Hello K5, Goodbye Accord

After driving a Civic EX for 4 years and upgrading to an Accord Coupe, the K5 was a huge leap! When I arrived at the dealership and they saw I was looking to trade my Accord they seemed a bit surprised. They were also very eager to bring me to the Kia side! Truth be told, I had some serious reservations as the Kia had always been a "throw away car". I certainly hadn't set my expectations too high as I arrived at the dealer. I went in knowing I wanted to look at the K5 GT Line in Passion Red. After a rather lengthy test drive on all different types of roadways I had to eat crow. The K5 was a game changer. I was sold! I asked to look at the Stinger and the K5 EX but much to my surprise the K5 GT Line was much more appealing overall. As I finalized the purchase I was informed that I buying the first K5 GT Line. And almost 6 weeks later I have yet to see any K5 driving around. It's actually nice to pull up to a stop light and not be one of the 8 Accords at the intersection. The K5 truly turns heads as everyone is trying to figure out what it is. I have been approached several times by people asking "is that really a Kia???" As for the car itself, the amount of options for the price point is incredible. Overall, the car is a great ride. Rides smooth at any speed, easy to handle, exceptional acceleration especially in the sport mode, the seats are both comfortable and offer great support. The instrument cluster flows beautifully and the cockpit design with the 8 inch display angled slightly towards the driver is perfect. Very well thought out. The knobs on the stereo and the climate control are solid and an ideal size. The touchscreen is very reactive and easy to navigate. The wireless Apple Car Play is a HUGE plus. The flat bottom steering wheel is strange at first but easy to control. The steering wheel is a nice size and thickness with a nice smooth leather surface. All of the driver assistance features are easily customizable from a button on the steering wheel. The keyless entry is very user friendly. The remote start with the climate setting is a huge plus for the car! As for the appearance from the outside, the car gives the appearance of a hatchback with a huge trunk. The floating roof line really defines the car. The passion red color is brilliant and rich looking without being overly bright. It's a very distinct color. The headlights and fog lights are stylish and very functional. The lighting bolt design front turn signals stand out from all others. The rear LED lights across the entire trunk deck add a stylish and sophisticated touch. The concealed faux dual outlet exhaust also adds uniqueness to the car. The black wheels compliment the Passion Red so nicely. A few cons to the car, the approach lights in the door handle could be a little brighter. The child safety locks on the rear doors are a bit odd in that they require a key or a screwdriver to engage. The front seats could sit a little lower. The audio system is very weak. Needs a lot of improvement. The gear shifter is plastic when a nice leather wrap would have been better. Almost 6 weeks into the car and the only issue I have had so far is that the trunk will unlatch but not raise to the open position every time. Defeats the purpose of the very convenient automatic trunk on approach. The dealer has agreed to fix it when I take the car for its first service. So overall, the K5 is an incredible car with lots to offer at a very affordable price point. It offers style and sophistication with a unique appearance. It certainly stands out from all the other cookie cutter cars in its class. I am always approached with "I cannot believe you traded a Honda for a Kia!!!" Once they see the car they can better appreciate the switch. And as a Honda owner for many years, I can honestly say that so far I have no complaints about the switch. The Kia is as good, if not even better than the Accord. If this Kia is reliable and holds up for five years as good as the Accord, I may just become a loyal Kia owner. So for anyone in the market for a mid sized sedan the K5 should definitely be on your list to consider. It's certainly worth checking out. You wont be disappointed!!!

The 2021 Kia k5 is indeed a very good looking car.I took the ex k5 for a very good test drive.I own a 2017 optima sxl and it has been a great car.The new k5 looks better is lighter in weight and much quieter interior.Great visibility and fairly comfortable front seats. The ex rode a bit hard but being the first test of this car the tires had 46 lbs of air, so with about 12 lbs less air the ride should be less bouncy. The steering was great and making turns was quick and sporty like. After an enjoyable test ride, there are missing options. no 360 camera on any trim, no heads up display on any trim, although fairly comfortable no real leather on any trim. The 2020 Hyundai Sonata gives better choices in various trims. One note there is a gear shifter in the k5 which I think is a plus.So if one does not care about the extra equipment the Sonata offers the k5 could be a slightly better choice.

