Five Stars, Five Pros & Five Cons

2019 Honda Passport Touring 4dr SUV AWD (3.5L 6cyl 9A)

After a week of driving the new Passport my top five favorite features are : (1) The Honda Sensing safety suite (I especially love the Blind Spot Monitoring, included at EXL and above), (2) the Apple Car Play is terrific, (3) the Nav on this Touring trim also works well, (4) The push buttons in the cargo area for quick fold-down of the back seats rock!, and (5) The underfloor storage area in the cargo area is handy for keeping items out of sight and secured from sliding around in the back. This Passport is not perfect though, so here are five things I would have Honda change (the first four are right between the driver and front passenger): (1) The Captain’s chair style arm rests are a bit narrow and short for my liking. I’d prefer more real estate to rest my forearm on. (2). The push button gear selector takes some getting used to. It may be the future of gear selection, but I still prefer something more mechanical, where muscle memory takes over instead of the Passport’s version that requires looking down to ensure pressing the correct button. (3) The Auto Stop/Start of the engine (e.g. when idling at a red light) is defaulted to *ON* every time you start the engine. The good news is that it is just one button press (just below the gear selector) to turn it off, but that is a bit annoying to do on every trip if you do not like this feature. I wish it was defaulted to the OFF position. (4) on Touring & Elite there is glossy piano black trim that collects finger prints and smudges like a champ. Honda places this all around the gear selector so if you are searching by feel for the buttons you are sure to smudge it all up (I don’t think this is an issue on the Sport or EX-L). (5). The lighting choices on the back of the vehicle are perplexing. The white reverse lights are all the way down just above the exhaust tips, making them less visible. Also, it seems that Honda removed the red “tail-light extension” lighting found on the rear hatch of the current Pilot (possibly to make the Passport more distinctive). It makes the tail/brake lights seem puny to me and ultimately less safe due to lack of visibility. Despite these cons, I feel the new Passport deserves 5 stars based on my limited experience thus far. The acceleration doesn’t really impress, but if you are comfortable using the paddle shifters, you can easily downshift when needed to make that tight merge onto the interstate, etc. I was able to average 26 mpg on the highway, which exceeded my expectation for this size of vehicle. During city driving the mpg has dropped down to 17-19 for me, which (sadly) is about what I expected. But your combined mpg can easily be in the low 20s as advertised. I like a higher vehicle stance and the Passport delivers. You will find that you are eye-to-eye with any full size pickups on the road around you. Overall, if you can live with the applicable cons that I listed above, then I think you will be very happy with this vehicle.

It's not just a Pilot

I now have 5000 miles on my Passport and still love this vehicle. I would change only one thing in it if I could. I would put the 6 speed transmission from my wife's 2018 Pilot in it. The 9 speed pushbutton is very smooth. However there is a noticeable hesitation when shifting from park to drive or reverse. I also like the shift lever better than the pushbuttons. However, I wouldn't let this stop me from buying another Passport. As I said in my first review this vehicle does everything well. It's a real comfortable very good handling SUV with plenty of power and loads of room. My wife loves her Pilot but says she would rather have a Passport. My Passport now has 8500 miles in 15 months. It runs smoother and quieter then when it was new. And it was real good then. It's faster than my 06 three series BMW was and my gas mileage is pretty good for a large AWD SUV. 22 mpg around town and 25 to 26 on the highway. I've never driven a better handling SUV and it has loads of room and is real comfortable. And not a problem so far. I also have a 2018 pilot. If you don't need the third row of seats I would definitely get the Passport.

61 years of car buying

I have purchased 50 plus vehicles since my first car in 1959 and and first new car in 1960. They included vehicles from motor homes to motorcycles, conversion vans to sports cars, and an honest effort to find a perfect vehicle. All were in one way or another a compromise, too tall, too small, poor build quality, unreliable, etc. At still under 1,000 miles the 2019 Honda Passport Touring may be my nearest to purchasing an ideal vehicle. Reasonably priced the Passport has a surprising good ride. It is as quiet as my 2014 Acura TL. It is almost 2 seconds faster 0-60 than the hottest car made in 1957, the V8 Chevrolet with the performance package. In the long term I am convinced the V6 engine will be more reliable and less costly than the competition's turbocharged.

We have had the 2019 Passport Elite for about 6 weeks. (1500 miles) We got 28.5 MPG on a recent trip. Almost bought a new Rav-4 but wife & I bumped our heads getting in. The Passport is incredibly roomy. We like the height and width and 20" tires. A 300 pound friend said it was the biggest back seat he had ever been in. Feels like a solid, well made vehicle. Pleasure to drive. Loaded with technology. Enough power to keep you out of trouble.

