Used 2019 Toyota Tacoma Consumer Reviews

I leased a 2017 Tacoma Limited, despite my better judgment, thinking "surely in 3 years they will have Apple CarPlay" and thought I might warm up to Toyota's stupid Entune system. NOPE. Quite the opposite. I like my Taco, but I'm turning this one in when the lease is up, and I won't buy or lease another Taco without a real head unit. The Apple and Android systems are too elegant, and that com center is too important to me. I"ll find something that doesn't require so much work to use. Hard pass.
Capable offroader, not too nice on the road
Update 1/5/2022: I traded the truck last year for a Ram 1500. I ultimately chose not to trust that transmission shudder past the OEM warranty, especially since the dealer blew me off. I won’t buy another one. The Ram, however, I feel is a much better vehicle. Drivetrain is very stout especially behind a Hemi. And? No transmission shudder!! ;-) The good: As stated, very capable offroad, Ground clearance and drivetrain components are more than adequate to get you into and back out of the woods. Part-time transfer case is stout. 4H and 4L work without issue. Suspension is tight and quiet. Engine has plenty of power. Seats are comfortable as I am 5'9. Some of the complaints I see are from taller people. I would certainly recommend that anyone looking to buy one of these try it out first! Drive it to see if you are comfortable! The bad: The transmission. Let me be clear: THE TRANSMISSION. TOYOTA, I know you read these so pay attention!! I have been to the dealer and received the standard "They all do that" answer, which I confirmed by driving several of them. However, just because "they all do it", does NOT mean that we, as customers, find it acceptable. Here is what happens: Normal "D" position, from 45-63mph, approx. 1200 engine RPM, throttle tip-in on a slight grade, the transmission shudders (almost feels like a stumble). It wants to shift but cannot. Push the accel further it upshifts and shudder stops. I am a former powertrain warranty engineer for one of the big three so I know what I am talking about. It irritates me. I can reproduce it 100% of the time. I bought the truck new; it now has 30k miles on it and it has always done this. Look me up on tacoworld name WireEd if you want further detail. Toyota Engineering: Please fix this issue. I will be happy to help you troubleshoot it. Thank you.

First and last Taco
Don’t buy. The transmission doesn’t know what it wants at any speed. Floorboard vibrations up to 60 mph. The film in the front widows almost makes you sick. Gonna trade in for and older truck.

Not what it used to be
I bought my TRD-Off Road new from the dealer and was very excited as I was able to get one with a manual transmission. In the last 14 months I put about 5800 miles on it, including a lot of Minnesota winter driving. Overall, it's an ok truck, but IMHO, way too expensive. The competition offers more for less money. My wife bought a new Tacoma back in 2007 in we both loved it. 12 years later, you can't compare the 2. When we sold my wife's truck, it had about 80000 miles on it and has been overseas and in about 14 different states. It was a great truck with no issues whatsoever. Fast forward to the disappointment in 2019. As mentioned before, truck has not even 6000 miles on it and rattles all over the cab. I am not sure why Toyota chose to put an atkins-cycle engine in a truck, but it was a bad idea. They should've put the 4Runner's 4.0 in it. Anyways, If you've ever driven a Honda V-Tech before, that's how this truck's engine feels like, nothing between 0-3000rpm, after that v-tech kicks in and it gets moving, not fast, but steady (mind you can watch the gas gauge dive while you do that). I average about 14-16mpg around town and maybe 20mpg on a good day, downhill. I don't race my truck and I hardly ever go more than 10mph over the speed limit. Gas mileage on this thing s***s. As a lot of people before me mentioned, 2019 was the year that didn't get the height adjustable driver seat. Also a design flaw, I am about 6', and it feels cramped, head to toe and side to side. Small cabin, not much head or leg room and uncomfortable seats. I know, you may ask why did you buy it? Because I loved my wife's Tacoma and I thought Toyota wouldn't be that stupid and change a best seller like that, but they were. There is also the thing about the bed covers, unless you buy it in a package, you can't get an OEM Toyota tonneau-cover for it. You need to buy one somewhere else, not a big deal, but for me, I like to keep new cars as close to original as possible. My truck has the OEM chrome tube-steps which are nice, but installed way too close to the cabin, you can hardly fit a boot on it as you will hit the bottom of the cabin when you step on it. Also not that big of a deal, but worth mentioning. Good things about the truck: Not that many, navigation and infotainment system are easy to use, the wireless charger in the middle console works pretty well and it's really easy to get used to the size of the truck. It drives well for a truck and is surprisingly quiet, even with the off road tires. In the end, I think the Tacoma is not what it used to be anymore and even with some of the options the 2020 got (LED headlights, height adjustable seats) I won't be getting another one. It may be different when you put some nice options on it, but the engine and transmission alone is enough reason for me to stay away from it.

Nice looking truck but terrible quality
Test drove 3 different Tacomas as I was looking to trade my 2013 Titan pro 4X. I am extremely happy I kept my Titan. It has been the best truck I've ever owned. This Tacoma drives terrible, rides ok, sluggish and constantly shifted on all 3 trucks I tested. Dealer wanted 50 OTD for a 2018 Off road. Hilarious. My Titan is 10 times nicer in every way except may mpg but I'm not sure what the Tacoma gets for mpgs but I'm hearing its not good. I won't be buying a Tacoma.