Had the pleasure to rent this car and put nearly 1000 miles on it. Seats and seating positions great. Visibility great. Crisp steering. The performance of the engine is incredible. Passing was fun. Car went straight as an arrow in nasty winds. Stereo sounded good. Really a well built car.

Nice Optima upgrade

The car makes rattling noises and squeaking noises all the time, it can get annoying if you let it. upon acceleration the car takes off loud like a mustang GT, maybe its the turbo engine, but it's definitely not refined, smooth or quite like the Optima was. The doors now have this piece of plastic thats raised so that you can pull the door shut, however it digs into the side of your knee while driving unless you stretch you leg all the way out. The pros of this car is the engine is more powerful than the optima and doesn't struggle to move the vehicle. The stereo is great with very nice speakers even in lower trim. the seats are very comfortable, the leather steering wheel gives the car a premium luxury feel...The technology is this car is amazing, I literally had the car drive me home from work using the steering and lane assist. there is the operating system called uvo that has a app for your phone, it allows you to remote start the vehicle, check gas level, check and lock doors, set temperature. the door handles light up as you approach the vehicle, the smart trunk opens automatically when you stand in front of the trunk, the front collision detector sounds if you're getting to close to the vehicle in front of you. there is also a notification sound when the car in front of you pulls off. You have rear traffic sound that alerts you to cross traffic or how close you are backing up to an object. The wireless car charger is not that fast but it does work. it only increases your phone battery 10-15% higher after 30 min of charging under 50% but it charges faster if your phone is above 60% The doors open wider so it's easier to get in and out of. the heated and cooled seats work great and pretty fast. One great surprise is how quickly the engine warms up to heat the car, much appreciated in chicago. After a month of owning my k5 EX the only reason i didnt give it 5 stars is the terrible wind and road noise that comes into the cabin. When I bought the vehicle and got on the highway going home, i thought the salesman left a window open a little, the noise was so loud, i kept pressing the window buttons to make sure none were left ajar. The k5 is much noisier than the prior optima, and i have heard other reviewers mention that also. Other than that I'm pleased with it.

We bought this 2021 K5 in April. Two days later, less than 100 miles on it, the transmission went out and had to be towed back to the dealer. They had the car for 2 weeks, said everything was fine. Today, the car was towed back to the same dealer because the transmission put in 4 months ago has gone out again. Either they used an old transmission in April while telling us it was new, or the transmission for this car is total garbage.

NEW 2021 Kia K5 I leased is already having engine/electrical related issues! 2400 miles in and it already needs to go in for an engine diagnostic on 8/6/21; stopped at a red light and the car had NO pickup/power and RPM’s were pegged at 4500-5000 when I took off from the red light; lights started flashing on the dashboard, etc. Had to glide into the shoulder with my wife and kids in the car to shut the car down and try to see if a restart would help. Restart helped but the fact that the car is BRAND NEW (had 3 miles on it when I leased it) and having these problems already, is NOT a good sign!

I have a K-5 GT wolf gray. Although I love the lock and the color my car has literally been in the shop for over a month. My engine light came on and it turn out to be a faulty ERG valve. The transmission seems like it slips occasionally. The windows don’t roll up smooth. The paint chips easy. The tint doesn’t look like it last very long. I personally think there are other problems that they trying to figure out and won’t tell me.