We bought our Silver with black Elite in March (6 months ago) and have put nearly 14,000 miles on it so far. We have had a cross country trip as well as a few other closer trips and we love it on the road. Very comfortable on the highway and passes slower traffic with ease. The car feels substantial on the road yet also somewhat nimble as you zip around town. I have loaded the Passport up with building materials several times and am always amazed at how much it will hold and the interior has held up very well to this abuse. I enjoy the looks of the Passport and the blacked out trim which gives it somewhat of a rugged look. The ventilated seats are adequate and similar to other cars that I have driven but don’t expect to actually feel air blowing out of the seat. We have had no problems with the car and have had the scheduled service done at the local dealer. If you want to do a lot of rock crawling and some serious off roading then you probably should get a 4Runner or a Jeep. If you are like the rest of us and want to have a comfortable, smooth road car with the ability to do some light off roading then look no further. We have enjoyed this car so much that we have decided to get another Elite but this time in white.

Six years of ownership and I still really like this vehicle. There is a tremendous amount of electronic safety features that if you are coming from an older model car it can be intimidating. I have been waiting for an SUV that had over 75 cubic feet of cargo space without a third row of seats, a six cylinder, and finally this one fits the bill. It is extremely quiet and well built. The forward sensors that control a variety of electronics are positioned behind the windshield by the rear view mirror. So if your windshield gets a crack or rock, you will need to have a Honda windshield installed. It is best to purchase the extended warranty. I will say that a number of articles said that is had poor acceleration but I think it is fine. Yes, one would expect more from a six cylinder but not when you take into consideration that it weighs over 2 tons. Overall, I highly recommend this vehicle. After 66 months of ownership, this is still a smile producing vehicle every time I drive it. The one annoying aspect is the amount of time the computer uses to change gears from reverse to drive.

Have had our Passport(Touring) for 2 weeks now, initially went to go buy a Pilot for my wife. Wasn't even close, nothing against the Pilot. We didn't need the 3rd row anymore so it made our decision even easier. The new look of the Passport and all the interior features along with how it handled made the difference. We traded in a Acadia Denali and was the best purchase we ever made. Honda did it right bringing the Passport back and the new look grabbed my attention as soon as I saw it on the showroom floor. We have 3 kids and still with no 3rd row, it is plenty of room for a trip down to Hilton Head, and all of my girls are older. Impressive car, take it for a spin and you will see!!!

Problems with this new passport

I bought my passport in February. Immediately I noticed some issues with the sensors. The crash mitigation system is supposedly designed to reduce rear end collisions. When I drive on a 2 lane road and a car is coming at me from the opposite direction my car will flash “BRAKE” and put on the brakes rather aggressively. Honda‘s response? We put it in the handbook, that can happen, with a shadow or a building or a hard breeze also, they are just sensitive. Additionally when it rains my car will flash “APPROACHING OBJECT” and beep incessantly. The only way to stop it is to put the car in park and/or turn off the engine. Honda‘s response? As long as we can duplicate that we will fix it. They put a water hose on it and duplicated it. They then kept my car for a week. After a week they said they don’t have a fix for it. Sorry. I told him I couldn’t drive a car like that and I needed to get out of it. They told me to come up and they would give me the greatest deal to move into a different vehicle. The sales manager said his passport that he is driving is doing the same thing. I told him you didn’t pay for it you’re just given it to drive because you’re the manager. He said it’s a Honda issue not his. I am very disappointed in Honda. I will continue to contact them about this issue. Update: After my poor experience at the dealership with the manager telling me it was Honda‘s problem and not his and offering me anything but a great deal I received a request to review the dealership. They told me they would give me a great deal to trade out of the Passport it into something else. The great deal was sticker price on another car and $6000 upside down on the passport. The upside down part I can somewhat understand but it was a horrible deal. I rated the dealership and the sales team as a one. I also rated the service department as a one. That was my experience. Very shortly after I submitted that the manager of John Eagle Honda called my phone and started screaming at me asking me why I gave him a one. I told him it was because of the way that they treated me at the dealership. Telling me that they were going to fix my car and then not. Telling me to come up that they would give me a great deal and then not. He was extremely out of line and I told him to never call my phone again. I ended up going to another dealership and trading it in on a different brand. It goes without saying that Honda will not get my business again. I sent them emails explaining that driving down the road and having my car beep and or brake when a car was passing me in an opposite lane, and beeping constantly as if there were a short in a wire every time it rained was not normal. They said that they would not fix it and I needed to stop emailing them. I probably could have pursued a lemon law case but everyone has to pick their battles in life and I decided to be rid of a car with that many problems and being upside down was a bitter pill that seemed less painful than dealing with a bunch of lawyers, which is of course what companies like this hope for.

