Is that a Jag your drving?
Well dispite no one ever knowing what a Mercury Cougar is, they always seem to love it once they see it. The design is great, the interior confortable. The storage with this hatch is amazing, just last week I took home a 7 foot long storage unit, and had the hatch shut. The car is a Ford so it does suffer from lots of creeks and rattles, though reliablilty has so far been good. Power is supprizingly sporty despite the slow 0- 60 time. I think its very fun to drive, main complaints being a lousy auto tranny and a large amount of body roll with spirited cornering. I highly suggest this car to those who are looking.
Cougar get an A+
I have had my cougar for around a month now, and it is great. It is a very fun car to drive (it's a v6 5speed). Its definately got nut when you want it to. The back deats are real comfortable, big trunk. If the backseats are folded, it's bigger than my bed. The only thing I do not like about the car is the center console, it's kind of a pain. Other than that, it's all good.

Lemon!!!
This is the worst car ever!!! In the two years since I purchased the vehicle I have had it in the shop 6 times for stalling or not starting. I have problems with my windows leaking. The interior construction is a mess. Shortly after purchase, the upholstry in the back seat starting coming up. And don't get me started on the worthless cup holder that has spilled more drinks than it has supported. Also the interior lights have had shorts since purchase. Other than the cute body style I don't have anything positive to say!
Sporty Value
For once American styling surpassed Japan (in this price range anyway). Considered the Toyota Celica but the cougars' lines flow better. Got all the bells and whistles (leather, sunroof, CD, Chrome wheels) makes the car much more enjoyable in the long run.
Don't Waste Your Time
In the less than 3 years that I have had my car it has been a total lemon. First it was the brake system then the transmission and lately just like the other person on this rating it shuts down on the freeway whenever it feels like. I have had the fuel relay replaced as well as the computer and it still does this. I really wish I could just get rid of it. A great disappointment because it had the potential to be a really great car.
1999 Cougar
Tight suspension, well built, good pick up
Best Car I've Ever Owned
This is my 3rd car and it has been great - no problems whatsoever! It is now 6 years old and has a little over 85,000 miles and the only thing it has been in the shop for is the alternator which went out at 5 years/70,000; however, alternators are a common replacement item on cars. Great gas mileage - I get 6 days out of a tank of gas. I have/will continue to recommend this car to anyone.
Pretty good so far!
I have had this car a little over a year, i like it pretty good. My trunk release has never worked. I have had to have a hose replaced and 2 new front tires and a censor, other than that, its fine. The worst problem I have had is with the dealership. I like it, its sporty and I feel free when i drive.
I love my car
I got my car last summer!! And i love it. I haven't had any problems with it at all!! We had the air conditioner worked on but other than that its been great
Can you beat this?
Can you beat this? Buyers beware. Some have no problems while other have tons. V6 Automatic with 56K miles on it. Part x Replacement Times ----------------------- Altenator x 6 Flywheel x 1 (flexplate in ATX) Brakes Rotors x 1 (Bought aftermarket @ over $500) Brake Pads x 1 (bought aftermarket) Hood Latch Cable x 2 Center console x 1 (still broke) Trunk x1 (fixed self after 2nd time) Radiator hoses replaced x 1 A/C fixed x 1 Weather stripping x 2 (still messed up) Wheel bearing x 1 Defrost vent pops up. Transmission started slipping at 28K and is now slipping nicely at 56K. Alarm still randomly goes off for no reason
Great Ride
Bought it as a Mechanics special... The spark plugs were fouled... That was it. Runs and looks great. I didn't think I would like it. Even with 129,00 miles on it it drives like new... Amazing
Very fun to drive
I love this car. It is incredibly fun to drive, and has a lot of power to it. So far it has also been very reliable. It is fun and sporty looking, and really hugs corners. I would reccommend this car.
purchase only if you're rich
i can not tell you how bad this car is...i bought it used with 65000 miles on it thinking that it wouldn't give me any problems, because i knew someone who owned one. the repair list is as follows: the tie rod ends went on the car. my mechanic was suprised that i was actually able to drive it without the front axel dropping out. the steering rack went, along with the starter that had to be replaced 2x. and now my mechanic thinks the flywheel needs to be replaced. the sunroof broke, and i had to fix it myself, cause i think you're out of your mind if you are gonna spend over $1000 to get it fixed. the upper and lower intake manifolds went and had to be replaced along with the gaskets.
what a junk
ive had my cougar for a while now and till this day it gives me problems. the second day i bought i took it through a car wash and the side mirror broke. and ive had problems with the engine too. i dont think that car is worth $23,000 thats how much i paid for it cuz it was a special edition but man its not worth it at all that why my ex drives it now cuz just like the car hes not worth it.