I my last two cars were 2015 Chrysler 200 limited, and 2016 BMW 528i drive. I went with the Gt line K5. My BMW was my day off car Chrysler 200 my work car. Comparing the three cars to each other. The K5 has no stutter that the Chrysler has and excels a lot smoother. Of course the BMW gets up and go. But for the price I'm happy with the K5. Handing its a grade under the BMW. It has a smoother ride than the Chrysler, and I'd say it's tied with the BMW. There's more back row seating space than both cars. Our new born car seat doesn't hit the front passengers seat. Like it did in the BMW, and Chrysler. The technology in the K5 is pretty nice love the 10 inch screen. The car pretty much drives it self. Adaptive cruise control is sweet, it stops at red lights behind the car infront of you, will go around turns too. I love the Wolf grey, and red interior. The sound systems on par with the BMW. For price you can't go wrong. I know I'm comparing the K5 to a 15k and 58k car. But it's really a sweet ride.

I commute everyday and needed a car thats good on gas, but switches lanes fast. The K5 LXS was perfect for me! Even when its not on sport mode, it accelerates fast, sounds pretty bad ass and its not even the GT. I've had a few cars tail gate me to see what the heck it is lol. Looks amazing and drives fantastic! Good job Kia.

Before purchasing any vehicle make sure it's the one you want. I've searched for months trying to find the right one. Something keep leading me back to a KIA K5, when it came down to it. I finally realized that "this is my vehicle, I have to get it before someone else buys it". I'm in love with all the features, I still have to get used of it! But it's definitely worth it. Very affordable and very sporty looking.

I went for the K5 because of the amazing safety, especially the autonomous braking. I have a 2 year old and safety was the most important feature to me when buying a new car. I wasn't completely sold on it until I was backing out of my parking spot and another car began to pass. The K5 braked for me and held the brakes until the car was out of the view! The over all ride is smooth, and I do a lot of driving. I chose the Gt-Line for the power seats and lumbar support. Even though I have black on black, the remote start does help cool the car down before I get in, and I live in sunny Florida! I have never owned a black car, and I can't say I regret it. Overall, this was the best choice for me. It checked all the major boxes, and it does not disappoint.

Let me say i thought we were only going to own hondas forever. We were looking for our next new car and kept seeing all the great reviews and test results of different car ratings and it became obvious we had to look at kia.( particularly the k5). Once I drove off for the test drive I knew I was hooked. We absolutely love this car. So stylish, comfortable, plenty of power. Our first road trip this baby was getting 45 mpg highway. Wow! Love this car!

The flaws are many. The apple CarPlay and android auto both do not work in the car, even after the update. They tried blaming apple for not telling them about an update, but has nothing to do with Android… The car is loud. You can hear the outside wind and the AC whistles. I brought it in, showed the Kia Techs, they told me, we are not sure how to fix it. Like other people have said, the engine and transmission STRUGGLE. It continues to slip at higher rpms, even shaking. These issues can’t be fixed according to KIA even though they know it’s an issue.

I love this car. Traded in my Audi and needed something else that could keep up without the hefty price tag. This one did it for me. I love how it looks and I love how it drives. It’s quick, smooth, handles well, has TONS of features. Panoramic sunroof is awesome & it looks awesome. I love the price point and that this looks like an expensive vehicle. Great price. My ONLY complaint is that I wish they made some with manual transmissions. That would be fun! I may have just converted over to Kia for life.

I was most excited for the wireless apple car play, but it stopped working a few days after purchase. It is all over the internet about the same issues. Every few minutes an error message pops up saying “phone not responding. Please reconnect it and try again.” Mind you pandora is playing fine and I have service on my phone. The only way to get back to my maps or Waze app is to hit ok on the error message and then hit the car play button again. Doing this every few minutes is dangerous! Something is not compatible with the new apple update and Kia. Unfortunately, this car won’t allow you to just connect through a usb. I am so disappointed. Beautiful car but technology for apple is a waste and frustrating. Would not recommend

