Early impressions after Two weeks

I got the SEL with the activity & cargo package. First of all, the base engine has plenty of power for my needs, however, I tried the "smart" mode and didn't like it...too sluggish, but the normal mode is just fine for my driving style. It's just the wife and I so back seat room is a non-issue for us although at 5'9" with my seat adjusted to me, there is enough room behind me for any average adult. I came off of a maxed to the gills 2018 Sonata. I will say the Santa Cruz is very comfortable, easy to drive and handles well. There are only a couple things I miss by not getting the SEL Premium or the Limited trim, one of which is the adaptive cruise control, I loved it and miss it. Another, believe it or not, is the heated steering wheel. If you have experienced a Michigan winter, you know what I'm talking about. I read people griping about the bed being small. My answer to you is buy a bigger truck. The bed for me is perfect and although the activity package is expensive, it's well worth it for the tonneau cover which to me is a necessity. I ran it through a high pressure car wash and there were only a few drops of water in bed near the tailgate. I should mention the trunk in the bed. Many people online are complaining it's too shallow and comparing it to the Honda Ridgeline. Here's my take. The Ridgeline spare tire is only accessed through the trunk which is why it's deeper and the Santa Cruz spare is accessed from under the vehicle...difference being if you have a load of gravel or topsoil and have a flat on the way home, with the Honda you are shoveling it all out to get to your spare...not with the Santa Cruz. No one mentions that. Also should mention that the trunk and tailgate lock when the vehicle is locked and the Tonneau cover can be locked manually for much more security. Just to nit-pick a bit. I would have liked more storage cubbies and/or a sliding tray in the console bin (get on this aftermarket people), a place for sunglasses overhead and I would have preferred they ditch the shift lever in favor of a drive by wire knob which would give you much easier access to the USB & 12v ports as well as the wireless charging area for your phone. Ok, that's all for now. I will update later after I've had a few months with it.

15,000 miles later I’m still in love!

I fell in love with it out of the gate, but I prefer to leave reviews after the honeymoon is over. So far I’ve had it out to trailheads in the high desert, down logger trails in NH and on the beaches of NC. At one point I had it in deep axle-grease type mud, and still managed to keep it going. Would I take it out rock crawling in Moab? Absolutely not, but it is more than up to the task of getting outdoors. I couldn’t be more impressed with the technology, comfort and smooth ride. The 2.5L non-turbo engine provides plenty of power for my purposes, which is something I was originally concerned with.

I was able to find a Limited Santa Cruz in white, I absolutely love driving this small truck, after driving an F-150, the Santa Cruz is quite different. The technology is amazing, especially when you put on your signal to change lanes and the lane appears in the speedometer or RPM screen. The handling is fantastic and gas milage great. The large flat screen is easy to work and very driver friendly. Overall a great ride.

ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION ISSUES

Santa Cruz owner, 01/27/2023

My Santa Cruz limited is in the shop now due to engine running rough and engine light. Also towing company found oil on the roll back when delivering it back to the dealer. The engine has been acting up since the first month I purchased the vehicle but dealer has been unable to locate issue. The transmission has a hesitation when going from gears. It wants to roll forward when putting car in reverse. The steering will all of a sudden pull you to the left without warning. The dealer has not been able to find causes for transmission or steering issues.

Setting up my first service, I have some issues with an overall nice fun vehicle. 2022 Santa Cruz Warranty Work • Cruise Control This is the worst cruise control I have seen on ANY vehicle I have owned. For example; When I set the cruise at 60 MPH it will set at 59 MPH. I reset it to the speed I wanted and during cruise my speed will vary +/- 3-4 MPH. My other Hyundai’s remain right at the set point MAYBE vary +/- 1 MPH. • Transmission This is a terrible transmission. The RPMs flare when driving easy in the neighborhood and in town. If I use more throttle pressure out on the road it still flares more. I tried shifting manually the RPMs still flare. I tried shifting manually in Sport Mode RPMs still flare. The upshifts when driving easy are often clunky. Throttle Response The throttle response is poor. If I push the throttle quickly to pass a vehicle I wonder if it will actually do it. There is at least a full second delay before the vehicle reacts in any way. The throttle response is better in SPORT mode but I cannot drive around in SPORT mode. The Shifting is so delayed and RPMs so high with normal throttle control and the engine revs so long that it is impractical to use for normal driving. Other than that it rides and handles better than my Wife's new Tucson. Gets 26-28 MPG and looks good,
