargo room.
*BEWARE*
Loved this car at first, started getting a lot of wind noise, and noise from rear, had it looked at, but found nothing. Now, with only 120,000 miles on it, it started slipping. Had it checked and transmission is gone, of course it's past warranty, plus the ECM (engine control module) would also need to be replaced, costing me $4,800.00.

2002 RAV4 5spd
Bought new in 2002. 5spd Stick, original clutch still going strong at 100000+... oil changed regularly, front brakes once, tires once, wiper blades, a couple of light bulbs... THAT's IT! Terrific little wagon!!! Best vehicle I've ever owned. Check Engine Light came on after about a year, reprogramming of the module was done at no cost and has never come on since! I'd definitely buy another!!!
First Birthday
My silver Auto 2WD 2002 RAV4 is celebrating its first birthday next week with 19K miles. About 3 weeks after I purchased this SUV, it developed the infamous rattle in the dash. I've had it to the dealer twice, but it was never fixed. I was told to turn up the radio. After about six months, the rattle had become less annoying (perhaps I'm getting used to turning up the radio) and intermittent - seems to be worse in the cooler weather, but disappears when its hot or when the heater is on in the winter. Other than this annoyance, I'm happy with the RAV4.
Carlos's Toy
I have owed my 2002 Rav4 for 5 months now and driven it 9,000 miles. On back roads it does great, takes the curves like a little sports car. I get 24 miles per gallon. Good ride. Does great on the highway except when you go up prolonged uphill grades, the car wants to kick in and out of passing gear. The major complaint that I have about this vehicle is the passing gear. Do not try to pass someone on a 2 lane road except when you have a lot of time to do it. When you punch the accelerator down into passing gear, you think the car is going to take off like a rocket, but when you pull out into the passing lane the vehicle doesn't go anywhere.
best dollar value in a SUV
Outstanding value.. Terrific reliablity, Gas mileage of 28+MPG. Loads of usable space.
I love my Toyota Rav4!!!
Have only had the Rav for a month now but we LOVE it after a Dodge Caravan. Much better handling and reliability. Smooth handling. 'Sure-footed' on slippery roads. Nice mileage. Lots of room. Love the adjustable front driver's seat. Acceleration on highway might seem slow for a few seconds but suddenly 'you're there' and going at top speed.
2001 RAV4 AWD Automatic
I have gotten 25 mpg consistently with my RAV4 using synthetic motor, transfer case and differential oils. Acceleration is adequate for me. Do not listen to the automotive review writers when they tell you this car is underpowered. I can easily go 90 mph. I love the easily removable rear seats and the large cargo area removing them provides. I don't bump my head when entering. Good storage in the dash for stuff. Antilock brakes work great.
No problems...
I've had this car for a little over 2 months now and am very pleased with it. It's fun to drive, handles well, and gets great gas mileage (for an SUV). Recommended!
Rock and Roll, but Rattles and Shakes
Great design in and out. Handles like a car with the advantage of sitting high. It puts a smile on my face. Great for around town and gas mileage is surprisingly good. I feel the king of the road (no more threatened by the size of monster SUVs). The inside is so roomy and practical yet so small and cute from the outside. Well this is for the Rock and Roll part lets talk about the Rattles and Shakes. Soon the rattling annoying noises crept up from somewhere in the back. The audio unit also buzz. It drives me crazy.I see that Im not the only one complaining about it, so Ill take an appointment with the dealer and raise hell if they do not fix it !