I’m happy

The car is gorgeous. There’s nothing negative that can be said about the exterior. It is perfect and I couldn’t be happier. I feel the K5 is truly gorgeous and stands out and looks best among all other sedans. I feel no one should look at that car exteriorly and have anything bad to say. Perhaps I’m behind in the game but I love the wireless CarPlay and missed having remote start. Sound system is good though I’m left wanting as far as bass dynamic. What I mean is, some rock songs don’t hit as hard as I’d like and some do. Some hip hop songs, the bass is good but other songs, it’s too strong or doesn’t hit hard enough. With more reliable and dynamic speakers, I’m never left wanting more from any song or having to turn down the music to accommodate the bass. It plays all manners of bass in a satisfying manner but I can’t say that about my speakers. I imagine the Bose speakers in higher trims are fantastic. Anyway, the car is TRULY gorgeous and I ADORE having the sunroof open. The car is so comfortable and spacy. It’s all around great and the word I come back to constantly is gorgeous. I think Edmunds review on the engine/drive is correct: it gets the job done in getting you the speed and power when you need it and to weave between traffic when needed but it ultimately doesn’t really wow you...but that’s ok with me. Perhaps because it is brand new, the pricing of leases might seem a little high. I say this in context thats by dealers were asking me for monthly payments that many would argue you should be paying only for cars considered more luxurious or luxury cars. With that said, I think this car stands proudly next to other cars (that are more expensive) in comfort, looks, and everything else while being a lot more affordable. Hopefully I made sense! All in all, I’m so happy.

I test drove the Gt line a coupe of times and it is truly a good looking car, BUT the engine when pushed it feels like it wants to complain / weak. The ride was stiff maybe its the size / pressure of the tires. Also the color choices both exterior and interior are limited. Good value though

Ok 1st off for those looking for a negative . The only gripe after 1 week is the designers either forgot to put in a trunk handle or wanted to save 7 bucks . i hope they will retro fit it 1 day soon. I traded my 9 month lease on a Lexus to buy the wilf Grey with red seats AWD and honestly except for that 1 factor never loved a car more. P s if you have kids maybe get the ex as cool GT line has no heater vents for rear passengers. No problem with me. Anyway the color is breathtaking to go along with stellar interior which is way more spacious then my recently retired uh250h. It has auto hold which I love and the car just feels good being in it. Coming from Detroit I was also pleasantly surprised to see the car is assembled in the USA with high USA content. Nice job Kia

About 4 months ago I was looking for a new car for my wife to use in her regular commute between Florida and Canada. She finally zeroed in on a K5 and we bought it. I drove it a bit before she left and found the handling to be good and reviews claimed it to probably be reliable. My only complaint was the seats. I found them to be very uncomfortable, "like riding a lumber wagon" was the way I put it to my wife. I purchased some tapered seat cushions that helped a bit. My wife thought I was being crazy. 3 weeks ago she left to make the 3 long day drive to her house. By the end of the 2nd day she agreed with me. After she got there she said that when she came back to Florida in the fall this thing is going to a new home. It now has 2900 miles on it and we are ready to pass it on to someone else ASAP. Instead interestingly enough, a contractor that I deal with had purchased a new Telluride about 6 months before we bought this K5. A month ago he traded his new Telluride in for a new Lincoln Navigator for the same reason. He said that a straight 4 hours in the Telluride and he couldn't get around very well. 2/24/22: This car is good from a mechanical relibality point of view. I bought it for my wife to use to drive between Florida and her home in Canada. It seems to serve her well. Personally I find it extremelu uncomfortable. I'm 5' 11" and weigh 195 Lb. The seats are as hard as rocks and after 2 hours in it I am stiff and sore. A set of after market speciality cushons did help a bit but I would never buy onr for myself. I have a contractor who does work for me who bought a new Telluride at the same time. He spends several hours each day in his vehicle. After 4 months he had the same complaint as me and he replaced it with a new Lincoln Navigator.