1999 mercury cougar
The 1999 mercury cougar is a good car to show off, but it runs too slowly. I have an v4 with 120hp when there are many other cars with v4s that have lots more hp.
Best of Mercury
The Cougar was the first car Ive ever bought. It has overall been a good investment. It has good pick up speed, and in my opinion is a comfortable car. Other people have said this car has given them all sorts of problems but mine have been minor, typical car repairs. If your looking for a sports car at a low price, the Cougar is it. Too bad they quit making them. My problems were my driver side window, it will roll down, not up. My check engine light is always on, and ofcourse the infamous cup holder rarely works. It is wise to purchase a warranty, as with any car. I have and that window was a little expensive.
Would not suggest this car to anyone
alternator has gone 4 times in the year and a half...need a new high pressure power steering hose at 6ok miles new rack n pinion new tie end rods ect.
Not a Ford man but I like my Cougar.
Bought with Sport Package option which means the 16" tires, V-6, sport cloth interior, fog lights, spoiler, rear wiper and 4-wheel disc brakes. This car also came with ABS, auto, and traction control. We have had it for 5000 miles and have yet to put a dime into it. The road noise was a bit much but I switch from the Firehawk tires to Dunlop SP Sport A2s and it is extremely quiet now. The windows tend to creak but this is because they don't have a window frame.
Save your money
Don't even waste your money on this LEMON. I have had the car for 5 months now and i have had nothing but problems. The car has been in the shop 6 times already. Everything from the hood and trunk release, sun roof, engine, emission sensors, and the list could go on. I will never buy another Mecury, not to mention that the dealership has been a real pain in the kneck.
You guys are scaring me...
Overall, my Cougar has been great. I bought it new in '99 and have experienced some of the problems others report, but I think these minor problems are to be expected of first- model-year cars. Otherwise, performance has been excellent and mechanical reliability outstanding. It looks great and is fun to drive. Since mine now has 38K miles, what's concerning me are the significant number of reviews concerning major problems (transmission, starter, etc.) beginning around 40k to 60k miles. I'm taking a hard look at the new Mazda RX-8...now may be the time to trade in.
GREAT BODY BUT....
I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE BRAND NEW W/ 7 MILES ON IT. IMMEDIATELY I RAN INTO BRAKE PROBLEMS CONSTANT GRINDING. BRAKE DISC WERE SHAVED DOWN THEN COMPLETELY REPLACED. NEXT PROBLEM ELECTRICAL. CAR ELECTRICAL SYETM THEN THE VEHICLE WOULD SHUT COMPLETELY. TWICE ON THE HIGHWAY!! ON-GOING BATTLES BETWEEN DEALERSHIP NOT WANTING TO WORK ON THE VEHICLE B/C THEY DIDN'T DO THE INITIAL REPAIR WORK. LOVE THE BODY LOVE DRIVING CURVES AND WINDY ROADS. AS A YOUNG PERSON BUYING THIS VEHICLE STYLE OVER RIDES OTHER OPTIONS. I'M NOT COMPLETELY UPSET OVER PURCHASE, BUT NEVER AGAIN BY A 1ST YEAR VEHICLE. LET THEM WORK OUT THE KINKS FIRST AND THEN BUY ONE....
'99 Mercury Cougar
A great car for those who like the "New Edge" style of automobiles. A coupe with a hatch back that allows cargo as large as a Queen size bed.. It gets a lot of attention at the traffic light.
Fun Car
I have had not problems with my Cougar. I love the styling and enjoy driving it. Great gas mileage for a V6 and I costantly get admiring glances. Very fast and good sound system too. I know many people report problems, but I have yet to see them. I purchased a 99 with 27,000 miles cheap and I LOVE IT!
Excellent !!!!!!!
Love it! 4 Cylinder !
I love the Cougar!!!!
I absolutely love this car! It's everything I ever wanted and it's affordable!
My Cougar
Fun to drive. Not very many aftermarket parts available but I am doing what I can to make it a part of who I am. The 4 cylinder has next to nothing for performance upgrades. I don't have a v6, so it is a struggle to add performance. I trust the reliability to drive it anywhere. I had it for about two weeks and took a 2500 mile road trip when it had 167,000 miles on.