I owned a 2017 Honda Ridgeline pickup for about a year and decided I wanted to go back to a SUV and bought a 2018 Chevy Equinox Premier 2.0 Turbo (top of the line). Seemed fine for the first few months, then became more evident of it's cheap construction. Noisy interior. It also developed an annoying vibration at low or high speeds. Dealership service couldn't or wouldn't fix. Traded it for a 2019 Honda Passport Touring AWD. Very happy with it. Solid construction, very quiet and comfortable interior, controls and instruments very intuitive, good navigation system, excellent driver safety features. I'm glad I'm back in a Honda and I'm sure I'll be keeping this one for a while. One thing Honda could do in future Passports... add a "bird's eye view/overhead view" camera. That's the one thing I miss about the Chevy Equinox. It's such a useful feature for parking. Other than that I have absolutely no complaints about my Passport.

Passport to Fun & Great Value

Paul Johnston, 01/15/2020
2019 Honda Passport EX-L 4dr SUV AWD (3.5L 6cyl 9A)

Purchased my 2019 Passport on December 31 at closeout pricing. I went with Edmunds recommended trim level EX-L. About the only item I wish it had was the heated steering wheel, but I didn't want to pay the extra 4-6K to go up to the Touring or Elite trim. The EX-L has everything else I wanted or needed including Honda Sensing, leather seating, power rear lift gate, large touchscreen, and Apple CarPlay. I also went with AWD for possible future light-duty off-roading and the ability to tow 5K weight as opposed to 3.5K towing on the 2WD models. I can see why Edmunds rates this their top choice for midsize SUV. This car is very quiet, powerful, comfortable, and functional. I love the huge cargo area and hidden storage under the back deck. Visibility is great and the controls are easy to find and use. Some reviewers had negative comments on the push-button shifter. Yes, it's different than a single shift lever, but I find it easy to use. The shift buttons are clearly marked, and there's little chance of accidentally ending up in the wrong gear which can happen more easily with a shift lever. Re. the ride - some reviewers didn't like it. I'm not sure what they are expecting or used to, but there is nothing wrong with the ride on the Passport. Sure you're gonna feel it going over large bumps and potholes, but the alternative is an older tuna-boat domestic vehicle with no feel for the road whatsoever. The Passport has a good solid feel and the ride is as smooth as you'd ever expect in a mid-size SUV. The engine has a "normal" mode and an "eco" mode, and the ride has a "drive" mode and a "sport" mode. You can mix and match to get 4 different feels to the power and ride. For example its powerful and firmer in "normal/sport", and more staid and conservative in "eco/normal". I've pretty much stuck with "eco/normal" for economy, but it's nice to know you can go sporty and powerful if you want. This is a great choice for a mid-size SUV. Happy shopping!

Bought a Sport AWD since I was looking for the least expensive way in to a new Passport. No sunroof, leather, power seats, or touchscreen w/Apple CarPlay. Still has the nice V6, good 9 speed, and full suite of safety features. Not a huge fan of the 20 inch wheels on a vehicle touted as being more off road capable. Might have to get 18’s and tires with more sidewall some day. In the meantime stay off those curbs! Vehicle rides very nicely - quiet and smooth. (I came out of an Audi). Very happy with the purchase so far. Oh, and the push button shift doesn’t seem to bother me at all...

Bought a 2019 passport. We have used it for 4,00 miles now. It's a nice car but has a few things that bother me. One is the interface with my I-Pods. I have a 2012 pilot that works great. The passport will play the I-Pod but you can not search or change what is playing. You have to disconnect the I-pod set it to what you want to play, start it, then plug it in. Then it will play what you started. One of the other things is the auto braking, it will activate at times from oncoming traffic. Most times just a wiggle of the steering wheel, a beep , and a warning light that says BRAKE. But at times it will aggressively apply the brakes for no reason. This has almost got me rear ended. I personally do not like this at all. Another thing is at times when my wife is using it it will not start unless she presses very hard on the brake. The car gets good gas milage. We just returned from vacation and it stayed at 25 1 MPG the whole time. Wind noise is ok. Handles well. Seats are comfy.could be more peppy at partial throttle but goes well when pushed. Interior is nice and roomy. Keyless entry doesn't work as well as the maximas we have owned in past. We have a 2012 pilot we bought new and still have. We believe the passport will prove to be a keeper also if we can get the little bugs out of it. I recommend this vehicle. After more months of use and miles we still like our passport a lot. The annoying auto brake still will often warn us and sometimes actually apply the brakes as we approach oncoming traffic on two lane roads mostly. Funny that it is almost always a white car or truck approaching that triggers the event. Having the warning flash on the dash and the steering wheel shake is one thing, but having the car apply the brakes is another. A couple of times this almost caused me to be hit from behind. It can be turned off but that sort of defeats the safety of it all. Over all a very good car.

I have a 2019 honda passport, and I love it. Although the push buttons were different I have grown to love them. The ride and noise level is very comfortable. I am getting 24 mpg in the CITY. I have not had any issues with my passport and I am very happy with it. I do not have nav, nor did I want it. I choose the sport because it has just what is needed and less electronics to go wrong. I would highly recomment this suv.

