Currently I have gone 1,900 miles and still have over 1/2 a tank of gas. I may go 5,000 miles on a single tank of gas (7 gallon tank). Mileage is incredible. I plug in a work for free so electricity cost is low. It usually costs $1.40 cents to charge at home and I can travel 50-60 miles per charge. My daily work commute is 56 miles and I make it 99% of the time on all electric. The gas motor will turn on if the battery is fully charged and then you apply regenerative brakes, thus overcharging the batteries. To prevent this Honda reduces regen and turns on the motor. To avoid this just use the brakes, no regen, for about a mile. I love this car. It is quiet, big, fast enough, and gets crazy gas mileage. I own a Volt, but the Clarity PHEV is better in most ways. Update: 10/12/21 I have 56,000 miles on my Clarity. My lifetime average is over 199.99 mpg. That is the highest the read goes to. I probably average between 200-300 mpg. I love this car and will keep it until it dies. I have had no mechanical issues and it still performs like new. I have had 3 rockets hit my windshield and it is cracked. It will cost $900 to install and recalibrate the camera. The PHEV Clarity is really one of the best plug in hybrids on the market. Update 10/15/2022. 76,000 miles. Zero maintenance issues. I replaced my windshield for $1,200. Still has a lifetime average over 200 mpg. I drove 2,500 on a vacation and only charged twice, the rest of the time burning gas. Gas average was 52 mpg. I did purchase a spare tire after I got a flat on the freeway. The car is really saving me money with $6 gas in California. I can literally go months before I have to refill it’s small 7 gallon gas tank. As complex as this drive train is, it runs perfectly so far.

Pro: I've owned my Clarity Touring for four months now (2300 miles) and taken it on several 300+ mile trips as well as lots of in-town driving. I feel like a genius for having bought one. The PHEV is the best of both worlds, so I don't mind paying a little for gas on a long trip (even though Hybrid Charging does save on the gas, as does its native 40+ miles per gallon. Of all the vehicles in this price range I've seen around the charging stations, my Clarity Touring is by far the roomiest, most cushy, comfortable, well-built of the lot. Has enough pep to make merging no big deal and the updated tech/safety features are considerable. I don't mind the wheel covers or the fact that there is no volume knob on the infotainment console (my iPhone doesn't have one either). Voice commands, Apple Carplay and Android Auto both work like a charm, and the app, while not super robust, works well enough. I LOVE THIS CAR. Con: The only drawback to buying this car is that Honda doesn't seem to adequately train dealers in how to support them. (Indeed, I'm not sure all dealers even know they are a Honda product with the lack of marketing and distribution!) I am not confident that my local dealer knows a lot about these cars or any quirks they may have, and since Honda has put little effort in educating them, it is not surprising that a few folks are unhappy. I feel for the guys who have had issues that aren't getting resolved, but I would point the finger directly at Honda support and the dealers. Shame on them for not supporting a very high quality product that could otherwise have a much wider market! UPDATE: Clara-T is now almost a year old, with 6k miles. All the hybrid miles are highway (long trips) and do net me over 40 mpg. The really great thing is the in-town range is enough that I can use only electric power. I charge at night so I get those electrons almost free. It is a solid, luxurious, 5 passenger car that makes me look and feel like a genius for snagging one. No issues to date. I still love this car! UPDATE 2021: I still love this car and feel like a genius for buying it. It’s the best car I have ever owned. I’m loving the money I’ve saved, too. UPDATE 2022: Still LOVE THIS CAR! Due to COVID disruption in my life, it only has 15k miles on it, 90% EV. No problems whatsoever. I think the geniuses at Honda America were so wrong to discontinue such a brilliant car, especially now that EVs are really gaining traction (sorry, pun) in the market. I think that the market value of my used Clarity PHEV in these admittedly wacko times makes this the smartest car investment I have ever made.

