Bought this car with 96000 mi., I am about to hit 216000 mi., mostly of highway driving as I was a long distance medical courier. Oil changes at about 5000 mi. and timing belt at 150000 mi. Let's talk about the bad: As someone mentioned, it has problems with the sway bar end links which produces a clacking noise, easy repair, $20.00 part on ebay and $50.00 labor at local mechanic (avoid dealers), one alternator which didn't abandon me totally, was about 200 mi. away from home but made it safely (all accessories off, radio, AC, etc,) of course following day didn't start, about $300.00 repair. Replaced clutch at 200000 mi. and throw out bearing, a couple of tire rod ends and one wheel bearing.Things that need repair but don't affect performance: tire pressure sensor need to be replaced as batteries are dead and light stays on, cruise controls disconnects shortly after engages (3 to 5 mi.), road and wind noise saturates cabin, you'll feel every bump on this car as it has a stiff suspension The good: hugs the road nicely at 80 mph, even on rain and wind I feel safe at 60 mph, had a blown rear tire doing 75 mph and I didn't think it was me as it has low profile tires that are about 4" (no sudden pulls or feeling of lost control) from the ground. The 2.0 liter engine with manual transmission is strong enough to merge into highways, transmission shifts with no effort and precisely,no oil burning between changes, don't need to add antifreeze, AC cools nicely at highway speeds at any temperature, in city driving it struggles at 90 degrees. Very happy with it!!! UPDATE: 309K miles, 1. fixed cruise control (brake switch), bought part on eBay (7.00 USD) and friend installed, 2. Tire Pressure Sensors, never fixed them as it required going to the dealer, yeah right!!! 3. Burning 1/4 oil every 2K miles or so @ 309k?, not complaining 4. One strut is leaking according to mechanic, I still feel safe on the road, won't change it! 5. Noises started to develop in cabin on bad roads, just normal wear and tear

This is our second Hyundai in 10 years. We traded our 01 Elantra in on a 2011 Malibu and hated it. We decided to trade it in on another car. We looked at all cars in its class and decided on the Elantra touring SE The test drive went pretty good. The 2.0L 4 cylinder had adequate execration and was very quite. The car provided good feed back to the driver while going through turns. Road noise in the cabin was quite as well. The controls are very easy to use and set up to accommodate the driver. Seats are comfortable and there is plenty of storage within the cabin area. Overall value of this car is unbeatable. For long trips the Crew Cab pickup will stay home we are taking the wagon!

Had it for 8 months now, pretty damn good! Really comfortable and spacious, driven with 5 average guys, between 20-27. and everyone had enough space for a 3 hour drive. Fit enough stuff(tent, beer, air mattresses, etc) for 3 people for a weekend camping trip, not comprimising on seating space at all. Alittle slow acceeration wise but once going its all good! Sound system is good, the usb input is kind of a pain, auxillary cable works fine though. Tons of compartments, all mine are empty dont have enough stuff to fill them. ONly complaint is seeing as im 21 I get called a soccer mom alot.

'Does everything very well; truly great in several areas: driver/passenger comfort & cargo space w/compact exterior size, both low and hi-speed handling, ease of parking and maneuvering in heavy-traffic, braking distance, driver-visibility, fun-factor & winter-weather driveability (with 5-speed manual tranny), reliability, ease of service, and a long list of standard features. All that and an expectation of good long-term reliability for 19G including tax and title? I'm pretty happy. UPDATE: In February 2015, I rear-ended an SUV that had suddenly stopped on a merge ramp. 'Totalled my poor baby, but it protected me. No incursion of damage into the passenger compartment. I'm very, very sorry to see this car go bye-bye; it was terrific.