I love almost everything about my Passport. The handling is super agile and feels like a luxury ride. The connectivity and layout of everything is very functional and easy to get use to. I was worried first about the push button transmission, but honestly you get use to it in a few days. There are lots of fail safes just in case you forget to put it into park. Good Save, Honda. This car has so many gadgets and is a dream to drive. I drive a lot in town and am getting about 19MPG, but on the highway I get about 26MPG. The one thing I don't like is the adaptive cruise control is not the smoothest, and doesn't work at low speeds. Sometimes on cruise, I find the Passport exceeding the speed I set by 10 or more miles per hour, so I have to break sometimes when going down hill using cruise control.

Awesome 2 row SUV

I was looking for a mid sized SUV with 2 rows and more room than some of the SUV's in the segment that are either small or have weak engines. We camp alot, fish, throw a kayak or two on the roof, have a dog, etc and I wanted some extra room in the cargo area. This car is the perfect size for these kind of needs, is spacious throughout, has a great V6 engine (forget those whinny turbo 4 setups, will present problems later), the Nav/Entertainment system is awesome and just about everything in the car makes sense...what you would expect from Honda. It's not luxurious, our Enclave is, so is the RDX I test drove, but I wasn't buying the Passport for luxury...space, value and practicality are its advantages. I test drove the car and took one home off the showroom floor - Lunar Silver metallic with the black molding, looks awesome. AWD, Touring pkg, has everything you need, price point is reasonable. For Northern NJ folks, Honda of Hackettstown was great to deal with, easy process, great staff, see Josh, best car sales consultant I have worked with. They have free oil changes for life of car, since I bought it, can't beat that. I grew up driving Hondas & Acuras, test drive the car, you will love it.

2019 Passport Engine issue, only 750 miles on it

I bought a new 2019 Honda Passport a couple months ago, and noticed it idling rough when I started it. Soon after, about every warning light came on, indicating engine, transmission and brake system issues. Long story short, it’s been at the Dealers for 5 days now, and the tech is saying it appears to be a head gasket issue, and are waiting on Honda’s “permission” to take it apart to inspect for damage! So much for Honda quality, and why does the dealer have to have “permission”? I will update, when I get a solid answer, and it’s repaired. Not impressed with Honda In general, and the dealership. ** Update 7-30-22. No problems since last update, getting 25-26 mpg on the road, low 20s in town. Liking the vehicle more and more as time goes by, at least barring anymore issues. ** Update 8-30-21. AC quit working over the weekend, took it in, found out my AC compressor needs replaced. And it will take four days to get it in. And I only have 3,600 miles on it. So much for Honda quality! And not impressed with the service tech at the dealership. I think I have bought my last Honda! **Update 2-13-21, no problems since original head gasket issue. Like the vehicle, great gas mileage for the size...averaging around 22-23 mpg in mixed use. *Update 5-7-20, the head gasket issue, turned out being a head issue (“porous casting”), which required the replacement of the head. The dealership had the vehicle for a total of 18 days, part of which was due to waiting on Honda to give permission to do the replacement, and other procedures. I have had it back now for a while, and appears to be running fine. The dealership told me this was the first issue of this type they have had on both the Passport or Pilot. Lucky me! Update 2-1-24, no problems since the initial engine issue. I’m getting 18/19 mpg in city driving, and 23/24 on the road trips. Update 8-1-24. I decided to raise my overall score to 4 stars, based on the past few years good experience. No problems what so ever, since you initial engine issue. Update 1-17-25 continues to perform, with no reliability issues. My only complaint, other than the “ride” with the orginal low profile tires, is having to replace my brake fluid at 20,000 miles, due to it being 5 years old. Otherwise, all is good.

Passport Touring: Love the car... not the wheels

The car itself is awesome. If you live in or frequent urban areas... get a wheel & tire replacement package. Or a lower trim. Owned only 3 weeks and already had curb damage necessitating tire replacement. I sprung for the Touring model with the extra equipment -- not realizing it had smaller sidewalls (265/45R20 vs 245/50R20). I feel like the smaller sidewalls give less confidence in tight quarters, as you're going to pop a wheel easier. Might have stuck with an EX-L (or Sport) had I known this going in.

Buy the EXL trim. It's loaded, and Touring and Elite aren't worth the extra money. Bought mine for almost $3,000 under MSRP, and it was every dollar. Biggest pluses for me: giant cargo space and overall roominess. Drove 950 miles fully loaded to Myrtle Beach and got 25 mpg. A bonus: plenty of giddy up in the 280 hp V6.

Looking for a two-row SUV and really liked the passenger room & storage Passport offered. Very quiet ride. Push button shift was a little strange, but after a week it becomes second nature. Black car with black trim & wheels is very attractive. Perfect car for us!