Love, Love, Love this car. Once you get past the skirts on the rear wheel wells (which apparently many people like) there really is nothing not to like. I mean, we got the $7500 tax credit, and have put over 5000mi since December and have probably filled the 7gal tank about 8x. When on the highway I’ve found I’ll get overall better mpg if I put it in hv mode, leaving the battery charged for when I’m doing more city or stop and go driving. It’s kind weird seeing the distance left going up as i coast or slightly break but who could hate that? The car is very comfortable inside however it does annoy me a little not having the driver side lumbar support but nothing is perfect. My only real regret is that we didn’t get it sooner. - VERY HAPPY CUSTOMER

The Clear Choice is Clarity

We have owned a Volt for 3 years and our other car was totaled and needed to buy a new car. With GM abandoning the Volt, we looked at all plug-in hybrid options. By far the best choice is the Honda Clarity, and we even like it better than the Volt. It gets about the same electric range (about 47 miles) and total range (400 miles), but it is way more spacious and comfortable. The tech is impressive, The seats are incredibly comfortable. The ride is very smooth. And above all it's great for the environment!

I’ve owned my Clarity for 6 months and this is one of the best cars I’ve ever bought. Driven >6000 miles on 21 gallons of gas. 85% of my driving is on EV because the car averages 47 miles on battery. I live in New England so the car has gone though a winter. Like all EVs, battery range drops in the winter but I still got ~35 miles of EV range. On HV the car gets 42 mpg. The car is very comfortable and hugs the road. Not a sports car, but that’s not why I bought it. Car seats 5 comfortably and has a big trunk. The deals are amazing. The is one of the least expensive sedans on the road. I’m sorry nick had a bad experience but visit insideevs and look at the Clarity section. Lots of very happy clarity owners. Update: now 18 months in and still love the car. Very comfortable and powerful enough for me. I’ve gone on six road trips and get >40 mpg with passengers and luggage. EV covers my commute so I’m about 80% on battery. This car is a hidden gem. Too bad no one really knows the value. Update: 4 1/2 years in and still loving the car! If you are looking for a used PHEV, this is the one to get. It's still better than most PHEVs on the market. Update #2: almost 6 years in now and my biggest complaint is that my kids refuse to let me drive it! It’s our family go-to car for everyone. I do an annual oil change and after 55k miles getting new tires. That’s it for maintenance. If you are looking and find one used at a decent price then buy it - you won’t be disappointed. It’s still the best PHEV on the market.

Battery performance in the cold

In my first review I wrote: "The big question is WHY HONDA WON'T SHIP the Clarity to MN?" Now approaching 10,000 miles I can write that the answer is cold weather. Even in my attached garage, my car normally charges to 30 empg which is a significant decline from warm weather charging. Still, most days driving from suburb to city and back, I often use no gasoline. Strategic grocery shopping where free chargers are available can help boost my range but increasingly I have to switch from EV to HV mode. I estimate my total gas consumption to be 30 gallons in 9600 miles so still not bad at all but the burning is significantly higher in the winter, just because my overnight charge is so much less. Probably because of the mfg tires, traction isn't great and the inability to shift to a lower gear without triggering regenerative braking has made it impossible to attack steep, slippery streets. Thankfully my area is largely flat. I have learned that when approaching an ice covered intersection, using the regenerative braking paddles bring me to a stop FAR safer and faster than just applying the brakes. When I accelerate while burning gas, the engine whines like it's a two-cylinder. Switching to Sport mode helps with this but then I am burning more gas. It's still a comfortable ride in most conditions and there is plenty of back-seat space and a very generous trunk.

Big Red (as I call her) suffered damage when she was rear-ended in September 2023. We were apart for 3 months while they found parts, I battled the insurance company and they put her back together. 90-days and $13k later, she is back and better than ever. The comfort, reliability, looks and quality remains true. As she is the Crimson Sunrise Red, a full detail was part of her time in 'rehab', and the compliments just keep coming. If you can find one for a decent price that has been maintained, now is the time to discover what a full-size dose of Clarity will do for you.

