Subaru roadside assistance is a joke - not funny

We called Subaru Roadside Assistance Sunday, July 25, 2021 because the Subaru lost power, as though it were out of gas, but the gage showed we had over an eighth of a tank. We mentioned this to the roadside assistant Rep. several times. She took our cell and credit card #s and said she ordered us a tow truck. I asked if the driver will have a gas can with. She said, "Well do you need a tow or fuel?" Repeated AGAIN we didn't know and explained again the car lost power like it was out of gas, but the gage showed over 1/8 of a tank. She said it would be 60-90 minutes. It was 94 degrees, we had no water, no shade, it was horrible. After 90 minutes still nobody came. We called again to see how much longer it would be. COME TO FIND OUT, THEY DIDN'T SEND ANYONE!!!. They said they didn't know if we needed a toe or fuel, so they didn't send anyone, didn't call, NOTHING. They said it would be another 90 minutes. We told them to forget it, hung up and went to a nearby house a person there gave us a bottle of water and from a gas can, provided us enough gas to get to the next gas station 11 miles away. I tried calling subaru headquarters to report the issue and to let them know if our credit card was charged, they need to reimburse it since we did not receive service, but I was on hold for so long, I hung up and emailed them - 3 times and I NEVER heard anything back from them. So do not rely on their gas gage and don't use their roadside assistance - one big joke, but not a funny one.

Very nice car just could have some better thought out design work inside. The biggest gripe we have is the Starlink system, it could be much improved. The screen is hard to see in strong sunlight and the response of the touch screen is clunky. I have also noticed that having an external GPS close to the Starlink can cause the microprocessor in the thing to lockup, pretty bad shielding. We also feel that clock, temp and compass are in the wrong place hard to see, very small, you end up taking your eyes off the road. We use the Outback to haul our kayaks, the roof carrier looks flimsy but works perfect and we had no issue getting a trailer hitch installed by U-Haul to carry our bikes. Would I buy another one? Not sure, our other vehicle is a CR-V and it seems to be much better designed and more rugged than the Outback. An update to my review, we had the opportunity to purchase a second 2015 Outback with 4200 miles with the eye site and collision avoidance options. Replaced the CR-V somewhat bitter sweet feelings. Still pleased with the Outbacks they run well and continue to fit out life styles. Our only issue so far has been the tailgate lift assembly, both cars had it fail when the cars were 2 years old, so far the replacements have continued to work but the design is junk. Update: After having the Outback for two years I have to say it has performed very well. We have had no major issues with the vehicle. Gas mileage combined is 25-27 after two years. We were able to purchase another 2015 Outback from an estate a few months ago with only 4200 miles on it. This model came with the Eyesight and Collision avoidance features, I must say that these work very, well much to my surprise. One issue common to both cars is a not so great paint job. They both show even minor scratches very obviously due to the white primer coat also the body dings very easily. I am sure this is common to all new cars, very light weight materials. Update: Well we still have the Outback and it has performed very well no major issues. One issue that did pop up was the motorized lift rear hatch. The motor became very noisy and operated clunky. Subaru replaced it under warranty, looks to be a known issue. Much to our surprise we ended up replacing the CRV with another 2015 Outback which has the same faults as the original but all-in-all is a really decent vehicle which I would recommend. The rear lift gate motor went bad on that Outback as well. The second Outback came with the collision avoidance features which work surprisingly well. July 2018 update: Still have both of our 2015 Outbacks and they continue to perform well. A couple of notes, whatever Subaru tells you about changing the oil at 6,000 miles do not wait that long the dealer I use recommends 5,000 miles and I agree. I have had to add a quart of oil at 3500 miles to both cars which I believe to be normal, the synthetic oil is more expensive but it seems to hold up well. Also, the OEM tires on number one Outback only lasted 24K miles and they were rotated every 5K, they could do better on these. Tires on my second outback seem better now at 19.5K, not the same brand as the other Outback.

small reoccurring problems that I feel should have been covered but weren't, the gas cap opener failed, repaired $400 and happened again, should have been covered, I felt the leather on drivers seat was breaking down and splitting, no real sign yet but I could feel it. the transmission slipped more and longer than it should have as with I often backed out on to a main road and had to wait as it slipped dangerously long before drive would work.

Bad battery bad service

My two year old Subaru has had a dead battery four times now.....once after being left at airport for a week in cold weather. (I forgave it, but had battery checked out and was told it was "good.") another time I thought maybe I had left a light on (I forgave it again,,,maybe my fault). But today was time number 4......and Subaru dealer said I had to have it towed in to have battery checked. Unfortunately Subaru road service couldn't tow because it would go into neutral (no power) and therefore they couldn't tow....and dealer (Fitzgerald) said I could have it charged (by AAA) and bring it in but then probably battery would check out so they couldn't replace. ugh,,,catch 22. So after spending a lot of money to taxi an elderly parent to a doc appt today, I just had AAA come and replace battery. I am very annoyed since Subaru couldn't help and didn't 't stand behind their car. Last Subaru I buy....

Only complaint is the radio should remember what station I had on. Love all the safety features and at 65 mph I average 34 mpg! Great in upstate NY snow. This is our 8th,very good resale\trade in value.
