Good Car but Gas Mileage is Off (Updated 2/29/16)

2015 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 4dr SUV AWD (2.5L 4cyl CVT)

Purchased my 2.5i Limited in February, have 4000 miles on the car and my average MPG is only 23.4 MPG overall, with only 26.5 MPG Highway. Very dissapointed in the MPG, was the No. 1 reason I chose the Outback. Brought up the issue with the dealer and was told it should get better after the break-in period which is typically 10-15k miles. Really, it takes a year to break in this car? The 12 speaker Harman Kardon stereo also has disappointing sound quality. And lastly, do not spend $ on the side door moldings, they are supposed to help prevent door dings and I got two dings in the first two weeks, Not worth the $285. Otherwise, the car is comfortable, easy to drive, with plenty of room. <br><br>Update 2/29/16 Now that I have 10,000 miles on the car wanted to give a review update. Gas mileage has not gotten any better, only a little worse. Just took the car on a 2000 mile roadtrip from IN to TX and back and averaged 24 MPG all highway, this is unacceptable. I can not justify driving a 4 cyl vehicle that only gets 24 mpg. My father-in-law's new 6 cyl Highlander gets the same or slightly better mileage. The Outback is fine otherwise, but the dismal gas mileage from the 4cyl is just too much to accept. I will be trading in or selling this vehicle over the next couple months, gas mileage was the number one reason I choose the Outback and its just been terribly disappointing. Update 4/15/16 - Traded the Outback in, and couldn't be happier. I'll give them credit on resale, they do hold their value. I have friends they swear by the Outbacks but I just couldn't get on board with the dismal gas mileage out of a 4 cyl. If you are looking at an Outback, get the 6cyl, you will get the same gas mileage as the 4 but have a lot more pep and power.

Disappointed

This is my first Subaru. I am experiencing the annoying wind noise from the triangular window on both the passenger and driver’s side. It certainly has put a damper on the fun of owning a new vehicle. I have been waiting for a call from the dealership, which is waiting for a service bulletin from Subaru. Otherwise, it seems to be a wonderful vehicle.

Subaru roadside assistance is a joke - not funny

T, 07/28/2021
2015 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 4dr SUV AWD (2.5L 4cyl CVT)

We called Subaru Roadside Assistance Sunday, July 25, 2021 because the Subaru lost power, as though it were out of gas, but the gage showed we had over an eighth of a tank. We mentioned this to the roadside assistant Rep. several times. She took our cell and credit card #s and said she ordered us a tow truck. I asked if the driver will have a gas can with. She said, "Well do you need a tow or fuel?" Repeated AGAIN we didn't know and explained again the car lost power like it was out of gas, but the gage showed over 1/8 of a tank. She said it would be 60-90 minutes. It was 94 degrees, we had no water, no shade, it was horrible. After 90 minutes still nobody came. We called again to see how much longer it would be. COME TO FIND OUT, THEY DIDN'T SEND ANYONE!!!. They said they didn't know if we needed a toe or fuel, so they didn't send anyone, didn't call, NOTHING. They said it would be another 90 minutes. We told them to forget it, hung up and went to a nearby house a person there gave us a bottle of water and from a gas can, provided us enough gas to get to the next gas station 11 miles away. I tried calling subaru headquarters to report the issue and to let them know if our credit card was charged, they need to reimburse it since we did not receive service, but I was on hold for so long, I hung up and emailed them - 3 times and I NEVER heard anything back from them. So do not rely on their gas gage and don't use their roadside assistance - one big joke, but not a funny one.