Could be better
My car is a 1999. It was a year old when I purchased it. This car has been in the repair shop 9 times in the past 12 months. Everything from catalytic converter, fuel line problems, emission system problems and I had to replace the transmission at 52,000 miles. It's in the shop as I type this. This time for an engine oil leak. As far as looks, the car is great. The interior has a blind spot on the passenger side. I would not recommend this car. As soon as my car is repaired, I'm trading it in.
THE NEW CAT IN TOWN
I purchased my black 1999 Mercury Cougar-V6 Sport Premium in December of 2002 (pre-owned). Some of its qualities are: rear spoiler, 16in" rims, side panel blinker lights, moon roof, fog lights, 600 watt stock am/fm cd player, mint conditioned black interior, solar tinted windows, cougar side panels, cougar emblem floor mats.

I liked this car very well. I get excellent gas mileage and have owned this car for almost 10 years. It has never given me any problem. I did replace the tires in 2007. Not worn out just dry rot.
good to be gone!
Fun to drive but too expensive to maintain. I have nearly 100K on mine and have put in 4 alternators and one converter. Radio will short out at times. Airbag and check engine lights come on in cold or wet weather. Bought the extended warranty up to 75,000 and quite glad I did! Still lost an add'l alternator at 90,000. Will sell it to a teenager soon.
Great car
This vehicle has served us well. We really love the look and it drives well. The v4 doesn't "pick up" too quickly, and it's not comfortable for driving long distances, but that's not what it's made for. It rides very smooth, and hasn't given us a minute's trouble.
What a disappointment...
I would discourage anyone from even thinking about purchasing this car. It has been vitually falling apart since I purchased it 18 months ago. On the outside, the trim around the window is coming loose, the headlights are full of condensation, the paint is easily scratched. On the inside, the defrost trim is constantly popping out, the sunroof motor fell apart, the carpet is pulling away, electrical harness falls out, the cup holder is useless. I have lights lit up all over the dash for no reason. Don't throw your money away. Worst car I ever owned by far and I've owned a bunch.
Love this car
I bought this car as my second vehicle when i was 17. I have now had it for over a year and i love the car. it has more power than i expected from a small car. it gets me where i want to go without any problems. Since i got the car i have only had to make some minor repairs. New tires, and i had to replace the rear bearings on the driver side. good sound system. lots of comfort in the front. the back is slightly crammed but the bucket seats are fun to sit in. overall i would recommend this car.
NICE RIIIDE OVER ALL
I drive my cousins 1999 cougar and have to say it is just awsome. I get attraction all the time. Exterior is just very neat. Interior is also very nice...futuristic lookin....Comfort wise it is very nice...specially driver side..just one problem...seat doesnt move froward or backward....other wise its very comfy....Performance wise it is nice....just doesnt pick up good at the begining but after 30 or 40 it flies....specially on highways...from 60 to 90 no problem...and ride is mad smooth...you cant even tell that ur goin 80 or above....bracking is the most powerfull i have ever seen....I would very highly recommend this vehicle...
Cougar
I have had numerous problems with this car. The fuel pump has gone out three times and the starter has also been replaced. It seems to be sluggish on take-off and dosen't perform like a sports car like I expected. I am very disappointed in this car.
Just ratings
A great car!
145,000 Miles!!!
I purchased my '99 Cougar in '98 - probably one of the first to have one. I have had some of the normal probs, but an extended warranty helped...alternator at 65,000,catalytic converted at 72,000, transmission at 119,000, a wheel bearing and a new headlamp due to the leaky problem. For a domestic, I'm actually quite impressed with the mileage I've achieved. Oh, I am disappointed with the paint job. It has chipped around the front wheel wells.
This is an excellent vehicle!!!
I bought this vehicle to be my college vehicle and I have been more than satisfied. The handling is great. It is a sporty vehicle but isn't considered a sports car making your insurance cheaper than a "sports car". I've driven this vehicle for 4 years now and had no major problems with it and I recommend it to anyone.
Disappointed By Ford
Bought the car new from dealer in '99. Had some minor problems at first with seat trim and a bad speaker. Dealer did a slopshod job with the fix and both problems recurred. Burned through the original set of brakes very quickly. Tires lasted about two years. Now that the car is almost 4 years old, it's starting to disintegrate. There's a persistent oil leak, the defroster vents have popped and won't stay in place when put back, carpet has some very bad "mystery" wear in spots that rarely get used, etc., etc.
