We've had ours since June 8. After 8 days, the Check Engine light went on. Land Rover then had the car for 9 days The dealer determined that three mechanical faults set the light off, but the mechanical faults were non-existent; it must have been a software issue that caused the light to come on. Land Rover (the dealer, in consultation with engineers from Land Rover USA on the east coast and Land Rover England) cleared the Check Engine light but never determined what software issue set it off in the first place. We then got the car back, Land Rover having had it for a longer period of time than we did. About a week later, Sirius went out. It comes in and out intermittently, and we have an appointment to have that fixed, but we can't get in to the dealer until the end of July. While waiting for that appointment, the Check Engine light came on again. I'm anticipating another long stint with a loaner. We love the car reliability issues aside, but those reliability issues are quickly moving it into Lemon Law land.

Let's start about this vehicle. Looked great I bought it then first week I had issues with the Infotainment not working and no sound coming out. I called dealer and they said a software update is needed. Month 2 same issues now the rear door seals come undone and air coming in door while driving as it is not properly sealed. I take the vehicle to dealer and they tell me its a design flaw and they are going to try and correct. Month 3 Ac unit not working take it back in Land rover tells me that the ac hose has a leak in it and they are going to replace it including another update to the software system. Month 6 emergency steering and braking system not working light comes on as well as coolant level low light. Also car dies on me at stop light and won't move while in drive, Have to restart and almost get rear ended. Dash & infotainment go out at night while driving on highway and turn back on a minute later. Month 7 Take to dealer they keep it for over 10 days Infotainment going out while driving, car taking a while to accelerate, car still shutting off while in gear and dropped it off at landcover dealer again and they give it back saying it was a software issue and also putting double sided tape to hold on rear seals on door. Drove vehicle home had for 1 week same issues car died again at intersection wife & daughter almost get rear ended took the vehicle back again and yet to get any calls from land rover. . I filed a case in April 26,2021 with Land Rover I have yet to hear from anyone regarding these issues of car being a lemon. I was told first that someone was reviewing my case then heard today no one has even looked at my case. I have made several attempts and yet get no responses. This vehicle has safety issues and they need to address it.

Not so great .. full of glitches

I’ve spent a small fortune on this car Less than 200 miles in and the “low battery” alarm popped up and the car wouldn’t start. The car was taken to the dealer to find out after 2 weeks that there’s a faulty module (for the central screen) that keeps draining the battery The car drove fine for a while .. then it happened again .. this time they said it was the battery And now it happened again (car won’t start with low battery alarm) The car has 4K miles on it in 5 months and I love it But if you buy it then be prepared to spend a significant amount of your time driving a loaner

Great car; too bad they can't build it

My 2020 Defender HSE was delivered in October 2020 and I immediately had issues. Within the first week I had a coolant warning issue, low battery issue multiple times and, best of all, windshield wipers that would not turn on. Yes, I have a video of the wiper incident but LR has told me they don't need to see it. I never took the car in hoping that the monthly (and they do appear to be monthly) software updates will address all these issues. Then it got worse. Now the car shuts off while driving and I lose all throttle response. Fortunately it restarts, but it is pretty dangerous. I was at a red light last week and the car died as I pulled into the intersection. Engine warning light always comes on as and when the engine shuts off. So, I did take it in for this issue and they have had the car for over a week and can't fix it. They decided yesterday to replace the Powertrain Control Module but they can't get the part for 2 months. No guarantees that the PCM replacement will fix the issue. Other issues: flashing map on the instrument cluster when you advance a song, inability of the car to detect the key even when it is in the car, button on the door handle does not unlock the vehicle (probably related to the inability to detect the key), remote start from the App does not start the engine, auto high beams do not function and when I turn the feature back on in settings it turns off in seconds. I could go on but what is the point really. On the plus side I actually do really like the car. The interior is very well designed and functional. My labs love the rear for our journeys, though I did have to buy the ramp for the older one as it is a bit of a jump for her now. The car is great in deep sand and I was astonished that I did not have to air down with the off road tires at 47 and 50 lbs of pressure. Highway manners are surprisingly good. The car feels heavy and planted which I kind of like. So, great car, but JLR so far can't build it. I really wish they waited and got this car right rather than rush to release it. Right now it is only serving to reinforce JLR's poor reputation for reliability. And the dealer is not communicating at all and they have me driving a loaner. I told them that I would not drive a loaner for the next 2.5 months but no word back. I called JLR USA and opened a case today and they were frankly pretty rude. Also checked my state's Lemon Laws. My recommendation to anyone considering this vehicle is to avoid it. It is just not worth the trouble and both the dealer and JLR are making this worse by not communicating. Perhaps it gets better in subsequent model years - and I hope it does - but right now you are taking a big risk. I found myself building Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro's and Ford Ranger Tremor's yesterday. I'd suggest you do the same.