Very nice car just could have some better thought out design work inside. The biggest gripe we have is the Starlink system, it could be much improved. The screen is hard to see in strong sunlight and the response of the touch screen is clunky. I have also noticed that having an external GPS close to the Starlink can cause the microprocessor in the thing to lockup, pretty bad shielding. We also feel that clock, temp and compass are in the wrong place hard to see, very small, you end up taking your eyes off the road. We use the Outback to haul our kayaks, the roof carrier looks flimsy but works perfect and we had no issue getting a trailer hitch installed by U-Haul to carry our bikes. Would I buy another one? Not sure, our other vehicle is a CR-V and it seems to be much better designed and more rugged than the Outback. An update to my review, we had the opportunity to purchase a second 2015 Outback with 4200 miles with the eye site and collision avoidance options. Replaced the CR-V somewhat bitter sweet feelings. Still pleased with the Outbacks they run well and continue to fit out life styles. Our only issue so far has been the tailgate lift assembly, both cars had it fail when the cars were 2 years old, so far the replacements have continued to work but the design is junk. Update: After having the Outback for two years I have to say it has performed very well. We have had no major issues with the vehicle. Gas mileage combined is 25-27 after two years. We were able to purchase another 2015 Outback from an estate a few months ago with only 4200 miles on it. This model came with the Eyesight and Collision avoidance features, I must say that these work very, well much to my surprise. One issue common to both cars is a not so great paint job. They both show even minor scratches very obviously due to the white primer coat also the body dings very easily. I am sure this is common to all new cars, very light weight materials. Update: Well we still have the Outback and it has performed very well no major issues. One issue that did pop up was the motorized lift rear hatch. The motor became very noisy and operated clunky. Subaru replaced it under warranty, looks to be a known issue. Much to our surprise we ended up replacing the CRV with another 2015 Outback which has the same faults as the original but all-in-all is a really decent vehicle which I would recommend. The rear lift gate motor went bad on that Outback as well. The second Outback came with the collision avoidance features which work surprisingly well. July 2018 update: Still have both of our 2015 Outbacks and they continue to perform well. A couple of notes, whatever Subaru tells you about changing the oil at 6,000 miles do not wait that long the dealer I use recommends 5,000 miles and I agree. I have had to add a quart of oil at 3500 miles to both cars which I believe to be normal, the synthetic oil is more expensive but it seems to hold up well. Also, the OEM tires on number one Outback only lasted 24K miles and they were rotated every 5K, they could do better on these. Tires on my second outback seem better now at 19.5K, not the same brand as the other Outback.

Bad battery bad service

My two year old Subaru has had a dead battery four times now.....once after being left at airport for a week in cold weather. (I forgave it, but had battery checked out and was told it was "good.") another time I thought maybe I had left a light on (I forgave it again,,,maybe my fault). But today was time number 4......and Subaru dealer said I had to have it towed in to have battery checked. Unfortunately Subaru road service couldn't tow because it would go into neutral (no power) and therefore they couldn't tow....and dealer (Fitzgerald) said I could have it charged (by AAA) and bring it in but then probably battery would check out so they couldn't replace. ugh,,,catch 22. So after spending a lot of money to taxi an elderly parent to a doc appt today, I just had AAA come and replace battery. I am very annoyed since Subaru couldn't help and didn't 't stand behind their car. Last Subaru I buy....

Wife and I purchased our 2015 Subaru Outback Premium (green with tan interior) in late 2014, and have put a tad over 80k miles on it. It's always been dealer maintained, by the book. Has only required one repair, and that was a front wheel bearing. Still looks nearly new, both interior and exterior. What a solid and safe vehicle. Couple sets of new Michelins, a couple of batteries and wipers, and that's been it. Zero rattles, etc.

Wanted to love it. but the p1449 code is WTF

Dad Driver, 02/07/2025

1 of 1 people found this review helpful

I do like Driving this but, Bought it as the vehicle is advertised as an SUV styled AWD wagon. First week of owning drove 6 hours through a wet snowstorm. The next day had a p1449 code. The Charcoal canister in the wheel well and under the Rear diff fills up with water somehow and blocks the gas tank vent system. The dash lights up with the CEL engine light and more and disables electronics in a way. It also prevents you from filling your tank as it shuts the gas fill reflex at the pump and takes a long time to fill the tank. WTF Subaru? Can't drive an SUV in wet snow? My Minivan handed wet snow better than this SUV. It also would not start at -24c? Failed Block heater? But only -24? I have been spoiled by a reliability of a Toyota Sienna that started down to -40c. This Outback has been subpar in this regard. I wish I bought a Highlander for the $5000 extra.