I bought this car when it was 33 months old with 31K miles from a Honda dealer. After a year I can say I'm quite happy with the car. Sporty handling and a decent combo of power and economy. I'm a DIYer so I was happy to see oil & filter changes are a breeze. Engine uses no oil between oil changes. The hatchback practicality is great. A golf club bag fits neatly across the back. I had narrowed my decision down to this car or a Toyota Matrix. I'm happy with my selection. I average over 30 mpg in mixed driving and about 34 highway mpg

I have owned this car from new and have 325000 (202000 miles) and would recommend this vehicle to anyone that is more concerned about quality and good value than trying to, LOOK GOOD. Myself I like the way it looks. This car has adequate power good handling and you can't beat the storage space, nothing comes close not even the new GT version. What a let down that was. I was hoping Hyundai would update the engine and keep the utility. Oh well I won't buy a GT because of the poor interior space. I have only done normal maintenance on this car including spark plugs, oil and filter, brakes and timing belts. The car still has the original radiator, water pump, alternator, starter and fuel pump. I have owned one other Hyundai and it was a 2002 Santa Fe I put 420000 km(291000 mile) on it as well. If you are looking for a reliable inexpensive used car, its hard to beat. As of Feb 5 2022 I still own this car and drive it every day. I had to replace the alternator last summer. As before I wish Hyundai had kept the wide and low hatch opening, oh well looks before practicality. Update: I know have 217,000 miles (350,000 kms) on this car and it is still going. There is some rust starting to come through but I never oil sprayed it. I replaced the alternator last year but apart from tires and brakes this is the first major component failure. It is still running on the original a/c compressor, evaporator and condenser and still the original water pump. All wiper motors are original as well. Unfortunately Hyundai's aren't what they used to be, ya they are flashy and fancy but reliability isn't what it used to be. And what happed to the Accent? Are there no more economy cars?

Hi, update after 20,000 miles in my 2011 elantra touring se model. Right to the point; could use more top end horsepower for higher speed interstate travel, it doesn't really like to average over 80, especially up hills of any consequence. Off the line response is excellent, making easy work of around town driving. Better than many cars I've driven like a turbo VW or small mercedes; they are built for the high speed cruising at some expense of around town response. Perfectly reliable thru 20k miles. Drove through the 100 year storm last winter across tennessee, arkansas and oklahoma. I mounted Conti DWS tires, as the stock tires couldn't get me out of my snow covered driveway in Nashville!

My wife and kids positively *love* our Touring! They're all short (5'2 to 5'4) so they love the visibility and low-dash design The controls are well laid out and easy to use. The radio is small and fiddly. Ride is stiff, but handling is good. Not truly sporty, though. Hyundai seems to think making things stiff and heavy = sporty, but that's not true. It is a vastly better driver than my '13 Elantra Sedan, which, although more comfortable, has "unsettled" handling. Handling is predictable and road holding good. Engine is weak and mileage is not great in this class. Seats are hard and flat, but surprisingly don't kill you on long (14+ hour) drives.

I bought this car as my family was expanding and wanted something practical but still fun to drive with decent looks. I have not been disappointed. For me the 5spd manual transmission is a must, I have gone one some long extended road trips - 20 hours in a single day and the bullet proof engine just keeps on going. I'm 115,000 miles (185,000km) in with no problems. I just keep up my maintenance, oil changes and changed my timing belt (400$) and the car has treated me well. The space with the seats folded flat is incredible - I have carried tables, lounge chairs and everything in-between. Great Car!

I'm happy enough with my 2012 Hyundai Elantra Touring GLS, except for having to repeatedly replace the odometer/trip LCD. I think I'm on my third replacement. I have 13K on it (each replacement odometer LCD is set at "0" miles), and this one is now starting to go. Once it goes bad it can only be read in the morning. After the car sits in the sun all day the odometer fades until it is unreadable. Other than that I'm happy with the car.

Overall, the car is reliable. However, I've had to replace the odometer/dash twice (w/in 60K miles) due to the numbers disappearing on me. Not sure if due to malfunction, heat/sun, etc... But it's annoying because the fix resets the odometer back to 0. I really miss my old 2005 Hyundai (accent). It was made better than this car. Other than that, the car has been reliable. No major problems aside from odometer. Does not accelerate quickly. Would I buy one again? Unfortunately, no.

