Yes, I know what the connection is now. After filtering all the "intentional misinformation" for 5 long years from 2 dealerships, I have finally found out what is wrong with these crappy Ford and Mercury vehicles. Your story sound just like mine! You are losing antifreeze because you have a crack in your THERMOSTAT HOUSING. When I was at the Veteran's Ford Dealership in 2010, the service mgr told me to ... kevinw3, You have described my 97 explorer problem exactly. Please give me the details of how you fixed the door handle linkage. Thanks jlsullivan
Hi Kevin, apparently a common problem with this vintage Ford. Hows your radio??
At least I'm not the only one. Just getting ready to tear into the doors, so you're step by step procedure would be good to have on hand if you could send them to me.
I replaced the driver door switch assembly and the same problem remained - I can't unlock any of the door from the driver side. I continued to push the dealer as to what may be the cause and this is what they said: 1) a wire in the door harness must be broken somewhere or 2) the relay located near the rear left wheel well may to out. I have not ... Read More
hello, I'm having the exact same problem on my 2000 Mountaineer. If you could please provide a step by step instructions, that would be great. Thanks!
Hi, I am having the exact problem you described on my 2000 Mountaineer...could you please provide a step by step procedure to correct it? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
Will the unlock button, keypad, or key partially unlock the driver's side door but not go up all of the way? If this is the case, the problem is the door handle linkage is interfering with the unlock linkage which are both attached to the door latching mechanism. I adjusted my door handle linkage to raise it more above the door unlock linkage to remove this interference. If your answers to ... Read More
The problem that I have is not with the actuators but the actual electrical switch - the left unlock does not work but the right one does. I replaced the left door switch panel and still the left unlock switch doesn't work while the right one does. There must be a fuse or relay that is out. Doug
Doug, I have a '97 Mountaineer with the same problem. The problem with my vehicle is that the rivet holding the locking actuator to the door panel fractured and then completely broke. When using the Lock/Unlock button on either door or on my key fob, the actuator does not have the leverage to lock the door, but it has barely enough leverage to unlock the door. Simply, an auto mechanic will ... Read More
I have a 1997 Mercury Mountaineer. The door lock switch in the drivers door will work for locking the doors but will not work for unlocking them. I have replaced the switch panel in the door but that did not fix it. The door lock switch on the passenger side still works for both locking and unlocking all the doors. It is only the drivers side where the unlock for all ... Read More

Newbe here. I just purchased a 1997 Merc Mountaineer, and have a few questions and problems. First of all I would like to know what other years or makes interchange parts with this vehicle. Is there a company that sells " body parts " ( not human ) for this year vehicle? When you start the car the brake lights come on and stay on everytime. I took it to my ... Read More
I have had my 97 Mountaineer for 226,000 miles and the Check Engine light came on at 80,000 miles and the code said EGR valve. I was quoted $400 to fix it because it was inside the engine somewhere. I said the car runs fine. They said don't fix it then. So I haven't - the only problem I have is the check engine (idiot ) light on the dashboard cannot ... Read More
1997 mercury mountaineer 136,000 miles 31-10.5/15 tires a/c compressor runs no matter what you do so winter/summer dose not seem to make much difference i get 13.8 mpg average i have a 3500lbs camper and that dose not make a difference
The dealer is correct - they do light, and the circuit board with the lights on it is what you need. I'm surprised you can't still get them. Two things - you may want to find out who made your stereo, hopefully Clarion, and not Visteon, and get one, or find another unit like yours to replace your whole head unit. They have to be at junkyards and all over stereo ... Read More
Bought it used a year ago. Stereo has AM-FM, Cassette w/ remote CD changer. A couple of months ago I noticed that the lights for the display on the radio are no longer working. The display is fine but in order to do anything with the rest of the system I have to turn on the overhead lights. The dealer says there is a "circuit board" w/the lights on it & ... Read More
The locks are sticking, Spray some WD-40 into the door locks to try to loosen them up. You may not be able to lube them good enough from the outside of the door. You may have to remove the interior panel from the door and lube the door locks directly. You will need to lube the locking mechanisms, the linkages and the electric lock solenoids, until they are loose and working ... Read More
I'm having a problem on my "97 merc mountaineer with the locks. It has keyless entry, keypad drivers door, and auto locks in drive. When I push lock or unlock, sometimes a lock sticks and won't go to the desired position. Normally it taks a couple of times pushing the button, but sometimes it won't go at all, then an hour or so later there is no problem. I am having ... Read More

alman08: Yes, you can pull a heavy load with that Explorer. The combination of the V8, Transmission and rear Axle is supposed to be very strong. I have a 1997 XLT and a 2000 XLT, both with You did not mention WHERE the leak was coming from, but since it was whinning and then leaking in each case, I would assume the two are directly related, likely the pinion seal was ... I have a 1997 Mountaineer, 5L V8, AWD that has recently tuned 103,000 miles. The vehicle has run great, and I've been delighted with it. My question is: is it time for me to change all of the fluids (differentials and transfer cases) and the spark plugs? I've gotten widely different opinions. The Ford dealer says to do so, and quoted a rather high dollar amount. The Lincoln/Mercury dealer said neither ... Read More
Can you please help me figure out my problem? I just purchased a used 1997 Mercury Mountaineer and the only problem I have with this nice vehicle is the radio. It sounds like there is maybe not enough power to bring the sound on through or all the speakers are blown. There is not that type of sound where speakers are blown though like heavy rattling, so just can't figure it ... Read More

Dealership replaced "module in transmission". Seemed better. 2nd visit was ... Read More