The SUV that does it all

Own the Elite (4WD top of line) 2019 passport for 6 months and could not be happier. It's got power, style, great looks and functionality. Leather looks great and feels nice. Cabin is roomy, luxurious and equipped with everything you could possibly want. The main display is visually clear and easy to navigate and works seamlessly with Apple Car Play allowing Google Maps/Waze and Tidal. I like this car much more than the Pilot. It's a little smaller which makes it nimbler, but importantly it rides higher off the ground which gives it a more commanding view. The Passport is a very responsive car - to some maybe too responsive - as 9 gears sometimes feel like a stick shift drive. That is to say I can manipulate gears to slow up/down in response to exact pressure on gas. If you like that kind of thing then this car will really work for you. In comparison to other SUV's, yes maybe you can find an SUV that's faster, or one that's better off road, or one that might offer higher interior refinement and luxury , but I defy you to find one that does all of these things and really well AND at the excellent price point of the Passport.

After reading the reviews, I decided to test drive the new Honda Passport. My first visual impression was good. The stance and overall look was better than I had expected. The reworked grill, improved ground clearance and wheel design work well together. And the shortened length also give it a sportier look as well. The test drive was just as good. Lots of interior room, great visibility behind the wheel, comfortable ride. The steering, braking and acceleration were all up to par. Using the sport option on the shift button works flawlessly, fast and smooth, with a slight growl while stepping on the gas petal. It was fun! I will be buying a passport in May, and plan on visiting the high sierras more often for fishing and off road trips. I have been driving Honda’s for over 20 years now, and I’m looking forward to this new model. For what it’s worth, that’s my take. Way to go Honda!

Fixes everything we didn’t like about our Forester

We had a ‘17 Forester that we wanted to love, really, but just never made peace with the awful CVT, limited towing capacity, and uncomfortable front seats. The Passport addresses these issues and more. We have put about 2,500 miles on our Passport Elite and absolutely love it. The space, the power, the smoothness...it’s perfect for us. We tow a small trailer (1500#) that really taxed the Forester, but the Passport barely notices. Fuel economy while towing has been a pleasant surprise, too, as I expected to take more of a hit...we averaged 22mpg towing a trailer with a 16 foot canoe tied to the rack up top. That’s only 2mpg less than we were averaging with the Forester, but the difference in reserve capacity is immense. I also appreciate the transmission’s ability to downshift and hold lower gears when towing and driving in the mountains...it’s really nice to either let sport mode hold the gears or use the paddle shifters to maintain speed downhill. One complaint I have is the active safety — it’s too sensitive and prone to false alarms, but it’s not a deal breaker (and can be turned off). Otherwise, we are loving the purchase! Update at 11,000 miles: My initial review still holds...we love this truck (car?) and have put over 11,000 miles on it in just 7 months...and it’s never driven Monday thru Friday because I have an EV to commute in, so these are all weekend/trip miles. A significant portion of the miles so far have been towing our trailer and the Passport continues to impress. Tows wonderfully and the gas mileage has been really good (20+) when loaded. I wish the wheels were 18” with a higher profile sidewall...the 20s worry me off road (maybe that’s just psychological), but the 20s generally ride fine and the standard tires are quiet and capable. Snow traction has been great - AWD and all season tires have been unstoppable in light snow (less than 12”). The only real negatives are related to the safety systems - the amount of false alarms with the forward collision mitigation system and lane departure system are annoying. The adaptive cruise Is not very refined - taking too long to resume speed and braking too aggressively at the last minute. Otherwise, we love our Passport!

Bought a 2019 Passport Touring. When it was delivered, it had the wrong interior door panel on the front passenger side, and two dents in the hood. The dealership has been trying to fix it, but American Honda will NOT let them order the correct part for the door or the hood. What kind of service is this?! All-in I'm paying approx $70,000 CAD for this vehicle and they've yet to deliver the entire vehicle and it's now July 2020!!!!

Infotainment-Safety Severe Issues

IA, 01/06/2020
2019 Honda Passport Elite 4dr SUV AWD (3.5L 6cyl 9A)
37 of 46 people found this review helpful

