I've treated this car like absolute garbage since I bought it at 40,000 miles, all I've done is a 5000 mile oil change and change the tires. Some cheap parts on the interior and the passenger side window doesn't work all the time when it gets hot, other than that, I need to give a tune-up soon so it wil go another 108,000 miles

I bought this car from the original owner back in June. It already had 172,000+ on the odometer. The car was having trouble with water pouring into the crank case. Turned out the water passages in the lower intake manifold had blown. Was able to get both intake gaskets and valve cover gaskets for only $50. Plus went ahead and put a new timing chain and cam and crank gears just to further its life. Of course with a new timing chain cover gasket, I spent under $120 on parts and the car runs amazing. There does seem to be some rotor wear but not too major. My gas mileage is more like 30 highway, 21 with the AC on and about 22 in town travel. It's extremely reliable which is important to anyone

Intake manifold gaskets twice (120K on car), head gaskets, power window switches, interior pieces fallen off, leaking radiators, etc., etc., ad nausem. One thing after the other. Most infuriating is GM's deliberate design to keep do-it-yourselfers from doing repairs)yourself, i.e., engine mount must be removed to replace the serptine belt! What a scam. I did all the repairs save the head gasket myself, I'd be broke if not. I bought this as a starter car for my son. I'l never buy American again. Honda here I come.

After my Cutlass rolled 100K miles, I had to invest almost $2000 in repairs underneath the hood. Serpentine belt, alternator, water pump, rotors (every 20K miles), shocks, battery (ok, can't complain on that one, it was original) and brakes. My gas gauge went about 3 years ago, so I have to monitor my trip odometer. This past winter, I slid on black ice and "totaled" my car. I slammed into a guard rail pretty hard and I was able to walk away from that accident. This is a sturdy car and I love it. Even though the front fender is damaged, we replaced the steering knuckle and the car is drivable. Now the ABS light comes on every time I start the car. I will keep it until it dies.

My Cutlass was good for the first three years. Then each year I have had 1-2 expensive repairs, including the alternator, head gasket, water pump, struts & mounts, new computer, window switch, all in addition to the usual battery, brakes, belts, tire type maintenance. Now the brakes need turning/replacement AGAIN and the new computer still doesn't seem quite right. Most of the problems started at around 55,000 miles and this car currently only has 80,000! I don't like to go far from home at all. I am planning to unload this high maintenance car ASAP.

After numerous shoddy brake replacements, ABS sensor malfunctions, alternators, premature leather wear, air conditioning faults, transmission disasters, and the final death knell of the infamous intake manifold leak, I'm glad to be saying bye-bye to the Cutlass. Be warned, this is a car you will be pouring major cash into to keep it operational, and that's not including the disappointing fuel economy either.

The car has gone through brakes very quickly two sets and only 53K miles. The two big issues were: 1. The coolant problem gm would not own up too and cost me Major head work $2k 2. Now I am getting false engine warning lights, replace O2 sensor and gas cap, still getting intermittent codes, other warning lights are the charging system which is working at 13.5-14 volts, I am getting a security system light, the power Windows are working intermittently. Anyone know what the heck is going on, I am thinking the computer is on its way out.

Bought this car used in 2002 with 25k on it. Color and finish still look great with 93k on it now. Performed regular maintenance on it but still had many mechanical problems. Head gasket twice, fuel injectors (had to replace 4), brakes, rotors, radio, a/c, power window, thermostat, water pump, steering, etc. Had extended warranty when purchased that paid for most of it but ran out on 2006. Still will keep it. Repairs still cheaper than a new car note every month.

Intake manifold went twice, like everyone else on here $600 the first time and $500 the second time. Alternator, battery because of alternator, rotors and pads, more times than I can count, front end axle, water pump twice. Computer system is a mess, recalled, but didn't bother wasting my time getting it. No wonder they stopped making this car.

Got this car in March just as a point A to point B car. Rides pretty well with a nice suspension and decent power. Fuel economy has been about 17/25/20.5, which is acceptable. The car is roomy and comfortable, but the build quality is pretty iffy. Had a couple interior trim pieces fall off, and some other loosely attached pieces. Mechanically it has help up pretty good, but a cog in the steering mechanism is off-set, not said to be a serious problem though.

I have had my car almost 2 years now. It has 180,000 miles on it we have had it to Florida 4 times, Louisville several. The car still runs like a new one. I see all these bad things wrong with these on here. I guess I just got a good one the only major problem we have had is the intake gasket small problem. Didn't take but $200 to fix. Seems like these people all just got a lemon.

Car is fast and fun to drive. Still no problem with engine. A car will last longer if you take care of it. Giving it a oil change and a complete service.

Car lasted 10 years. Made it to 194874 miles before finally giving out on me. Required a new transmission at 130,000. Rebuilt final gave out. Have spent maybe $750 on service since the new trans. Great little car.

