How strong is the demand for luxury SUVs? So strong that it has branched off into a collection of fastback-style "coupe" SUVs to provide a stylish — yet less practical — alternative to standard versions. The BMW X6 is the originator of the trend, and more than a decade after it debuted, the X6 is still a standout choice among competition from Audi, Porsche and, of course, Mercedes.
Cost to DriveCost to drive estimates for the 2021 BMW X6 xDrive40i 4dr SUV AWD (3.0L 6cyl Turbo gas/electric mild hybrid 8A) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $4.07 per gallon for premium unleaded in Virginia.

Avg. Large SUV
One can never accuse the X6 of getting lost in a crowd. It has one of the most rakish rooflines of all the coupe SUVs, and compared with the X5 on which it is based, the X6's styling cues seem to shout rather than whisper. Fortunately, BMW backs it up with two powerful engine options and a wide array of available performance upgrades. Inside, the X6 is more conservative and emphasizes high-end materials and numerous standard features such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Should you get an X6? Logic says you should get an X5 instead; it's less expensive and more practical. But the whole point of the X6 is to appeal to your emotions, and on that front it's certainly a success.
Which X6 does Edmunds recommend?
Take your pick from the rear-wheel-drive sDrive40i or the all-wheel-drive xDrive40i. These trims come well equipped and are both comfortable and fun to drive on the road. They're also priced well below the V8-powered M50i and give you more budgetary room to tailor your X6 with options such as the Executive package and Driving Assistance Professional package.
BMW X6 models
The BMW X6 is a four-door coupe-style SUV, meaning it has a sporty sloping roofline on a midsize crossover SUV body. It is available in three trims: sDrive40i, xDrive40i and M50i. All models are equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

- Leather upholstery

xDrive40i

M50i
A performance version of the X6 that adds:

5/5 stars, Amazing
CarsAreFun,
M50i 4dr SUV AWD (4.4L 8cyl Turbo 8A)
You may want a-lot of power but you wont need it. And it burbles when you shift at the right moment. Has a-lot of space and the sleek look makes everything look 10 times better. You can gap people easily if you race and it keeps up with a M850 at first. Downside is its not the best for really long road trips for the driver.
5/5 stars, Amazing head-turner design with a powerful engine
Your average guy,
sDrive40i 4dr SUV (3.0L 6cyl Turbo 8A)
I always thought the X6 design is unique, sporty and more aggressive (compared to the traditional boxy SUVs like the X5). I have another midsize SUV to do the task of carrying big boxes and occasional small furniture when helping out friends and relatives move. This X6, however, is for my daily commute and I must say it is absolutely FUN to drive. The 335 hp makes my drive from home to … work (and vice versa) exciting (often times I find myself wanting to drive longer than the usual route! LoL). Thanks to its design, it catches a lot of attention from people on the road and on the sidewalks (let's face it, there's not too many of these coupe-design SUVs/SAVs out there - that including similar designed cars from MB, Porsche, Audi and Jaguar). The trunk cargo space is decent for my family. Without folding the second row seats, we were able to fit 2 large luggage and 3 carry-on rollies for a long weekend getaway. 21/26 mpg is also a plus (my older 2016 GLE only gives me 18/23). I'm a happy camper!
5/5 stars, Fast & Furious (and Beautiful!)
FFinNYC,
M50i 4dr SUV AWD (4.4L 8cyl Turbo 8A)
High quality finishes, incredible and intuitive interface, tight build, sports car handling with SUV ride height. 5L v8 turbo has power to spare and then some. Don’t even need Sport mode but wow! it’s fun when you turn it on.
5/5 stars, Performance Beast
Ricardo,
M50i 4dr SUV AWD (4.4L 8cyl Turbo 8A)
Love the ride, firm but comfortable. Double personality, and never out of power. Fuel economy not as bad for an 8 cylinder: up to 24 mpg of highway drive. Love it !

Compare the BMW X6
BMW X6 vs. Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class Coupe
The GLE Coupe is the closest direct competitor to the X6, but it's positioned a little differently. The only version is called the Mercedes-AMG GLE 53. It has about 100 horsepower more than the X6 sDrive40i and about 100 hp less than the M50i. The GLE Coupe is very comfortable in this middle ground, with more focus on luxury than performance.
BMW X6 vs. Audi Q8
Speaking of style, the Audi Q8 is another fastback luxury crossover that trades some practicality in the name of appearances. It's fun to drive, although the engine came off surprisingly unresponsive in our testing. There are lots of standard features included, such as all-wheel drive, with new ones added for 2021. The Q8 is more practical and comfortable than its looks suggest too.
BMW X6 vs. Porsche Cayenne Coupe
Here's the good: The Cayenne Coupe is the best performer in its class, and it's available in five different trims with distinct personalities. Here's the bad: Base versions don't come with much standard equipment, and higher trims quickly become exorbitantly expensive. The Cayenne Coupe is great behind the wheel, but unless sporty driving is a priority, we recommend another choice.

Should I lease or buy a 2021 BMW X6?
Is it better to lease or buy a car? Ask most people and they'll probably tell you that car buying is the way to go. And from a financial perspective, it's true, provided you're willing to make higher monthly payments, pay off the loan in full and keep the car for a few years. Leasing, on the other hand, can be a less expensive option on a month-to-month basis. It's also good if you're someone who likes to drive a new car every three years or so.