Bought the car as I needed to transport my 2 German Shepherds. With the back seats down, it accomodates them well. The SE trim has a stiffer ride than the GLS which I like. Looks very smart in Chili pepper red with the upgraded wheels. Have 3000 miles on the clock now. Averaging 25 mpg in mixed driving and up to 31 on a 500 mile trip to San Diego. The car is nicely put together with no sqeaks or rattles. Idles very smoothly and is entertaining to corner with when the dogs are not in the back! Leather seating surfaces are by far the way to go as they are easy to keep clean especially from dog hair!

I bought the 2011 Elantra Touring recently and think it is a nice car so far. It is reasonably priced and nice- looking. The steering and braking are excellent with the new Electronic Stability Control. Hyundai did a good job of updating the car and creating what is essentially a small station wagon. It looks more like a station wagon than a hatchback and has a huge amount of space for a compact car. Overall I like the car!

Overall, we love this car - I was looking for a smaller around-town car with decent mileage that could also hold quite a bit of gear for family vacations. We have packed this car to the gills and my Boy Scout son has noted that you can fit more gear in back than in the Scoutmaster's Honda CRV. Great legroom and headroom in both the front and especially in the back for adults. Low windows in back so that kids and smaller adults can see out (we didn't know that was a potential problem until we were shopping!) Only complaints are the odometer fading out (seems this is a common problem and yes, we had it replaced and the second one did it too) and overall it feels a little cheap inside - the cloth drivers seat developed a hole fairly quickly and handles, doors, etc. just feel less than substantial. (Then again, this car is fairly inexpensive!) It now has more than 100,000 miles (tough to know exactly due to odometer issues!) and is going strong - it has needed very little maintenance. I do wish it got better mileage overall though - seems like a car its size should get better mileage.

I research every one of my purchases to DEATH and buying a new car was no different. We have a young child and two dogs, so needless to say we needed something that could haul them all comfortably. I am not a fan of SUVs and a minivan was out of the question. Browsing Edmunds I ran into the Elantra Touring, scheduled a test drive and never looked back. The SE trim game me everything I wanted and the manual transmission keeps it fun to drive. Only about 300 miles on her to date, but so far this has been a great purchase!

I've never considered a Hyundai before in my whole life. I'm a patriotic American and have tried to buy American over and over to help my fellow countrymen but - damn! - I'm sick of the cars. I researched a hatchback, SUV or wagon for the wife to replace her rapidly deteriorating Saturn Ion. The Touring is designed by Hyundai Europe in Germany (it's the i30 over there) and it feels like it. we feel we got a German station wagon for a Hyundai price. Outstanding standard features and PEP #2 options (reasonably priced) and comfortable as heck. huge cargo capacity. We love it. Excellent price through TrueCar.com.

Bought it used from dealer in 2017. 3 years without any problems. Drives like it's on rails. I'm tall 6'1" and have at least 3 inches of headroom in the drivers seat. Lumbar support is awesome. I could drive this car all day. Handles solid, won't wear you out correcting steering. Decent fuel mileage. Has great pickup when moving into faster speed limit (60klh to 90 klh) areas. Can stop on a dime. Tons of room for my golf clubs and equipment. Had 5 people in it and all were comfortable. Paid $12,000 for it with 28,000 km. I would have paid $16,000 I'm that happy with it. If anything happens to it I'll be looking for another one first. Too bad they stopped making them in 2012.

I just bought a manual one and since day one is having problems with first gear that most of the time doesn't engage. I have to start in 2nd gear even when I am completely parked. Took to the dealer and was told that I am the problem. I have always driven manual cars and NEVER had any problems. They don't want to fix it or they don't know how. Now I am stuck with a brand new car that doesn't work properly.