This car has exceeded my expectations. I mostly drive it in EV mode around town. When I go for longer trips, I switch it into Hybrid. In regards to the above review that gave it a 1, my car stays in EV mode until it gets down to only two bars of battery life left, then it switches itself to hybrid. When the temperature outside is around 0 F, the car also turns itself into hybrid mode. I live in the mountains, and was surprised by how well it handles in the snow/ice with good snow tires. I have this car for about 9 months and 4,000 miles.

I have owned a 2019 Clarity for more than a month, about 2,800 miles. No issues so far; the car works exactly as expected. I use all electric for daily commute and have taken a couple extended road trips in HV mode. All together I am averaging more than 100 mpg so far, and that only goes up with more EV commuting weeks under my belt. Early bugs you may see described online for 2018 (e.g., charging problems, software glitches, etc.) appear to have been worked out for 2019. A notable exception is that preconditioning via the HondaLink app became unavailable for two separate stretches of about a week until being fixed by app updates; it seem to be working now. (Hence 4 stars for technology, as well as for the awkward volume control universally mentioned in other reviews.) I have had zero issues with the car itself. With pricing and rebates available (I am in NY), the deal is simply too good not to take! This is just so much car and technology for about $23K out the door. Just read up on how the drive options work; the few complaints I’ve seen in reviews appear not to understand how best to use the car. (E.g., don’t drive the battery down to 10% unless you are arriving to a charger imminently; instead use HV mode well before getting to that point.) Updated after more than 1 year of ownership and 15,000 miles: I still love the car and have zero regrets. I have had no problems - the car just works. I will intend to continue to own this car for the long term. Battery life is unchanged, and I get mid-50's in upstate NY summer and mid-30's in the heart of winter for miles of range per full charge. Year-round average is probably around 45 miles of range per charge. Gas mileage in hybrid mode on the highway is around 42-44 mpg. Early problems with the app and remote per-conditioning have largely gone away as the app has been updated.

It is roomy, quiet and solid. The gas mileage and electric range numbers live up to the billing. However, I find the front seats to be very uncomfortable. After about 45 minutes behind the wheel, I am squirming. I am 6'0" and 185 pounds. And, of course, the infotainment system is bottom shelf stuff.

I have had my Clarity for 2300 miles now. It is better than I expected in all aspects, they advertised 48 miles of electric range and I get around 55 miles, they advertised 48 mpg of hybrid and I am getting over 50 mpg. very quiet, spacious, comfortable and stylish inside. The only 2 things that I don't like one is the the rear fenders over the rear tires style and the second one is that the side mirrors don't fold in automatically when you park, a lot of cheaper new cars have. Update after 24k miles: everything still as day1. Very happy owning this car.

A excellent car in an age of Automotive Change

LJG500, 05/31/2019
2019 Honda Clarity Plug-In Hybrid 4dr Sedan (1.5L 4cyl gas/electric hybrid CVT)

In an age of gas guzzling SUVs it is a fuel sipping PHEV sedan. With an electric only range that varies from 35-70 miles (depending on the coldness of the weather)- it addresses most people's commutes and then some. In an age where 0-60 times have to be surpassed (for no good reason)- it offers solid performance- particularly in hybrid/sport mode. And in an age that tries to dumb down everything, this car offers driver involvement- whether in the use of safety features or in how the propulsion system works on daily drives. And there are even consumers that don't even know what a PHEV is. For them- this may not be a good fit. The Clarity is luxurious- but that's relative. It is technologically complex- but shares much of its technology with its i-MMD siblings. It is a statement from Honda on its future direction. Consumer Reports doesn't like the Clarity. In part because early on it had software glitches, and being a newer design- some growth pains for some drivers. And while Honda touts it as no compromise- it has compromises. But those compromises are generally quite tolerable and its virtues more than make up for it. But the automotive industry is in relatively rapid transition- and cars like the Clarity will be succeeded fairly soon with even more efficient, higher range/faster charging cars. The question for the consumer is whether it is enough today. Factoring in government tax credits and rebates- I believe the answer is yes- though your mileage may differ...