I owned a 2015 Subaru Outback Premium PZEV for about six months, and it was a capable, roomy, well-appointed vehicle. I traded it in only because I couldn't live with the sluggish acceleration and whiny CVT drone in the 2.4L drivetrain. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this car to anyone who values all-wheel drive stability, plenty of cargo space, lots of driver safety features and a really comfortable cabin. It was just that my personal preference and priorities didn't quite mesh with the Subie's appointed mission of getting folks and a lot of their stuff easily from A to B with little drama or excitement. While that was a deal-breaker for me eventually, I know lots of folks will be very happy with an Outback as their daily driver.

I have owned my 2015 Subaru Outback for 3 years and have 52000 miles on it. Fuel economy has been 32 overall. Long road trips 55mph=39mpg, 60=36mpg, 65= 33.5mpg all measured at the pump instead of the inaccurate vehicle computer. The original Bridgestone tires are junk and were replaced at 30600 miles with much superior Michelen Defenders. Original 35 series battery is undersized for cold weather and all the accessories. I replaced it with an AC Delco group 24 with twice the reserve capacity with slight modifications to the battery blanket. Front seat comfort was an issue for me on long trips, sheepskin sideless seat covers from Costco took care of that. Overall I am very happy with the car and would definitely buy it again.

Needed a new wheel bearing after 44,000 miles

These cars have such a good rep, but after owning two and both needing new wheel bearings, the first after 100,000 miles, the second after 44,000 miles, I give up on Subaru. I bought it new and my wife drove it for 3.5 years and loved it. We really liked the comfort, driving feel, performance and value compared to other new cars, but they are just not dependable.

Loved my little green Subi but like the title suggests I had a high milage vehicle ( 2015 = 60,000 miles) driving mostly on Mexico's rough roads...The only three things I would have changed or added to it would be a more convenient for the lever for the gas cap door, a way of telling which tire was loosing air and a driver lane adjust feature...When I found out the 2018 had most of these features I had to buy one... 2 out of 3 features is not too bad..........

I have a few months with this car. Its very reliable handles very good it is a very strong vehicle. The materials on this interior of this car are very high quality the leather of the seats feels good. Very comfortable on the rear seats it’s like an SUV Toyota Avalon. A tall person can fit perfectly in the back seat. Trunk space is very good can fit 4 big suitcases and 2 small suitcases. I love this car very reliable, strong, safe, and beautiful and elegant vehicle the only thing I dislike of this car is the fuel economy that’s the only reason I won’t give it 5 stars, I get 18 mpg in the city and sometimes 19 in the highway. Is not the best in economy but very safe and reliable.

small reoccurring problems that I feel should have been covered but weren't, the gas cap opener failed, repaired $400 and happened again, should have been covered, I felt the leather on drivers seat was breaking down and splitting, no real sign yet but I could feel it. the transmission slipped more and longer than it should have as with I often backed out on to a main road and had to wait as it slipped dangerously long before drive would work.