Awesome Car
I bought this car used with 108,000 miles on it...my '99 Sable had just crapped out with 220,000 on it so i figured another Mercury would do me good for getting back and forth to college. I now have 139,000 on it and have never had a problem. It has plenty of power except for a dull spot from 3-4000 rpms, then at 4000 she gets up and goes...its the 4 speed auto and it will do 115 in third gear at 6000 rpms...which from a 175 horse v6, is pretty impressive. Another thing is the gas mileage. I get 33mpg on a trip if I drive reasonably. Put your foot in the gas and it drops to about 24.
I have two Cougars!
I love to drive these cars! They can be expensive to fix and a little hard to see out of. The back seat is not a bench, so if you need room in the back, this car is not for you. You can only fit two people in the back, and it doesn't get much leg room. Both of my cup holders are broken, so I have to use the one in the back. There is a lot of trunk space, and the car has pretty good pick up too. But it makes wide turns, forget trying to make a sharp turn, it won't happen. I like the factory rims mine have on them, and I have driven them both to 150,000 miles now. They are an expensive car to fix though, the parts can be kinda hard to find and a little pricey.
THIS CAR IS THE BOMB
THIS VEHICLE HAS THE BEST STYLING, THE BEST FUN RATING TO DRIVE, PLUS I THINK HONDAS SUCK.
1999 Mercury Cougar
I purchased My Cougar in 2001 with 33,000 on him. This car was the strongest car I ever owned it rode like the General Lee! My Dad and I was in a wreck in Nebreska hit the ditch embankment hit a willow tree and drove all the way back to Jacksonville, Florida with a stop in Atlanta. I drove My Cougar until over 145,000 miles the air conditioner was massively strong I had to replace the engine at the last leg but you would never know he was a 1999 and he was the best car ever!! I wish Mercury would make another one. I would buy the car truly love the Cougars Always!

Not a Toyota
I bought this car 2 years ago from a gentleman whose wife could no longer drive due to Alzheimers. They had bought it brand new and when I purchased it the car had 112,000 miles on it. I wish I had never given up my 19 year old Corolla and just put the money into and had a good reliable car. Doesn't drive well in high heat which makes trips to the beach stressful!! Gas mileage is horrible! Two good things I can say is the A/C works very well and there is plenty of trunk space!!
Cougar Not so bad
I have enjoyed my Cougar - it lack some straight line speed, but is fun when moving (take into the foothills and back roads) I have had no probs with mine after 49,000 miles - except the dash is getting a little rattle. But for all that handling and style for 18,500 (and I have the V6) the value has held up well. The I4 is too small, but my six is getting quicker with a few low cost asftermarket parts.
This car is fun to drive
i love this car its cute and fun to drive and takes off pretty fast its great looking i love the lines of this car great features i haven't had any problems with it
A So-So
When I got this car for my 16th birthday I was so excited, but only 3 days later I was taking it to get the belt fixed and the engine light never went off. After fixing all the problems though it's pretty reliable. I can also say it drives great and has great gas mileage for a on-the-go-teen.
I love/Husband Hates
Does someone have an answer ? when my husband first bought this car for me this summer it had 112,000 on it. An let me just tell you I can usually get miles out of my cars. but so far I haven't been able to, we thought that the headlights were the ownely thing wrong. But we were wrong there is a electrical problam, the wheel bearing, the radio buzzes, if I use my rear wiper then my front ones go off too! Then we went too go get a new excaust an come too find out the k-frame rotted out so bad that I could put my foot through one of the holes. I'm lucky my family didn't get hurt. So anyways my car has 18 open recalls did it get fixed NO !! I say ford should do something about this.
Cougar Far From Purrfect
This car is just one problem after the other. If you purchase this car it will spend most of it's time in the shop. I have 44K on mine and the problems have been: defect in brake calippers not retracting which constantly wear out the rotars, sensors continually go out, alternator failed, leaving me stranded on the freeway, transmission greatly hesitates when you really need it the most, radio continually shorts out, cup holder is worthless, front defrost vents pop up. These problems are not one time occurences, they happen over and over again, compounding frustration. Please save yourself the frustration I have experienced and buy a more reliable car.
My Last American Car
I bought my car right after my divorce, thinking that I needed a reliable car to drive my kids around, boy was I wrong. The car has left me stranded numerous times with my children in the car. I've replaced the alternator twice, tied rod ends, wheel bearing 3 times, the check engine light is always on because of a vacuum leak 5 mechanics haven't been able to find, I can't get it inspected, I've put tires on 4 times and it eats brakes, the radio shorts out and the anti freeze light comes on if the antifreeze goes below max level. I'm considering parking the car because I owe so much money on it I can't trade and can't afford to drive it