I bought it in June 2020, I had it one week and off to the shop it went. 59 days later I get it back. Stereo, phone and dash panel don’t work, now we are in August have it back for now two weeks. Total of 350 miles on it, now the wire harness needs to be replaced, new master panel and display. Ok get it back in October yes October! Going smooth so far. November back to the shop needs update and has to have it forced. Now December and well now it likes to park it self while in motion and turns off not once but twice. Not to mention it did it to another defender owner only they were going down the interstate. 2021 you think ok this at some time it’s going to be fixed, nope phone, cameras and stereo work when it wants to.. just frustrating I spent all this money and it’s a lemon in Land Rover clothing. Love the car but completely disappointed. UPDATE...... Car back to the shop newest problem snow covered roads the emergency lane assist comes on and pulls you into on coming traffic. Just got my service records and it’s been in the shop for a total of 140 days kicker is I have had the car for 8 months.. recommended to not buy this car they should recall the entire line.

it is always a great design for these cars, always been very attractive vehicles and a lot of charm around it. we have our Defender HSE P400 for about two months drove less that 2000 miles. very comfortable front and rear seats. lots of space in the second row seat. i would have expected a better access to the trunk, the door is quite small if you need to load a long box or luggage. it could have been a bit more spacious without having to sacrifice the back seat leg space, by sliding the bench forward. the visibility is not the best you are quite sunken in, you would expect bigger windows from a Rover. the alpine windows are purely esthetic. the third row seat is very sacrificed. nothing like LR4 ... probably i wouldn’t order them if i saw them before ordering it. acceleration lag. i would say close to two second dely and then all in a sudden power kicks in and you are propelled forward abruptly. passengers are not happy , the driver at least can hold the steering wheel. our car has several issues .... adaptive cruise control sat radio touch screen lane keep adjust energy saving stop start sunroof all are either not working or working intermittently, very annoying. the brakes if applied too sharply have a bad noise and vibrate thru the pedal, not a good feeling... the interior trim of one door feel off and some trim in the trunk were installed half way and are very cheap and light plastic, especially for a car that should be “rugged” i would have hoped for better materials. the worse of all is costumer service. i think they are always busy because rover have tons of issues, not a surprise. I had several...The company wants to be in the luxury sector and has a great appeal but definitely not at the audi / mercedes quality. i spent several hours for several days to have an appointment that than was never scheduled and i only found out the day before the appointment only because i called to confirm. usually takes 3 weeks where i am to have an appointment... sound crazy but this is my experience. now i am 1 and 1/2 month into this process.... not sure i am happy about this car... my 2004 discovery has less problem and at least the door don’t squeak even after 100K miles ... the door in the defender are quite loud ... again could be a bit better quality it’s new car we would expect some issues but i can’t be a happy costumer so 2 stars are as much i can give..

I have had mine for 3 weeks and the check engine light came on. Also the acceleration lag is going to result in some serious accidents, possible deaths. The engineers should be fired.

