23 Times to the dealer for warranty work
In short, this is the worst built car I have ever owned. I had it in for warranty work 23 times in the time that I owned it which was only about 33 months. Between warranty work and regular service, it was in the shop about 3-4 days a month for almost 3 years. Getting rid of it was one of the best decisions I ever made. Door open sensor, check engine light, misfiring cylinder, suspension end links, transmission, brake rotor life is horrendous, trunk latch release, sunroof, dash illumination, the list goes on... I'll never buy another Ford.
Still loving it
Bought new in 99 and still driving it at 53000m. I love the way it handles and it still looks great. Some mechanical issues- fuel pump, trunk latch, and engine light. Fuel pump was the biggest headache - finally got Ford to refund repair cost. (I won't deal with the dealer for repairs!) Overall, I can't complain - it has been reliable and it rides great.

my car
this car is an attention getter. It is slow on takeoff but it goes pretty good after that. I use mine to pull my jet- ski and have had no trouble dropping it or pulling it out of the lake.
Hot Car-Couple BIG problems
I've had my 99 V6 just under 4 years with few problems. But a couple repairs would have been costly had I not purchased the extended warranty. I LOVE the look, the drive is Great! It corners tight. It is the best car I have EVER driven on ice and even snow. The biggest problem is the seats. All of the seats are tremendously uncomfortable and you could not take this car on a long trip. Because of the low-slung design, the blind corner in the rear side is larger than other sport cars. The remote trunk hatch did not work for 3 years - was replaced many times. My headlights did leak water and had to be replaced.
A great car. She's always there for you.
Wonderful car. I have had her for five years and have not had a single engine repair. I'm now at 89,000 miles and it's runing smooth. There seems to be a little trouble with the tire design becuase I have gone through more than my fair share of sets.
I loved it while i had it
I recently just purchesed a new car so no longer have this car but while i had it i had a great time. I received the car as a grad gift 2 years ago and from the date i got it 'til the day i traded it i loved this car! I did have the leak issue that everyone else did but it was a blast to drive & with the after-market exhaust I added it really turned heads!
A decent buy
I bought the car with 125k miles on it for about $2000 under book. The interior has held up well, but the paint has lost some of it't luster. The engine is still reasonably strong, and the steering has held up well. A bit heavy in the corners, but not too bad. If you are intrested in this kind of thing, there are a few places to find aftermarket parts for this car. A web search should bring several up. All in all, my time with this car has been well spent with only a single and inexpensive problem that had me driving a Geo Metro (I still have nightmares from that thing) for a week. I am not sorry I bought the car at all.
99 Cougar V6
Great car, fun to drive and sporty. Great for commuting and pleasure driving. No problems.
Love/hate relationship
This Cougar was a great design- different enough to hold some stylistic ground with the only other daring design of that time the Audi TT. I still love the it and get compliments often. I'm also still impressed with it's material fit & finish which are far beyond most. It has been a reliable car on many road trips and in the daily commute. Similar problems of engine light, cupholder, defroster grill, etc. Pricey repairs with pwr locks going out at 50k for a cool $600. Brakes lasted til 54k, alt/batt to 58k and tires to 30k. Some engine issues popping up which have me worried but still a darn reliable car that's fun to drive.
Overall Good Car
Ive put 10000 miles on my car in 5 mos. Im in the military so I drive a long distance from home and base. I have experienced no engine problems, besides the fact the check engine light is almost always on.The electrical part is another story. The driver side window goes down but not up, and the doors lock automatically sometimes. Otherwise it drives great, runs excellent, and looks really nice. This car in my overall opinion is its a good car with typical car repairs. The car runs very well over long distances. I did buy it with a warranty so its all covered anyways.
I love the Cougar!!!!
I absolutely love this car! It's everything I ever wanted and it's affordable!
Could be better
My car is a 1999. It was a year old when I purchased it. This car has been in the repair shop 9 times in the past 12 months. Everything from catalytic converter, fuel line problems, emission system problems and I had to replace the transmission at 52,000 miles. It's in the shop as I type this. This time for an engine oil leak. As far as looks, the car is great. The interior has a blind spot on the passenger side. I would not recommend this car. As soon as my car is repaired, I'm trading it in.