I purchased my Hyundaia Elantra Touring new in April of 2011, and am desperately hunting for a new car in Sept. 2017. This car only has 60,000 miles on it and has been a money pit from the get go. It has ALWAYS had issues with the sway bar and sway bar links. At LEAST once a year we're having to replace them, which is absurd. The car also sounds like it's developing issues with the transmission, as it gets jerky switching between 2nd and 3rd gear. This car only has 60,000 miles on it, which is hardly anything. I like the size of this car, and the gas mileage is pretty decent (around 30 mpg), but the amount of money we've had to sink into this car has been awful. I would have assumed we just received a bum car, but my in-laws also purchased the same car about 3 months after we purchased ours, and they dumped it after 18 months as it was also consistently breaking down and needing repair. I'm not sure how this car has received such high reviews. I will be glad when we can get a new one. This has left a poor impression of Hyundai on me, and I'll be going back to Hondas from now on.

I just trade my 2010 Nissan sentra for 2011 elantra touring. After experience the poor quality of the sentra specially the CVT what's a joke. After all. I picked the et. It's a simple mechanical design power train, less electrical wiring, fewer sensors. Less trouble for sure. Power is plenty for my ( I am not a racer ) smart design for useful space. The car is solid build. It handles so well at all speed. I would recommend it to any one. Good price and high quality overall.

I love this car, but . . . I bought it in April of 2013 from the dealer. It was loaded, and had 1,000 miles on it. Within the first few months of owning it it burned through oil like crazy. It took 2 dealers to solve the problem, which was covered under the warranty. The first was Gary Rome Hyundai in Holyoke, MA, and they said it was fixed, but it wasn't. Will never go to that dealer again. A year or so later, the instrument panel lights faded, (mileage, odometer, range),making it impossible to navigate using these tools at night at night or in bright sunlight. It took 3 dealers to solve the problem, and necessitated sending the odometer somewhere in Michigan so that the mileage would remain intact. 5 years later, after having shelled out over $1,000 for the 60k mile service, and just after making a 1600 mile road trip (thank god it didn't happen on the trip), the check engine light came on. Turns out I need a new transmission, which is also covered under the warranty. I was hoping to get at least 100,000 miles out of this car, but at this rate I don't know if it's worth it to try. On a side note, the tires that come on Hyundai cars are no match for serious winter weather. During the first winter, I got stuck coming up the slight incline in the driveway. Swapped out the tires for Nokian SW2 all season tires rated for snow. I wish they still make them, but am now on the latest iteration - Nokian SW4s. I wish the rear seats folded flat, but they don't. Next time I will check before I buy, as this is pretty much a necessity. FYI when the second dealer put me in a loaner while they fixed the oil problem, they put me in an Equus. I got a lot of thumbs up from young kids in the neighborhood, as in pimp my ride. I hardly ever see any Equus's on the road or at the dealerships because, after all, who wants to buy a luxury car from a car maker that is known for economy pricing? Not me. This Elantra will be my first and last Hyundai.

This is NOT a review, but rather first impressions after purchasing. I'll skip the technicalities, as I don't have enough statistics to give a solid evaluation yet. The car looks and feels like an ideal match for intended audience - small family of 2-4. Not small, not too big either. Very nice set of essentials for driving, safety and comfort. Car feels very well planted on a road. Nice torque and acceleration. Pretty smooth 4-speed automatics. Excellent visibility. The interior is comfortable, easily fits 6"+ drivers. Cargo space is great, esp. with folded rear seats. Very little of fake metal insets that look so nasty Elantra Sedan '11. The beginning is very positive. To be continued

This was initially a European product that Hyundai imported to North America for 2 or 3 years. Even though some publications have said this is a worse-than-average vehicle for frequency of repairs, my experience is that the 2011 version has been highly reliable. The recalls were for minor problems that local dealers straightened out in an hour or less each trip in. My only issue areas are the seat comfort for longer trips and the amount of road noise that gets into the cabin. On the other hand, the 5-speed manual is very pliant and well-synchronized going both up and down. The car has never let me down.