I would rather own a Clarity than a Tesla

I have been doing research on electric and plug-in hybrid cars for quite some time. We have a Chevy Volt at work that I have driven quite a bit. I am so impressed with my Clarity that I would not trade it for a Tesla. To me, it is the obvious choice. I never use gas, and I do not have range anxiety. Well I do, but it is because it is a challenge for me not to use gas. This car is a hidden gem. I have the base model, and see no sense in the extra money for the touring. The base has Car Play, so there is no need for navigation, the base's seats are leather wrapped with cloth in the center, and who cares about a leather wrapped steering wheel. My wife would like electric seats, but that is not worth $4k. Buy this car, you will not regret it!

Second clarity owned and still my favorite. Not an Escalade big bulky and tons of room BUT I would say my 5’10” /280 lb. Fits well. Only issue is wipers they do not spray as most do they “trickle” and require mor fluid to clean. Ride comfortable trunk can carry Portable Power Wheel chair. Now for the best part—- most of my driving miles are less than 70 miles a trip — in the spring and fall average MPG over 95 MPG. Summer over 60 MPG - winter over 55 MPG… I use excel spreadsheet to track. My last Clarity on 35,000 miles averaged 90 MPG. Only future issues will be AVAILABILITY— this car is driven on the EAST END OF L. I. NY. Where electricity costs from .22 to .24 cents per Kwh.

We love this car. If you live within 20 to 25 miles of your work this is a great vehicle. Until the pandemic, my wife drove this to work every day and in a year’s ownership we only bought gas twice and one of those was because we pushed it so the gas engine would kick in so we could see how that worked. It works great. The Clarity charges overnight in our garage on a regular 110 V outlet and we get 50 miles on a charge. In a few years we will have charging stations everywhere and more electric vehicles but for now this fits the bill.

Had the car for 2.5 months love the quiet ride handling, technology, gas mileage. But 3 times now when the car uses up it battery and switches to gas the car loses power and engine revs really high. Like it switches into neutral while I am trying to drive. Very dangerous situation. Tried once to take it to dealer, they could not replicate. Called Honda and they were extremely dismissive. When googled Honda clarity transmission problems, there are blogs full of this very issue. Please Honda fix it! Some describing some very harrowing experiences.

I live 12 miles from where I work. 24 miles round trip - easily within the Clarity's all electric about 50 mile (in the summer) range. I received mine on Feb 28, 2019. This is the larger and more comfortable of our 2 cars, so we take it on every long trip where it will use gasoline. In Hybrid mode it still gets over 50mpg, usually 60mpg (unless the battery is depleted). Because I use all electric back and forth to work and around locally, I've averaged nearly 190mpg in the first 5500 miles. I needed a car like this, to "walk the walk" of reducing emissions. And, it's a very comfortable, responsive car! I'm very happy with it.

Imagine buying a luxury car for $17,000. The Clarity is the most enjoyable car I have ever brought, and I've bought many. Powerful, quite, smooth, great sound system, good handling, and so inexpensive. Paid $36K for Touring, got 7500 off fed and 2500 state rebate, and then I get 400+ MPG, so I save around $1,000 per year in gas not purchased versus electrons. After 100,000 miles I'll save at least $8K in fuel. Amazing car. Very smart technology, super reliable. I have 16,500 miles on the car have purchsed less than 40 gallons of gas. I just plug in.

Great car - Honda quality gas engine with an electric vehicle (EV) mode to drive 100% electric up to 48 miles per charge. My last (7 gallon) tank of gas I got 148 miles per gallon. I buy renewable energy at 5.5 cents/kwh - which converts to about $1.84/gallon in an mpg calculation. Sweet deal in a real car, not a tiny clown car.