Potential customers be aware of infotainment issues!!! DO NOT BUY THIS CAR!!! After less than 500 miles a crackling noise freezing the infotainment started when hitting a bump, along with a nauseating chemical smell. Took the car for repair and was told that they tightened some lose parts and the car should be fine. It all got worse after, with the exception of the chemical smell that luckily disappeared. Couple of hundred miles after the all kind of problems appeared: the break light warning would come up along with the crackling noise and the car would slow down on its own, the speedometer would black out, the infotainment including the rear view camera would shut off for long periods and would not start again, the infotainment would freeze and not shut down. Took the car back for service and was told that they need to replace the entire infotainment unit, which was backordered for 4 weeks. Then I was told that Honda is aware of the issue and that is working on a real solution that would need to replace an entire har was with electrical wires. But the worse part is trying to ask for my rights from Honda. Never before have I been treated worse as a customer by the Honda USA customer “service” employee that was assigned to my case. He denied any safety issue, lied to me stating that my car has not been serviced before, lied about Honda knowing that this is a problem, lying that Honda is working on a solution, ignored the unresolved problems, did not care at all on what I was talking about, refusing to escalate the issue to a supervisor and just because he can hide behind anonymity threatened me and hung up the phone. There is a class action lawsuit against Honda. If you also have the problem please add your complaints to the NHTSA site. Honda and it’s employees have to stop treating customers like they are idiots. I had 2 Honda’s in the past, but there is now way I will ever buy one again. Honda and its customer disservice is the worse in corporate America. Not only they don’t admit the obvious but their philosophy is to insult the customers as if they are crazy, even if in my case I told him that I had some videos showing the issues. I wish Honda in Japan could take notice of the disgusting service Honda USA is providing, tarnishing the brand.

I've owned a Touring model for 4 months now and could not be happier. Plenty of power, runs smooth, power everything. The AWD system works great! The stereo is awesome. Gets the same mpg as my last two 3-series BMWs. If you are looking for something more advanced and well made than an entry-level SUV and don't want a wimpy 4-cyl, a turbo or a CVT transmission, and want better reliability that the US brands, the Passport beats the pants of the Same-Engine-and-Transmission since 2010 4Runner! UPDATE: 16 Months of Ownership: I'm still loving my Passport! I've added some 18" wheels with A/T tires, upgraded the speakers for an awesome music experience, taken it on several long trips (500 and 700 miles) and it is smooth quiet and powerful, and still don't miss my Beemers...! UPDATE: 52 Months of Ownership: still loving it, the vehicle has been virtually trouble-free, still love driving it and have no plans to replace it!

2019 Passport is roomy and comfortable for all passengers. Provides plenty of headroom front and back. It has loads of storage space behind the second row of seats. With second row down the cargo space is cavernous. Second row floor is flat. It provides comfortable floor space for all three second row passengers. The ride is smooth and quiet with plenty of power for merging or passing. The 9-speed transmission is exceptionally smooth. It uses regular gas producing mileage slightly better than the ratings. The engine stop/start feature is smooth and quiet. The tech is very intuitive and responsive. Interior materials quality is superb. I would expect the Passport to exhibit typical Honda reliability. Highly recommend this SUV.

Comparison of wheel and tire size on trim levels

DenverM, 09/12/2019
2019 Honda Passport Touring 4dr SUV AWD (3.5L 6cyl 9A)
20 of 25 people found this review helpful

This is a response to one reviewer who wrote, "I sprung for the Touring model with the extra equipment -- not realizing it had smaller sidewalls (265/45R20 vs 245/50R20)." The Sport and E-XL trim levels have 8" wide wheels, while the Touring and Elite trim levels have 8.5" wheels. That is why the tire sizes are different, with the former having 245mm wide tires, while the latter has 265mm wide tires. The next numbers in the tire sizes give the ratio of sidewall height to tire width, so the Touring and Elite tire sidewalls are 45% of 265mm, while the Sport and E-XL tires are 50% of 245mm. This results in the two different tires having nearly identical diameters (29.6" and 29.4" - check it for yourself here: https://tiresize.com/calculator/ ). So the sidewall height is essentially the same for all four trim levels. The wider tires of the Touring and Elite might provide better ability to withstand a bump or pothole, not worse.

Don't get the ventilated seats

One of the two things I wanted on my new vehicle was ventilated or cooled seats. I was looking forward to not sticking or sweating on the leather seats in the summer. Because I purchased the passport in March and I foolishly trusted Honda would produce a quality feature I didn't test them out much at the time. Now that summer is here, I have discovered there is absolutely no discernable airflow. Without some airflow there's no way it's going to help with comfort in hot temperatures. I even put an extremely light feather on the seat on the highest setting and not even a flicker of movement from the feather. If there is no airflow on high, what is the point of the medium and low settings? There is a very, very slight feeling of coolness once the cabin cools off, but it's so slight I'm not really completely sure it's really there. Sadly the technicians at Honda have no idea if this truly how these are supposed to work. All they can do is pull out another passport and tell me if this vehicle works the same it must be how they were designed. If you want ventilated or cooled seats, get something other than a Honda.

