Used 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Consumer Reviews
Early adopter
I bought the 2nd Hybrid Highlander available in the Houston area. Overall, I have enjoyed owning this car. It is fun to drive. The hybrid system acts like a turbo when I want to stomp on it, but gas mileage goes down to low 20s MPG. When I work at it, I can get low to mid 30s MPG. My hybrid inverter went out recently, but this has a long warranty (8 yr, 100K mi). However, the car had to be towed into the shop. The new HH has an electric vehicle mode that allows short distance driving on battery only, but I doubt if this works without the inverter. I test drove a 2008 model and it is more sluggish due to the added size/weight. I would buy the 2006 model again.
Great choice for me
I love my hybrid. It has the power of a 4 liter V-8, the economy of a smaller car, the reliability of Toyota and can move people and cargo comfortably. I am getting 27 mpg in combined driving. I like to feel the power so I am not always driving for economy. I have the base model and added a navigation system and rear back up camera manufactured by Eclipse. They make the navigation system that is in my Lexus. The HIHY has all of the saftey features that I want in a vehicle. I am enjoying it and will keep it for a long time.

This is the most reliable vehicle I've ever owned
If you want the room, storage and hauling capability of an SUV combined with good gas mileage, this is the vehicle for you. While the average mpg is not better than a more recent vehicle such as a smaller sedan, it's wonderful to know that the hybrid engine makes for cleaner emissions. And I love the quietness of the drive, and the awesome acceleration when you need to pass a vehicle. I have offered to give this Highlander to a daughter who is driving an old Cavalier. It's going to be such a step up for her.

Great SUV
Love my 06 Highlander Hybrid. Bought in 08 with 93k miles for $16K. Now have 125K and all is GREAT. NO problems, no issues great gas mileage 29 mpg around town. When and if the hybrid battery goes out it will be no brainer to purchase a replacement.
Typical Toyota
In a nutshell, this Toyota is like all the others I have owned... bulletproof. It excels in every aspect except for fuel economy, which is still better than non-hybrid models. I get 25.5 mpgs in the summer and 23 mpg in the winter in mountain driving.
