2024 Subaru Crosstrek Consumer Reviews

Most frustrating vehicle I've owned
My '24 premium has on multiple occasions decided that it needs to slam the brakes for invisible obstacles. It hits them HARD. The dealer is powerless to fix it as the car is acting as programmed and there are no adjustments to make. The system can be turned off every time you start the car by going several layers deep into the menu on the unresponsive touch screen, only to test your to 4+ orange lights on your dash. The car rattles from the dash rather intensely and the exterior b pillar trim has started melting. Parts have been on order for 5 months now. Beware that the car has an always on cellular connection you can't control. Pulling the fuse for it disables your front speakers too. This is my first and last subaru, and it's pretty close to qualifying for the lemon law in my state. All that side, it runs and drives nice, gets better mileage than my Kia Soul ever did, and it's acceptably comfortable.

Improving
Had the base model for three years and upgraded to the Limited version with 180hp. The takeoff from a stop is still slowish unless you gun the car to 4000rpm. On the highway it moves much easier and quicker. Highway noise is obvious, but decent driving in town. Love the 11 inch screen!

I really wanted to like this car.
I have heard nothing but good things about Subarus, but the road noise on this model is beyond uncomfortable. I did extensive research, including test driving several other makes. But while it was great in most other specifications, I obviously overlooked the notation of road noise. In the city I did not notice it, but after purchase when I drove on the interstate it was uncomfortable to say the least. Perhaps I did not notice it during the test drive because there were 3 people in the car. But I frequently drive 90 miles to visit friends and 400 miles to visit family and the road noise was too much. (This was without hearing aids.) I have since taken a 400 mile roadtrip in a Toyota RAV 4. The seats were more comfortable, the infotainment display more to my liking - Crosstrek is a little large, and I found while there are nobs for station selection, I had to take my eyes off the road for way too long to select pre-assigned stations (but there are 18 which is quite nice). I did have to go up a level to get blind spot indicators. Other than that, the safety features were quite good on the Crosstrek. And it one of the shorter crossovers, which was at least somewhat more desirable. Some less important things were better in the RAV 4. The center storage console comes much farther forward, which makes a comfortable resting spot for my elbow; there is a nice little open recessed shelf for sunglasses and such; the trays for holding coins were conveniently placed and shallow, which I prefer; and there was another shallow shelf for holding my cell phone. I will have to pay more for a RAV 4, and will miss my Horizon Blue Pearl color, which I love, but being a hybrid will hopefully make up for this. For me, this will be a better fit overall. If road noise is not an issue for you, and price is a consideration, the Crosstrek would be quite a nice car for you.
A real great car with impressive fuel consumption
I purchased a base 2024 Crosstrek and have driven it around 3000 miles. I am primarily using it to travel on USFS roads to trail heads. The dealership installed a stock 2-inch hitch for a bicycle rack and pull a 500 lb utility trailer. The 2.0 L engine is sufficiently powerful and provides plenty of pull and acceleration. No complaints what so ever. The instrument panel has an LED gasoline consumption gage (among other readings) so I can monitor my driving. What's surprising is that the car is consistently getting between 40 and 45 miles per gallon!

One and Done
This is my first Subaru and I know a lot of people love them. I thought I would love it, but I was wrong. If you live near the woods or just run around town then it is probably an outstanding choice, but if you ever need to take a road trip or need power to get into traffic then probably not the best choice. The engine has no power even if you use the [S] mode and the seats are super uncomfortable for anything more than a few hours on the road. Then there is the road noise, which was a shock. If all you do is a quick test drive near the dealership then the first time you hit the highway might surprise you. I have owned Jeeps with less road noise :).... While I like the design and gas mileage, I am a one and done owner. There are too many other options out there and in this price range. But while not for me, it might be great for you.