I bought the 2020 Defender HSE, Pangea Green with White roof and Country package in September. Pretty much fully loaded. I already have 3500 miles on it. The car drives great. Plenty of power, good visibility and very comfortable. However, I've had numerous repeat problems. 1- noise from the right front pillar at speeds over 60 mph. There is a service bulletin on this but no fix yet. 2- the radio system went out. Dealer installed new software. So far so good. 3- Frequent warning message "Emergency Braking and Emergency Steering Not Available"; 4- Occasional message "Cruise Control Not available"; 5- Auto Dimming not working (after one visit to dealer for repair) and continues. I think some of this is to be expected on the first year of a new generation car. But, I'd expect a lot more from LR and RR. I suspect this is becoming a dealer service nightmare as my dealer said they are seeing a lot of this.

I've had my Defender for 15 months and 16000 miles. No mechanical issues whatsoever. Minimal software glitches that are easily reset like turning your phone on and off when it acts up. It's comfortable, functional, and has great aesthetics. My biggest problem is that I keep finding more additions to keep spending on... roof rack, ladder, mud flaps, etc. I take it off-roading as well use it as my daily driver, and I couldn't be happier.

Ive had me 110 SE for 2 months 5500 miles for construction site visits. Already used the roof rack to haul a farm gate Quick smooth and agile. A couple problems: the passenger door pillar made a lot of noise. They fixed it. Audio went out for a while but eventually came back. The DTE gage stopped working. I have to hold remote key fob right at door handle to unlock door. Shirting into reverse from sport is very complex. You must shift into drive from sport before you can reverse. Complex. Audio, climate and nav are vert hard to operate. Very clumsy after driving MB

Don’t give in to the “coolness” factor

I was so excited for the new LR Defender to be launched. I purchased a new 2020 Defender S with lots of added features. The car itself is pretty jaw dropping when you first see it. It’s a big car, with impressive technology and a “cool” interior. Once you drive the car for a couple thousand miles the appeal starts to wear off. It’s too big to go into many parking garages, the heated windshield doesn’t work, the fabric material on the seats was losing its color, and the pivi pro system is constantly showing imperfections. At first the ride seems impressive, but then the “clunkiness”of the car really started to bother me. It drives like a school bus around corners. It also gets a whopping 10-12mpg city and the best I ever got on highway was 20mph but I’d say average was 17-18mph highway. The car itself wasn’t the only problem, LR service centers are absolutely horrendous to deal with. I was always told LR has terrible service but decided to gamble anyway and buy the car. They scratched my car several times when it went to the shop and had to send it to detailing. They also took days to resolve issues that should just take an hour or two. They don’t have any loaners so you have to pay for a rental car if they have your car for over 24 hours… ridiculous service. I would never recommend Land Rover/Range Rover to anyone. Stay away from the Defender until they get the kinks figured out (which may be never considering the amount of issues I’m seeing on forums). If you have interest in buying this car please do yourself a favor and join forums on Facebook - you will see just how poorly made this car is by all the problems people are reporting.

The vehicles I tested drove rode smoothly, looked great and caught my attention. The deal went well and off we were. A quarter of the way home error messages for emergency braking and cruise control went off. The cruise control was inoperable. This has been going on intermittently. The dealer has had the car several days, no news on how to fix. They discovered an oil leak while it was there. Um, now I'm quickly losing confidence in my new vehicle. UPDATE after 2 separate one week visits with the dealer and several failed efforts they were finally able to iron out the issues and the car is working perfectly. After 2000 miles the Defender is a beast. We've had tons go snow and horrible cold here in WI. LIKES - snappy engine performance, snow and ice performance, camera system is sublime. DISLIKES - there is wind noise when traveling 70 and above.

Looks great, but is built with typical Land Rover glitches. My beautiful white HSE went back twice, was without it for a week both times. Engine warning light still not fully resolved. I should know better having imported a 90 and driven that for years, but expected more with the price tag and promises of the new model. Friends say I should buy a Toyota/Lexus instead, but I’m resisting!