First Ford, I mean Mercury
A fantastic Car. Been nearly a year since I bought it. Only expenses have been gas and oil. Great on long drives, sporty get up and go, and a head turner in all ways. Only real con for me, gas mileage not as high as I would like it ( 35 per canadian gallon or about 28 per US gallon), but that could be due to my heavy right foot.
Great car
This vehicle has served us well. We really love the look and it drives well. The v4 doesn't "pick up" too quickly, and it's not comfortable for driving long distances, but that's not what it's made for. It rides very smooth, and hasn't given us a minute's trouble.
Love this car
I bought this car as my second vehicle when i was 17. I have now had it for over a year and i love the car. it has more power than i expected from a small car. it gets me where i want to go without any problems. Since i got the car i have only had to make some minor repairs. New tires, and i had to replace the rear bearings on the driver side. good sound system. lots of comfort in the front. the back is slightly crammed but the bucket seats are fun to sit in. overall i would recommend this car.
I LOVED BOTH OF MINE
This is my 2nd Cougar. I totaled out my first one and walked away with just a few bumps and scrapes. Then I bought another one just the same but a different color. Then a month later some stupid guy in a truck hit me from behind going 55 mph. Totaled that one out too and walked I away just a little shook up. I still have the second car...I had get if fixed. This car is very safe...I'm still ALIVE. I loved both of my cougars but now mine in for sale. The only probably I have had with my car is two days ago my alternator went at 88,000 miles.
This is an excellent vehicle!!!
I bought this vehicle to be my college vehicle and I have been more than satisfied. The handling is great. It is a sporty vehicle but isn't considered a sports car making your insurance cheaper than a "sports car". I've driven this vehicle for 4 years now and had no major problems with it and I recommend it to anyone.
Awesome Car
I bought this car used with 108,000 miles on it...my '99 Sable had just crapped out with 220,000 on it so i figured another Mercury would do me good for getting back and forth to college. I now have 139,000 on it and have never had a problem. It has plenty of power except for a dull spot from 3-4000 rpms, then at 4000 she gets up and goes...its the 4 speed auto and it will do 115 in third gear at 6000 rpms...which from a 175 horse v6, is pretty impressive. Another thing is the gas mileage. I get 33mpg on a trip if I drive reasonably. Put your foot in the gas and it drops to about 24.
THIS CAR IS THE BOMB
THIS VEHICLE HAS THE BEST STYLING, THE BEST FUN RATING TO DRIVE, PLUS I THINK HONDAS SUCK.
great
Nice car - a little small for anyone over 6 foot tall.
pain in the wallet
I was dating my future wife who wanted to buy a chrysler, but i talked her out of it, I wish she had not listened to me. I never thought of myself as a mechanic but thanks to this car I have learned alot about fixing cars(repairs are so expesive that i could not afford to have the dealer do them). To say that I don't like this car is an understatment. I feel that ford should be ashamed for even putting this car on the market. When I called ford about the electrical problem, they gave me the sorry about your luck speach.
Sold it, want it back!
I bought this car early on in the production run, so I will admit, it had its problems. Starter, trunk release, and defective tires were my biggest complaints - however the performance of the car made up for any problems. With some small modifications, it had just as much power as the new model, and could outrun most other cars on the highway.
Love it and Hate it
Bought at 36,000, needed new brakes. Then check engine light has been on since about 45,000 and it now has 81,000 miles on it. I don't think there is anything wrong though, probably just electrical short. Did need alternator replaced at about 70,000 miles, and my rims warped very easily causing tires to wear down quicker than usual. Rough ride at times, but once speed is picked up, it's pretty smooth. My alarm, however, randomly activates, so I have taken out the fuse so it will not. Thus, w/o that fuse, I am unable to use the power locks and trunk door release until it is repaired.
Is that a Jag your drving?