ELECTRIC MILES PER CHARGE

Darrin, 11/11/2020

Overall, I found the car to perform nicely, very comfortable, roomy, and storage space is adequate. My problem with the 2020 Clarity hybrid is when I purchased the car I could charge to 46 miles and get 46 miles travel, 8 months later it only charges to 35 miles and 35 miles travel, ( I am not a lead foot). I have taken the car to the dealer 2x , and they report NO PROBLEMS.

If I wanted a regular hybrid I'd have bought one

This car worked great for about 3 weeks. It ran almost completely on battery, my commute to work is only about 10 miles each way. And then the engine started switching over to gas when there were still at least 20 miles left on the battery. I'm not talking about when it's really cold out, or if I'm accelerating very fast. Regular driving, coasting, slowing down, it would just run on the gas engine, but only intermittently. Some trips to work happen completely on battery, sometimes on gas. I took it to the dealer, only for them to tell me that "it's supposed to do that". Apparently this PLUG IN HYBRID is supposed to switch between gas and battery like... like an Insight, or a Prius. If I wanted a regular hybrid, I would have bought one. If this car is supposed to switch automatically between gas and battery, why is it advertised as an electric car with a gas engine for when the battery runs out? It's like there's no point in me even plugging my car in, it switches between the battery and gas so much that the battery is hardly ever run down. My 20 mile round trip to work might only use 5 miles of battery, and the rest will happen on gas. My question for the dealer is - if it's supposed to happen, why did it not happen once for 3 and a half weeks, then once in February, then not again until April, where it's suddenly happened about 5 times in the last week? This was a horrible purchase. Now I'm stuck with a car that doesn't do what it's advertised, a dealer who is completely unhelpful and thinks I'm making things up, and thousands of dollars in debt for a car I don't want. I should have just stayed with my 12 year old CR-V - at least that one did what it was supposed to. I wish I could return this Clarity, but this will definitely be my last Honda.

If you are the unlucky one to get the High revs and engine turning on constantly while on EV you will be screwed, Honda will deny everything and there will be nothing you can do. Also the cold temperatures will cause the engine to turn on even more and affect the range dramatically even if you live in places like California. I was a big Honda fan, I will never ever buy a Honda just because of the way they are treating us (the ones who have issues).

Leased a Fuel Cell Clarity, good car, but Honda fails...refuse to give loaner cars when hydrogen stations are all offline, and a recall took over 3 months to fix. CS rep has no idea what they are talking about and always "respectfully decline" loaner....Unlike Toyota who calls up my coworker to provides a loaner preemptively...

I leased a Honda Clarity Fuel vehicle. I had nothing but recalls on the hydrogen tank, fuel stack, water pump, main circuit board, and untrained customer service reps. I wasted hundreds of hours dealing with Honda customer service. They always demand that it'll take 24 to 48 hours to call me back and expecting I answer my phone whenever they call back. It's insane to demand customers stand by their phone because customers are to be respected not to be disturbed. They sometimes provide call back number with 909 area code. Yet, that number is never picked up forcing customers to leave a message. It goes on and on playing phone tags. It's insane dealing with a company which refuse to use technology like email, chats, and allow customer service to transfer to the dept. which will help the customer. HONDA IS THE WORST COMPANY I HAVE DELT WITH. STAY AWAY OF YOU'LL BE TORTURED BY THEIR MIS-MANAGEMENT AND OUTDATED OPERATION !!!!!!!!!!

I have about a 70 mile round trip commute. Having Hybrid/Electric flexibility is awesome. I can often charge for free at work but if not no big deal. Bought it when gas was $3.50 and now gas is over $4.00. Saves a ton of money. Charges to full overnight using a regular plug. Costs about $1.75 to charge for 46 miles. Quiet and comfy....just a good solid car. Great cabin and trunk space...pretty cool tech. I wasn't ready for all electric and this was a great pick. Got base model for $29,800 which includes tax title and license. After $7500 fed and $1500 state incentives it drops cost to $21,000. Add on free HOV and regenerative braking during heavy traffic....car is a no brainer

I wanted to get an electric car but had a bit of range anxiety. I decided to get a plug-in hybrid with a long electric range and luckily I discovered the Clarity. I have had the car for almost three months and love everything about it. It is so quite on the highway and comfortable - and I have only filled it up once after a long drive to our cabin.