Recalled Issue BUT NO RECALL

I experienced the power loss issue with my K5. One of those times I was on the highway. By the grace of God the traffic was far enough behind giving me enough time and acceleration to get to the side of the road. After the second experience, took my car to the dealership and they said they couldn’t find anything wrong with it. Fast forward several months, Kia releases a recall for guess what?….the same issue I had. Took my car to the dealership for service and the recall. They tell me my car isn’t under any recalls and unfortunately there’s nothing they can do. Sorry Kia, I’m not risking me or my kids life for you to decide to recall my car.

I had the wolf grey with red syntax leather interior. The interior smelled awful but I Chalked it up to being new, however, the smell never went away. Then having the premium package it didn’t have heated seats or a heated steering wheel which is odd being it’s a premium package. Then the display in the car would randomly go black and not work for periods at a time. I have to say I was extremely excited about this car but there was a lot to be desired and a lot of failings and I traded it in after only 3 months of ownership. I would not recommend this vehicle.

I traded my 2012 Optima SX, which I loved, for a 2021 EX. I arrived home and realized there wasn't garage door opener capabilities on the rear view mirror, nor auto dim. I missed that on the two test drives. I had previously noticed the lack of electric folding outside mirrors. This model does not have an indoor trunk handle for shutting the trunk. I am working on how to turn off the Sirius sound when turning the engine off, currently the music stays on.

leased the GT Line, very impressed overall. My only complaint is how Kia is cutting features to save cost; Sirius Radio is now an option (?) and you can't open the gas cap cover from within the car (?). This is my 7th Kia, it my be my last.

Driving my new Kia Kia K5 flipped me from being 20 year Honda owner to a Kia owner. Car is comfortable, handles well and is reasonably quick. Technology laden and a great value. Also, in my opinion, the best looking mid sized sedan on the market presently. Reminds me of a lessor but still capable baby Stinger.

Bought a 2021 K5 GT turbo brand new......Spent 32,000$ for a low quality car. First it lacks AWD which makes you burn rubber when you accelerate to fast. Went through original Parelli tires in 10,000 miles. Had engine overheat at 14000 miles due to faulty thermostat. At 21,000 miles air conditioner broke... NO air and its 100 degrees. Car is in Shop for 4 days and have not heard back from Dealer. Buyer Beware. Not happy !!!

excellent car, one of the best I ever owned. So far, I averaged 39.4 miles per gallon on the highway UPDATE: on a vacation to Florida, I was averaging 60 to 70 miles per hour, on the open highway. My air conditioning was on the whole time. I can not believe that my car averaged 47.4 miles per gallon on the open highway, My car was loaded with suit cases. Amazing the milage I got on the open highway.

K5 is designed well with its just-fine size. Driving position can be set in just the way I want, and the better is that I can save such position for next driving. I bought hybrid trim and I like the sound it makes when the engine starts. Seats are comfortable and with all these great sides it costs relatively low which makes it perfect for my first car in my life.

I bought my 2021 Kia K5 gt-line awd in March of 21'. Wolf gray premium with special edition pkg. The car runs and drives fantastic, very smooth, decent power, good handling and respectable gas mileage. It honestly was the most comfortable car I have ever owned. Great tech and safety features just a enjoyable experience overall. No problems or issues in 2 years of ownership. However, very early one morning driving home from work a very large raccoon ran out in front of me and I hit him on the lower driver's side of the car and it went under the car and out the rear. I stopped and checked the damage and it didn't look all that bad. However after getting insurance involved and taking it to a shop the final bill was almost $13k! Besides the obvious front end pieces and a drivers side front wheel liner it also broke the plastic engine splash guard and some underbody plastic frame protection. The most surprising thing is it broke a low mounted engine control harness mount. Since it is not a stand alone part the entire harness had to be replaced requiring pulling the engine and dashboard out to replace. Ridiculously expensive repair for what was essentially a bunch of plastic and a poorly positioned wiring harness. As much as I absolutely loved the car, I traded it in for something taller and less fragile.
