Paid $51,500 in March 2022 when vehicle had 68,300 miles. $2,000 to fix sunroof and USB port at 76,000 miles, except sunroof still leaks. 80,000 mile service another $432. At 90k mile service was quoted almost $8000 to repair leaking oil trap, and repair a burned out headlamp and power module. Paid $1200 to do oil drip pan and four spark plugs before 90k mile service. Trading this demon in before anything else goes wrong. Volvo used to make solid, reliable, worry free vehicles that would run forever, but not anymore.

A Beautiful Headache

It was February 2023 and my old Ford Explorer was on its last leg. Since we were replacing my daily driver, my husband let me get whatever my heart desired (within reason, no Corvette for me...yet). We walked the car lots, read reviews, and I was going to give up for the day when I fell in love at first sight with this beauty in Denim Blue with the Amber interior. I had never considered buying a Volvo until that moment. Perhaps my subconscious was trying to protect me from the aggravation it somehow knew this vehicle would cause. But I threw caution to the wind, and without thoroughly researching this model, I bought it. It was such a step up from the old Ford, I was really enjoying it. Then the honeymoon ended. We live in Tucson, and by the end of April it starts getting a bit warm. After driving it for about 2 weeks with the a/c running, I noticed the driver's side a/c was blowing noticably warmer than the still ice cold passenger side. Odd. That's when I used the almighty Google and found the swedespeed forum. The owners of this model who have had the same problem as I was having had graciously shared their woes. Apparently one of the evaporators (the vehicle has two) can unceremoniously poop the bed. Armed with this knowledge, I was off to the service center! At this point, I wasn't too upset. Used cars can have some issues. The dealership couldn't get the car in until end of May, and we were already having days in the high 90s. I was directed to one of the "partner" repair shops. The service tech diagnosed a faulty Schrader valve (hooray!) and I was on the road again with cold wind blowing. Cut to two weeks later, and the same symptom occurred... Odd. Once again, the vehicle was diagnosed with a faulty Schrader valve! The tech assured me the problem was solved despite my insistence to check the evaporators, a known issue with this model vehicle. I returned 10 days later for the dye leak check and they found a leak in the compressor line. The dealership replaced the faulty parts and again I was on the road. Could the issue finally be fixed? Turns out no! By now, it's late June and were well into 100+ degree weather in Tucson. The dealership is able to book a July 5th appointment. Can you guess what they found? A leaking Schrader valve! Again I insisted they check the evaporators. I was told that the Schrader valve that was used was an aftermarket part, not Volvo and this is why it continued to leak... Okey dokey. But 5 days later, I'm sweating bullets in this vehicle. I call the dealership, and set an Aug. 1 appointment. At this point, I am offered a loaner car since I can't drive the Volvo. So on July 14, I parted ways with the beautiful XC90 again. Thankfully, they were able to look at it sooner than Aug. 1 and (drumroll) it's the evaporator! At this point they have sent the car to the local Volvo dealership for repair. It is uncertain when I will be out of the loaner and back into the Volvo. But I am told hopefully by the end of next week. What have we learned from this? 1) Carmax has excellent customer service; 2) Thank God for warranties (the repair will be around $4,000); 3) Swedes don't use a whole lot af a/c or they'd have designed a better system. Also, the sun visors are overall too small and don't slide to extend to cover gaps. The UV protection in the glass on the front windows is pretty much non-existent. I can feel my arms and side of my face slow-roasting in the Arizona sun. Window tinting will be required. Will I keep it once it's finally fixed? Will the new evaporator also fail? Stay tuned for part 2. *Update January 2024 So I've owned the XC90 for nearly a year. I still have trouble with the a/c. It takes forever to get cold. Sometimes if I turn the a/c off & on again it cools faster. This seems like a software glitch? We had the windows tinted which is a great relief, and I found some visor attachments to augment the small, non-extendable Volvo visors. Would I recommend buying this vehicle to a friend? I'm just not sure. It's definitely a love-hate relationship for me.

Expensive to buy, expensive to keep

The car is pleasant to drive, solid and well finished inside. It is, however, not reliable, which I always took as a given with a Volvo at the top of their line. It is not uncommon just out side the warranty window to have a several thousand dollar repair for failed sensors. this is really unacceptable for a car of this price, and one that touts quality and safety as their brand. In reality, toyota has probably better quality, at a substantially lower price and they are more affordable to maintain as well. Also the touchscreen is several generations behind other manufacturers, in particular the navigation feature is painful. After multiple volvos I think this is my last.

We have leased this car for the past 3 years. Great ride except for the entertainment system. I really don't like it.