09/00 new brakes $395. 1 yr later replaced alternator. Brake/rotar job 10/01 $454. Battery caught fire 08/01. Front brakes constantly make rubbing sound. Tune up and injectors cleaned $699 08/01. Front end is rough. This is a high maintenance car. Inside is comfortable and roomy. I like the design. The build quality and mechanical reliabilty is not good. Bought the car with 23000 mi on it for my 14 year old daughter. She will be 16 in next few weeks but we are shopping for a different vehicle. I simply don't want her out in this one because it is truly undependable.

Bought car for wife and I too have had this car in for the brakes. Before car reach 20,000 Miles I had the brakes done 4 times. Each time I got a LAME excuse that it was our driving habbits. at around 32,000 I got fed up and went to Autozone and bought the best Rotors and Brake pads I could find, Installed them myself and have not had a problem since. Car now has around 62,00 miles on it--I will never buy anothe Olds/GM product along with a Chrysler product that I had problems with previous to this one. I own a Ford Ranger with over 100K miles and it still runs great, Gas Plugs and check the oil....

Hmm ... I know that the Malibu/Cutlass duo is dubbed "The car you knew America could build", but that isnt saying much. Its an OK car for sure, but i did have to replace the altenator (265.00), my brakes squeek sometimes, and the wood grain, i mean.. plastic trim on the doors rattle quite often. On the plus side the car's design should hold up well over time, and the interior is nice. I think the "blandness" of the car actually work in it's favor, many people think it's nicer and more expensive than what it really is.. you can thank Toyota and Honda for that design inspiration.. All in all, a competant, mediocre car.

Not a bad car, but not a very good car either. It is the very epitome of average. The car is obviously a Chevrolet Malibu doing a poor imitation of an Oldsmobile. The 3.1 V-6 is rather anemic while delivering poor fuel economy. The interior is a classic example of why many criticize GM - it's contemporary American rental car. Despite all these faults, the car is rather reliable and holds up well against it harsh urban environment.

Major problems with front brakes. Several iterations with the dealer before getting the best parts available and doing the job myself. Poor fuel economy compared to other V6s in it's class. Was not long before arm rest broke. Seatbelt has never retracted correctly, plastic guide on belt tab broke off. is this what made in America means ?

Overall, it drives well, but like other midsize GM cars, it's needed frequent repairs - electrical switches malfunction, brakes need frequent replacing, etc.... It's doing well for having 140,000 miles, but I'm always wondering when something will need fixing next.

Has a problem with fuel injectors, they have been cleaned 3 times and replace twice in a year a half period. Have spoken with GM and will not acknowledge a problem with them. If I have had problem with the fuel injectors the car is a great ride and is overall good but would never recommend a General Motors product. The car is roomy and has a spacious trunk.

This car is confortable to sit in and once it gets going, it has a lot of good acceleration. However, on the highway, it is a little shaky, and does not have the refinement of mid-size imports. Engine and trans is reliable, but electrical problems with dash had to be replaced twice, to correct short in climate control. Also, cassette player stopped working after $50K although CD still working. Air conditioner fan cuts out on long road trips. If you are looking for a big American car for a little money, this is not a bad choice.

This could be a High Dollar car if there wasn't so many things going wrong with it. I had bought the car w/36000 miles on it. Break job w/in the 1st year. New tires 2nd year. New internal fan moter for interier comfert 3rd year. And fixed the horn twice during this time. Also the Alternator went out twice.

I got this car cheap ($4,000), but it has had lots of problems already. It needed an intake manifold job, the gas gauge and AC have problems, and now the ABS light is coming on. The brakes are low-grade. The V6 engine is powerful but unrefined and has to work too hard for good pickup. Also, the cupholder next to the steering wheel is lousy. The style is pretty nice for and the seats are comfortable.

4TH BRAKE JOB IN LESS THAN 4 YEARS AND 54K MILES! I also have been told it is my driving habits. First time in 30 years of owning cars that I been told that! I have had some other problems with the car, but it is the brake problems I find totally UNACCEPTABLE! I have called olds customer service at 1- 800-442-6537 to complain. Waiting for a response. If you have had 2 or more brake jobs in less than 4 years, you should call too. This is not only a monetary issue as well as an inconvenience, I am concerned about the safety issue as well.

Purchased new in 1998 by my dad and passed down to me in 2001 - have driven about 90 k miles since then. Tried to convince him to buy Camry but he was a solid GM customer. The best thing I did was to replace the Firestone OEM Affinity tires -- first with Affinity LH30s and later with Yokohama Avid TRZs which were even better. They dramatically improved the ride and handling. After 108k, the car is still solid with no rattles which surprised me for an American car (I've always owned Japanese or German cars.

It all started when a girl wrecked into me and the insurance money got me a 1999 Oldsmobile Cutlass. The gypsy dealer was selling it for 3800 and i got it for 2800 with 108K. My friend's dad (also a mechanic) warned me about this car being a lemon but i didn't believe him and it was a bad choice on me. In order...brakes, tires, pulley tensioner, water pump, head gasket, spark plugs and wires 2x, alternator, and now the A/C has gone out. I've spent 3G's on the car and it doesn't even include the $1,500 rims, new headlights, complete stereo system. Im at 125K and im afraid of more things going wrong and I'm only 18 going to college! Stay away from this car!!!

