Used 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Consumer Reviews
Great SUV
We have had our Highlander Hybrid for 12.5 years/180,000+ miles and it is still going strong; minimal mechanic charges; just a great all around vehicle for our family.

Sherman tank that gets great gas mileage
Prior to buying this vehicle, I owned a 2002 Honda CR-V and thought that it was the best car ever built. Then I bought my Highlander Hybrid with 26K miles and the it is more rugged and gets better mileage than the smaller Honda. This 06 Highlander Hybrid has it all: Good Looks. Great interior space. Smooth ride with a CVT transmission. Good gas mileage for a powerful SUV I get about 26 MPG overall. While this is less than advertised, it is still very good for a car with 268 HP that is built like a Sherman Tank. I typically keep a car for 200K plus miles and I am confident that this will go way beyond this milestone with basic maintenance.

Disappointing
I was extremelly disappointed with the fuel economy. I got an average of 21 mpg - way below than expected. Granted I used the air conditioning all the time as I live in Fl but I did not push the car hard. A hybrid should have better fuel economy for its price tag.
Disappointed
This car wasn't great. It is one of the first hybrid models out there and we bought this car new and it has about 50K on it now. We've had some pricey problems with it though. At times it won't start and have had many recalls on it for steering! And if you spill even a little bit of water you'll short out all the electronics in the car!!!! That was over $7500!!!! The car does drive pretty nice and does have a lot of power though. And I was in an accident in it and the engine did shift but luckily not onto us. I personally don't think it was that safe. The car is okay but not worth the money.
Love it
I can't speak to reliability, as I have had the car less than a month. However, I've tested in various conditions (not in snow yet), and I love it so far. The ride is comfortable, it's incredibly smooth and quiet (luxurious feel), and the interior space and layout is very user friendly. It gets more than double the gas mileage of my last car (a Ford Explorer), yet is nearly the same size. The visibility is good, and I recommend the navigation system/ computer. The seats are the most comfortable I've ever had in a car--and even the back seats adjust forward and backward. This car also has a third row seat, though I wouldn't use it regularly (it's small.) VERY happy with it.
Heck of a First Car -- Will Post 1yr Review as Well
As the title suggests, this is my first car. Purchased at 43k miles from a dealer. Having driven only my parents' cars until now, those being minivans (Odyssey, Villager) and sedans (Impala), a small SUV is certainly different. That "hybrid" and "luxury features" are not mutually-exclusive (nor do they require a premium nameplate) is a good thing. The "hybrid premium" also shrinks to almost nothing (by Edmunds estimates for similarly-equipped vehicles quoted at dealer retail). 2006 Limited 4x4 loaded minus DVD: $20,923. 2006 Limited 4x4 Hybrid loaded minus DVD: $21,445. That's $523, so one would need to save 125 gallons of gas in mileage vs. nonhybrid. Such savings is easy.
Almost got killed in my hybrid
These hybrid are in the baby stages, there are a lot of serious problems with the hybrid system components, these vehicles are death traps, they can stall on you and shut down without any warning doing 70 mph, no power, no steering, no brakes almost got killed by a semi on the freeway. I'm talking to a lawyer, it's happening to others in other states, they are very expensive to fix, 14,000 dollars that's what my dealer wants to fix, they are nuts a four year old car, needing such expensive repairs, my last hybrid, or Toyota, and yes they say they are warrantied, but a warranty is only good if they will fix it and Toyota won't.
Great Vehicle
My Highlander has over 33000 miles. To get the best mileage, the driver should make maximum use of the cruse control. That allows the computer to control the engine torque and continuous variable transmission (CVT). That way, the computer maximizes the gas efficiency while maintaining the speed that is set. I get 32 MPG driving 60 MPH on up and down highway roads in upstate New York. I couldn't be happier with the mileage.
Not worth the money
Let me start saying I am a Toyota man, always was, always will be. I bought my Highlander Hybrid thinking it would be the best car ever. It's ok, but has a herky jerky ride and the seats are not very comfortable. I took it back to Toyota and their factory rep. said "That's just the way the car is" The car gets pretty good gas milage 24-26, and looks great. In my opinion Toyota needs to make it a lot smoother before I recommend it to anyone else. Sorry Toyota, but sometimes the truth hurts.
Hybrid Rip Off
Bought the hybrid for the great mileage claims which turned out to be a complete lie. Vehicle gets 21-22 mpg from normal driving which in no way justtifies the price premium.
