Born to be a Classic
The Prelude is definitely an underestimated Honda. Very elusive compared to your Civic or Accord. Civic would be the bottom line daily driver, the Accord would be the nice family car, and the Prelude would be the slighty more exotic sports car. I get looks and compliments everywhere I go. I wouldn't trade this car for the world. If you're looking for something sporty, that also makes a great daily driver, then the Honda Prelude is definitely for you. It's fast, it's fun, and it's beautiful. What else could you ask for?
Once is never enough
I bought a '97 Lude when it was new and loved it for two years. I later needed more room so I traded it in. Now that I'm looking for a used second car, I'm back. I bought a 'oo model and it's like going back in time - just as I remembered. I'm amazed at how this car has held it's value. It's a timeless design that will never look old and the best sports coupe in its class. Add in the reliability and there's no competition for this car.

My Dream Car. Also My best Car
The most excellent combination of practicality and sports coupe. My car has been a dream for the most part. I have 215,000 miles and limited maintenance. The ignition switch at 80,000 was a recall item. I didn't listen to my mechanic about flushing the tranny at every 60K, and the filter finally clogged at 170,000 miles. Otherwise, I have had no other problems. One nagging issue, is the low tires make driving in snow of more than 3" difficult and the car is very hard on tires. The sound system is incredible and the performance is very titillating for those loving speed. It's a tribute to Honda craftsmanship.
One Sweet Car
I bought this car as I loved the sleek and sporty body style plus knew of Honda's reliability. I've owned the car over 4 years and the only thing I've done is put a new battery in it. Due to my getting older I am thinking about trading it for a Tacoma but am having a very difficult time bringing myself to do it. 28 MPG on the open road and it handles so smoothly. The paint on it still has a showroom shine but I really baby the car. If anyone is looking for an incredibly sporty car that will get you looks plus the added benefit of great reliability than get yourself one of these babies. You won't be sorry.
FUN FUN FUN
Fun to drive. Utterly reliable. Handles like a dream. Complete strangers offer compliments on it. Suprisingly comfortable on long trips with two adults. Best sports car for the money.
Honda Lude Review
This is an excellent car and a shame Honda stopped production of the Prelude. A great used car and fortuneately for prospective buyers, good deals are out there for low- mileage Preludes.
Nothing Better!
I have always trusted Honda cars, but the Prelude!!! Oh Lord! it is a DREAM. It hugs corners like you wouldn't believe living in the Bay Area I have to cross bridges constantly. Although the Prelude is considered a smaller car the design of the car makes it possible to drive right though the wind on the briges and no more shaking. Even though it is a sports car I actually feel safer because it is heavier and the aerodynamics are prefect for driving in high wind ares. I feel sorry for those who are foolish enough to drive anything else! This is a car I will keep for the ages! THANK YOU HONDA!
Outstanding Performer
I have used my Prelude SH as a long distance commuter (250+ miles one way) over mountain passes. It corners incredibly and is incredible on ice and snow. Seats are very comfortable even for a 56 year old frustrated wantabe sports car racer. I get an honest 30 mpg in the summer and it drops to 26 mpg in the winter (oxygenated gas in our area). The only draw back for someone my age is that it is low to the ground and getting hard for me to get into and out of--but that is why it handles sooooo great! I really love the car. If it was a convertible it would be perfect. Honda was crazy to stop making Preludes.
Bring Back The 'Lude
The car's a blast to drive. It's quick, it's solid, it's nimble.
LUDES RULE
Just upgraded from 97 auto to 00 SH model. Base model is nice, but SH is a must for true performance. The SH offers dramatically improved handling and whips corners as fast as the driver can handle. The car has ample power, but anything could use more power. Add some bolt ons for a few more horses. Love the styling (the headlights grow on you), but interior is a bit bland, and can be unconfortabe for a taller person. Good gas mileage unless you push into Vtec on every gear. Could use a 6th gear for better hwy mileage. I have some worry about my clutch already making noise at 44k mi. But I bought it at 40k, and I don't know how it was treated.
Great bang for the buck
Today (1/26/05) is my fifth anniversary with this car. It has 50,790 miles, and hasn't given me a minute's trouble. 24 mpg minimum, and a lot of the time it gets 26.5 mpg. I think it's a very attractive car, perfect for short commutes. My only gripe is that it is not a very comfortable car, it's noisy, and the ride is a little rough. I can last 30 minutes at a time before I feel the need to get out and stretch. I'll be trading for something more comfortable and more useful. This is flashy personal transportation that handles well. Enough room for a week's groceries in the trunk. No room in the back seat for adults, so forget it, just fold the seat down and leave it that way.
First time, some surprises, mostly good.
My first new car in 13 years and my first time driving a Prelude. The dealer had a Black, 2000, 4-speed sequential sport shift transmission. Cost $1000 more than the 5-speed manual. After I got used to the transmission and shifter, I really appreciated its benefits. Car has rock- solid handling, cornering and braking. Sturdily built and low to the ground (another feature that takes getting used to). I regularly use both sides of the sport-shifter. I plan to keep the car for a long time.
Best Car Ever
The Honda Prelude is one of the best cars to come out of Japan. EVER!!!!
I love my prelude
I have a lot of fun driving my car. Never have any problems.