Love it... but mine has a glitch

I pretty much love everything about the Defender. I’ve had it for 10 days, put 700 miles on it, have driven on everything from interstates to off road, have taken five 10-year-olds on a field trip, and have towed our 4000 lb camper. It’s been great in every element it’s been in so far and is surprisingly smooth while doing it. However, I’ve found the glitch (all Land Rovers have at least one, I suppose). The center row climate controls don’t work. It’s going into the dealer next week to see if they can figure it out. Fortunately, our local LR dealership will pick it up and give me a loaner until it’s fixed. Otherwise, it’s amazing. I ordered a lower spec model, and I’m surprised by the features I keep finding. Not only do I like it, but my wife and kids like it too and aren’t embarrassed by me when I pick them up from school. For the budget my wife gave me (under $65k), I couldn’t think of anything I’d rather have than my Defender. So far, it seems like it can do it all (except blow air in the middle row).

I fully believe you are more likely to find negative reviews of any vehicle. It’s standard human psychology to complain when there is a problem and to say nothing when everything works as expected. As such, I am confident most of the thousands of new Defenders are working fine or at least well enough that their owners are not posting about glitches. That being said, here is my story. Took delivery of my 2020 in September 20. Had no issues requiring return to the dealer for 9 months and 10K miles of daily driving. Like many others, my issue is electrical. As an aside, this is my third land rover and I have somehow avoided major electrical gremlins in the past. My 01 discovery is still running great. Anyway, the issue can develop when the vehicle is driven for at least two hours and is restarted after a short stop. Upon restart, the lower controls (which control ventilation and air-conditioning among other things) and the door controls do not work. As a result the cabin has no ventilation whatsoever and the windows won’t roll down! Since it only occurs on longer trips, I am more than likely far from home when it happens. Most recently I was on a family trip with children and pets on a 90° plus day well over 100 miles from home with hours further to drive. The closest Land Rover dealer (which is the only one the warranty will tow you) told me they could not see me for over a month! My particular problem goes away if you allow the vehicle to sit turned off for over an hour, presumably allowing the bad component to cool. But that is clearly not a viable option on long trips. Worst, it does not happen every time. To date it is only happened twice but when it does, it’s a biggie. The vehicle is currently in my local dealer where it has been for about a week and a half as JLR engineers speculate on the issue. I had purchased this vehicle to actually use it for overlanding as it is supposedly intended and was to take it on a 5,000 mile trip next month. Who knows if I’ll even have a vehicle back by then or if the engineers will be able to correctly diagnose what the issue is. There was no one more excited about this vehicle than me. I was one of the first to order, which I knew was a gamble. In every other regard it’s a wonderful vehicle and extremely capable. But if you can’t reliably get air to breath inside the cabin, it’s essentially useless.

We've had ours since November (4 months) and it has been flawless. It's quiet and smooth on the road. Tows with confidence, and it's absolutely incredible off road. There's not another vehicle for the money as well rounded. We also considered the Land Cruiser, but this vehicle seems to be better in every measurement important to us. We have now owned this vehicle for almost 3 years now and we're absolutely in love. This truck does everything well and looks great doing it. I debated the satin protective film, and may should have ordered the vehicle that way. We do have a nice pin stripe down the passenger side, but then it's a defender we didn't buy it not to use it. Not sure why, but I received an email asking to update my review. It's been 3 1/2 years and we're still in love with this amazing go anywhere truck. It's at home on road, off road, towing, It is the one truck that does it all.

Shockingly poor engineering and problematic infotainment system. Wind noise is terrible! Errors all over the infotainment system. Low coolant on main console. Several door rattle. Poor build quality and stiff ride. Avoid this vehicle.

