One nagging problem

Since buying the car I've had a wind noise at the front doors. I've been to the dealer 8 times to try to get this fixed. They adjusted my door one time but it didn't help. I drove a different Sonata today with a service writer and even the new one had the same annoying noise. He said he hears it, but never noticed it until I pointed it out. I called Hyundai consumer affairs and am waiting to see what they will do for me. I told them I'd like then to buy the car back. I've never been more unhappy with a car. If not for this one problem, I would be very pleased with it. Be sure to take the actual one you are going to buy for a test drive first and pay attention to wind noise.

Practical comparision

We needed a new family sedan. Researching new car w/3 criteria: price, roominess, and MPG. After comparing compact sedans, the Elantra was 1st pick due to MPG. We drove the Sonata, too. The price difference was enough to consider mid-size due to roominess. It was a toss up between the Sonata and the Ford Fusion. The scales tipped to favor the Sonata vs Fusion by: price, roominess, MPG, and the best warranty. We've driven our Sonata from Cleveland to Pittsburgh and back. Average MPG hwy: 34.7 @ 75MPH. Average city/mixed MPG 27.8 @ 43 MPH ave; close to EPA rating. Only bad thing I can say about this car is road noise gets noticeable around 45 MPH and blind spots thru back window.

I have been researching Hyundai since it entered the American car market. They have come a long way, and have been successful. I am a car enthusiast and decided to give a Hyundai a shot. Recently leased a 2011 Sonata Limited. The car is wonderful. I had to take it in for a canopy rattle that ended up coming from the sunroof. The dealership gave me a rental car and rebuilt the sunroof over night. The rattle/creak is now gone. One thing that is annoying is the door-stays are not very strong and it's hard to keep the doors open sometimes. I notice a slight vibration in the steering column upon acceleration, but otherwise it's smooth. Love the car, very sleek and sophisticated.

The steering column on my 2011 Sonata started making terrible noises due to a known manufacturing defect with the steering shaft. Even though there is a formal NHTSA investigation (NHTSA Action Number: PE10035) and recall (NHTSA Recall No. 10V-426), the dealer told me that I have to pay over $400 dollars to fix the $2 part that is causing this hazardous issue. I include a link to an article that describes the hazards created by this issue: https://www.aboutlawsuits.com/hyundai-sonata-recall-steering-problems-13090/ . How can Hyundai sell such defective cars and then expect consumers to pay for the work to repair parts affected by recalls? Hyundai is very much aware that it sold cars with manufacturing defects in the steering shaft. According to reprots, the manufacturing defects mean that the driver could suddenly lose the ability to steer the vehicle, possibly resulting in an accident with a potential for property damage, injury and death. Given the grave risks associated with this manufacturing defect, I had no choice but to pay the inflated costs ($400 for replacing a $2 part) charged by the Hyundai dealer. http://www.wdrb.com/story/13219837/steering-column-forces-hyundai-to-issue-recall https://www.consumerreports.org/cro/news/2010/09/recall-2011-hyundai-sonata-steering-column-problem/index.htm . http://money.cnn.com/2015/03/01/autos/hyundai-recall/index.html

It's an excellent value for the money. The body style is the thing that first called my attention to this car. I have noted that, over the past 5 years, so many other makes, foreign and domestic, have copied all or parts of the body style. The engine has been extremely reliable as have the braking system. There were some front end suspension problems which have been corrected under my warranty. Warranty is excellent.