I never give full stars in a review as I believe nothing is "perfect". I love my Passport. I've had it for 3 months. Things I love: The seats are so comfy. The cabin is spacious and roomy. The cargo is bar none. The start stop (idle stop) is very good--almost too good. I've seen it on other SUVS where it barely worked, or had to have all these other factors in place before it worked. Not the Passport--it WORKS all the time. Good smooth ride. Nice and high drive. You are in command in this vehicle. Things I don't like: Radio is glitchy. Acceleration punch is more like a tap. Safety features over sensitive at times--example, an oncoming truck the other side of a 2 lane road is not a BRAKING moment. Those things are irritating, but I get it. We are in this transitional times in cars where there is almost "too" much for the car to handle. It's to be expected. Can't run to the dealer every time your radio display "freezes" up. These are computers folks, and we have to expect these issues. Just make sure to purchase the warranty package. The finance guy told me that dealers now a days don't even make their money on the car purchase. It's the service fees and the labor rates that make the dealerships the most money. Get the $3k plan that will cover it all. If you intend on keeping the car for longer than the manufacturer warranty (usually 3 years/36 months), its a purchase you have to make. Sucks that it's like that these days, but just the reality.

We have been a Honda Family since 1977 with the purchase of our Carolina Yellow Civic HB. Passport...from the start when backing into our driveway we would hear a "clunk" while turning the wheel to the right. It wasn't from shifting to reverse, it was after moving that it would make the sound and you could feel it in the steering wheel. Of course the dealer could not duplicate it and that was frustrating, but the service dept is one of the best around. The other problem and what was a major decision maker in getting rid of the vehicle was this: Driving home from shopping, doing between 55-60mph and on a two lane rd that merges into four lanes....sunny day, no rain, no clouds and we make a slight turn from a two lane highway to four lane when the Passport just simply SLAMS the brakes on! My wife says "What happened, why did you hit the brakes like that"? I immediately looked in my rear view mirror to make certain I wasn't going to be rear ended and thankfully the car behind me was about 1/8 mile back and the Passport finally started to accelerate again. I had never taken my foot off of the gas and there was nothing in the road ahead of us. I told my wife that if we had been on I95 in traffic we would have created one heck of a disaster, I'm talking a multiple pile up. It never happened again at that spot or any other, but we lost faith in that vehicle and simply traded it in not wanting to fight the dealer. It is a wonderful driving vehicle, quiet, tons of power when needed, looks great and you feel safe with all that metal around you. Very comfortable, loads of room, BUT we just never trusted it after that. The "clunk" finally resolved itself after a few months. There were a few other things that really bothered us....lane keep made you feel like a ping pong ball....I've been in a Kia Soul that was much better at keeping the car centered....we didn't care for the auto stop, nor the placement of warning light for the side mirror (Blind Spot Warning)....it should be in the mirror, not on the plastic inside the vehicle.....that made no sense. The push button is nice, but the hesitation from Park to Drive or any other gear is terrible. We Love you Honda, but you need to get your act together!

One month into ownership, like the vehicle but compared to my 2017 Pilot EXL I traded, the Passport has a firmer ride. Suspect that is because of the 20” wheels. That’s my only complaint, otherwise it’s a great vehicle. Don’t need the third row, don’t want the DVD player that is in the Pilot Touring. Really like the upgraded sound system, roominess of the cabin and even the 9 speed transmission. Much improved over the 9 speed in my 2015 MDX. Very happy with my Passport Touring.

I’ve had my Passport Elite for a couple weeks now. I love the way it drives.. somewhat trucklike but also smooth on the highway and surprisingly nimble. It seems well made and feels solid when driving. The interior could be a little flashier but I also appreciate the simplicity. Overall I’m pleased with the vehicle and look forward to driving it more.

Just got a week ago and drives well. Only thing wish Honda had real armrest instead of fold downs attached to seats. Other than that, do not like button shifters in center - would rather have old school shifter. Understand this is change of the times but I do not feel as safe or natural shifting like this.

Love the new passport. Fits and feels like the Pilot but better, handles better. The controls took a little getting used to compared to our old 2010 Pilot but now 3 months later I can say we love the car. Feels about the same room in the front as the Pilot and a little roomier in the back seat. No 3rd row and the storage also feels the same. I am very happy with the Passport, would buy another. NOTE: we did have one problem with the audio and the CarPlay screen. The speakers started with a tick noise and all the screens went blank/black. We took it to local dealer who did a reset on the system and we have been trouble free!

It's been a month sincing leasing the Honda Passport EXL (2WD) after trading in my 2016 Honda Civic Touring sedan. The car was perfect except for two items; as I age the low seat level was getting annoying along with the seats being uncomfortable after several hours of driving. Those items were alleviated after moving back up to an SUV (my daughter still drives my 02 RAV4). If I had to knitpick the Passport adjustable arm rest are too thin, the transmission is not as smooth as the Civic's CVT, and the severe drop in MPG (Civic 40+) takes some getting used to to ;) . In addition, all the lower models come standard with grey wheels which are just ugly, especially with a white exterior. I average 22-23 city and 26 highway using mid grade gas. Looking to see if that changes when I fill up with super prior to my planned 250 mile trip next month. Overall I could not be happier with my choice.