I've had my 2020 Defender HSE for a month now and it's been great so far! It has a great balance of being true to it's utilitarian side but also has great features and is so well designed. It's been my favorite care I've owned so far! 3/8/22: I've been a LR fan since I was young (owning two older Discovery's), even sold them for years while in college. I was honestly skeptical when the new Defender was released. It's a complex car, didn't seem as rugged or simplistic as the original/I've always been somewhat of a purist (love the LR4 but not a fan of the new discovery, the sport, or the RR Evoque), and I'm fully aware of the reputation of some past (and current) LR models. I did my research and decided to roll the dice and lease one after test driving. I was really hooked from there, it's just so unique and really unlike anything I've driven. I'm constantly impressed by the interior, it's so intuitive and well designed (e.g. small things like the volume knob for the speakers is positioned for the passenger to easily adjust, tons of storage everywhere, beverage mini fridge, simplicity and cleanliness of the dash buttons - not a complex mess like so many other cars), everything is where it should be and well thought out. After 15 months in, my 2020 Defender 110 HSE has been pretty much flawless since it was delivered. I haven't had any major problems with it besides a few minor glitches with the Infotainment system which were all resolved via "over wire" software updates, and it's been working just fine for the past 6 months. Over wire updates are pretty great, esp. considering they release new features through it without having to go to the dealership (e.g. Alexa, bluetooth Apple CarPlay (instead of wired), map updates, etc.). Also, I only have to bring it in once for service/oil change during my 3-year lease - 2 years or 20,000 miles, that's crazy. My only complaints honestly are I wish I had the premium sound system (base Meridian isn't the best out there), I wish there was more legroom in the 3rd row, I wish we could get the diesel hybrid in the U.S. (better gas mileage) and I wish the middle seats would fold all the way flat if you have the third row (this is possible in LR4s) - ideal for car camping. Despite these small gripes, I'm definitely planning to purchase the truck after my lease ends. Also, you often hear from the handful of people for anything really that seem to have lemons or early build issues or problem cars. Can only share my experience, and I have a friend who also purchased a 2021 defender 110 last year and has also had zero issues with it and loves it.

I have a first edition p400. I love the power and how it drives. Taken it to many offroad trails and even installed 35" tires. I drive it a lot. 17k miles in one year and no real issues. Its a 2020 so some glitches were expected. All has been taken care of with updates which were dumb little stuff. Shouldn't be an issue with the latest models.

Everything's been patched since I bought the car 1.5 years ago. Great vehicle, it's a blast off road and has great pick up on the highways. Love going car camping and skiing with it too (wouldn't recommend getting the full leather)

We love our brand new 2020 Defender. Potential buyers should be aware though that most parts are unavailable currently in the USA and delayed supply chains for this model mean we are still waiting for a $1100 tail light cover (no comment) that someone cracked while we were parked at our local supermarket. 30 days have passed and no part in sight. According to our dealer locally, Land Rover is using all available parts to build new Defenders and not releasing any parts to existing customers and no word on when that will ease. My car is two months old and they knew of this problem when we bought it. If they had informed me of same, I would have made our 70K cash purchase with a brand that can support its loyal customers.

I have had my Defender 110 for about 7 months and have put on 11,000 miles with no issues. The only slight hiccup I had was with a sunroof that wouldn't open, but the dealer walked me through a reset that took 30 seconds to fix. It is a great rugged vehicle, I take my 80 pound dog everywhere and the interior has held up well even with lots of mud and dirt. Very easy to clean. I have taken on some mild trails and lots of mud in Vermont and always performs. I am very happy with the purchase at this point.

Beware Land Rover's thinner windshields. In 40 years of driving never before did I have to replace a windshield. In my Defender I've owned since Sept. 2020 I'm about to replace a windshield for a 3rd time, despite no offroading or gravel roads; all suburban and highway driving. LR knows this is a problem but they refuse to address it.

Seems like the negative reviews dominate here, maybe because all the other Defender owners are out exploring in their vehicles. I’ve put some hard miles on ours, some off road, thousands of miles of towing, harsh winter storms, beaches, etc and not one problem. On road manners are better than any other 4wd I’ve ever driven by far, and off road, this thing is a beast. If you want refined off roading British style, this is the best thing ever.