Well dispite no one ever knowing what a Mercury Cougar is, they always seem to love it once they see it. The design is great, the interior confortable. The storage with this hatch is amazing, just last week I took home a 7 foot long storage unit, and had the hatch shut. The car is a Ford so it does suffer from lots of creeks and rattles, though reliablilty has so far been good. Power is supprizingly sporty despite the slow 0- 60 time. I think its very fun to drive, main complaints being a lousy auto tranny and a large amount of body roll with spirited cornering. I highly suggest this car to those who are looking.
Love it, BUT..........................
Car performs nicely and serves many purposes courtesy of the fold down rear seats. Encountered too many nickel and dime repairs, recalls, tweaks over 4 years, not to mention a problem with the Cat conv that I had to fight with Ford to have covered under warranty. Several electrical problems alternator, wiring harness, battery from year one to 2003
Fun to Drive
I've had my Cougar for 3 years now and I have had only one problem. In its 3rd year, the cables on the sunroof snapped during normal operation. The dealer says "We have to replace the whole sunroof so it'll cost ya $$$." A private mechanic says "I'll get some new cables and we'll have it repaired for about $$." Maybe I have more of a gripe with Ford? Other than the sunroof, I have not had one single second worth of problem out of the car. It drives great, it's as comfortable as a sports coupe gets, and it's a fun car. My only other gripe is that since it looks fast, all kinds of other cars want to race it... maybe their jealous of it's tight appearance?
EYE CATCHER
BEEN A FUN CAR WITH NO PROBLEMS
99 Cougar
This car is great to drive. I love it. It is so fun to drive and it has plenty of room. Everything is easily accessible and the sound system is great. No complaints.
Wonderful Car!!!
I bought this car two years ago and I couldn't be happier. It has been regularly maintained, had some minor service and hasn't ever let me down. The power is great. The sound system is great. Traction is wonderful. Low body roll. Very responsive ride. It has 67000 miles on it so far and has been an all around great car!
I LOVE MY CAR - No problems in 5 years
I bought the car new and haven't had to replace anything but gas, oil, coolent, tires and window switches. I figure if the only surprise after 80K miles was the two window switches on the driver side, I'm in good shape. I've taken it on numerous road trips and it's my daily driver.
Black Cat
The cougar is a nice looking car. It handles and rides well, but is underpowered, and overmatched by little japanese 4-cylinders. Of all Sport coupes, this is probably the nicest and more of a nice sporty car to cruise in.
The perfect car
I bought this car for my wife and we have driven it everywhere. We drove it to and from the state of Washington and Oklahoma. You want a great gas car that looks good this is your car.
too much
This is a great car but too much money. i saw a car the same car model and year for 6,995. If you ask me you need to lower the price.
Pleasure to Own
Roxy as I like to call her, was mine preowned at 22,000 miles in 2002, now with 67000, there is no end in sight. No you will be winning any drag races with the Cougar, but it can throw you can in your seat when in the mid RPM-band. Plenty of leg from for driver, I am 6-2 and I could not drive if seat was all the way back. Backseats are buckets, neat to sit in, hard to get out of, and hatchback provide low headroom, I still love them. Have gotten over 35 MPG on the highway. Not taxing around city either, probably 27 or 28 with built in MPG calc. Have replaced fuel pump, a few fuses, trunk actuators. Great sound, no blown speakers. No broken head or tail lights after 67000.
Cougar get an A+
I have had my cougar for around a month now, and it is great. It is a very fun car to drive (it's a v6 5speed). Its definately got nut when you want it to. The back deats are real comfortable, big trunk. If the backseats are folded, it's bigger than my bed. The only thing I do not like about the car is the center console, it's kind of a pain. Other than that, it's all good.
fun car
great car.. a lot of fun.. ive had absolutely 0 problems
BAD CAR breaks down monthly
I have owned my cougar since 1999 and it has low miles but there is ALWAYS something wrong with it- engine light coming on for months, then breaks, then had to have switch on LIGHTS for 300 some $$ then broke down twice on vacation overheating and was towed for electrical problems again when we wanted to drive to Fla.! This thing's a BAD CAR.
Beware of this LEMON!!!