Please note, I rarely ever give 5 stars to anything, no rave reviews, or recommendations to family and friends. Based on my short experience w/this vehicle, you can tell that so far I am VERY PLEASED. Have been driving 60 years or so, and all types of vehicles from a VW to a delivery truck/van to a school bus. I started with a "standard shift" in a '56 Ford Fairlane, loved the Olds, Delta '88 station wagon, although it was very long. My latest vehicle was a 2010 Toyota RAV 4, which I was pleased with, and thought I would probably keep another couple of years at least. Someone hit that one, and was the cause of my going to shop for another car. I learned of a 2015 Subaru Outback and asked if I could test drive it, which I did. I was immediately "in love", it "fit" like the most comfortable pair of shoes I have ever owned. Decided then and there I wanted it, but had to wait, since it had just come into the dealer's possession and had not even been thru their shop. Within two days I was the proud new third owner. Previous were a dealer, as a demo, and I suspect the second owner leased. There were only 15,000+ miles on it. While I have only owned it a week, I am very pleased w/the features I have tried, other than the necessary ones that work fine. The backup camera is an added plus, the radio works well for my needs. The seats are comfortable, had hoped to get "heated" ones, but this car did not have them. A BIG PLUS for me, when making a left hand turn, I don't have to strain forward to see the curbing on the street divider, because the windshield post is positioned just right, for me to see it w/o moving. My neighbor who was with me the day I test drove it, sat in the back seat and said it was very comfortable. Sound "proofing" against outside news suits my needs Fairly soon I will get to take it on a two day, interstate driving test run, when I travel to visit family. Hope it handles well. I did see a comment about it not handling well in wind. After driving a huge school bus that didn't handle well in high winds, I am interested in how the Subaru handles.. I am guessing "just fine"... I have no idea about repairs as yet, or dealer support (they seemed great, getting the car ready for me), Anything marked N/A is just because I have not had the car long enough to know the answers, and because I have not tried some of the features. It is unlikely I will use the phone in the car. I check my phone when I make a stop and if needed make any calls at that point. While I have driven in the rain, and it did well, I have not had an opportunity to drive in the snow, and actually hoping I won't have to till next winter. It has all wheel drive, as did the RAV 4 which did very well in some severe snow storms I ran into driving I-40 in N.C., so it should be fine. The fact that the spare is in the "well" didn't make me happy to lose that extra storage space that I had in the RAV4 w/the wheel on the door. I would also have liked to have that "gate" type door, rather than the lift up which I may have trouble closing since I am very short. I miss the type gate/door, tailgate feature I had on the "Olds". That was the best feature ever and I think car manufacturers might consider that again. It was great for many reasons.

I’ve owned my 2015 3.6R Subie for 6 years and 70k miles. No issues at all. I take road trips to very remote places and have utter confidence in the Outback. I climb rugged mountain passes, cross barren desert trails, ford streams, and drive 90 mph on Interstates. All without problems. I also camp in the car and sleep in back. Go Subaru!

Just Ok

I recently just sold my 2015 Subaru Outback Limited 2.5L. After almost 7.5 years of ownership and 83K miles I feel compelled to write you final thoughts. As a new car, I liked the Outback a lot. It drove pretty tight, handled well and initially seemed pretty well put together. Having owned Toyotas in the past I was hoping for better long term quality. In my time of owning the 2015, both front CV joints needed replacement before 50K miles. Every wheel bearing was replaced, two of them twice. When driving the car to trade-in on a new Toyota I could tell another wheel bearing was going to go out soon. After 7 years the car had a ton of squeaks and rattles. The CVT transmission was starting to feel a little funny and I would assume, true to its reputation, it was not long for this world. The CVT was the main thing driving me to dump the car. The HK stereo was pathetic at best. Pretty sad that this radio was supposedly the upgraded version that came in the Limited. Worse "upgraded" stereo I have ever had in a car. Subaru's mirror link served no purpose, total joke of a technology offering in 2015. Apart from the negatives above the car was an ok daily driver. It got solid gas mileage, had good interior layout and was very functional overall. It was very underpowered though. For the amount of money that Subaru is asking for the 2022 Outbacks with the 2.5L engine I just don't see the value any longer. Especially with the quality concerns i experienced with my car. Subaru needs to do some serious upgrading to the base engine and dump the garbage CVT transmissions. I didn't have an major mechancial failures in the time of my ownership but the little things (like having to replace wheel bearings, I got good at it) got old. I would not recommend one of these as a used car purchase at this point in time.

Bought new, didn't get all the new eyesite safety features but has been a extreme reliable vehicle and fits a lot of stuff in back. We have 2 dogs: a great Dane and a boxer who both fit and like riding in it! Gets 22-23 mpg which is good enough and the all wheel drive is used occasionally. We did get the just out navigation and 8" touch screen option which still works well, although a little slow to connect occasionally.