Before the actual launch I was not a fan of the exterior, mainly the front end. I went to check one out in person and it looks great! The interior is sleek and modern. The materials used are more for durability and comfort. It is not cheap plastic inside but a mix of cloth, leather, metal and a soft rubber. The 400 hp & torque engine does an excellent job of moving this 5,000 pound beast. The ZF 8-speed transmission handles the power well with smooth shifts. I have not experienced any acceleration lag as I have with other turbos; the supercharger and mild hybrid system probably help offset any turbo lag. The brakes are large and do a good job of stopping the Defender quickly. The on-road ride is smooth even with the factory all terrain tires. The sound proofing is very good. Visibility is good all around. The rear mirror with back camera view works well when the rear storage area is full. The infotainment/navigation system is clean, easy to use and responsive. The front and rear seat legroom is great. The third row legroom is very, very tight. Made for kids only. You can move second row forward for some additional third row room if needed. Headroom is great in all rows. In summary, the looks and performance are much better than expected and I am very happy with this purchase. With that said, I do realize it is a Land Rover and the first year for this model so I assume some bugs may pop up along the way. But after test driving one and reading the positive online reviews, I didn’t want to wait another year or two.

I received my First Edition Defender in June and I couldn't be happier! 6,000k miles so far including a road trip to Colorado. Of course there are some bugs as with a brand new land rover model, but that is to be expected. I've owned Land Rovers for a long time and have not been happy with the designs of recent models and lackluster performance of everything that isn't the supercharged 5.0 V8. I have 2016 LR4 Landmark edition, which I kept when we purchased the Defender. If you are an LR4 fan and did not like the discovery replacement, the Defender is probably for you--in fact I think I could survive without my LR4 now that I have the Defender. The 400hp engine is very impressive. None of that delay that all of the recent rovers seem to have when you step on the gas. This thing is surprisingly fast, faster than it needs to be and I love it. The brakes seem very sensitive at first but you get used to them and they can stop this thing on a dime. Quick off the line, effortless passing, and very rarely downshifts even on pretty steep inclines. The Defender has more cabin room for the front and second row. Storage cubbies are everywhere in the front, the second row will slide forward and back, recline a little, and there is plenty of leg and head room--which sacrifices cargo space compared to the LR4. However, the seats all fold completely flat without any holes or gaps for dog paws to get stuck in, and the back is covered with a diamond plated rubbery material so it's like a built in cargo liner. The third row itself is a joke unless you don't have legs. The 3rd row climate control is really nice for the dogs and they have some awesome pet accessories that are very well thought out including the quilted cargo liner that has a flap that folds down to protect the bumper as they jump in/out. You have the commanding Land Rover view from the front and sides, but rear visibility is poor and the camera rear-view is a lifesaver. The ride is surprising smooth and quiet, even with the Wrangler off road tires. I wondered if the sound insulation would be as good since there is exposed metal on the doors which you don't see with other rovers but it as quiet inside as any. Overall the vehicle feels very solid like you could run over or through anything. Interior materials are very durable seeming and nice to the touch, less plastic and more rubber. Not a lot of leather but I think the seats are a little softer and more comfortable. Really enjoy not having carpet. All of the controls are intuitive and easy to use. I really like the navigation system and ability to put it on the dash, easiest directions to follow that I've used. Of course it has awesome off road capability even sensing the water wade depth ahead of you. Really cool looking truck, gets lots of attention everywhere we take it and have only seen 1 other one on the road so far, I don't know how many of these made it to the states for the 2020 model year but I guess not many. If you like a unique and fun to drive SUV with unlimited capability, the Defender is for you. Now I'm trying to convince my wife to trade her RR Sport for an x edition defender next year...

As a Defender owner, I can say this SUV is amazing. I love the air suspension when you need the vehicle a littler lower (or higher) makes getting into parking garages a breeze. The interior is well made and durable. You have to pay for some of the tech features but they are well worth it. We use the vehicle to tow 5-6000 pounds and it has plenty of power. Have had the vehicle going on 3 years now, lots of rough play and never an issue. The car has never left us stranded or needed to be in the shop other than routine maintenance. For all those with broken windshields - maybe don’t drive so close to other vehicles on the road.

Generally, I've liked my 2020 Defender 110. Sure the communication system is not intuitive and a hassle to try to use but the vehicle drives well. However, Land Rover does not support the Defender so if you have a minor accident as I did, there are no parts available and no eta on when parts may be available. This is insane. Only purchase a Defender if you are sure you will never need parts for it.