Last September 2023, I bought a used 2020 Clarity Touring, with 45,000 miles. The car's MSRP shows it has Tire Pressure Monitoring System. True, but only gives a warning when 1 of its tires is low. It doesn't show the tire pressure to each tire. The car is only 3 years old. The main battery only allows 39-40 miles after fully charged. Not 48.

BAD BAD BAD transmission. Stay away

Loved the idea of an electric plug-in hybrid. Had another Honda and thought to give the Clarity a try. The car looks great, interior looks better than most higher priced models. There is plenty of leg room for 5 adults. The electric engine is great. Good torque, quiet. However, the range is very limited. It marketed at close to 50 miles per full charge, but many of us living in the Northeast can attest that the average full charge in the Winter is closer to 25. Which leaves us driving on the noisy gas engine. The transmission is a huge problem. I have had issue with it within the first 2 months, took it to dealership, they claim they couldn't find the issue, they didn't hear any loud noise. Complained to them every time I took the car back to the dealership, they always said everything was fine. Bullshit. The gas engine drives like it has only 2 cylinders trying to do the job of an 8 cylinders engine. It struggles and cannot switch gears, resulting in unusually high rpm when the car is between 15 to 35 mph. The transmission just couldn't get into the next gear. And because there is no stick shift or shift button, you can't even manually shift into gear. I am afraid the gas engine will go as soon as the warranty expires. And it's not like Honda dealership is owing up to this issue anyway. Looking to sell it for either a tesla or a Toyota Hybrid. I think I am done with Honda.

Meet all my expectations and probably more. Lot more room front and back compare to other electric cars. Close to 47+/- miles range on electric alone as advertised. Don't know yet for cold winter. Charge at home garage overnight with regular 120V and most of time good to go. A couple of hours charging at work makes it even better. Have not added gasoline yet after a few weeks. May do that next year if all goes the way it has been. Very nice to drive. Good for mother nature and for driving around. They do not ship it to some states anymore but only to California. I think can order it through dealers. Worth your time to look at it if you have a chance.

We own a 2019 Clarity Touring Edition. It has 20,000 miles on it now and it has been flawless. Literally flawless. We love that we regularly go 500 - 600 miles between fill ups (5 - 6 gallons). That is because we don't put it in hybrid mode unless we are going to be driving over 50 miles. Which brings up a feature I like. I can choose what mode I want to be in depending on the circumstance. On longer commutes I drive in EV mode until the range drops below 20 miles. Then I switch to Hybrid. When I get 20 miles from home I switch back to EV. The drive quality is so much better when your battery is at or about 40% or higher (the car is quieter and accelerates better). In the meantime every time I brake I add range to the battery. When I have 4 adults in the car (and they fit nicely BTW) I use sport mode when I accelerate on to the highway. Owners rarely mention this, but I enjoy the extra torque and driving experience that it offers in that circumstance. Not to mention that the passengers always comment on how quiet and how quick the car is. The lake keep assist and auto follow cruise control can really help the driver relax in traffic and on well stripped 2 lane highways. If perfection is the goal, then Honda should add a front and rear parking sensor and have the touch screen split when either camera comes on instead of covering up the GPS map. After the Federal and State tax incentives this car costs around $28K after tax and license. It is the best car for the money and the best car in class in my opinion.

We bought a one-owner, 2019 Honda Clarity Plug-in Hybrid, and both my husband (an EV skeptic) and I are satisfied with it. It's an attractive car, with lots of space,USB ports, backup camera, etc., and drives beautifully. I have not yet successfully connected my (Android) phone, and I'm not happy that I have to download Android Auto to my phone. But I like that this car will connect to either an iphone or Android. I was able to run several errands this morning (in town) on half a day's charge, and my husband drove to an appointment in the afternoon.