We purchased a 2015 Subaru Outback limited. We really wanted to like this car. Unfortunately the leather seats were too small and very painfully uncomfortable. The center console in this car makes the interior space too cramped in the front cabin. And most most painful of all, the forward tilting head restraints caused severe pain in our upper backs, shoulders and necks. After a 30-minute drive, we were in very bad pain in our necks and backs. So we had to return the car to the dealer. This is really unfortunate because the car has wonderful attributes if it were not for these problems. Maybe petite small people can be okay with this car.

Our Outback's size, comfort and utility has served us well as a commuting car, kid transporter, and road tripper. I especially love the safety features including Eyesight which makes driving both easier and safer. It has never stranded us. With 42,000 miles we have had two minor problems: a very minor oil gasket leak and a stuck fuel door. Both were repaired under warranty. My only disappointment is that despite careful driving, we our fuel economy is about 7% below below the EPA estimates. The past year we looked at new vehicles but didn't feel that there was enough to gain to justify the cost of replacing out 2015 UPDATE 1.15. 2022: After researching and driving potential replacements (Ford Escape PHEV, Hyundai Santa Fe / Tucson hybrids, RAV-4 hybrid) for our 2015 Outback we just purchased a 2022 Outback Touring 2.5i for the improved comfort and safety features. Despite the many newer models we found that an Outback is still the best fit for our needs.

2015 Outback after an 87 Loyale Wagon & 01 Legacy

Excellent overall vehicle at a very competitive price. My other current vehicles are a 2007 Infiniti M35 and a 2007 Honda Ridgeline, both purchased new, so I'm used to driving decent vehicles. Outside of carrying loads like a pickup truck or hybrid truck does, the Outback does almost anything one would want from a vehicle. Great utility and economy at a low entry price. Even the flat 4 cylinder does a better job than expected. Update at 15,000 miles: Outback is still performing well and gets better gas mileage than I expected. I have not had to return to the dealer to fix any problems, but it does have a pending recall for a faulty brake pedal switch. The car provides the versatility I wanted and is easy to maintain. My vehicle leased in Florida came with free oil changes at 6,000 mile intervals. But I do my own oil changes, and doing the Outback is a breeze.

This is my first Subaru. I traded a 2011 Jetta Wagon TDI for it. I traded because I wanted an AWD for weather situations, and mountains. I knew it would have lower gas mileage. However, I was not expecting such a vast difference in fuel mileage. I am now angry almost daily, as I watch the gas meter drop before my eyes. I clearly have made a terrible mistake. The gas consumption of this car is disgusting. I want my TDI back (sad face). Well, it's a few years later now, and Edmunds asked me to add new thoughts to this review. I'm now used to the Outback. It's a good car. I feel safe in it. The TDI certainly had better mileage, and it was the most fun car I have ever owned.

The battery has failed three times in three years, and been replaced once. One of the lighter outlets has never worked. Car is very under powered. The center consoled ergonomics is non existent with parking controls taking up most of the room. Fold down seats should fold flatter than currently. The Outback is way overrated and desperately needs interior redesign and reengineering. I understand that most users prefer the Outback for outdoor recreation (i.e. The Northwest), but I fail to see why when the cup holder does not even hold a cup of coffee. I understand the Outback is very popular and holds resale value, but unless Subaru works on tweaking this vehicle it will be taken over by another brand. I will not recommend the Outback in the current state and am very disappointed.

I don't know where the issue emanates from but we are having battery issues with our 2015 Outback. Took it to Advance Auto Parts to have the battery tested and was told it has the wrong battery in it. Apparently the car is rated for a 490 cca battery but has a 360 cca battery in it. Contacting dealership today to try to resolve the issue. We have never replaced the battery ourselves and bought the vehicle brand new so I am assuming it came off the lot with this battery but don't know for sure. I guess someone could have tampered with it but we have only had oil changes etc. done at the dealership.