A great sport coupe that needed more HP
No major difficulties-2yr serv. Conservative inside/out--more mature car. Engine very capable. ATTS system good. Stereo system good. Decent sports coupe practical (fold RR seat) + capable of blasting down road--enjoyable, fast ride.
best sports coupe
best car honda ever made
BEST PERFORMANCE FOR YOUR BUCK
most underrated car ever made excellent handling, braking. Why did they ever discontinue this car
Too bad you can't buy 'em new anymore
The first can I ever purchased new and a good choice at that. What every "big- muffler" Civic Si wants to be when it grows up. If you have to transport kids or more than one adult, forget it, but if your life permits such a car, go for it. No major defects, but would sure like it if the dealer could find and silence the sunroof squeak and figure out why the front suspension creaks and pops on warm days like my knees on cold days. BUY A K&N FILTER!!: $20 for a regular replacement is robbery. $40 for a K&N and it's the last air filter you'll have to buy.
2000 Honda Prelude
Great acceleration, great handling for such a large car. 200 hp VTEC engine is extremely pronounced when VTEC hits.
Best Practical Sports Car Out There
If you want a practical sports car, look no further. Good fuel economy, enough room to fit four people if you absolutely have to (but recommended for two - and perhaps a baby seat in the back.) Amazing handling for a front wheel drive car (Car & Driver says it is the best handling car under $30,000 - and fourth best at any price.) My car has had zero defects, zero squeaks, zero rattles, and zero problems..
Noisy Rear Suspension
This car has been nice, with the exception of a noisy rear suspension. I love the exterior styling and motor is very strong for a 2.2L. However, whenever I hit bumps, or leave a driveway, or do anything to move the rear suspension much, it squeaks and grinds. This has been fixed twice by the dealer, only to return. I am ready to take it in for a third time, before my warranty ends. I may end up trading the vehicle in since it seems to be a design flaw, rather than a repairable issue. This isn't what I expected from Honda.
2000 Honda Prelude
Numerous squeaks and rattles. Annoying wind noise around drivers door that dealership could not detect. Extremely noisy at highway speeds.
Reliable Honda?
I will NEVER own another Honda. This car burns oil....at least a quart every 1,000 miles. I've talked to my dealership numerous times (they know my face now) and I've even talked to American Honda via letters and phone calls. I am always told that this is the way the car is built and there is nothing that Honda can do for me. My low oil pressure indicator light has come on twice since I've owned the car. It's a beautiful car, but it's not reliable and I certainly don't expect it to live as long as Honda predicts their cars should last. American Honda has a failing grade from the BBB. Don't buy a Honda.
Excellent sports car
This was the first car I bought for myself and it's been a pleasurable driving experience the entire time I've owned it. There hasn't been a single instance of mechanical fault, and I still turn my head to look back at my car when I walk away--and even after 3 years I still feel a swell of pride that this car belongs to me. I haven't seen another car with such nice exterior looks anywhere near the price range. I got leather seats installed-- I recommend this highly.
Prelude for life
I have owned three preludes and this is the best to date. Good performance, styling, quality. The best of all 5 generations of Preludes combined.
Not to shabby
This car is not bad for the price.I just feel that for the way it looks it needed a bit more power. I feel the looks are the hook and sinker for this car.
excellent for a leisure/sport driver
I fell in love with Preludes even more after I purchased one. The steering is amazing....one can turn and turn and turn....and the car will still hold. Fuel economy is well done, and the power is not likea a car that gets good gas mileage. 196 wheel horsepower makes Vtec at 5200 RPMs ample the amount of power.
Automatic trans...bad idea
Love the car, but big mistake buying an automatic trans. Bought car in April, trans burned out in June, I'm in my late 30's so the car is stock and I drive normal. Honda replaced the trans under warranty, told me it was around $5500. Too bad, should of bought the 5 speed
Prelude S and SH
I've owned 3 2001 Preludes... Fast cars, powerful vtec, and great styling. I LOVE THIS CAR!
SH....The best
I love my car.Ive had it now for about four months,it has been great. When buying this car you recieve:Style, quality and great performance all in one package.I have yet to see a car like this. When i say that i mean a "non" base turbo car.Sure the WRX,Evo are quick, but the turbo made those that way. This car is awesome w/out the turbo. But im am going to purchase a turbo so i can join the leaders. This will send me up about 100- 125 horses....Gotta luv it!
Transmission
DO NOT BUY THIS CAR WITH AN AUTO TRANSMISSION! Honda has extended the warranty to 7 year / 100,000 miles due to problems. Great, right. WRONG! With only 39,000 miles on it the trans was leaking and needed replacement. Great, a new Trans. WRONG - REMANUFACTURED. So how much does a new one cost. SORRY CAN'T GET ONE IN THE USA. So much for Hyundai, Oops I mean Honda. If you work for honda and are reading this. Think about your reputation now, I hope your proud.
The best lude!
it's a great car, i love it, daily driven...great!
Civic Si on steroids
Most of the problems I had were really my fault (like trying to roll down the window when it was frozen) My biggest complains are a couple of noises from the engine that the Honda dealer says not to worry about. The clutch sometimes slips and makes a griding noise. The clutch is kind of hard to press. I keep getting check engine light, dealer says everything is ok. So far the only money I have put in the car is for oil changes and I have 51000 miles. The interior looks like a 1980's Honda Accord, but its built strong. Forget about the 2 seats in the back. Don't buy it if you are more than 6 feet tall. Its a Honda, but its not indestructible.
Great Car
I've never owned a car that I love driving this much. No ifs and or buts about it.
2000 Honda Prelude
FUN TO DRIVE. This car performs amazingly well. I can hardly tell its only a 4-cylinder. I can't believe that Honda discontinued this vehicle. If you want a fairly inexpensive but high-performance sports car... I recommend this vehicle.
Attention getter, with a follwing
It eats up oil, wants to fishtail but I do not let it and brakes great like your life depends upon it. I love the power boost, the sports car handling and the surprised look on a girlfriend when people rush gush over it with love.
