2021 Volkswagen Golf GTI
This generation GTI is absolutely fantastic.
This will be my second March 7 generation GTI. I had a 2017 SE manual model which I loved and had had for a couple years. But its life was unfortunately cut short by some lady running a red light and ending the GTIs life before its time. Tried to get me too but the car did a good job keeping me in one piece. When that happened I decided I … wasn’t done with my GTI experience and got another one.
My 2021 is an Autobahn Dsg model and can definitely say I love it just as much if not more than my 17. Lot of nice updates between the 7 and 7.5. Most notably, Wireless Apple CarPlay is a great quality of life upgrade. DCC was a welcome upgrade as the roads around my area are crap. Nice to have the comfort ride for daily driving and normal and sport modes for when the roads get smoother or more curvy. Also one of the first non-manual cars I’ve owned and might be my age talking but definitely like it. Fantastic dual clutch. Only bested by the PDK From Porsche. Smooth and more economical in regular drive. Sport mode has good programming and 90% of the time it shifts when I would shift. Manual mode is like a video game with lighting fast gear changes through the paddles with perfect rev matching on each shift.
Quality has been excellent. Build quality a second to none. Only issue I’ve had between both GTIs was on my 21 a noise coming from the rear that ended up just being a rear folding seat latch that needed some grease.
Maintenance costs I can’t really speak to because I opted for the available prepaid maintenance program/extended warranty. With the rise in labor rates and cost of parts since then I think it’s worth it for sure. Covers 8 years of maintenance and bumper to bumper warranty. Each year I just take it back to the mothership of my choosing, they scan the vin and all regular scheduled maintenance is taken care of at no cost.
All in all, I can’t give this vehicle high enough rating, checks every box for me. In my opinion, this car blends the perfect amounts of sport, luxury and economy into a quality compact hatch. Owned since new and plan on keeping it long term. Not much I would change. Might throw on a ECU/TCU tune after warranty is up but as of now plan on enjoying it stock for what it is. Can’t recommend the GTI enough.