I am original owner. My 3.6r limited is not fully loaded. It does not have eyesite, gps and sunroof. But that is exactly what I was looking for to reduce the price. I follow regular maintenance intervals. Recently replaced brake fluid an battery. Brakes still good. I replace engine and cabin air filters once a year. It has 45k miles on it. Average consumption is 24.8 mpg. I am thinking doing drain and fill cvt... need more info.... so many different opinions, and subaru is not clear on it as well. They extended warranty to 10y 100k. But I like to run all preventative procedures to keep the car as long as I am happy with it. Overal very good car for Colorado.

Don't let the the internet reports confuse you, it is a station wagon, not SUV. The sitting position of most of the seats are sedan/ wagon feel. The driver seat is a little more SUV-ish but is still not totally convincing. If you are looking for SUV, looks elsewhere. I got the limited with whatever features that came with the trim... no additional upgrades. There are a few things I don't like about: 1. Acceleration is slow and the engine is noisy. 2. Steering wheel is thin and small and doesn't feel very sophisticated. 3. Back camera is fish eye. Image is highly distorted and make it less reliable for park assistance. 4. Limited trim still doesn't come with the back up object alert or cross path detection which is pretty much the basic safety standard. With Subaru's advertising focus on safety features of their cars, the lack of such basic safety features in the limited trim is simply not acceptable. The entertainment/info center is easy to read but it's too simple and lack of features. In another words.. boring. 5. One of the worst lack-of-feature is that it doesn't provide push start and remote-less entry. This is something almost all American cars offers as standard feature at their mid trims. I am not sure why Subaru has the reserve it as an upgrade option. This is just cheap. 6. And make it even worst is that the key form is so dated. It's long and sharp and cannot fold or retreat. It's couple generation behind in term of key form and technology. This is a shame! 7. And another cheap design is that there is no height adjustment for the front passenger seat. It's also a standard feature for most of the current American cars. And my Subaru is not the lowest trim, its an limited and it still don't provide height adjustment for the passenger seat? This is a joke. And my passengers feels pretty not happy nor super comfortable with that low sitting position. Definitely not something anyone would expect to find in a "SUV" like car. Interior material is relatively okay but not great. Even it gives leather wheel, leather knob, leather seat... the leather quality just doesn't feel upscale. It's a Subaru... good thing is that it doesn't pretend it's an upscale car... because it's not.

Less than three years, my "leather" driver's seat looks like a 1960's Chevy vinyl seat. That's because it IS mostly vinyl, not leather. The bolsters on the lower seat disintegrated. Cheap vinyl, became very brittle and cracked. I'm 6'-1" and 235 pounds.....big, but not HUGE. Very disappointed, and Subaru would not make good on it. So now, I have a three (almost four) year old car that looks like a thirty year old car. I had three Chevies, ten years each, before this car. I should not have left Chevy. Disappointed with Subaru.

I truly enjoy owning my Outback. However this vehicle has been traded in for a 2022 Outback Touring XT.I do not know when I posted the initial review, there have only been 3k miles put the vehicle since then. My son probably put on the bulk of the mileage until he took delivery of his 2017 Impreza Premium. At least this vehicle has only been to the dealer fro maintenance; unlike his 2011 Cruze that was always being repaired. Notice to those considering a new Outback. Please be aware that there are some design features that are just not driver friendly. The electric tailgate. You must UNLOCK all the passenger doors to use this feature from inside the vehicle. You have now opened yourself up to being carjacked. I own a GMC Terrain and when I go to the supermarket and have the groceries loaded into the vehicle, I have all the passenger doors locked, I don't even need to have the vehicle turned on for the electric tailgate to work. The store employee can load the groceries while I sit inside the vehicle safe. The remote start, what joke. You remote start the vehicle, but when you open the drivers door the engine stops. I own my vehicle since Nov 2014 as I update my review July 26,2016. I have about 10k miles on it. Here in the Philly area it has been close to 100 degrees lately, and the a/c is downright cold! I have gotten past the poorly thought out features. I truly am enjoying owning the Outback. It doesn't ride as smoothly as my GMC Terrain AWD, however I would never consider taking my Terrain off road, but would take the Outback. The EyeSight (TM) \was the best decision I made. It is unbelievable. It makes driving in traffic much more relaxing, once you trust it. The 2.5i engine is sufficient for my purposes. The vehicle is comfortable, quiet, and was just a good value overall. I am very pleased so far with the performance of my Outback. I have actually sold one for the dealer. Oh the dealer..these are great people. Prestige Subaru in NJ has provided outstanding customer service. I cannot say enough good things about them. I purchased my Outback and my Terrain from smaller family owned dealerships. The personalized service is well worth seeking this kind of dealer to do business with. Maybe one day the folks at Subaru will re engineer those few poorly thought out items.