I got my car in December 1999, it now has 178,ooo miles on it. If you want this car to last do what I did. KEEP UP THE MAINTAINCE. I do the maintaince regularly when scheduled and I fix the minor problems before they become major. This car is still going strong. I will keep it. To bad they don't make this car anymore or I would by another.

This car has the worlds best thought out interior ever. From cupholder locations to armrests and distance to the radio, this car makes everything effortless. I used to commute 75 miles to work. This car made it easy. 211k miles and the poor thing finally died. I'd been neglecting a leaky head gasket for a year... apparently the engine can't handle 300degrees... It sure could handle a lot of other abuse.

Not all of the problems with this car have been with the car. Mechanics have had a hand in it. Excellent winter car performance wise. Rust after 9 years just beginning to show through. Performance comparable with the BMW and Saab that I have driven. 3.5 like a small v-8. Wife was hell on the front end. Nice size for Christmas shopping. Smiles

Had this car for 12 years -- getting a new one because now have children and I had the bare bones version of this with no LATCH, auto windows, etc. I kept up with maintenance, and over the years did replace intake manifold (per GM service note), a couple of batteries, and an alternator (it had been left undriven for three months), water pump, and AC controls. Most of these have been in the last couple of years, which makes sense once the car hits ten years old. Car was very good about warning lights -- most times warning came early enough to get it to a shop and I was never stranded.

the suspension in the rear is really bad the paint is flaking off the car their is a invisible leak during the winter that coolant leaks out. It is just a cheap non quality car that general motors should have never built and the climate control has a short in it.

I found the car to be comfortable enough, and when it works, it works well. Like others, I find it eats brakes up at an amazing rate, having replaced the front brakes 4 times in 90,000 miles. Have had problems with AC, which never worked well, as well as radio,alternator, computer module, an unfindable coolant leak and other minor problems. I am disappointed in the reliability of the car, and am trading it much sooner than I wished due to it's unreliability. Thank God for AAA, which gets called to drag this dog out of the road. This is my second and LAST Olds.

BOUGHT THE CAR IN DEC. 22O2 AND HAD TO PUT FRONT BRAKES ON. THEN BATTERY LIGHT AND BRAKE LIGHT CAME ON THEN NOTHING. PUT ALT. ON $414.00 DOLLARS. THEN TWO DAYS LATER SAY THING. BROKE DOWN TWICE IN THREE DAYS WITH MY KIDS WITH ME. NOT HAPPY AT ALL. STILL DON'T KNOW WHATS WRONG THIS TIME

Mechanically, it has been one thing after another. The rotors were bad after two years, the generator assembly, and a lower gasket seal. Had I not had an extended warranty the lower gasket seal would have cost $700.

I have a 99 cutlass GL. I use it mainly for work. I have 47,000 miles on her and she runs great. Other than standard maintenence, (oil, lube, filter) she has had no down time. too bad 99 was the last year for the car.

My 1999 Oldsmobile Cutlass is quite a nice car and has been reliable, but now that it has 52,000 miles, it is getting expensive to repair. A couple of years ago the heater fan worked only on high. The cost to repair was $126. A couple of months ago it had to have a leaking intake manifold gasket repaired at a cost of over $600. A couple of weeks ago everything went dead at a red light. The alternator had stopped working, killing the battery. The cost of repair was $644. I did the front brakes myself last year and am doing the rear brakes in a couple of days myself. In short, this car is OK if your a good mechanic.

My 1999 Cutlass has only 23,000 miles on it. I also had to have the brakes replaced (at 21,00 miles!). I have just been told I need new tires - even though I have been vigilant about rotating and alignments. There is no way a car with this low mileage should have to have brakes/tires replaced at under 25,000 miles! Other than those issues I have thoroughly enjoyed my Cutlass.

MY car has 45,0000 miles and is getting to its prime. The engine has very nice acceleration, but that's the only good thing about the engine. Could have a nicer interior, but you get what you pay for.

When I bought my Cutlass, it had 170,000 miles on it. It already had the intake and head gasket changed, a few brake services, a transmission service, and a general tune up. After buying it, I replaced the intake gasket again, gave it a full tune up, new brakes and rotors, and new tires. After the engine was in proper working condition, it performs very nicely and if you are easy on the accelerator, the gas mileage is around 25 mpg. The leather in the front seats is cracked and needs some serious attention. The cup holders are basically unusable. The drinks tip over at the slightest acceleration or braking. I am impressed with the massive trunk space. You need to be a good mechanic to to own this car.

The Oldsmobile Cutlass is a pretty good vehicle. It offers up respectable comfort, looks nice and is fun to drive. 0 to 60 time is about 8 seconds, not to great but will do for 150 hp. Overall I enjoy the car.

Car received had numerous quality problems including noisy front brakes, a loud buzzing fuel pump, a rattling dash board, and a noisy passenger air bag cover. There is little excuse to deliver such a vehicle to a customer. What does a manufacturer and dealership think?

The outside styling is bland and conservative. The inside is nice but a bit cramped in the rear seat. The suspension is stiff and the car feels underpowered.