I've had my Cougar for 3 years and have spent close to $5000 in repairs (numerous calls to Ford customer service for financial assistance were completely blown off). My radio has gone out three times and the last time burnt through the left channel destroying the entire system. I couldn't stomach the $600 to replace it so I go without. I have had so many problems with this vehicle I can't list them all. Both power window regulators, alternator, catalytic converter, wheel bearings, starter, power hatch release, radio, sensors, etc. I've never been more dissatisfied with a car. Save yourself! Don't buy this car!
Lemon!!!
This is the worst car ever!!! In the two years since I purchased the vehicle I have had it in the shop 6 times for stalling or not starting. I have problems with my windows leaking. The interior construction is a mess. Shortly after purchase, the upholstry in the back seat starting coming up. And don't get me started on the worthless cup holder that has spilled more drinks than it has supported. Also the interior lights have had shorts since purchase. Other than the cute body style I don't have anything positive to say!
It is a perfect car! i love it!
i thought it us a great car!
Sporty Value
For once American styling surpassed Japan (in this price range anyway). Considered the Toyota Celica but the cougars' lines flow better. Got all the bells and whistles (leather, sunroof, CD, Chrome wheels) makes the car much more enjoyable in the long run.
GREAT CAR FOR THE MONEY
Those of you who are considering should feel comfortable buying this sleek model coupe. I have highly enjoyed my experience. My only advice would be to make sure that the electronics and braking systems are in good shape. I have not had any real problems with mine, but I have heard of a few.
googd one
good car had fun... no problems none
1999 Cougar
Tight suspension, well built, good pick up
Can you beat this?
Can you beat this? Buyers beware. Some have no problems while other have tons. V6 Automatic with 56K miles on it. Part x Replacement Times ----------------------- Altenator x 6 Flywheel x 1 (flexplate in ATX) Brakes Rotors x 1 (Bought aftermarket @ over $500) Brake Pads x 1 (bought aftermarket) Hood Latch Cable x 2 Center console x 1 (still broke) Trunk x1 (fixed self after 2nd time) Radiator hoses replaced x 1 A/C fixed x 1 Weather stripping x 2 (still messed up) Wheel bearing x 1 Defrost vent pops up. Transmission started slipping at 28K and is now slipping nicely at 56K. Alarm still randomly goes off for no reason
what a junk
ive had my cougar for a while now and till this day it gives me problems. the second day i bought i took it through a car wash and the side mirror broke. and ive had problems with the engine too. i dont think that car is worth $23,000 thats how much i paid for it cuz it was a special edition but man its not worth it at all that why my ex drives it now cuz just like the car hes not worth it.
Very fun to drive
I love this car. It is incredibly fun to drive, and has a lot of power to it. So far it has also been very reliable. It is fun and sporty looking, and really hugs corners. I would reccommend this car.
Best of Mercury
The Cougar was the first car Ive ever bought. It has overall been a good investment. It has good pick up speed, and in my opinion is a comfortable car. Other people have said this car has given them all sorts of problems but mine have been minor, typical car repairs. If your looking for a sports car at a low price, the Cougar is it. Too bad they quit making them. My problems were my driver side window, it will roll down, not up. My check engine light is always on, and ofcourse the infamous cup holder rarely works. It is wise to purchase a warranty, as with any car. I have and that window was a little expensive.
Not a Ford man but I like my Cougar.
Bought with Sport Package option which means the 16" tires, V-6, sport cloth interior, fog lights, spoiler, rear wiper and 4-wheel disc brakes. This car also came with ABS, auto, and traction control. We have had it for 5000 miles and have yet to put a dime into it. The road noise was a bit much but I switch from the Firehawk tires to Dunlop SP Sport A2s and it is extremely quiet now. The windows tend to creak but this is because they don't have a window frame.
Save your money
Don't even waste your money on this LEMON. I have had the car for 5 months now and i have had nothing but problems. The car has been in the shop 6 times already. Everything from the hood and trunk release, sun roof, engine, emission sensors, and the list could go on. I will never buy another Mecury, not to mention that the dealership has been a real pain in the kneck.