I had many disappointments with my 2015 Limited 3.6. First, either the dealer or factory screwed up and I received the wrong color interior. I did like the reasonable performance, that was a point in it's favor. But, things went down hill. I'm a shorter stature middle age guy without kids or spouse to haul. Some of us like a SUV just because of it's higher ride height. It was easy to get into, but, getting out, the wide door sills would always brush on the back of my legs. Not great when you're wearing nicer and/or light color pants. Then, the battery problems started. After three replacements, I dumped it because my confidence in Subaru was now shot. I was further disappointed with lack of cabin amenities: no ventilated seats, no memory settings with exit position, no power tilt/telescope steering wheel. The roof rack should be an option instead of a standard feature. Not all of us need them and it's quite unsightly and creates it's own noise. All in all, even after looking at a new 2020, I'm not coming back to Subaru.

Initially I thought the 2015 was a vast improvement. But then disappointment set in. Subaru has resorted to lesser quality and cheap product. First my tires needed replacing at 25 k miles due to company using “softer” rubber on new car tires. Then the rear brakes needed replacing at 35k miles because of the “awd “! This never happened for this reason on my previous 17 year old Subaru. Then my passenger seat “leather” split twice! I was told that you are not getting leather when buying a Subaru now, but pleather...which cracks and splits in dry/hot/high altitudes. The first time I was under warranty, the second time I was out of pocket. Then at 50k the battery went...right after the dealer checked the battery and said all was ok. I t died on a camping trip! Then I read multiple reviews all saying there are problems with a lesser quality battery. I have sunk way too much money for a car that was at 50k mileage. The warranty stinks compared to other brands. My friends are happy with their RAV’s and Honda. I will never buy another Subaru and plan to dump this one.

With this Outback, my wife is pleased, but not me. When Isit in the front seat I feel like I am about to eat the roof in front of me. The old Outback's roofline did not slope down as much as this one. I have poor visibility in this car. I wanted to like the new Outback but it's not for me. I've been looking for a car myself, so far the Cmax is a better option.

I've always wanted a Subaru in our family's fleet and my family finally gave in. This car drives and handles amazingly well. We've had some prestige labels in our driveway and currently have an x3 BMW. They are both great on the highway but for country roads or in traffic, Outback hands down. Of the 12+ cars I've owned, it's neck n neck for 1st place.

These buttons should have a cover or be placed In different location.

Pros. It has great awd, outward visibility, good comfort and surprisingly good mpg considering the reviews I've read. I average 30.3 mpg. Steering is comfy, seats are good but not great, tons of room, and I feel safe in the snow. I have noticed when it is cold the awd system takes a more active split which decreases the mpg on highway to 27ish which is fine for the safety increase. Now for the cons. The engine is a joke. I came from a 2014 accord, and that felt like a jet engine compared to this. I am EXTREMELY hesitant to pass, particularly if there is any more weight than just me in the car. It is a "must" to literally floor it when passing. Seriously disappointed in the oomph here. The seats in the accord were also much better, but these are "ok". There is a ton of body roll in corners, this is definitely a car intended for slow poke family and grandparent drivers. I figured out that the buggy infotainment was due to the radio trying to read texts and my phone not allowing it, upgraded the stars to 3.