Great vehicle so far with some small issues

Really wanted a telluride but there's none available my Kia dealership also sells Honda's and I like the way the passports looked a lot. Very roomy, plenty of power, off road capable enough for what I'll use it for. The forward collision is extremely iffy, it will go off if your going up a hill or if there's a shadow on the road, which wouldn't be a big deal except it also hits the brakes when this happens. It's a common problem with these that you can Google. Maybe they'll fix it with a patch somehow. This is my 46th vehicle and first ever new Honda. So we will see how it goes. But so far so good. Ex-l is the way to go. You get just about everything for thousands less than the elite. Right now these are the 60th best selling SUV for 2019 so dealers are willing to deal. Traded in my 2018 f150 on this, so anything after that deathtrap will be better. Update: to add to all my other woes with this vehicle now the radio constantly pops even with the stereo off it still does it. With the radio on it pops and constantly stutters, whether I'm using Sirius, fm, or I heart radio. Just constant pops from the speakers. I think there's something wrong electronically with this vehicle. I've told the dealer twice and they reset the system and error codes due to the forward collision blind spot monitoring errors but it continues to have issues with that as well. Update: After 1 year this is the worst vehicle I've ever owned. All problems continue. I've now looped Honda into the problems as well. Every time I go to the dealer it's the same thing with the same results. If I get in an accident and get killed it will be because of this vehicle. Every person I see with a Passport I talk to them and all have the same issues. I will never own another Honda in my life and given that this is my 49th vehicle that's saying something. I also make sure I tell everyone the same thing. DO NOT BUY HONDAS. Update: After nearly being killed dozens of times, the vehicle is gone. Sold it back to the dealer. Honda does not care about their customers or products. Never buy a Honda. Ever. I wish I could give it zero stars.

I am really happy with my new Honda Passport. Yes, I just got the vehicle, February 1, 2019, nevertheless, from the time I test drive, I was in love with the vehicle. The driving was smooth, even in the city bumpy ride. It is comfortable. I can not mention the seat in the back, nobody has been there yet.

Nice SUV with two deal breakers

Really like this car except two things that might not be a big deal for many people but for me they are just deal breakers. One is the gear shifter that had buttons and you will never be able to change gears without looking at them. Yes, I know that it's not something that needs to be operated often but it annoys me a lot! Another is... gauge panel with relatively small digital only speedometer placed in the middle of two big gauges, of which one is the fuel gauge! Really, Honda, who came up with this "bright" idea for fuel gauge taking almost 50% of the panel area? I want a traditional handle or at least a bar showing speed and range but not just a number.

Two row full size SUV, plenty room for cargo and very comfortable for any length of time in the vehicle. Easy to drive, good mileage, and looks sharp. Good gas mileage thus far around 22 mpg overall. Wife loves vehicle also. She said it is very easy to drive.

Maps unreliable

Navigation maps are so very outdated. I mean years outdated. Dealership wants to charge a fee to update navi in brand new vehicle I’ve had for less than a month. Ridiculous. The Navi was one of two top reasons for choosing the touring. I feel suckered.

Honda Passport 2019

Roomy overall, more so than the CRV. Power is there. Push button shift. Something to get used to. Good driving response; not as quick as some. Lots of cargo space. Seats fold down in a much flatter profile . Very good overall visibility. Hondas plain Jane approach stands. Thats OK, improvements can be made in terms of better usability features. We do have the technology, wish Honda could incorporate it more. Great safety, and reliability tests still to be completed.

Drives like a champ

I purchased a 2019 EXL to get the leather, safety and technology upgrades from more basic models. Traded in a 2007 Tahoe that had no technology and rode like you were on a garbage barge. Price was right and well below most lot of the other mid-size two row alternatives, yet still contained many upgrades. V-6 has plenty of punch and no hesitation even from a complete stop. The engine turning off at stop lights and the lack of a stick take some getting used to. Only have about 6,000 miles on it. Made a 2500 mile roundtrip to SLC and it handled the climbs and winding roads like a champ. Very satisfied with the purchase. Has not been in yet for any work, not even an oil change. It is the finest SUV I have ever owned in this price category and I would recommend it to any empty nesters, singles or small families.

Honda chose to use a tall 20" low profile tire I belive to enhance the look of the vehicle. The ride is stiff and there should be an option for a 18" tire that has a higher sidewall that allows for a softer ride. Park a new Passport right next to a same year Pilot with the EXL package look at them from the rear the pilot blows the passport out of the water with larger more visible lights a better ride . I know the passport is new this year but lets face reality the passport is a pilot with 16 or so inches chopped off the rear end. No I don't need the 3 row seating the pilot offers but the ride is better. I like the passport I just belive the ride would be better with the tires I mentioned the front grill is very plain on the passport as well.
