I wouldn't have considered the Avalon as an outright new car purchase but was pleasantly surprised at ride quality (on par with Volvo S-80) and feel I got a bargain at $17K. There's no way you are going to find one from a dealer for under twenty grand. Toyota reliability and savings to boot... seems trivial to gripe about the bland white color.

My Avalon is a pleasure to drive in particular on long road trips. The response of the car is great as well as the comfort. Excellent gas mileage at approximately 29 mpg on the highway.

My family has had our 2001 Avalon for years and it's still going strong at age 18 with 140k miles! Obviously now an old car, but still solid and reliable.

A Year with my Avalon

I traded a 2000 Camry for my Avalon XLS. I injured my back and found I couldn't ride in the Camry for more than 20 minutes without developing severe back pain. I was forced to do something. I shopped around for a month and looked at and drove many cars. The Volvo S60 2.4 was most like the Avalon and I would have purchased one but the dealer expected sticker which I will not pay. Toyota sold me the Avalon at invoice. I am not that pleased with the light steering feel but I am use to performance cars with big power. I'm 55 years old and grew up driving muscle cars. Overall the Avalon is exceptional in this age.

Comfort of a large luxury sedan with the peformance of a sports sedan. I've driven 43000 miles in 20 months and the reliability and performance have been extraordinary. Routine oil changes, tire rotations, etc.... My next car will also be an Avalon.