The good - dependable, durable materials, spacious for passengers, solid feel (built like a tank), good cargo size, good heated seats, good AWD system, good sound system, decent mpg. The bad - very uncomfortable drivers seat (too hard, short seat depth), driving position not great, unexpected repairs required in 3 years of light driving (incl. fuel cap release and tailgate mechanism), dated nav/infotainment system, CVT transmission is lame (poor acceleration) and overall handling while not terrible for a big vehicle is not at all engaging. Buy if you live on a farm, need a decent off-roader or have very messy kids, otherwise look elsewhere. I did and I love my 2017 Mazda CX-5 for all the reasons I didn't love the Outback.

BETTER than expected, across the board. Huge improvement over our 2009, which is a GREAT vehicle and still in the family. Eyesight is a MUST HAVE. Fuel economy was 24-25 overall on our 2009, 29-30 overall on this 2015. HUGE improvement in the Auto climate control. We have almost 15,000 miles on her now, and we are elated. We also pull a medium sized tent camper, and the CVT performance has exceeded our wildest expectations. Build quality was PERFECT, no issues at delivery, a first for us! 23,000 miles now, and still AWESOME. Really impressive in the snow and ice. We are Subarued for life. UPDATE Request from Edmunds- 30450 miles. Only basic maintenance required. Minor issue with the power tailgate with EXCELLENT support from Subaru. OUTSTANDING winter performance. We LOVE the navigation. Best car we have ever owned.

Finishing my third year of driving my first Subaru. Will not buy this car after the lease ends. The driver seat is not comfortable for a big person (6'1, 245) , as the wings come forward and force me towards the door if I don't want to get poked in the back. I also don't know where all these folks are getting great gas mileage, because I'm lucky to get 22 around town and maybe the upper 20's on a long trip. For comparison, I get 25-26 on my Toyota Avalon and 31 highway with a 3.5 liter V6. The winter snow capability is average, but hardly compares to my old Jeep Cherokee with 4wd. The transmission is very sluggish when it's cold, and I am unhappy with the 4 cylinder pickup when accelerating from a stop if you have to pull out with some muscle. Not to be all negative, though, the cargo room is excellent, and the seats fold almost flat. There is over 6 feet of usable cargo length, a rarity in this size SUV.

Dead Battery Again!!

This is the third time my battery has died for no apparent reason. Two times were just after pumping gas at the gas station. I pumped the gas and pressed the ignition button, as usual, but it just died. Nothing was plugged in. Radio was on, but that was nothing new. The first two times, it was jumped off pretty easily, but this last time, it took a while to get the battery alive enough to start the car. I took it to Advance Auto parts for a battery check. Aside from being quite suprised at the low battery amps (356) that comes with the car, the guy said the battery checked out fine. After further research, it seems that Subaru uses a lightweight battery that supports the bells and whistles, but not the engine. I would much rather have a dependable battery that supports the engine than all the USB chargers and stuff that are luxury items.

After 17 years of owning my first Subaru, I bought a 2014 . A total lemon! After much hassle, Subaru replaced the car. At first the 2015 was great. Then! At 25k miles the tires had to be replaced. At 35k miles the rear brakes had to be replaced. Then the drivers seat split. Then the back of the drivers seat ripped. And today, the battery went after keeping the tailgate open too long (1 hour). As for the seats, your are not buying leather. You are buying “pleather”. This fake leather does not tolerate high altitudes, hot sun or dry climates. I finally got an honest answer...Subaru is selling new cars with substandard equipment to keep the price low....cheap brakes, soft rubber tires, smaller battery. Goodbye Subaru...you are not what you used to be. I am looking at trading it in for a RaV hydride.

Very comfortable car for long trips. Best seats we've ever had in a car. Added Michelin Premiers at 40K for added safety - quieter than the OEM tires. Still original brake pads on the front. The added after market plastic film paint shield [Armorshield] on the front end is doing a great job protecting against paint chips so common in the Northeast. Still get compliments on the factory wheels when stopped at traffic lights - LOL!