I love my new 2012 Elantra Touring! It has more cargo rom than a Nissan Murano at 1/2 the price! Good gas mileage, comfortable ride, and room for my small family make it the perfect crossover alternative. The GLS with the preferred package is a great compromise between the bas emodel and the more expensive SE model! Many of the same features for a lower price. The competition cant touch this car. Matrix seems shoddily built, Focus HB is much more expensive, Mazda 3 HB has much less room and price is higher. I recommend this car whole heartedly

Reliable and Fits Everything

We bought this car new in 2011 right before our first child was born, and we are still driving it as a family of four with a large dog 13 years later. We are at 118,000 miles. The dog is a bit of a squeeze, but he manages by stretching from the back seat to the front seat. We take this car everywhere as it is our only vehicle; camping, hockey tournaments, skiing, mountain biking, you get the idea. The stock tires were garbage and the transmission failed at about 50,000 miles but was replaced under warrantee. Other than that, it has only been oil changes and fluids. We put winter tires on for ski season and it handles amazing in the snow. Its such a practical car. We are finally in the market for a second car (keeping this one around for the kids to learn how to drive in), and part of me wants to buy another one.

I never even thought to shop for an old Hyundai. But I wanted a wagon and preferred a stick shift and there happened to be on nearby. I gotta say--give this car a chance. The quality is higher then you expect from Elantra Sedan and the stick shift is quite good to use (and light!). The ride is fun on normal sweeping country roads, but reaches its limit on mountains. Its truly a city car that has alot of space for a family and can do highway but reaches its limit when your on freeways at 80 for any extended amount of time. In spite of that, ive put alot of highway miles and that's mainly due to adding sound deadening to the car and hood which decreases the ambient noise by nearly 4DB! Everyone also complains it doesn't look good, but i think it looks like a classic hatchback with a bigger trunk. The mazda3 is a better car, but this is the better wagon. Update: I'm at 188K and had to replace the clutch due to worn pilot pin, starter and alternator. Still getting 29MPG. I have also found that when I need to haul very large things I can take the 4 bolts out of the front seat to make it perfectly flat once in a while. Still a wonderful, fun car! 205K: finally decided to donate this car. I had to replace the steering wheel gear (a known hyundai/kia issue @ 1K) and my passenger window motor stopped working but it still runs fine. Just needed a bigger car. One of my favorite cars!

The MT is fun to whip around, yet gets good mileage---unless you cruise at 80. It's not a *fast* car, but a *fun* car. The hatch and split folding rear seats make it extremely functional too. I got mine used and have kept it six years as my daily driver and occasional road tripper. No complaints.

We already have a 07 AWD Santa Fe, with a pretty reliable record. Didn't know about this car 1 year ago, but it fits the bill perfectly. Mileage is 25-28 city and 31-34 highway with a light foot, car coasts very easily in neutral, I throw it there often. Ride can be harsh on the freeway in So Cal, my wife dislikes this bumpiness caused by the perpendicular cross-cuts in the pavement for water drainage. Overall no problems at all, with a few rattles coming from the shifter and occasionally the car idles like a diesel for no reason. I would recommend the manual shifter if you want to have more control over the driving experience. Older people with bad backs will not like the SE.

Fishtailing

I had to brake for not just one but three deer standing in the road way at 3 am on a dry day, no ice or anything on the pavement. I applied the brakes firmly did not slam on the brakes in a panic mode. I applied gradual and firm pressure to the peddle. Result was the back end fishtailed erraticly and made me feel like I was going to lose control of the vehicle. I did not like the feeling at all. This car gets great mileage and on has 50,000 miles on it despite being a 2011. The back end of this car must be to light. I can think of no other reason. Why it would respond the way that it did.
